First Look at 10" Lord Saladin figure from McFarlane

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 06:45 AM PST

No one told the newb he shouldn't waste his self-res, then he becomes legend

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 01:07 AM PST

This vid takes a bit of setup: I get recruited into a Vault raid by a friend at the Templar. I get in to find that three of the guys are not in the party chat, and two of them have never done the Vault of Glass before.

OK, fine.

We get through the Templar fight pretty easy. The Gorgons? Not so much. They charge forward, trying to take out the Gorgons. Aww, ain't they cute. Still, there's a massive amount of wipes before they figure out to follow me and my raidbro. We make it through the maze.

Jumping puzzle: The fun starts again. Keep in mind that I wasn't really taking their new-ness seriously. I thought they had been jacking around in the maze, and because those of us chatting weren't at our best, we were responsible for the wipes. It's here at the H.R. Jump'n'stuff that I finally start to believe they are really newbs. I help 'em through, show 'em how to float, and how to dodge that stupid crack in the ledge.

We make it to the Gatekeeper. I start messaging them; surely one of 'em has a mic. One of 'em does! And his other newb friend is in the same room! We can do this.

About this time a couple of my regular raidbros fill in two open spots. We carry them through the Conflux, then get ready for Atheon. There is much wiping. The mechanics are new to these guys, after all. We have some successes, but a lot more failures as they learn to hold down the outside, how to walk forward while taking out oracles, how to not grab the relic and let us take care of it.

One particular run goes really well. We take a lot of damage out of Atheon in the first cycle, and get ready for the next. But then, because I'm a dumbass, I die. That leaves Boooman, one of the newbs, outside by himself.

And that's when the magic happens.

Everything goes OK at first. Boooman holds down outside, as I tell him where to stand. Everyone gets to the middle and starts wailing Glassy Spikyhead in the tenders. But then an explosion happens, and the entire team dies.

Boooman, an alleged newb, in an ultimate display of "Screw that noise," pops his self-res.

Then runs to the back of the room. Way out of grenade range.

But then he runs forward, charging, shooting like a son-of-a-gunner at Atheon.

AND FRICKIN' MELTS HIM.

Sorry about my laughter and yelling in the video. But man, was that awesome to watch. I've never seen a newb singlehandedly save a raid like that. He ended up getting one of my raidbros his first Vex Mythoclast.

Maybe I'm getting fooled. Dude had a 390 light level and a 3400 Grimoire. All I know is that he acted like a newb for a loooooooooong time, so I take him at his word.

Talk about becoming legend. I picture a kid somewhere, stoked beyond belief about his epic MLG save. When he's old enough, I'll buy him a drink.

Upcoming Health Regen Corrections - Cozmo

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:23 PM PST

After playing Doubles with randos for a bit, I've come up with some useful tips.

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 08:42 AM PST

  1. Stay with your teammate.

  2. Oftentimes, you'll want to be a hero, or a lone wolf, or get that ammo crate nearby while your teammate is being shot. Don't do this. Stay with your teammate.

  3. Other times, there may not be any combat going on. You may get the urge the explore the map, and set off on your own into new voyages, mapping the cosmos and creating your own legacy. Don't do this. Stay with your teammate.

  4. Ah, you see your teammate about to tango with some foes, and he has the advantage. Now's the time to break off, cause he's got this, right? Wrong. Stay with your teammate

  5. STAY WITH YOUR FUCKING TEAMMATE.

TLW: For the love of Christ, stay with your teammate...

If Universal Remote was nerfed, why wasn't NLB?

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 07:59 AM PST

I understand why Universal Remote was nerfed as Bungie didn't want everyone to use it as their shotgun they wanted more primary play, but why didn't the same apply for NLB? It was already being used far more than UR and with no nerfs is now really part of the meta and is almost impossible to counter as they will run sidearm as their special.

Currently 52% of all Trials kills are with sidearms.

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 05:57 AM PST

I don't even play PvP but I thought this number was really high. I have to dig into the numbers to see if this is accurate but if so, wow! I guess the team got what they wanted.

A World of Teeth: The Ahamkara [Spoilers and Conjecture]

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 03:49 AM PST

The Ahamkara, the dragons that granted wishes, have been slain by the guardians. The cost for their power was too high, and so, the vanguard ordered their extinction. But truly, how extinct are they?

Just a note: I will not be including The Dragon of Venus, as I believe that is just a piece of ambient fauna, rather than a dragon.

