Dota 2 - Hero Discussion of the Day: Darkterror, the Faceless Void (August 30th, 2018)

Hero Discussion of the Day: Darkterror, the Faceless Void (August 30th, 2018)

Darkterror, the Faceless Void

Faceless Void is a melee agility hero generally played as an offlaner or carry. Given a little time, he becomes a terrifyingly powerful hero capable of destroying entire enemy teams in seconds. Wielding his cosmically powered mace, each hit can lock his foes in time, stopping them in place. He can jump into or out of combat using Time Walk while simultaneously reverting recently taken damage. Darkterror can also pause his foes' cooldowns with Time Dilation, lowering their attack and movement speed in the process. His ultimate, Chronosphere, locks time for everything within its area of effect, giving him time to strike down any enemies caught within with no resistance from them for several seconds. Though ideally he wants teammates who can capitalize on Chronosphere, it's one of the most devastating initiation spells in the game and can easily win team fights before his opponents can even react.

Lore

Darkterror the Faceless Void is a visitor from Claszureme, a realm outside of time. It remains a mystery why this being from another dimension believes the struggle for the Nemesis Stones is worth entering our physical plane, but apparently an upset in the balance of power in this world has repercussions in adjacent dimensions. Time means nothing to Darkterror, except as a way to thwart his foes and aid his allies. His long-view of the cosmos has given him a remote, disconnected quality, although in battle he is quite capable of making it personal.

Spells

Time Walk

Rushes to a target location while backtracking any damage taken in the last 2 seconds.

Level Manacost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 40 24s Global N/A 2s Moves the hero to the targeted location. Removes any damage taken in the last two seconds.
2 40 18s Global N/A 2s Moves the hero to the targeted location. Removes any damage taken in the last two seconds.
3 40 12s Global N/A 2s Moves the hero to the targeted location. Removes any damage taken in the last two seconds.
4 40 6s Global N/A 2s Moves the hero to the targeted location. Removes any damage taken in the last two seconds.
  • Undispellable

  • Time Walk moves Faceless Void with a speed of 3000.

  • Maximum travel distance is 675 (with talent 1175).

  • Faceless Void is invulnerable during Time Walk.

  • Does not disjoint projectiles upon cast.

  • Does not travel the full distance, when targeting closer than the max distance.

  • Upon cast, any damage Faceless Void took in the last 2 seconds gets healed back up. This includes damage dealt by allies.

  • Since it is a heal, it is prevented by Ice Blast.

  • Only backtracks the 3 damage types. Heals and HP Removal are not backtracked.

  • Status buffs and debuffs, cooldowns and mana are completely unaffected.

Darkterror tears a hole in time, passing through Claszureme, and appearing back in an instant.

Time Dilation

Faceless Void traps all nearby enemies in a time dilation field for 6/8/10/12 seconds, freezing their cooldowns and slowing their movement and attack speed by 14% for each cooldown frozen.

Level Manacost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 75 40s N/A 725 6s Freezes enemies' cooldowns and slows attack and movement speed by 14% for each cooldown frozen.
2 75 34s N/A 725 8s Freezes enemies' cooldowns and slows attack and movement speed by 14% for each cooldown frozen.
3 75 28s N/A 725 10s Freezes enemies' cooldowns and slows attack and movement speed by 14% for each cooldown frozen.
4 75 22s N/A 725 12s Freezes enemies' cooldowns and slows attack and movement speed by 14% for each cooldown frozen.
  • Dispellable

  • Affects units in the Fog of War and invisible units, but not invulnerable and hidden units.

  • Does not actually freeze cooldowns, instead, it adds 6/8/10/12 seconds on ongoing cooldowns.

  • Abilities cast by affected units after the debuff is applied are not affected by the debuff.

  • Does not affect the cooldown of items or abilities without a cooldown. Does affect cooldowns of passive abilities.

  • Does not affect the recharge time of charge-based spells.

    • However, if the last charge of a spell was used and the icon shows a cooldown, that cooldown is affected.
    • Freezing that cooldown causes the recharge timer and the cooldown to desynchronize, so that the spell is still on cooldown even after gaining a charge back.
  • The slow has no stack limit. Each ability on cooldown adds a stack.

