FYI: Religious units can block tiles for Prophets, and all Great People

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 04:02 AM PST

I just won a turn 87 game as Poland on Emperor difficulty because I basically had only 1,5 religions to compete with (I got the Reliquaries Belief since I got one Lucky relic semi early and went for cheaper Apostles and Missionaries wit Mosque's +1 spread). Why only 1,5 religions? Well, Russia choked HARD on barbs and did not expand past Sankt Petersburg so they have sent 2 missionaries total, and I intercepted both as I was on my way to Russia being furthest from me and second to last civ to convert. Japan's 3 religious cities fell prey to Proselytizer + Pilgrim and luckily Hojo didn't declare war on me despite denouncement. I knew Egypt and USA were working towards Prophets so I ignored Ra-Kedet and Yerevan (the only USA city with a Holy Site) because founding a religion in a city instantly and fully converts this city to newfound religion. But as my Apostle was passing Ra-Kedet on his way to Egypt's Stockholm, I experienced an enlightenment-religious units' and Great People's icons bear the same shape, which foolproof means that they can't be on the same tile. So I parked my Apostle right on Egypt's Holy Site, converted it to my religion and made my Apostle sleep there for infinity. Several turns later I did the same to USA'a Yerevan preventing Teddy and Cleo from founding religions. They apparently did not mind me blocking the district so they did not denounce me for it.

Well, there you go. As niche as being able to get religion before AI AND managing to park Missionaries on HS is, someone might find it useful. Also mind that this tile exclusiveness concerns your Great Generals as well, so include that whenever you escort your Apostles to get rid of Defender of Faith/deliver Crusade to to-be-conquered cities.

tl;dr: I won a much easier religious game because my Apostles blocked all enemy Holy Sites and their Great Prophets could not stand there to found a religion.

I thought I'd never use the new culture bomb ability, but then Cleo wanted a share of my colony.

Idea for a "Trade Victory" in CIV VI

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 12:37 AM PST

I will be shocked if new victory types are not added to Civ VI in upcoming expansion packages, particularly something to replace the Diplomatic Victory given that city-states don't just whore themselves out now. However, I very much enjoy attending to the trade and economic aspects of the game, and I'd love to see a corresponding victory type for this.

One potential idea I thought up for a "trade victory" is this: 1) Your civilization must achieve a greater gold revenue from trading with each existing city-state than every competing civilization 2) Your civilization must achieve a trade profit, from competing civilizations and city-states alike, greater than the sum of the gross profits of every competing civilization (or if this is too difficult to achieve, then some large percentage of this number, like 80% of the sum of the gross profits of every competing civilization).

Poke holes and offer your own suggestions and thoughts at will, but I would like to point out what I believe some merits of these rules are:

1) There is a greater incentive to defend city-states from warmongers, particularly those city-states you are currently trading with 2) Choosing trade routes that exclusively offer gold would be more enticing, even if you were in need of the resources offered by alternative trade routes 3) Civs going for the domination victory type would now have to take into consideration that forcing their enemies into an alliance may grant any one of those enemies the trade victory by encouraging more trade between them 4) As with the diplomatic victory type, competition for influence over city-states will increase 5) Good diplomacy between competing civs by means of trading resources and sending gifts is encouraged, as gold yields tend to be higher from foreign cities 6) Pillaging trade routes of wartime enemies becomes a more significant concern, adding to the strategical demand of players both on the offense and on the defense 7) Focus on production of scouts early game is rewarding with respect to those who first find all of the city states 8) Conversely to number 5, civilizations who are not reaping the benefits of trade are encouraged to sabotage those who are running successful markets even when the former civs would otherwise not find it wise to focus on military pursuits

Thoughts?

Did textures get more pixelated in the last patch or is it just me?

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 09:20 AM PST

I haven't played civ 6 in about two weeks and just started a new game with the latested patch. I swear the textures look more pixelated now, really noticeable on desert hills.

I haven't changed anything in my settings, so it seems strange.

Anyone else notice this?

Poland DLC not working

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 06:47 AM PST

I tried to play for the first time since finals ended and the Poland DLC didn't show up. So I logged into Steam and it says that the DLC is in my library but I can't find it, has anyone else had this problem?

Quick Question, please dont upvote

Posted: 24 Dec 2016 08:58 AM PST

I just got Civ 6. Is it possible to win diplomatically? Has the war mongering penalty been fixed from Civ 5? Playing a game in Civ 5 I would always start without paying much attention to my military only to get attacked. Hold off the opponent while building my military, asking for peace, only to be denied. Then right when the momentum swings, opponent asks for peace. How is this different? Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Is it possible to play Ynaemp scenario, using 'Multiplayer Mods Workaround'?

