Civ VI idea: Doctrines

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 05:26 PM PDT

I came up with this idea today, instead of the AI having a random hidden agenda, let's replace it with a doctrine that is unlocked with civics. Players could also pick a doctrine. Each doctrine would have a diplomatic bonus/negative. It could also give small bonuses. One I can think of that wouls be useful:

Protectionism: You make it known to the world that any Civ from another continent is not welcome on yours. If they settle on your continent, you see it as an act of aggression. Gives you less warmonger penalty for conquering cities on your continent owned by civs not from your continent.

I feel like it would make the AI think twice before settling on your continent if you are friendly.

The only problem I have is these being too alike to policy cards.

I wish Civ had a more flexible and realistic warfare system.

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 06:00 PM PDT

I like waging war for the most part, but I have two gripes with the current system, but both really stem from one factor: the game forces you to commit too much when you wage war.

Right now, when I go to war, I do it to destroy a rival army or to capture land. It's a shame because there are plenty of other reasons to go to war that I can't really go to war for in Civ.

For example, it would be nice if I could just slaughter a group of settlers or a band of soldiers without committing to a total war that could last years. In real life you don't go from peace to total war for every bit of spilt blood. This is my first gripe - you can't fight without declaring total war.

I would love to have a system where instead of having War/Peace you'd have a hostility scale with the two extremes at either end. Violence or hostile actions brings it towards the WAR end, while lack of hostility over time, trade, and negotiation bring it to the PEACE end.

This way, an army becomes more useful without forcing you to commit to proper war. You can have a small army to settle border disputes with barbarians and retaliate against encroaching civiliations. For example, when someone tries to forward settle you, you kill the settlers - that will piss the other civ off but it doesn't have to end in a bloodbath. Just pay them off or compromise in some other way. You would also be able to do other things like plunder another civ's convoy if you need gold. Again, that doesn't have to result in a total war and all the other civs denouncing you as a horrible warmonger.

Like I said, I like waging war. But, as the aggressor, there is only one thing I can do, and that's capture land in the form of cities. This is bad, because, like I said, it forces you to take that unhappiness hit and hold on to that city, or at most flip it back to the owner but the city is a wreck.

Instead, war should be centered around resources, not cities. You would be able to take over individual tiles in enemy territory to gain those resources or raid them to gain a gold boost or some other benefit depending on the resource. In addition to that, you should be able to do the same thing with cities. This will work even better with the new system in Civ 6 where you have districts. You should be able to come in, sack the city and leave with the booty.

With these two changes, warfare will become a constant factor in the game rather than something you either do or don't. It will make the army more useful for players who don't want to conquer territory for it's own sake and to players who mostly play defense.

Something from Civ Rev that I wish had carried over to the main series: Different cultures of barbarians.

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 04:55 AM PDT

In Civ Rev the barbarians are controlled by three different leaders. There's Brennus and Grey Wolf, who lead European style barbarians, and Norte Chico, who leads African style barbarians. Why couldn't something like this exist in the main series? It would give the barbarians some personality, rather than just being obstacles.

Do you prefer Civ V's peace and war themes, or Civ VI's era-specific themes?

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 11:39 AM PDT

It's honestly hard for me to have a preference. On one hand, I love how atmospheric Civ V's war themes made going to war. Take Brazil's war theme, or PARTY ARMY as I like to call it. Or the Shoshone war theme, which sounds like something from a movie.

But on the other hand, the era-specific themes in Civ VI are really good at getting me into the spirit of the time. When it finally builds up to the Atomic Era rendition, it makes me look back and think how far I've come. Take America's theme, which goes from sounding like this, to sounding like this. Or my personal favorite, China's Atomic Era theme. Of course, this comes at the cost of these often happy and peaceful sounding themes playing during wartime, which has broken the mood for me a bit sometimes.

So, what do you think?

I think Civ:BE would have been so much better if it had the Civ VI district system.

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 05:36 PM PDT

It's just my opinion, but I can't help but imagine Worms tearing through whole districts. Or maybe even the smaller creatures infesting districts, forcing you to clear them by force (or by quest) to benifit from that district again.

Waterborn cities would instead of moving around just be allowed to build continuously in any direction it wanted.

Don't get me wrong, CivBE had alot of problems, but I would have found it so much more interesting with alot of the systems VI has.

Who are the best multiplayer Youtubers out there? I watch alot of the Yogcast but I'm running out of their content to watch. I really like how they cut their videos into nice 20 minute segments instead of an 8hr long video like some youtubers.

Coming back to Civ 3

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 10:42 AM PDT

Hey guys, I recently downloaded Civilization 3 again getting a new computer and paying civ v for years. I remember going into Civ 3's files and changing the corruption levels so the outer cities can actually develop with a large empire, but I can't figure out how to get into the game files and editing it. Do any of you know how to get into those files to change the corruption level of the game?

Its been 6 months, its time to cut Civbattleroyale from the sidebar

Posted: 05 Apr 2017 12:16 PM PDT

After the collapse of the MKI, then the MKII Battle Royales... and now the colossal catastrophe and ensuing drama of MKIII... its time to finally cut the sidebar link for Civbattleroyale. The current content and quality of the few active users doesn't justify its prominent placement. For six months its just been low-effort shit-posting. R/CivAIgames is more inclusive of the whole original spirit behind the Battle Royale and is actually putting out real content for those interested in that sort of anything. At the very least, there is no reason for r/civbattleroyale to remain linked until Tpang and the team actually have game content, not just nebulous updates and delay apologies.

Looking for a Civ 6 mod that stops Wonders from expiring.

I'm wondering if there's a mod that stops the game from removing Mods after the designated era has passed. Does such a mod exist?