First off, we must note how we can identify the presence of an Ahamkara. There are several pieces of gear that bear their racial bones: the Young Ahamkara Spine, the Sealed Ahamkara Grasps, the Claws of the Ahamkara and the Skull of the Dire Ahamkara. Each of them has some flavor text, which are as follows: Spine: "Give me your arm, oh bearer mine. Let me help you fill the world with teeth" Grasps: "Plating the Ahamkara bones in silver helps to quiet the auditory hallucinations...oh bearer mine." Claws: "Look at all this life, oh bearer mine. There is so much left to burn..." Skull: "Reality is the finest flesh, oh bearer mine. And are you not...hungry?"

Also of note are the Bones of Eao, which where known as "Unbreakable Bones" in development, and bore the flavor text "Surely the Warlocks cling to these fossils for a reason. What could it be, oh bearer mine?" The Bones now bear the text "Defy extinction," which to me, assuming they are forged of Ahamkara bones, implies that the wish-dragons have in fact defied their deaths.

Each of these items shares a fairly common thread: "oh bearer mine."

So. Now that we've identified the linguistic quirk indicative of Ahamkara, let's look at the only evidence of their extinction- the grimoire cards "Ghost Fragment: Legends 3" and "Ghost Fragment: Warlock"

Legends 3 is as follows: "After great deliberation it was determined that the Ahamkara be made extinct. It was not an easy decision. Power had been obtained from the bargains, and the City needed power. Knowledge had been gleaned, and the Ahamkara knew answers to questions no one had known to ask. But the price was too high. And no edict or forbearance seemed to stop Guardians from seeking them out, driven by hope, or vengeance, or despair. The call had to be silenced. So the Great Hunt did its work. And thus the Ahamkara were made extinct, their call silenced, their solipsistic flatteries erased, their great design - if it ever existed - broken. Of this you can be assured, oh reader mine."

And Warlock is as follows: "Why did I set her on the trail?

You try and try and try to explain, but no one ever understands. No one who's not a Warlock. Who hasn't spent a dozen years scouring the ruins for one string of symbols, one clean code, one black talon. Titans just make a hmphing noise, if they've stayed awake. Hunters clean their nails with their knives and look at you like you've grown a third eye.

But when you've spent your life searching through arcana for ancient power, you have the urge to reach out and educate others. Especially if you've had one too many.

Nah, she's not my type at all. We've played dice, cards, war games, you know, the usual stuff. I'd never tried to show off before. I don't know what came over me.

I had a broken vertebrae in my pocket that I'd borrowed from - yes, borrowed, I was going to put it back - what do you think you are, my conscience? It was a fossil, that means mineral replacement, a rock, basically. They can survive a few hours in my pocket. Do shut up.

The Cryptarchs weren't going to miss it. Everyone knows the Ahamkaras were hunted to extinction. There's nothing to be afraid of anymore.

Think of how mysterious this system is, I said. How much life sprang up when the Traveler came. Like the Ahamkara. Do you know the legends? The dragon that made promises? And I pulled out the fossil with a flourish -

She pulled out her knife and started to pick the dirt from her nails. That set me off.

You could never have brought down one of these, I said. Ever. Not the greatest Hunter, not the brawniest Titan.

Her eyes narrowed. She said, Oh? Is that so? And I saw right then that she wasn't going to pass on the challenge.

I've murdered a Guardian, I thought. She's going to die. It'll be my fault.

And I looked at the piece of spine in my hand and wondered - why did I say that? What moved me to such pride?"

Now, these cards indicate that the Ahamkara were driven extinct by the vanguard, and were driven extinct long enough ago to fossilize. However, Legends 3 has one line of damning evidence against their extinction, "of this you can be assured, oh reader mine," which seems to indicate that the card itself was written by an Ahamkara. This would certainly make sense, as if guardians thought them extinct, they would cease their endless hunt, at least until a hunter was told she couldn't kill one.

Going into the reasons I don't truly believe them to be extinct also ties into the Warlock card, and a hunter artefact, the Ahamkara Scale. Not only is it not fossilized, it comes with the flavor text "And that Warlock thought I couldn't do it. Hah!" The card, along with the flavor text, indicates that, at least up until the release to The Taken King, at least one Ahamkara lived.

Now, the Hive connection (everything seems to connect to them, doesn't it?). Aurash's sister Sathona took their father's familiar, "a dead white worm." This worm later identified himself as Yul, the Honest Worm, who led them to other worms, named Eir, Xol, Akka, and Ur. While a dead white thing is certainly no dragon, we do know that fragments of the Ahamkara contain some measure of power, and that when Akka was slain, he was large enough to carve ten tablets from his corpse. Further, in many mythologies, worm (or wyrm or wurm) are used interchangeably with dragon, which leads me to believe that The Honest Worm is a fragment of am Ahamkara, or a very young specimen of one. The most damning piece of evidence is that, when Yul bade the Osmium King's last surviving daughters from his final brood to dive into the Fundament, he did so with a simple phrase- "dive, oh sisters mine."

