Who Is: Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred? A Diablo Lore Post

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 10:40 AM PDT

Well, I thought I'd have until Gamescom to write this up. Oh well. Guess I'll just get it done now.

Previous lore threads here.

The Eldest Brother

Mephisto, full name Dul'Mephistos, is generally considered the "oldest Prime Evil" (even though technically all the Great Evils are the same age) and, if one could consider the Burning Hells having any sort of central authority, its true leader due to being their best tactician and his skill in manipulating both mortals and his brothers. As the Lord of Hatred, his ultimate goal with Sanctuary is to turn civilizations against each other until children can't trust their parents, brothers and sisters annihilate each other, and conflict rules over all. Once the mortals have been transformed into spiteful beings like him, he plans on unleashing them against the angels of the High Heavens, who he hates most of all.

Mephisto's Realm itself is a densely populated section of the Burning Hells, usually referred to as the capital of Hell. There, the numerous demons that call it home band together based on their own ideologies, competing with one another as Mephisto further sows discord among them. Within each little demon gang itself, further scheming results in backstabbing and betrayal, with demons constantly switching from one side to another. Through this all, Mephisto watches on in joy, entertained by every self-serving plot that breaks the bonds within a group or turns mere distrust into all-out war.

Mephisto himself could be seen as a major factor in the creation of Sanctuary. He had two direct children, Lucion and Lilith, yet the Lord of Hatred despised them just as he despised anything else that moved. His daughter, Lilith, grew to resent her father just as much, and when her lover, the renegade angel Inarius, offered her the opportunity to rebel and escape the Eternal Conflict, she jumped on it.

The Sin War

When Inarius stole the Worldstone in order to create Sanctuary, Mephisto was the first demon to notice the signs. As the angels began fleeing the conflict, he called for his own troops to withdraw, believing a great change was in process, and thus he needed time to assess the situation. His brother, Baal, wasn't so keen on that strategy and invaded Pandemonium Fortress, now barren and empty without the massive Worldstone inside it. Now, without any grand prize to fight over, the Eternal Conflict itself rapidly stopped once each side realized the other was just as confused as they were.

Millennia after, the greed of humans would ultimately reveal to the Burning Hells where the Worldstone had been taken to. The Vizjerei Mage Clans, hungering to learn demonic powers, eventually learned to summon minions from the Burning Hells to (initially) learn their magics, and later turn them into an army to conquer the world with. They never, though, thought about how those demons would return home and tell everyone else about this strange new world with strange new people. The Prime Evils, upon investigating, sensed the power of the nephalem that created humanity inside them, ironically resolving to turn the humans into their own army. Together, the Three began manipulating the mortals into worshipping three benevolent opposites of themselves in a religion known as the Triune. Mephisto himself masqueraded as Mefis, the Spirit of Love, while his son Lucion led the religion on a more ground level. The Triune spread rapidly across Kehjan, with none the wiser of its true nature, until Inarius took notice of the organization and created his own religion, the Cathedral of Light, to combat it and protect the descendants of his children. Thus began the Sin War to control humanity.

When the Sin War ended with the discovery of Sanctuary by the High Heavens and the sacrifice of the edyrem Uldyssian resetting the Worldstone and removing nephalem powers from humanity for a long time, Mephisto met with the Angiris Council in order to negotiate peace. There, he offered that Sanctuary should be allowed to be neutral, that humanity could decide their own fate and allegiance without influence by angel or demon. In return, he would be given Inarius to torture for all eternity.

The Dark Exile

Of course, Mephisto never really planned on just letting potential weapons go to waste. With his brothers, he orchestrated a great plot to invade Sanctuary and finally tip the scales to win the Eternal Conflict. Long after the Sin War, the Lesser Evils began to fume at the thought of the Prime Evils, believing they had abandoned the fight with their true enemy in order to focus on distractions like humans. As a result, Azmodan led a revolution against the three brothers, banishing them to the Sanctuary they obsessed over, though not without suffering heavy losses. Naturally, letting themselves be exiled meant the Primes were now exactly where they needed to be, completing phase one of their plan. The next step was to rampage across the world, drawing the eye of the archangel Tyrael to try and stop them. Tyrael himself, bound by angelic law created by the Sin War truce, could not directly fight them, but he could give humanity a way to seal the demons forever. Therefore, he sought out the remnants of the Mage Clans of old and formed the Horadrim, giving them three soulstones that could capture the Three, preventing them from ever causing any more mayhem. These soulstones were the final part of Mephisto's plan, for the rogue angel Izual had taught the brothers how to corrupt their prisons and influence the world around them. Once they had enough unwitting pawns, the soulstones would be brought to the Worldstone where they would corrupt that as well, and with it enslave humanity to serve them.

