Torte de Lini: AMA - I make in-game Hero Builds and worked in esports for the past 7 years

January 2016 - AMA

Proof: Twitter: "AMA Time on @dota2reddit! Finally getting around to do this as I cool down from Kyiv and try to relax."

Similar to last year, I won the /r/Dota2 Best of 2016 award for "Most Valuable Subredditor" next to SirBelvedere and promptly did an AMA after some interest - decided to do it again this year. Since then, this year has exploded with public acknowledgements from so many admirable names within gaming and live-streaming community and as of last month, I've started being very active on Twitch chat where I received a lot of support, appreciation and questions about myself and the project. I figured I'd do another AMA before things get too hectic for me again soon.

My name is Michael 'Torte de Lini' Cohen, I have been doing a project called the Standard Hero Builds Project, a catalog of hero builds for new players to rely on directly in the game. Recently this year, the hero builds reached 200 million and as of today, the guides have over 222,137,649 total subscriptions. I maintain about 155 hero builds with 12 dual item-builds within equally 167 builds in total. You can view the entire Hero Builds Statistical Data here. At the moment, the Sven guide is nearing 3 million unique subscribers, a first for the hero builds database

I would like to promote my subreddit /r/HeroBuilds if you have any criticisms about any hero build or consider financially supporting the project via Patreon.com/torte.

All feedback is usually answered and financial support goes directly towards the project, I do NOT keep or use any funding for personal interests.

The Dota 2 Standard Hero Builds are a project I do in my spare time and without compensation. To survive, I have been working in esports for the past 7 years:

  • I started in StarCraft II managing pro-gaming teams ranging from the original VT Gaming, Team Dynamic, Quantic Gaming, Infinity Seven and ROOT Gaming
  • I went on to work in a lot of community events, LAN ETS, BarCraft Montreal, Special Tactics with White-Ra and the NASL Season 3: Finals [Toronto] and more
  • In my spare time during college doing the above two jobs, I also wrote for many news organizations such as ESFI World, Definitve Esports and ESEA
  • After graduating, I moved around the world to be involved in many start-up companies (some not so reputable):
    • I was first involved in a competing ESEA matchmaking client called PlayIGL as a Communications Director
    • I moved to Berlin, Germany to do business development for a studio making esports web-shows: ESGN
    • Later, I moved to Copenhagen, Denmark to create a digital magazine called 1337 Magazine at Aller Media
    • Last year, I arrived in Los Angeles to do business development for a live-streaming service named Azubu TV
    • and now I travel regularly to Moscow and reside in Berlin preparing to launch a media esports brand.

I will try to answer as many questions as possible, I didn't get any sleep last night so I need to stay awake until it's officially bedtime. I answer questions very extensively, so be prepared for very long and elaborate answers.

Whose Lane Is It Anyway: Kiev Major Edition

Posted: 01 May 2017 05:54 AM PDT

Welcome to Whose Lane Is It Anyway /r/dota2 Post-Kiev Major Edition, where the points aren't made up and the scores do matter (to some).

I am your host /u/Drakus_. The Kiev Major tournament has been very exciting for us and for the teams involved, and it's time to fire up your meme engines!

As we wait for TI7, let's kick things off with a bang! (Or splash since TI7 is Aquatically Themed)

The rules:

•Keep skits in the form of a statement, not a question.

•Any skits longer than two lines should be in quotations.

•If you add any additional commentary, put the skit in quotations.

If you don't understand the concept, a skit looks like this:

Things that are more broken than S4 in the 5th game of a Bo5 Grand Finals Series.

Be creative guys, let the memes and good times flow (or don't I'm not your mother)

New Dota 2 Caster

Posted: 01 May 2017 03:39 AM PDT

So..... After probably around 4 years of Casting local South African tournaments (Hype caster) , ranging from $100 prize money all the way up to $100 000 eSports events. From casting Mortal Kombat X, Heroes of the Storm, Overwatch and a lot of Dota 2 Tournaments.

I have decided I should probably start saving the broadcasts and I should have a youtube channel. And start working my way to becoming more serious and start casting some international tournaments if possible.

