Posted: 25 Dec 2016 04:11 AM PST I nabbed a PS1 copy of Diablo at a car boot sale a bit ago, and despite owning D2 for some time I hardly touched it beyond mucking about as a necro before my old computer died. Now I'm tempted to continue with the series but had a temporary sour taste. Overall, I really liked D1, but floors 14-16 as a melee warrior were maddening. Not hard, just spammy, ridiculous and close to boring. Almost everything was Advocates and succubus variants. Ranged enemies making up the overwhelming majority of opponents. Play was just chasing one target out of the pack, pray I didn't chase it into more aggro, hit it, hope it died, listen to the pain sound effect several times a second as the others light me up like a Christmas tree, hit the potion button when needed, repeat ad infinitum. I found myself TPing out not because I had a backpack full of blues - let alone potentially interesting ones as I had about 200K gold clogging up the Tristram streets with Wirt and the smith offering little of use - but because I ran out of potions and just had to go back to buy 15-20 more. Needing to kill fleeing enemies in as few hits as possible made choice of big weapon vs small weapon plus shield a no longer interesting choice. I couldn't help but feel like this was extremely cheap, and unfair to strength characters or any lacking AoE. It didn't ruin the game for me, and I have toyed with Nightmare a bit, but that was a silly, annoying lategame slog I hope the sequels moved past. I was BEGGING to see another wave of doomguards. The cheesing Advocate-a-thon would have been okay if not for the fact that was the ONLY play experience I was getting for a couple of hours. So how do lategame D2 and D3 compare? Is it still very potion-spammy and feels dross to certain build types, or has the addition of abilities made it feel more fair, or at least, more interesting? Thanks! [link] [comments]  |
