/r/Civ Weekly Questions Thread - May 07, 2018

Posted: 07 May 2018 03:15 AM PDT

Greetings r/Civ.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions thread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

In addition to the above, we have a few other ground rules to keep in mind when posting in this thread:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your questions related to the Civilization series.
  • The thread should not be used to organize multiplayer games or groups.

Finally, if you wish to read the previous Weekly Questions threads, you can now view them here.

You think you might have to ask questions later? Join us at Discord.

There is currently a bug with running the Rise & Fall Expansion with the existing DLC which in some cases makes it impossible to start a game. A more detailed explanation of this bug can be found in this post.

As a temporary fix until we can get an official patch, you can download either this unofficial patch by Deliverator23, or with this patch by Gedemon.

How do you feel about a something similar to a "Story" Mode/Rule.

Posted: 07 May 2018 03:37 PM PDT

So I was playing Australian DLC scenario, and might I say, I really enjoyed Civic part where you get to The Great War(WW1) and WW2. And then I thought, would it be cool if there was whole earth kinda scenario?

Something like:

Your Civ/Country/Leader always start in the world age/era when they were in their prime(Leaders) or when country was established, or if you are someone Ancient, you start at 3000 B.C.

  • If you play as England, you either start at either 50 A.D., 10th century, or when Victoria became a Queen.

  • If you play as Russia, either 882 A.D. or when Peter became Tsar of all Russia.

  • If you play as US, either 1776, or when Teddy became a president.

More dynamic?

World is already established before you start your first turn, but depends on which Leaders got chosen into that scenario(Maybe couple hard locked Civs are always there if you didn't chose them? So that big events are guaranteed to happen).

  • If you for example chose US, you will start within established British empire but only with one or two cities in North America, and you or England, not sure who, but will have Loyalty problems, so there is time limit for that, you as US will have start to Murican Civil War(Better suits if Washington was the Leader tho) or try to be more diplomatic and eventually buying all cities on the continent.

  • Australian is kinda already made in official scenario.

  • Some suggestions in the comments would be appreciated, since I am not world historian I know most of my stuff is based off European history, since me myself is from... well... Europe.

Scripted events like:

  • Historical wars, which can use Emergency System to get you involved if you are X Civ.

Think about World Wars, or Cold War with new emergencies like one that is based on science to see which side launches Earth satellite first to gain big boost in culture/tourism over other side.

Or Golden Horde, those God damn Mongorians!

Or even have division of Korea, like having north side start to lose loyalty at alarming rate.

  • Revolution in France when world gets into late Renaissance era or in Russia when nearing end of Industrial and starting Modern era.

Putting random space here, since I have no clue how to separate those two paragraphs

Many new City-states * For example, if you fail to maintain Loyalty in Northern parts as Korea, Free-city will rather form instead into new City-state called Pyongyang on a small to medium map, but if it is on bigger map, it will become Civ known as North Korea and with a Alternative Leader and some icon showing that this is a different leader.

  • Or same can be applied to the European colonies such as Brazil, US and Australia... and maybe even Modern Canada in the future...

  • Or Spanish may conquer Aztecs, and then Phillips churros wont be enough to maintain Loyalty there, and Mexico is born as a independent Civ. Many possibilities.

Just some fun ideas, playing as Rome in ancient times with only Civs that are from similar time period and with hard locked technologies until certain amount of turns is passed would make me invest another thousand hours into the game, that is if it executed perfectly.

TL:DR Something interesting to play around with, that has many different outputs on alternative history. Scripted events depended on Civs/Leaders in the current game, starting a game in already "alive" world and making change to shape history.

mods that control how many natural wonders appear?

Posted: 07 May 2018 05:15 PM PDT

Pretty much the title. I am just looking for a way that allows an increase or decrease to the number of wonders in map creation. Something similar to the City states slider when creating a new game

Need Advice for Deity

Posted: 07 May 2018 07:08 PM PDT

So lemme explain what's going on, I'm a couple months in to Civ6, I started at prince, and have upped the difficulty every win. I won on immortal last week, and have been playing in deity, but getting my ass kicked every time. I run into the problem of either getting invaded, and not being able to hold them off, or if I focus on units then I can withstand an invasion, but usually get beat in the mid and late games because I'm far behind on whatever it is I'm going for (every game I play a random leader). I also struggle with dark ages, so basically, do you have any advice for balancing units/development

Civ6 Early-Game Questions

Posted: 07 May 2018 03:12 PM PDT

Feel free to scroll down to the questions to save yourself time, and answer whichever ones you can/want to.

