29 Nationals since Patch 1.1.6, this is what a Highest Placement Tier List looks like.
Posted: 19 Dec 2016 01:22 PM PST
https://twitter.com/Pablo_FAITH/status/810714703668408322
Since I will be resetting as this year ends, I want to do a full explanation.
Methods
First off, it's important to note that I wanted none of my personal subjectivity in making this list. I DO NOT think the methods are perfect (in hindsight) but after making it I did not change the methods at all (except to include a Top 24 tier). I will discuss both the positives and negatives of this method.
First off, the reason why I chose solely highest placement for each National is because I wanted the list to reflect what an individual can do with a character. By looking at highest placement we're saying "the best this character was played at this tournament netted this result" since it's an individual point, it's possible that one player alone could have gotten that result. There are limitations of this method and conclusion and I will happily discuss them.
As for how I gathered the list. First, how did I select a National. Well I decided that my opinion on what is and isn't a national was completely irrelevant. So instead, I simply used Smash Wiki's list of Nationals. Excluding any tournament after 1.1.6 and any tournament with less than 32 players. I personally DO NOT think WTFox 2 really counts for example, but I kept my personal bias away.
Afterward I went through every National and found the top 32 placings, some of these were difficult (see: Sources of Error). Each character was given either a "1", "3", "8", "16", "24", or "32" corresponding to the highest tier they achieved (as you can see, no character consistently won nationals, though Mario was in that tier for a short while), obviously, getting into a higher tier also increased your points in lower tiers (so if you made 3rd, you obviously also placed top 32).
Once all the placings were gathered, I simply summed how much each character made each tier. If a character placed within a tier 14 or more times, they were consistent within a tier. Each character was placed in the highest tier they were consistent in.
As for how I ordered tiers. Characters were ordered by consistency within their highest tier first (Ex. Cloud Top 8's more than Shiek). If two characters tied, I looked at the tier above and saw who was leading in the tier above (ex. DK and ROB have made top 32 the same amount of times, but DK has made Top 24 more often).
Limitations
So this method isn't perfect, I just want to discuss some of the faults of this method.
1) Lack of data - Some tournaments were EXTREMELY hard to find data for. Umebura 25, Canada Cup, Eclipse 2, and Smashdown world I have all labeled as "incomplete" because I am not sure about who some people played in top 32. This is why the tier below top 32 is called "Error tier", all of these characters might actually be consistent top 32, but I might just be missing the data
2) Secondaries - So secondaries are very difficult to measure and I don't think this list handles it perfectly. At the start (remember, I did not redefine methods) I decided that a secondary made that tier if they won a set within that tier. This has skewed some characters up (Olimar and recently Bowser are two guilty of this). However, this did not skew the data as bad as most would think. Nearly all the characters on the top half have multiple mains getting multiple placings in high tiers.
Interesting notes
1) This list can measure how common low tier secondaries are. Generally, if the game were close to perfectly balanced, you'd expect only half of the cast to be within Top 32. If it was very imbalanced, a lot less than half. If everyone was dual maining significantly, then a lot more than half the cast would be expressed in top 32.
2) Bayonetta is a source of error for herself. Bayo is
undeniablyseems underrated here for the sole fact that this list began after patch 1.1.6. The period after that, Bayo disappeared significantly from tournaments, looking at only more recent nationals, Bayo would be in Consistent Top 8.
3) This list has actually changed little with time. Only ROB and Luigi really dropped a lot, but they climbed back up. Diddy has always been #1 except for a period where Mario became the only one to enter "Consistent 1st Place" tier. Corrin has very slowly, but steadily, climbed up with time.
4) EDIT: Something I meant to put in here. An average of 23.5 (Stdev 4) characters are represented in top 32 of every tournament.
Full List of Nationals
GOML, 2GGT:Mex, KTARXVIII, SmashNSplash, Apex 2016, LTC, MOMOCON, CEO, WTFox2, EVO2016, 2GGT:KTAR, SmashFactor5, Sumabato4TBH, CCC, SSC2016, UmeburaSAT, Endgame, Sumabato 12, Shine, Umebura25, Syndicate 2016, 2GG:Abadango, TBH6, Canada Cup, Eclipse 2, KTARXIX, Smashdown World, UGC Smash Open, 2GGT ZeroSaga
My personal thoughts I do not think this is a perfect tier list nor a perfect method for a tier list. However, I do not think a perfect tier list exists as much as I think there is no clear best character in the game. I think the balance of this game is tight enough that I think complaining about specific character placements on a list is silly. I DO think that this list is a valuable collection of data (as is many other tier lists) and how we interpret data is as important as how we collect data.

2GG AMA for 2GGC, Genesis Saga, Civil War, ZeRo Saga, and everything else!
Posted: 19 Dec 2016 11:08 AM PST
Hey everyone Champ here from 2GG
First of all, I just want to say thank you for tuning in and supporting zero saga as well as 2GG for this entire year. Without you, we wouldn't be here.
Second of all, we made some pretty big announcements this past weekend which are:
I know many of you have questions regarding this as well as other things so I'm starting an AMA here on reddit
Feel free to ask us questions, feedback on previous events, suggestions for future events or pretty much anything.
Then at 7 PM PST when we usually stream Mega Smash Mondays, I'll instead be answering as many questions as I can live on stream. Along with me will be Luke from eSports Arena who is one of the main reason why the 2GGC is happening.
The stream will be at https://www.twitch.tv/2ggaming
So once again, leave all you questions here. I would love to answer it instantly but I'm currently working right now and I got a lot of catching up to do (fashion never sleeps) so I'll have to respond later on.
Thanks again for supporting 2GG and follow us at https://www.twitter.com/2ggaming for any news.