Mephisto himself was the first brother captured by the Horadrim. Waiting for them in an urban center in Kehjistan, he was eventually bound to the sapphire soulstone, though not without killing many innocents in the area and forcing the Horadrim to hunt the other brothers outside of populated areas. Once captured, he was given to the Zakarum priests and sealed within the Temple City of Travincal.

Zakarum

Now that Mephisto was successfully captured, he could begin subtly manipulating his watchguards without suspicion. Within a couple centuries, he had already taken over the High Council of Zakarum and succeeded in getting them to shatter his soulstone into seven pieces, freeing him. When the leader of the Council, Khalim, proved immune to Mephisto's whispers, he had the others slaughter him and replaced Khalim with the priest Sankekur, who quickly became the Lord of Hatred's mouthpiece in the church.. With the church now a mockery of its former self (except for the cleric Akkhan, who noticed the subtle darkening of the church and created the Crusaders to find both the source of corruption and how to stop it), he tasked them to create the Compelling Orb to hide his lair and sent Archbishop Lazarus with King Leoric to Khanduras in order to awaken his brother Diablo.

Not long after, a freed Diablo and Baal arrived to Travincal and released Mephisto, who quickly possessed Sankekur and began enacting the final phase of their plan to regain Hell and enslave humanity. While Diablo and Baal left to set things into motion, Mephisto stayed behind to stop anyone from interfering with their hour of glory. Unfortunately for him, a group of heroes, including the sorceress Isendra, the amazon Cassia, and the necromancer Xul, arrived almost instantly to do just that. In the battle that raged after their arrival, the First Brother tried to twist the heroes against each other, magnifying their own rage and distrust within each other, but it was not enough. He was slain, recaptured in the Sapphire Soulstone, and, once Diablo was defeated, forever destroyed on the Hellforge, his spirit cast into the Black Abyss. Except, you know, not really, because he somehow ended up in the Black Soulstone instead and became part of Prime Evil Diablo. Because Diablo is now like some kind of anime where nothing ever dies.

So I guess that's that. A bit rushed, and honestly, it could very well be my last lore post. I haven't really played HotS in months now, and as a result it's a bit hard to motivate myself to make these. If anyone would like to take over these Diablo lore posts who actually can reignite the passion for these that I've lost, I'd be honored to let them take over. After all, I think it's best when a long text post like this has someone behind it who really wants to make it, rather than just feeling obligated to.

If you have any questions, I will at least be around to answer them for this post.

Mephisto is just Palpatine

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 10:20 AM PDT

He uses hate to make lightning. This reduces his cooldowns, technically making it unlimited. He persuaded a council to his bidding. Need more?

His ultimate attacks everyone on the map, like Order 66.

I will look forward to Mephistos progress with great interest.

I think that Blizzard just nailed it with Mephisto's teleport functionality

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 02:01 PM PDT

It was always hard for them to make an aggressive mobile hero without making him no way to catch type. Mephisto's teleport is different: he can engage/finish a target, he can juke, but he cannot just run away with it. His teleport is like unavoidable Worm Hole. It always puts him back after 2,5 seconds so in terms of defense it is more like Ice Block. Enemies can just wait for Mephisto to come back and if his team don't rush to save him, he is done, I think that this is very good design idea and just for it I give thumb up to Blizz.

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 07:49 AM PDT

Mephisto looks good and his abilities too but his base skin to me looks super underwhelming for him beeing a Prime Evil. After seeing his Spotlight and his Skins i really wished for a Spiked Up, Badass Masterskin version for him. I mean in the end he is a Prime Evil, lets hope he gets the Diablo Treatment where he gets a Diablo Skin again that looks a bit more badass and more like a Prime Evil.

Mephisto looks like creepy insect.

What happened with his skull? Is he wearing a mask or something? It doesn't look like Mephisto in Diablo2 or even Diablo3 portrait.

The voice actors that play multiple Heroes in Heroes of the Storm.

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 11:14 AM PDT

I've always been one to look up voice actors in video games, for as long as I can remember. For those who also have a history of doing it, you know how fun it is to recognize the actor even through the different voices they put on. I thought it might be fun to list everyone (I know of) that voices multiple Heroes! I also wanted to include potential heroes they could voice, based on their history voicing them in other Blizzard games.