  1. I am having a problem with my initial queue. I've had most success just spamming slingers to dominate my area, win early wars etc. But I don't just want to ignore slower starting playstyles. My largest issue with initial queues revolves around builders. If I don't steal them or get free ones, then it seems like I waste a lot of time by not having any of the (many) builder eurekas. But if * get an early builder, it feels wasted since I won't have the pop to work improved tiles, and most of the time I will have wasted improving generic tiles that get overwritten later by districts.

  2. How important is founding a religion if you don't plan for a faith victory?

  3. Are delegations an important part of keeping civs friendly/not having them cuck my cities with their settlers?

  4. How does production in your first city even work? If I settle on a 2 hammer 2 food tile, it stays the same right? It seems like I randomly get anywhere from 3 to 6ish production off the start, which makes your first unit so much faster or slower. I know you start off working your city tile for free, then get one more tile to work, so I ideally want to settle where both get production right?

  5. Is it really that bad to have few cities that are very large and productive? I know district bonuses etc. scale off quantity of cities, but it seems so... disappointing, to not really care about your housing/food/food buildings for a large portion of the game.

How do you use mods?

Posted: 07 May 2018 08:48 PM PDT

I just got the YnAEMP DLL 43 civs mod and I enabled it but I don't see any new civs I can play as. Is it just for AI or are you supposed to be able to play as them? I want some more civs to play as without having to pay for DLC.

Are there any mods for Civilization VI that can prioritise border expansion on land tiles over water tiles?

Posted: 07 May 2018 02:04 PM PDT

Is there a mod where the display of yields for everything is removed?

Posted: 07 May 2018 07:55 PM PDT

I'm talking about basically a mod with the numbers removed. No telling how much something costs, no telling how long something is going to take. You have to know the landscape of the world based on visuals, and culture and science much more organic. Less of a game, more of an experience.

Any ideas?

Edit: preferably Civ V.

Civ 6 dlc

Hey I really enjoy Civ 5 with all the DLC, but I was never able to get into civ 6. I see that a few months ago some DLC came out for Civ 6. What changes does this make to the game? Is it worth it?

[Simple Question] China was eliminated before I could convert their cities, can I no longer win a Religious Victory?

Posted: 07 May 2018 06:15 PM PDT

Apologies, I was unable to find the answer to this elsewhere. I'm at 6/7 Civilizations converted to my religion, but since every Chinese city was taken by Gilgamesh, I can no longer convert one.

Am I screwed?

Because seriously, one explosion in a jungle or roofed forest biome and there'd be nothing left.

Theory: The void doesn't exist within the minecraft "story". It exists because of gameplay limitations.

Posted: 07 May 2018 06:12 PM PDT

The nether has a bedrock roof and the overworld has a bedrock floor. That means the nether is beneath bedrock.

This also gives me another scary conclusion that their may be worse beasts beneath the nether or maybe some other mysterious dimention. Bedrock is heat proof.

Why does Bedrock have exclusive features that shouldn't really have to be exclusive to bedrock?

Posted: 07 May 2018 08:22 AM PDT

Something that annoys me just a little bit about the Java and Bedrock developement offices is all of these version exclusive features.

  • Drowned assume actual swimming position when chasing you.
    • Coral reefs are larger structures which even incorporate dead coral blocks.
    • Salmon have different sizes.
    • All 3000+ tropical fish have a distinct species.
    • Fallen trees which everyone's been asking the Java team for for years.
    • Improved more indepth Wither Boss which everyone has also been asking for.
    • Biome Colors show up on maps.
    • Leather Horse Armor, simply content that just doesn't exist on Java.

I'm confused as to why all of these aren't in Minecaft Java. You may be thinking to yourself "Of course most of these Update Aquatic features aren't in Java yet. The update isn't finished yet." but when you consider the four last examples, is it really wrong to assume that most of this stuff is going to remain Bedrock exclusive just like everything before?

And I understand that Bedrock has a faster engine and that is the reason for some graphical rendering differences but these examples have nothing to do with graphics.

There is no reason any of these features should be exclusive to the bedrock edition only. And people ask for these ports on a daily. I don't understand.