We really need earlier slots for Great Works of Music!

Posted: 23 Dec 2016 06:12 PM PST

I usually start generating musicians in the Renaissance era and I have to wait around for Broadcast Towers, Broadway or Bolshoi in order to use it, or I have to get the Merchant that gives two slots in a bank. Considering music patronage was huge in the Renaissance, it feels extremely strange to have Mozart wait around for thousands of years only to have him stored in a broadcast tower (which in my opinion should have at least two slots for music considering all of the other buildings allow for one Great Person to fill it)

Finally finished my first Civ VI Game...

Posted: 23 Dec 2016 11:28 PM PST

Won a Science Victory on Prince Difficulty as Sumeria. I normally ran Emperor or higher, in Civ V, but up until now, have been unable to get past the Medieval Era in Civ VI. Here are a few thoughts:

  1. The dead-ends in the Tech Tree are very glaring during a Science Victory. I was able to research Future Tech before several Industrial Era Techs were finished.

  2. Tying the Civics tree to Era seems like a good idea in theory, but in practice, it causes a lot of difficulties, as Barbarians, bonuses, and other aspects of the game scale with Era. This became moot in the late game, when I was two Eras ahead in Tech, but in the early game, while I was getting my Science machine churning, when a Civ got an Era or two ahead with Culture, I was suddenly dealing with very deadly Barbarians. Additionally, I noticed several Civilizations being curb-stomped by Atomic Era Barbarians, due to my being ahead of them in Tech.

  3. Research Agreements are useless now. They are only useful if someone has a Tech that you don't have, and if you're playing Science Victory on lower difficulties or min-maxing properly, this will never matter. This promotes turtling even more than in Civ V, where Research Agreements were an amazing way to get ahead on harder difficulties. (Note: I never went to war, and I only traded once, the entire game)

  4. Trading in general seems to have no rhyme or reason. Strategic Resources had so little value that I was being offered 1 gold per turn. Luxury Resources were about the same. Frankly, it feels like neither have weight, unlike in Civ V.

  5. On the subject of Strategic Resources, I managed to go the entire game without a source of Coal or Oil. I actually surpassed the techs and units required for Niter before I even built a Niter mine, and the only reason I had Aluminum and Uranium is because I thought, erroneously, that I needed them for Space Parts. I never built a single unit or building that required any Strategic Resources during the entire game.

  6. Once again, number of units is superior to strength of units, in terms of Score, Military Strength, and AI behavior. This was an issue in Civ V, and it seems like one that could use a fix. England was trying to go to war with Redcoats and horse archers while I was using Modern Infantry, Modern ATs, and Modern Tanks.

  7. In Civ V, I hated the World Congress. I felt like it was an irritation, but suddenly, in Civ VI, I find myself missing it. I still had 2 Civs undiscovered when I finished the Space Race. The World Congress provided a means for all Civs to meet by the Industrial Era, and it provided a reason to actively befriend the AI, in order to get your policies enacted.

  8. Spying is AMAZING. I didn't spend as much time using it as I should, but by the end of the game, I was making 1k gold every 2 turns from my spies spread all over the world. So many options, the UI is clear and concise, the upgrades are all relevant, and it feels fun and satisfying.

  9. Districts are great, but they feel too specialized, at times. I wish that there was a lower quality building available for cities that can't build a certain district, either due to lack of population or due to it being too expensive. For example, a Building that can be built in the City Center that provides a small amount of gold, outside of the Commerce District. This would especially be useful for cities founded in later eras.

  10. Builders are nice, being able to instantly build your improvements, especially in the late game, when you can get them fairly high. My favorite current play style is to use China and grab the pyramids to get 5 charges in the Ancient Era, because that's perfectly fine. That said, I feel like Workers might still have a place in Civ VI. For a lesser production cost, Workers could slowly build improvements, throughout your territory. This would require less micromanagement, but would never make them better than Builders, as I know there are many times when instant improvement is useful, especially for Civs that have abilities based around it.

Plenty of other thoughts, but I don't want to make this more of a wall of text than it already is. Civ VI still has a long way to go. They are moving in the right direction, but I strongly suggest grabbing a few mods, in the mean time, until the expacs come out.

Your thoughts on not being able to build obsolete units?

Posted: 23 Dec 2016 03:56 PM PST

Example: I want to build a siege unit.

Let's say I have done the science research to be able to build a cannon, but I don't have niter. So instead I would like to build a catapult, but I can't, because it's obsolete.

This puts me in a position where I can't build siege units at all.

Since they don't actually have the gunpowder, why don't my guys build catapults? I have no idea.

Is this a thing for game balance, or just because previous civs did it, or something I haven't thought of?