Give Void some credit.

People were criticizing for Void's ranking at third in Zero Saga, but he proved that he is one of the best by coming in third. He was the only one to take a set from Mk Leo and he also finally beat Nairo. He took it to game 5 versus Larry Lurr and you all have got to give him credit for what he did this weekend at Zero Saga.

2016 viewership wrap-up for Melee and Smash 4 majors
Posted: 19 Dec 2016 09:31 AM PST
Note: I don't work for twitch so these numbers are taken by hand, using the viewer count, rounded to the nearest thousand. Some tourneys I didn't watch in their entirety to I may have missed some peaks, but I'm pretty sure nothing here is egregiously wrong. Please let me know if anything is and I'll change it.
EDIT: /u/bearunlv said Smash 4 numbers were wrong, so I've added I've added twinge.tv peak viewership in a column to the right. twinge.tv tracks viewership, but I think it averages over a 5-10 minute period, so if viewership is growing quickly it won't catch it, and the peak viewership listed on twinge is always lower than the actual peak viewership by some amount. The biggest discrepancy I've found is about 5k, for GOML where twinge.tv lists the peak as 64,599, but it actually peaked at 70k. Most of the time, the difference isn't that big unless the tournament is really big (like, 60k+ viewers). This is the best I can do as an objective source of data, sorry. Probably should have taken more screencaps or something. For the Smash 4 numbers I made my estimates very optimistic, so hopefully there are no complaints about bias or anything like that.
I've been keeping track of peak viewership for major tourneys for Melee/S4 over the course of 2016. Now that we're done with DPotG and ZeRo Saga respectively, and we're basically done for the year, I thought it would be good to post the data so people know how well the scene has been doing.
Direct link to spreadsheet with twinge.tv links
Six majors listed here had Smash 4 going after Melee, and they are bolded. those tournaments were Pax Arena, EGLX, CEO 2016, LTC4, SSC 2016, and Canada Cup. CEO and Canada Cup had Smash 4 going right before SF5. Melee outperformed Smash 4 at all but CEO, and both games had very close viewership numbers at Canada Cup. At both CEO and Canada Cup, Smash 4 directly preceded SF5.
Just for comparison's sake, here's how annual tournament series' increased in viewership from 2015 to 2016:

Here are last year's numbers. These are a bit more approximate so if anyone has more clarified numbers I will gladly take them: https://i.imgur.com/h568cOp.png

Feedback Thread: ZeRo Saga Analyst Desk
Posted: 19 Dec 2016 02:31 PM PST
Thought this should have its own thread! 2GG came together with PGstats and Unrivaled Tournaments to bring an Analyst Desk that has never really been seen in Smash before. How was the first iteration? What was good? What could be better? They're super open to constructive criticism and they want to elevate Smash production to the next level!
Also, this version isn't quite the "final vision" of PG suar and UR Sage who spearheaded the project. The actual vision is a desk that weaves between the bracket matches, scripted and doesn't take away from the action or flow of the tournament. They didn't want to bite off more they could chew for this one though so they went with a more straightforward version with this attempt!

Welcome to an ongoing poll where we will try to see what /r/smashbros thinks are the 20 best Smash 4 sets of 2016.
As we approach the end of 2016, which I think we can all agree was an incredible year for both Smash 4 and Melee, I think it'd a be a fun idea to reflect on the best sets that we've seen this year. Firstly, please note that this is not just limited to top level matches - any matches worthy of being in the top 20 can be considered for voting.
How it works today:
Remember guys, this is just for fun - but that's all from me, so get voting!

In a hypothetical world where Marth is top 10, who falls out of it?

Many had contended that an optimally spaced marth couod easily be a top 10 character in smash 4, largely thanks to his progressive buffs over time. With his combination of balanced attributes, range, and damage and early kill potential, it seemed like for months he was pulling great results but was just missing the big solo major win. And last night he got it thanks to Leo
Ive had Marth as high as 11th for awhile now but goddamn you really must make an argument for him being top 10. The question is, who do you drop out of it now?
I feel like this might come down to two characters in pariticular

With 2GGC starting next year, will most other majors become obsolete?

Just curious what you guys think. 2GGC is clearly the greatest thing to happen to our scene in a long time if not ever. And obviously there are still going to be other major tournaments that will live on, especially the big ones that feature other games like EVO. But being that every month is another big chance to get into the championship and all top players will be eager to put all their resources into attending these monthly tourneys over anything else, how do you think this will effect top level play at other tourneys?
The way I see it is these other big tourneys will either have to raise their stakes to keep top level players' attention, or just continue what they're doing with less high level attendance. Hell, maybe nothing will change at all and players will just attend more stuff.
Completely speculation, but it just crossed my mind and I wanted to see what others think.
