| should you always quickbuy before a death? Posted: 07 May 2018 09:33 AM PDT let's say I have daedulus in my quickbuy, and I'm at 1500 g. The recipe is 1100, and demon edge is 2200 gold. Should I quickbuy the recipe if I'm about to die? What if I'm at 1900 gold? | Coming back to Dota after more than a year, who are the safest carries right now? Posted: 07 May 2018 07:34 PM PDT Hi all! had a quick question; Coming back to dota after a year, I mostly played safe lane carry and mid, who are the "solid" picks in those lanes now? I just need a baseline so I can start building my hero pool again. (was around 3k when i left) Thank you! submitted by /u/Wolfe244 [link] [comments] |

| Doing all hero challenge has been very helpful Posted: 07 May 2018 08:20 AM PDT Just wanted to post this here for any beginners that haven't done it yet. I'm about a third of the way through the all hero challenge and have found that even a very basic understanding of the various heros skills and play styles is extremely helpful. I'm not really becoming an expert in any hero because I only play them 1 or 2 games before moving on. But I can already see where in game I will request teammates to use their skills that I know on their hero or wait for optimal timing. Also know the strengths and weaknesses in the enemy team. Also starting to help me pick counters at the beginning. submitted by /u/derpygoat [link] [comments] |

| What am i doing wrong? Posted: 07 May 2018 04:22 PM PDT Hello ive been playing dota for a good while and consider myself somewhat good at the game over a month span i went on a win streak to peak of iirc 4.4-4.6 and am ancient 3 getting there by spamming off ench both pre and post nerf. however after takeing a week break and attempting to learn mid decently ive fallen almost to 3.7 while i did expect to lose a fair bit in the start i am a bit fustrated at this and am seeking for some sort of guideance on what im doing wrong on the mid i tried spamming (lina) i feel as if im doing reasonably well (barring recent linavstimber game where i played like a 1k) what am i doing wrong? (useing lina as a example) ill get the null tango and often (almost allways) double null and aquila farm till i get about level 5 if its a easy enough lane 4 if im gettting roamed on hard then ferry clarities and nuke wave retreat to jungle often going tread into eul however ive felt like i can be more agressive with early sb my timeings are reasonably good i think around 12 min have double null aquila tread in a good lane with some gold in reserve. On the other note i had someone say that the meta of shove lanes and farm the side camps are dead for safelaners this is sort of what i attempt to do as mid should i be freezeing the lane and go for more denys or just nuke and jungle? i will say before hand im am not lying i did do the climb to anc 3 recently with ench legit you should be able to catch the trail end of it because i just recently enabled db since i used to spam tinker and overally hate haveing comfort picks banned and never really found a use for it First time posting DB so if it does not work ill try to fix it: https://www.dotabuff.com/players/192803857 if someone had any hero suggestions for me to play for supp/off im open to them since im absolutely bored of running ench as my go to. | Mid Lane questions approaching 3k mmr Posted: 07 May 2018 07:00 PM PDT Hi. Since I have started playing mid a lot, I have been steadily increasing in mmr and I am now approaching the 3k mmr mark. One thing I have noticed more and more frequently is that the behaviors of my opponents in the mid lane are changing. Most notably, the number of players who prioritize denying my farm over getting their own farm is increasing and I find this puzzling considering some of the matchups. I am going to give a few examples of matchups where I had a terrible laning phase but won the game (sometimes by skin of my teeth). Basically I want to ask for each case I give: a. Are my opponents doing the right thing in this case? Is what they are doing really viable or are they just playing to shut me down and "win" mid without regards to their own team/farm b. What should I do in this scenario? Example 1- Invoker (QE) vs Shadow Fiend (Won with huge advantage): Approaching 3k sf is one of the most common match ups I get when I play invoker. Usually we just trade last hits. If I dont mess up first few levels then its pretty even, in fact I feel slightly ahead just because of how dangerous high lvls of cold snap are to sf. When he starts to shove the lane, I use forge spirit or meteor to shove back while the sf disappears to farm until the lane is back on his