    • Also counts the cooldown of hidden abilities, like Invoker's uninvoked spells, Battle Cry, Morph or abilities granted by Aghanim's Scepter.
    • Rubick's stolen spells which are on cooldown and already lost do not count, as they are not hidden, but removed.
    • The stack count can only increase, and never decline. If an ability gets refreshed, the slow still keeps all the current stacks.
  • Abilities can still be reset (e.g. Refresher Orb) while affected by Time Dilation.

    • However, when reset in any other way than a Refresher Orb or Refresher Shard (e.g. Rearm), abilities go back on cooldown again upon losing the debuff.
  • Multiple instances of Time Dilation do not stack, but refresh the duration.

For those facing off against Darkterror, each moment seems to stretch into eternity.

Time Lock

Passive

Adds the chance for an attack to lock an enemy unit in time, stunning it and dealing bonus damage.

Level Manacost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 N/A N/A N/A N/A 1s (2s on creeps) Gives a 10% chance to stun a unit and deal 50 bonus damage with each attack
2 N/A N/A N/A N/A 1s (2s on creeps) Gives a 15% chance to stun a unit and deal 75 bonus damage with each attack
3 N/A N/A N/A N/A 1s (2s on creeps) Gives a 20% chance to stun a unit and deal 100 bonus damage with each attack
4 N/A N/A N/A N/A 1s (2s on creeps) Gives a 25% chance to stun a unit and deal 125 bonus damage with each attack
  • Timelock Freeze is dispellable.

  • Does not stack with other bashes. The bash from Skull Basher and Abyssal Blade is completely disabled for Faceless Void.

  • The proccing attack first applies the debuff, then its own damage.

  • Time Lock works against allied units, but not against wards and buildings.

  • The bonus damage is dealt in one instance together with the attack damage, and counts as attack damage as well.

    • It can be lifestealed off of, but it is not considered by crit or cleave.
    • It is also not affected by percentage-based attack damage bonuses or reductions, but can be reduced with flat reductions.
  • Adds an average of 5/11.25/20/31.25 (with talent 15/26.25/40/56.25) magical damage to every attack.

  • Time Lock uses pseudo-random distribution.

The strike of the Faceless Void lands with dimension shifting force.

Chronosphere

Ultimate

Creates a blister in spacetime, trapping all units caught in its sphere of influence and causes you to move very quickly inside it. Only Faceless Void and any units he controls are unaffected. Invisible units in the sphere will be revealed.

Level Mana Cost Cooldown Casting Range Area Duration Effects
1 150 140s 600 425 4s Pauses time inside the range of the Chronosphere, units are stopped and unable to perform any actions
2 225 130s 600 425 4.5s Pauses time inside the range of the Chronosphere, units are stopped and unable to perform any actions
3 300 120s 600 425 5s Pauses time inside the range of the Chronosphere, units are stopped and unable to perform any actions
  • Undispellable

  • Chronosphere affects all units which are not owned by Faceless Void, including buildings, wards and allies.

  • Does not affect couriers, hidden units and invulnerable heroes. All other invulnerable units are fully affected.

  • Instantly destroys Homing Missiles and The Swarm beetles.

  • While in the Chronosphere, Faceless Void and any units he controls are phased and hasted, meaning they cannot be slowed below the set value.

  • Faceless Void and illusions of him (be it his own, enemy or allied illusions) are never disabled by any Chronosphere.

  • However, the movement speed and phase is only provided to the caster of it.

  • Provides 425 radius flying vision and True Sight over the whole affected area for its duration.

  • Affected units are stunned. When other units walk inside the area, they also get affected for its remaining duration.

  • Cancels most sources of Forced Movement upon applying the disabling debuff on a unit.

  • Units inside Chronosphere can be pulled out by various spells. Force Staff, Hurricane Pike, Snowball and Geomagnetic Grip cannot move units out of Chronosphere.

When a rift opens to Claszureme, all poor souls caught within will likely never return.