In the Books of Sorrow, if we assume the worms are in fact Ahamkara, we read of five of them. We know Akka was slain by Oryx. However, this leaves four worms, somewhere out in the darkness.

The final question I ask is how dead is a "dead" Ahamkara. We know for certain that the pieces of armor seem to contain some form of sentience, and influence over their bearer. We also know, from the Hive that death is a very relative term. Finally, in The Books of Sorrow, it was stated that Akka was "dead, but far from gone."

So. What can we draw from this? From this information, I draw that the Ahamkara are not gone, and are far from dead. I also, in my heart, believe that the Ahamkara are either The Darkness itself, or else its greatest instruments.

And that is where I leave you. What conclusion you draw from this is yours, oh reader mine.

Destiny Goals (and a message)

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 10:07 AM PST

The current version of Destiny is certainly in its twilight, but perhaps there are activities you've never tried...things you never got around to doing. I'm wondering if any of you guys and gals still have goals that you'd like to achieve in Destiny?

For me there are a few:

1)I'd like to solo Crota and in the process pick up flawless raider. This one is within reach and I think I can knock it out in the next week or two.

2)I'm going to attempt to solo Aksis (yep, I said it). I probably don't have the patience or the skill to do this. For me the attempt is all that matters.

3)Obtain a Burning Eye. I'm only a fair PvP player and none of my buddies are Trials players. Sadly, I think this one will remain just out of my reach.

4)This is the one that is difficult to talk about. I'm an intensely private person, so this is out of character for me (there is a bigger point I'll get to in a moment). I'm chronically ill. In fact, last September I was told that I am most likely terminal. That out of the way, my most significant goal would be to hang around long enough to experience Destiny 2. I hope to see what mysteries and adventures await us all.

Now, on to that bigger point. Destiny has been a world in which I can hide from the harsh realities of my life...a harbor in the storm. One in which I can spend time with a few close friends. It is escapism, plain and simple. But I am not the only one that needs an escape. We are all carrying a heavy burden, and we all love this universe...its sights and sounds. So, act accordingly, be kind to those you meet in The Tower, or The Reef, Ishtar Sink, Old Russia, deep inside the Vault of Glass, The Archon's Forge, Archer's Line...and all of those worlds that for now, are just over the horizon.

Thanks to the new meta, this round in Trials was possible

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 09:21 AM PST

Probably the most frantic round I've ever had. New weapons. Not used to reduced magazine sizes. Not used to Trespasser. Not used to Titan striker. Everything new.

Behold the insanity. Excuse my French.

The nerfing of Truth - or why infrequency balance changes are a problem

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 12:42 PM PST

As we all know, Bungie hasn't been updating the sandbox at regular enough intervals and Truth was nerfed in the ground.

Truth rose to the top of the meta because there were no exotics in PvP for it to compete with.

The exotic hand cannons couldn't really hit max range with the ease of use as a Luna or Palindrome - so they weren't used. The exotic pulse rifles couldn't keep with a god rolled Dragon or Grasp. ARs weren't competitive. Exotic shotguns aren't as good as a god rolled M64. The exotic snipers weren't as good as a god rolled high impact sniper.

The only exotics that really could hold their own was MIDA and the Trespasser. [Before the last balance patch - and you would sees these weapons in the game.]

With a legendary primary and legendary secondary - there was no reason NOT to pick Truth as the heavy. Truth wasn't like Gjallarhorn - when it was the answer to the problem. Truth was like one of the last picked kids on a team - they had to pick someone why not him.

That drove Truth to be over used, but not over powered. People are irked about the nerf because it was solving a problem that didn't exist.

Were there more balance updates, the other exotics may have risen to the top and displaced Truth as a pick. In the current meta, Invective, Ice Breaker and the Trespasser are certainly making a play for the exotic slot in a load.

This has been done in the past, Bungie nerfs something right after putting the solution in place to control it.

More frequent balance patches would help prevent nerfing things unjustly.

Since so many people don't seem to know, "hotfixes" do not require certification by Msoft or Sony. They are Bungie server side changes that circumvent the standard patching process

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 08:31 PM PST

Server side patches do not require certification. The hotfix released this week was not approved by anyone. Bungie adjusted the code that runs server side. Which is why when you started the game, the download happens IN GAME. If it were a patch on the console side, the game would not have started right away and you would be taken to separate download screen on initial attempt to play.

So if Bungie were to do updates to weapon tuning every few weeks, it would not cost any extra time or money than it does to have it update every 6 months. The argument can be made it costs more in labor, but I think we all agree it absolutely would be worth it.

Here's the real lesson from all this PvP salt, Bungie...