-Abathur, Rexxar, and Dehaka are all voice by Steve Blum. He also voices Zoltun Kulle in Diablo 3, and Akama in World of Warcraft.

-Artanis and Garrosh are both voiced by Patrick Seitz. He also voices Archbishop Lazarus in Diablo 3.

-Arthas, Kel'Thuzad, Uther, and Xul are all voice by Michael McConnohie. He also voices Deathwing in World of Warcraft.

-Deckard Cain and Tassadar are both voice by Michael Gough. He also voices Fandral Staghelm in World of Warcraft, and the Sorcerer in Diablo 1.

-Jaina and Valla are both voiced by Laura Bailey. Fun Fact: She is married to Travis Willingham, the voice of Gazlowe. He also voices Turalyon from World of Warcraft, Karax from Starcraft 2, and Reno Jackson from Hearthstone.

-Li-Ming and Nova are both voiced by Grey Griffin. She also voices Taoshi in World of Warcraft.

-Ragnaros and Rehgar are both voiced by Matthew Mercer. He also voices McCree in Overwatch.

-Thrall and Varian are both voiced by Chris Metzen. He also voices the marine and battlecruiser in Starcraft 1 and 2.

Advanced Tips, Tricks, and Advice to People Still Learning the Game, or Who Wants to Know More

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 10:10 AM PDT

A few days ago there was a post regarding the misconception that Sylvanas is a good solo laner, and how it is ingrained in the community, so I thought about this post, where we, as a community would make an advanced guide about tips, tricks, and advice to give people, and why we do it.

I will start with a simpler one:

The easiest way to win Towers of Doom, is to control the bot lane. If you can manage to take the enemies fort, you can sneak in a lot of mercenary camps, since they are on a very short cooldown. Sure, getting altars, getting boss, and controlling the whole map is important as well, but the key to winning, is the bot lane.

Please add yours as well, if you know a good tip that others may or may not know.. those that get agreed on by most people will be added to the original post, so that it is easier to see.

So tell the others great tips, like.. who should take the Dragon Knight, or the Garden Terror in a normal draft situation with a full team? Which two people should sit in the Triglav Protector for max value? Why should people change their behaviour for the better?

Thanks in advance for expanding the guide!

Another Whitemane Full Body Drawing

Whitemane Version 2

This one is in a more striking pose.

I made a Whitemane drawing last week and I did one again today. I want to practice more as more heroes are coming and I am trying to decide who I'm gonna do next. Not Alex, there are a lot of art of her already.

I drew this around 10 hours while listening to Nvidia's RTX Conference on the Internet. I also used a mouse and keyboard.

Why people that dont want to win play ranked mode?

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 06:42 PM PDT

Why am i getting consecutive win streaks and lose streaks, and i always get different troll players. And when i speak to them i get reported and silenced. Why game bullies me so hard?

I just tryharding everygame for winning and i got shit comps for losing. Yrel only tank or just no tank, not soaking guys and tanks that soloing camps.(diamond 4 btw) When i try to lead team they blame me as toxic player and report me even i dont use bad words.

Funny part is when i get banned troll players keep playing ranked, but i cant.

I really feel like this game's community get more toxic than ever.

Mephisto's level 1 numbers seem crazy high?

Posted: 20 Aug 2018 09:25 AM PDT

Lightning nova 48 damage / 0.25 sec. It lasts 2.5 sec and also increases damage by 4% each time it hits a hero, up to 40%.

if I'm not a dumbass, that's 643,2 damage on level 1 to the same target? And if you take Furiour spark

( [W]Furious Spark Every 5th hit from Lightning Nova against the same target deals 90 bonus damage. )

That's 180 additional damage, spewing out 823,2 damage to a single target on level 1? Ofc if you manage to hit the enemy with every tick, but let's not forget the 4% increase is per enemy hero, not the same hero, and that it's an AOE spell.

With Q and E joining the club, additional 205 damage, leaving you at 1028,2 damage. To a single target. On level 1.

For reference, ETC's health pool is 2180 on level 1.

Kerrigan's QWE combo deals 585.

Chromie's QW deals 705.

Falstad QW 649

Hanzo Q + perfect scatter arrow 731 + scout arrow, then 896. and this damage is not AOE and definitely seems harder to hit than Mephisto's full combo.

I'm not yelling OP, but does it seem right?