Some games are lost as soon as the drafting phase starts. When You see 2 mids and 2 safelane carries you know its gonna be bad. Avoiding that would surely improve everyones experience. No more fighting for roles creating enemies in teammates before the game even starts. Pls volvo :)

How we made an AI to predict the matches of The International, had a battle with GOSU, got banned on Reddit, and how it all ended :D

Posted: 31 Aug 2018 08:47 AM PDT

As a Dota-related project, MoreMMR could not ignore The International. A month before the tournament began we have made a lot of thematic content for our social media, so as many infographics, which we also posted on Reddit, and other popular E-Sports platforms. However, our joy would be incomplete without trying to do something bigger. So we decided to launch a competition of predictions with prizes and our own prediction AI, planning to collect OVER 9000 of traffic and be satisfied with ourselves. However, everything turned out a bit different from how it was planned...

How we came up with the neural network which predicts the matches and why we need it?

Well, in fact, we already had one neural network. But let's have first things first.

Automatic player's match analysis

Our first development was the "Match Analysis" service that automatically detects mistakes in the matches of our users.

We identified 24 types of common mistakes and learned to find them in the event log of the game obtained from the match replay. We give recommendations to the users based on this analysis.

Every single recommendation is individual, has several subsets, takes into consideration a hero, in-game role, line and etc. For every recommendation we show an approximate estimation by how many percents the probability of winning was decreased due to each error.

In total, our platform analyzes over 10 000 000 user games per month (Statistics for July)

An example of the individual match analysis of one of our social media managers

"Hey, mom, I'm Miracle!" or service number two

Last year GOSU had a fun feature, which they made for the Epicenter XL tournament in Moscow. They were showing, which PRO player a user's playstyle is similar to, based on the latest games. We thought "why are we any worse?" and launched our own service of comparing our users with PRO players. Even though we made it for The International 2018, we had players not only from this tournament, and decided to keep this service as permanent and made it as an additional feature for our "match analysis".

That's how "Who you are from the PRO's" service was born. A user simply uploads a match, we compare it with the PRO players and give back the result, similar to the Facebook test like "What animal you were in your past life" :D

We took the games of the participant teams of upcoming TI8, so as top-50 teams from ELO rating. Overall, there are 200 PRO players to compare users with and there were around 100 000 PRO's matches uploaded (Including public games in order to increase the sample)

The parameters that describe a particular game can be divided into two categories:

  1. The final statistics of a player: KDA, gold, XPM, and so on. It's all clear, we just included it in the output feature vector.
  2. Final item build. Now, that's more difficult. To compare two builds correctly, we trained a neural network that converts your item build into a numeric vector. This vector is then included in the final feature vector. Overall, we've got a vector of dimension ~30.

An example of similarity analysis

Even though this feature serves entertaining purposes generally, users can still obtain some important insights from it that can improve his or her game.

The best Oracle at MoreMMR

With the basis mentioned above, we began to implement our forecast machine.

In fact, we uploaded around 2 000 matches from official tournaments. The model was learning to predict a winning probability, based on several parameters of the match.

Individual performance of each player so as the team interactions were taken into consideration.

So, totally we have:

  • AI which predicts all the results of the playoffs
  • A competition among MoreMMR users, who are competing for prizes not only against each other, but also against our AI. (By the way, many thanks to our sponsors, FonBet, WARP and HyperX, who were very enthusiastic to join our project)
  • Well, a very much actionable marketing to involve the broad masses: D

All the fun started later

MoreMMR users enthusiastically started to predict the results of the matches, discussing it in social media and so on. But it was a bit of a drama to find new users, as Facebook and VK were interpreting our project as betting and blocked the ads.

Well, that wasn't a catastrophe, and we added more Arcanas as prizes for our repost giveaway, went for Discord, forums and etc. while the trouble-free YouTube gone empty and got much less views those days. The increased CTR saved us there, which was obvious as real prizes with free participation really motivate the audience.

Something is missing, right? It was Reddit, with half a million Dota players in the main subreddit of this game. So, we sharpened our feathers and started to post about our AI and the competition around it.

How I met your GOSU

And so, we release the first post. It had the message like, "robots against people, people against each other", AI from MoreMMR and competition ...