side. However, I recently had a game where the sf didnt shove the lane at all. He tried to freeze it and for ten minutes stayed in lane to deny me as much as possible. It ended up being me at lvl 7 and him at lvl 8 at 10 min mark. This player prioritized denying me so much that he didnt even get as many last hits as he should have as far as I could see. The way I have always seen this match up is, as invoker scales better than sf and sf really wants to snowball, he should have been focused on his own last hits or rather harassing me out of lane rather than trying to deny and starve my early levels. I ended up jungling with forges and alacrity and coming back to defend the tower. The reason I won this game with a huge advantage was that sf didnt make too much of an impact so my carry space to farm and got ridiculously big. Thoughts on how he played and how I played this lane? Example 2: (QOP vs SF) (Won by skin of my teeth) I tend to struggle with both sides of this match up but in this lane, I was against an sf who was ancient 2 badge (wtf matchmaking!). He started out with wraith, faerie fire, pooled tangoes and pooled ward and I started with null and my own tangoes. Lvl 1 I focused on harassl. I daggered and harassed him until he was low. I got level 2 first with the wave pushing but I did a sub-optimal blink, tanked 2 tower hits and I saw him branch and tango so I realized he got pooled and he had a faerie fire so I didnt go in (even tho he was a few hits away from dying). His salve arrived. He slowly got his advantage and starved me in the lane. He never left the lane to farm, instead making me hit lvl 6 at 8.5 mins through denies and harass. As soon as I hit lvl 6 I left the lane and found some kills through ganks. I did this constantly when my ulti was up and defending the tower as best I could so sf couldnt take it too quickly. We eventually won because his team got behind from our 5 man squad and he focused on farming till it was too late. The sf raged a lot about his team and told me never to mid again as I lost mid to sf with QOP. I had always thought that qop only had the advantage lvl 1-2 and if I cant do something in that time window then I will slowly lose the cs game? Thoughts on how he played this lane? Example 3: Invoker (QE) vs Sniper (won with huge advantage) With this matchup I got one sniper who I remember always tried to mess up my last hits (not even denying) over getting his own. Basically, theres a free last hit for him and he prioritizes messing up mine and missing his own. I guess invokers scaling is better than snipers so maybe he is doing the right thing? Invoker gets a lot of hate in low mmr so people tend to do everything in their power to shut him down including sacrificing their own farm but I feel like if this sniper focused on last hits, we would actually have a problem late game since we had no one who could close the gap easily. Thoughts? Example 4: Storm vs Sf (Won by skin of teeth) Same as Example 1. The sf never left the lane, prioritized denying me over getting his own extra farm. He was lvl 8 at 10 mins and I was lvl 7. I was doing worse farmwise since storm doesnt have passive regen like invoker. I jungled and defended tower when creeps were close and eventually our carry got big and carried me. Now, in all these examples I won the game but I cant deny that I was miserable and I doubted my own impact. I have also noticed that this happens more often as I increase in mmr not the other way around. I know I tend to play scaling mids that have more impact lategame but is sacrificing (a lot of) your own farm to shut down the enemy mid really a viable strategy? Appreciate your time and answers! submitted by /u/Dota9k1 [link] [comments] |

| General, Terrorblade, and Carry Help Posted: 07 May 2018 05:25 PM PDT Hello everyone, I'm about a 2archon 3 player (2.7k MMR I think?), and I usually just fill in ranked matchmaking to play whoever. Whenever I get carry though. It feels like I'm playing too passive, and it worries me to get put into fights. I was wondering how you are able to judge when to fight as a carry and when to farm? Also, I've been hearing about cookie challenges lately, but what exactly is it? On top of that, how is Terrorblade currently? He's my favorite hero, but I'm not sure when to pick him exactly, if I should at all. Also, what lane does he usually go in? Whenever somebody takes carry. I usually switch to either off-lane or support, so advice with those would be a lot of help as well. Thank you for at least reading this, and thank you in advance for any advice. | Ive hit a wall. Ancient 4 performance issues. Need criticism Posted: 07 May 2018 05:13 PM PDT So basically im utterly confused as to how i should itemize mid game (which i think is my recurring problem) Im by nature an ultra agressive player and keeping pressure (lane pressure, etc.) is something i would do. Although recently ive been losing games like this: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3873266126 where we would stomp early and just flat out throw mid game. I cant figure out whats wrong at all. If anyone at all can, ill be forever grateful. Im playing the sven. submitted by /u/escobeche [link] [comments] |
