USFIV really active on PS4

I tried online matches for the first time and i got matches one immediately after another. I didn't expect it. I got my ass whooped cause they're all very good but it was so much fun! Also the experience is so smooth, even for a trash connection like mine. I had a really positive experience.

Cody tech to beat fireballs.

Posted: 17 Aug 2018 06:25 PM PDT

Having trouble against fireballs from Guile, Sagat, or even Akuma,Ryu, or Nash? Here is some Cody tech for you!

MK ruffian kick is your move, it has a very benificial hitbox to hurtbox arrangement that makes the move trade with fireballs reliably once you get close enough.

Basically you have to maneuver to just a bit closer than halfscreen. You block a fireball, and if they like to spam more fireballs, you immediately do a MK ruffian kick.

If they threw a second fireball, you trade, they take more damage and get knocked down, and you are free to close the gap more. Why? Because of hit boxes and hurtboxes, it is a situation that highly benefits Cody. If the ruffian kick wiffs in front of their face, they can punish, so use it as a hard read.

If you mess up the timing or you are too far, you will get hit by the fireball, but the ruffian kick moves you forward, so you will not lose your screen space and can continue with walk and block or something else to get closer. Sometimes you can purposefully ruffian yourself into a fireball, walk forward slightly, block the second fireball, then MK ruffian trade with the 3rd fireball. Read their patterns and get smart about it.

Don't use it too much, but it is one of my main tools for dealing with fireball spam. Combined with the occasional EX fireball, or well timed jump in, Cody is actually pretty good against fireball characters because once you get in as Cody you have the advantage. Also, if your opponent is looking for the MK Ruffian and trying to punish, just throw out your own slow fireball, this will put them behind in a fireball war or open them up for other options. Remember if they block one of your slow fireballs you can get in with EX Zonk. If you EX Zonk at the beginning of their block stun it is a true blockstring and you are +3. If you slightly delay it you can frame trap them.

I know this is long, so read the rest at your leisure if you want more.

An alternative that works against slow fireballs at certain spacing is to just go for a VERY late V-reversal, think Nash, Sagat, Guile, Cody type of very slow fireballs. You have to do your V-reversal AFTER they have already commited to their second fireball/MK Scythe/ Guile backfist, etc..., and you will go right through it and kick them in the face. This only works if they throw a slow fireball and then throw something as a followup while you are still in blockstun, and it only works at all because cody's V-reversal has very good range. On hit you can get oki with EX Zonk in midscreen or you can just throw out a slow fireball and walk behind it, in the corner just dash forward and go for anything you want. Situational, but effective when the situation calls for it. VERY strong option versus Guile, Nash, and the Cody mirror because they can throw some VERY slow fireballs. Look for chances to do this when Guile throws a slow V-skill fireball too and leaves himself open.

Another trick that sometimes works. If they throw a slow fireball, do a very early V-skill, you will recover well before they can throw another fireball and get time to advance. It is punishable if you are too close, so use sparingly. Also the timing is very tight, if you do it too early you get hit by the fireball, too late and you leave yourself wide open. Requires training versus specific slow fireballs from Guile, Sagat, Nash, and even the Cody mirror match, etc...

One final tip VS zoners, if you ever get in, you have to make the most of it. If you successfully shimmy them, SPEND THE BAR and make it count! Smash them with HP > EX Ruffian > Ruffian. Do not get stingy with the bar when you shimmy them. Block something and use a V-reversal just to dump them in the corner. You just tortured yourself getting in, so do something with it. Spend all your cash.

If you land a throw, don't let them off the hook, you have midscreen throw oki. After throw go stLK > EX Zonk. It is a frame trap and leaves you in their face at +3 on block, on hit you can dash forward twice and get oki. If they block it and hold down back, you can technically micro-walk forward 1 frame and get a perfect tick throw/shimmy. If they try to walk out of your throw range, you can test their reactions or just go for a sweep to knock their legs out from under them. They are screwed whether they take the throws or not. In the corner if you throw them and they are down backing waiting for that stLK, you can walk forward for less than a second and get another throw.

If you block an EX DP, or land a nasty shimmy, or open them up with frame traps, or throw them 2 times in a row, your chances of winning the round start to look very good. Cody with EX bar or V-trigger is terrifying up close, use it and abuse it when you get there.

One final tip, max damage VTC combos always start with a double hit stHP or a jump in > double hit stHP, if you think they are waking up with a button, and you counter hit them with a double hitting stHP and VTC, they are taking more than 300 damage with the knife for zero EX bar, or good damage and a mixup if using VT2. Very, very nasty stuff that often leads to stun, you probably won the round if you land it. Why? Because double hitting stHP scaling is amazing. We are talking about 120 damage, 144 on counter hit, that scales as 1 hit, use it and abuse it.

noob question

Posted: 18 Aug 2018 01:50 AM PDT

i've observed some high level players who whiff throws then immediately follow it up with light attacks, is that intentional? like they're trying to bait a whiffed throw tech from an enemy then punish it? like some sort of shimmy?