Posted: 17 Feb 2017 01:57 PM PST

It's simply this:

Large PvP patches twice a year are a recipe for disaster.

Frequent, smaller, carefully targeted patches would be better for everyone... including your reputation.

It would also be more "scientific". I don't see how you can trust your data-driven changes when so many variables are being changed each patch. Good science suggests that you change one (or as few as possible) thing and then observe it's effect on the system as a whole.

Do this on a monthly or bi-monthly basis and everyone will be much more satisfied with the results - even if they result in a step backwards no one will sweat it as much since it will only be a couple of weeks to undo it or try something else instead.

Edits:

This took off... sweet! And, tx!

Allow me to address a few comments here...

  1. My suggestion is for D2. I know it's too late for D1.

  2. Nearly everything that can/should be tweaked in a PvP environment can be setup as a server-side parameter that loads at start of the match, including weapon data. I suspect most of it is done that way as it is now, but who knows. They just need to make sure D2 is implemented with this in mind. This would also facilitate keeping PvP tweaks separate from PvE.

  3. I missed the (implied) /s on MisterWoodhouse's comment, too. :)

  4. I think frequent tweaks would make grinding for a weapon all the more important... you never know what might be useful, and when. Of course, we'd have to have a whole new conversation about vault space, tho. :)

  5. I actually like a lot of the recent update. But, if it had been rolled out in smaller bites Bungie would have avoided some of the fubar, as well as kept their good name intact. I just hope they figure this out for themselves...

And, finally, here's how I'd do it if I were in charge:

A. Initial target would be monthly patches. Frequency could increase once experience and momentum is gained.

B. Deej and Cozmo would publicly curate 3 lists based on user input: A list of known bugs/issues. A list of suggested buffs, in order of priority, and a list of suggested nerfs, in order of priority. The lists should include details as to how much or what manner to buff/nerf. (edit: I'm thinking something like a "top 5" or "top 10" list to buff/nerf, with all the various community ideas on how).

C. The goal would be to do one nerf and one buff each monthly cycle, and, as many bug fixes as possible each cycle. The final say on which items from the lists to implement, if any, belong to the PvP team, of course. But, eventually getting to the items on the public lists would be to Bungie's benefit.

D. Rinse, repeat. Accelerate if possible.

Thanks, all, for your discussion! You're awesome!

McFarlane Destiny Toys from the New York Toy Fair

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 08:43 AM PST

So I've been very interested in the new line of action figures McFarlane is making and I've been looking all over Twitter for information so I decided since I found most of the things I was looking for that I would just make a post with all of the info, if I missed something feel free to put it in the comments and I'll add it to the post and credit you when I have time. So let's get to it These are the things that are coming.

Vault of Glass Titan figure, 7" tall, comes with Gjallarhorn, Invective and an orange ghost. Costs $19.99 and is out in July 2017

King's Fall Warlock, 7" tall, comes with Black Hammer, Touch of Malice and a green ghost. Costs $19.99 and is out in July 2017

Iron Banner Hunter, 7" tall, comes with Thorn, Hung Jury and a white ghost. Costs $19.99 and is out in July 2017

Lord Saladin, 10" tall, comes with Iron Axe, Jolders hammer and no ghost. Costs $34.99 and is out in "Fall 2017", his helmet will be removable

Gjallarwing Sparrow (I didn't find much info on this so if somebody has it please feel free to put it in the comments), looks like it's going to be "Holiday 2017". Needs to be assembled

Gjallarhorn, seems like it's life size, I calculated that it's around 17" high and I couldn't be bothered to calculate the length of it. On to the pricing, wait for it..... $149.99!! And it's out in fall 2017

So that's all I got, my sources are McFarlane.com, McFarlanes Instagram story where they take us around the booth for close ups of different items and the McFarlane blog post they have over on their website. Hope this helped

Special ammo economies aside, primaries are pretty evenly spread so far.

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 10:47 AM PST

Hand Cannons - 38% Pulse rifles - 26% Scout Rifles - 22% Auto Rifles - 13%

Hand cannons are probably going to win out because of versatility. This map also can be played a variety of ways so any weapon class can be used. I think we all know sidearms are dominating right now but it is really nice to see a variety of primaries being used.

edit - yes these are trials stats, to be fair i think a lot of us form a lot of opinions on trials games.

For D2, I want an exotic rocket launcher called Megadeth

Posted: 18 Feb 2017 03:23 AM PST

The flavor text would be "Killing is my business....and business is good"

Obviously it would be solar so we can Set the world Afire.

Shouldn't be too hard to get Dave Mustaine's permission. We can tell him that one of the enemies is named Lars and that we kill Lars over and over.