| Why is Hex activated late on Shadow Shaman? Posted: 06 May 2018 09:34 PM PDT I've seen Torte de Lini guide, some pro gameplay, some popular builds on Dotabuff. Many of them activate Hex around level 7, or 8. Why is that? I thought having Hex before level 6 was convenient, especially if the enemy team has Lion, since that would make him competitive compared to the other support. submitted by /u/derangedmonkey333 [link] [comments] |
| First attempt at Cookie challenge Posted: 07 May 2018 10:13 AM PDT You read about these so often on here, I finally had to make time to try them. Just wondering which ones other scrubs like myself found the most challenging since they're all focused on slightly different things. I certainly was surprised that the ones I thought would be easy or hard were a lot different from how it actually is when you try it! 10 min CS: 73/41 Faceless Void 30 min LH: 700 exactly on Anti-Mage (was disappointed not to beat my MMR, damn) Morphling - holy christ this is hard, reset several times and was not even going to be close, was maybe on track for 50-60 End the game: 10:14 with TA, dang (finally got on 2nd try: 9:31 with Luna) LH trainer: I don't know, best is 3350 or 3400 On the bright side, failing the Morphling challenge several times made normal heroes seem easy ... tried the same low-damage idea but slightly less punishing using Mirana with only brown boots (items, not clothing you perv) and improved to 70/59 It seems like some of the more advanced ones, such as 100/120 LH@10, you probably need to use something like NP/TB/Naga (Enigma?) where you can send illusions and summons around to camps and other lanes while you are hitting waves, but haven't really attempted that. And fuck Meepo, I'm not even touching that guy. submitted by /u/l33t_p3n1s [link] [comments] |
| Coming from League of Legends Posted: 07 May 2018 03:41 AM PDT I just wanted to ask the community a few questions about DotA2 and the differences/similarities! Some questions: How does the MMR work? In league 70% of the ranked player base is in bronze and silver, is this at all similar in DotA? I played DotA for about 5 hours altogether and last time I played jungle was heavily nerfed, is this still the case? Is DotA as toxic as league? What are all the different roles and what do they do? Thanks! submitted by /u/Smugtoss [link] [comments] |
| Armor and damage block Posted: 07 May 2018 03:17 PM PDT Hey guys I was curious how you decide what is more effective for a hero, armor or damage block? For example let's use two melee heroes. Doom and ogre magi. Ogre starts with a ton of armor and doom has less than one. The starting item for doom seems to be shield, why is the shield better than say a ring of protection which would double his armor? Then follow up question, later in the game, using doom again for the example, would vanguard or say a plate mail and a chain mail (let's not think of slots being an issue). submitted by /u/RikiRude [link] [comments] |
| Learning morhpling after establishing MMR on simple characters Posted: 07 May 2018 03:07 PM PDT Hey guys. Im looking for advice on how best to learn morph in an mmr where I cannot match the competition with this character. I'm sure many of you have learned some of the harder characters with very low initial win-rates. I'm curious about how you handled this process so I can learn how to approach my own scenario. I have played Dota for 7 months playing support (rubick, lion, AA) and offlane (Brew, doom). I don't play ranked, but the game places me against legend 2 players on average. I have around 600 games played. Aside from a brief period of gyro spamming (20 game 75 % winrate), I haven't played much carry. The characters did not appeal to me. However I am now very interested in morphling. The new ultimate has so much potential for creative use. I have played ten bot matches to get the basics down. I currently spam him in my pubs whenever i can get safelane carry. My winrate is 25 % on this character after ten games vs people. Morph is very challenging for me. There are so many things to consider: HP management, ethereal