MoreMMR AI bracket predictions before the playoffs, August 20

Everything is moderately good, the thread is gradually growing and, most importantly, does not get tons of negativity (which already was a victory :D).

However, the timid smile of hope suddenly began to resemble Harold when we saw a similar thread from GOSU, making its way to the top of Reddit's "Hot" for 5 hours already.

GOSU.AI brakcet predictions, August 20

Well, "The International lasts longer than one day, we will figure something out"

The next day, something slightly epic happened: D Our forecast was a bit better than that from GOSU, i.e. we won the first day))) Of course, we could not miss the chance to mention it and also did it before the "competitors." Naturally, our not indifferent corporate community and subscribers came to the thread so as the Dota players from Reddit were already participating in the discussion. It has led us to the top 10. :D

Generally, in a couple of days the task with the media coverage of our AI competition has evolved into a competition with GOSU. The competition in both accuracy of predictions and media coverage.

We wanted the best, you'll know the rest

Inspired by success we have made another prediction/conclusion for the previous day and started forcing our way into Reddit's top. And everything was fine, until it got worse. The evening was languid, the thread made it to the 11th place, and Reddit gave us a ban and also attributed all the involved (and not-so-involved as well) to also be banned. Aaah, it all started so well…

The reason for the 7 day ban was clear: "Vote manipulation", and it could be explained with the big desire of the team and friends in the comments from fairly fresh accounts. Evan Santa (The International 2011 player (MoscowFive), streamer) was caught in the middle of it, as he had pretty empty account which he was "just reading" from.

It was aggravated by a very impulsive final comment, where we got accused of "changing the predictions every day in order to make them look 100% correct" (Even though the post we made had such lines as "We guessed 4/6 correctly and now are giving predictions for today")

Anyway, 1 day of negotiating on Reddit and the slanderous comment was deleted. However, the ban remained. Since then, we could not dream about any TOP for the whole upcoming final days of the main tournament of the year.

https://i.redd.it/bwahsr9u9gj11.png

Putting all our complaints and objections aside (in fact, there was nobody but ourselves to be angry at, even though we wanted the better), we went with our AI's predictions to Twitter, where we participated with it in the most relevant discussions.

Of course, the coverage became smaller, nevertheless, the interest towards our forecasts remained on a good level. We ourselves were wondering how this will end.

In the accuracy of the forecasts, everything ended with a good comeback from our competitors. Before the last day, both neural networks were very close in the amount of correct predictions, both had 12 matches guessed out of 20. However, the last day our AI bet on Evil Geniuses, while the machine of our opponents predicted the victory of PSG in the lower grid and the victory of OG in the final.

Our team was supporting N0tail and the company (OG), as we are always pleased to see the underdogs winning. However, our AI was confident that EG made the conclusions out of their previous loss and that Evil Geniuses are able to win The International for the second time in their history.

The results of the AI battle:

MoreMMR AI: 12/22 correct predictions

GOSU AI: 14/22 correct predictions

Even though technically our AI lost the battle in a close competition, our team was absolutely not dissapointed with it.

https://i.redd.it/fsvz5bc97gj11.png

Firstly, this AI battle was originally conceived as entertainment, and we totally had decent fun))

Secondly, we have an excellent reserve for future tournaments and a lot of new experience.

And last but not least, our predictions were followed by more than 250 000 people, and 6000+ participants took part in the competition.

It turned out that our AI is able to predict no worse than "those fleshy creatures" (laughs with a loud evil robotic voice). The fact that among our 6,000 live participants in the prediction contest our AI took the honourable 12 place speaks for itself.

OUTRO

In general, we decided to continue. There are lots of exciting tournaments waiting for us in the future, so why should we not keep going with the AI battle?

So, GOSU, BING, and all the others who have a similar AI, let's launch an official battle of AI predictions!?

For example, there is another major tournament in October which is ESL One Hamburg. It's time to give our robots a proper training!

Title says it all, but can we get a fucking fix, im sick of having my game freeze for 1 second after MK ults and another second after that when terrorblade presses Q on 10 of my PL illusions. I play the game at 200 fps+ but the second these elements are in the game, it freezes for a full second, which can easily screw you over in a teamfight. This would be a nice bug to fix plox.