These are a few casts that I have done recently. The Telkom Dota 2 Masters playlist is a few solo casts I did recently. And the Romanian Dota 2 league I did with my cocaster. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChmGAAkUH6VLz1TKZS933Ww

Let me know what you guys think. Where I should improve, what I should focus on and what I should cut out of my casts.

I would appreciate the feedback :)

The Kiev Major - A thank you to the community

Posted: 30 Apr 2017 01:36 PM PDT

Hello everyone,

The Kiev Major has concluded, the 5th in Dota 2 history... and another trophy is in the bag for OG. Anybody start to see a pattern here?

Going into the event, we knew that this was going to be the most challenging one that we've done on this scale, mainly due to the fact that, for the first time, our production team was going to be split between Kiev and Bucharest.

And while some of the things that we were expecting to go wrong actually didn't, the technical side ended up rougher around the edges than we would have liked.

That said, one of the things that did go according to plan were the Mischiefs at the Major segments. The concept behind them was to have enough content so we wouldn't have any breaks whatsoever during the main event.

Which is why the Kiev Major has become the first in history with no breaks during the main event. That's over 60 hours of broadcast over just four days.

Speaking of which... what the hell was up with those series? Best of 3s for all their money's worth right from the group stage, 60+ minutes games... seriously?!?

After day two, the callouts in the production room devolved into "Yo, let's get ready with the cameras, they're pushing high ground! / What's the in-game timer? / 28:15 / GTFO of this channel, call me again when we're at around the 55 minute mark".

And sure enough, 30 minutes later we were getting ready for the end of the game. Nostradamus would have been proud.

Not that we complain. If long broadcast days are the price we have to pay for series like Secret or EG vs SG e-sports and this Grand Final, so be it. We can take the heat.

So thank you for being patient with us, for the support and the dedication to follow the event all the way through the late hours of the night, both in the arena and online.

You're the reason we do what we do.

The true value Item of the final game of the Kiev Major - Haven's Halberd

Posted: 01 May 2017 04:00 AM PDT

I've seen many people and the casters think that the last game of the Kiev Major was lost maybe because Alchemist sold his Solar Crest, maybe because of all the evasion on the Butterfly on Troll, but there was another important item which I saw, and it was this:

In 2 vital team fights Enchantress was disarmed and her entire fighting potential disabled. She was sitting there and doing nothing, due to the s4 Halberd. For some reason there was no type of disable on VP, no Lotus Orb or any ability. As a result, the vital Enchantress, which even got an Aghs at that point (big investment from Alchemist) was completely ineffective.

Edit: Ok, I made a mistake. It is not dispellable, but it can be dispelled by BkB which Enchantress sadly never had. Doesn't change the argument though.

Just watch that team fight at Rosh were VP almost won and then OG turned it back to win the game. In that fight Enchantress was hitting, then got disarmed, then just STOOD there for 5 secs, had to go up, where she got picked off again.

Haven's Halberd can be a very good item at the right moments. Just made this post to show cast an item which is often labelled as too WEAK or inefficient by many players. WP s4

Dear Mr. Lizard

Posted: 01 May 2017 07:47 AM PDT

A lone offlane player observes the enemies picks

And then decides to choose his best hero Nyx

As he awaits the dawn of a new age with his furious clicks

He awaits the gameplay patch known only as Dota 2 7.06

'Tis been but a day since the eventful Kiev Major

Everyone continues to buy Midas as if second nature

Patch 7.05 continues to grow old and get stale

And on the top page of /r/Dota2 the resident 9K Redditors wail

For now they grow tired of countering Abbadon only to fail

The new patch, 7.06, for them and many others is like the Holy Grail

A new patch so highly sought after and anticipated

Going without one, our thirst for fresh new strategies won't be sated

So please Ice Frog, please Mr. Lizard

Deliver us a patch much better than any game made by Blizzard.

If it gets them views, who am I to complain, but it seems a bit like pandering to the crowd... then again they also have Slacks balancing everything out.