blade combo, ult usage, where to safely split push, etc. It feels like learning standard transmission driving after a lifetime of automatic. The amount of button pressing is extreme compared to the characters I played before. I feel that I either instantly die, or do no damage. I try to avoid fights and split push but there is usually another carry on my team who has the same plan. I struggle to get enough farm to arrive at a point where I can man-fight enemy cores. I am completely out-manned on this character in my current bracket. Games go okay when supports join me in the safe-lane, but I'm usually overtaken eventually by a point and click carry (Jug, AM). Their brain power is dedicated to macro decision making while mine is spent on mechanics. I have three major lines of questioning. 1) If, I continue losing games at this rate, how quickly will the system adjust me to a lower tier? Am I better off making a smurf? I don't really care about my mmr, just want to learn this character while ruining as few games as possible. 2) What is the best technique for me to learn him? would I be better off learning carry on simple characters like jug before eventually transitioning? I think my problem is two-fold, my mechanics are awful as well as my understanding of the carry role. 3) Any tips for a new morphing player? I realize this is hard to answer as I offer no replays to see where my specific errors lie. Any responses are greatly appreciated! Thank you. submitted by /u/jiffypop69 [link] [comments] |
| Matchmaking is locked? Posted: 07 May 2018 11:18 AM PDT Hey I tried to play multiplayer but it says play 100 matches. So does that mean community matches? Also will the MMR be counted for those? | Is It True That It's become Harder To Climb MMR With Each New Patch? Posted: 07 May 2018 09:04 AM PDT I haven't played Dota in a while, and have heard that its become harder and harder to single handedly carry games than it was patches ago. Comeback gold keeps teams closer, and it's harder to maintain a farm/item advantage, even if you farm better at your mmr bracket level. Team fights seem much more important than ever before, which is good for competitive Dota, but also makes it harder for individual efforts to contribute to consecutive wins. I remember a year or two ago, I would literally afk farm my way out of my mmr bracket, but now it seems like fights are more important than ever. Having good farming patterns is not as important as team fighting. The minute someone with a huge gold and level advantage dies, they feed over so much. So for long-time players, do you think this is true? A 4k player will obviously still climb out of 2k, and spamming a hero still can work, but without spamming your best heros, it seems like the winrate won't be all that high compared to a year or two ago. submitted by /u/asfewfewfew [link] [comments] |

| Very new to Dota looking for advice Posted: 07 May 2018 03:49 AM PDT Hello, as my title mentions I am new to the game and am a bit confused on some stuff. My main problem is keeping up in levels with others. I always seem to fall behind, Im not really sure how to efficiently farm I try to last hit as much as possible arguable I miss a few too many last hits early game. But even when I do really good at last hitting I still fall behind. What else should I do? Get jungle? I mean I do get jungle when I can, but im not sure if its enough. I mean it could be I rotate a lot to help others but Im not sure I seem to catch up in levels from doing that sometimes. TL;DR: Any beginner tips would be appreciated on how to farm efficently, gank efficiently, roles, etc. submitted by /u/ArgonianLizardPerson [link] [comments] |
| 1v3 Offlane Advice? Posted: 06 May 2018 10:17 PM PDT Recently I've been having a number of matches where I'm going 1v3 in the offlaner against an enemy safelane. In these games itself I've been suffering so badly in the laning stage I'm looking for advice to improve my offlaning skills. A few things I've noted, - I picked a weak solo laner. i.e. Centaur albeit I did pick 2nd so it's probably my fault there I got counterpicked.
- I know in pro games they always mention about losing 1 lane but winning the other 2. So in these games I do see my other 2 lanes being won because the 2 enemy supports have to stay in my lane to control me while my own team is free to move and rotate.
But despite this I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to improve my laning. I've tried pulling the creep wave but it's not always successful with 2 supports on my tail. Thoughts?? And perhaps some match IDs would be nice too. submitted by /u/Vyntekx [link] [comments] |
