Weekly /r/Games Discussion - Suggestion request free-for-all

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 02:08 PM PDT

/r/Games usually removes suggestion requests that are either too general (eg "Which PS3 games are the best?") or too specific/personal (eg "Should I buy Game A or Game B?"), so this thread is the place to post any suggestion requests like those, or any other ones that you think wouldn't normally be worth starting a new post about.

If you want to post requests like this during the rest of the week, please post to other subreddits like /r/gamingsuggestions, /r/ShouldIBuyThisGame, or /r/AskGames instead.

Please also consider sorting the comments in this thread by "new" so that the newest comments are at the top, since those are most likely to still need answers.

There are many reasons to consider Octopath Traveler as one of the best games available for Nintendo Switch. An interesting story put together with several charismatic characters. A deep and addictive battle system as well as both excellent visuals and audio work together in order to create one the best releases for this year.

Cerealkillerz - Gabriel Bogdan - German - 9 / 10.0

Octopath Traveler meets the high expectations and delivers despite some minor balancing issues and tiresome boss fights an amazing RPG experience for old and new fans of the genre. The incredible variety of possible actions and ways to go through the story and the extensive battle system are making this game a must-buy for everyone that owns a Nintendo Switch.

Destructoid - Chris Carter - 7.5 / 10.0

Octopath Traveler is a small triumph in that it mostly delivers on its promise to give us eight stories worth seeing through. None of them push the envelope in any way, and several drag, but that's not a huge issue when you have so many to choose from. Even if you skip one or several tales altogether you're still going to get a handful of RPG goodness.

Digitally Downloaded - Matt Sainsbury - 5 / 5 stars

Octopath Traveler is a beautiful game that somehow never gets tired.

Eurogamer - Edwin Evans-Thirlwell - Recommended

Another fine turn-based battle system and some charming dialogue and visuals make up for an occasionally dry ensemble campaign.

FNintendo - André Reis - Portuguese - 8 / 10

Octopath Traveler tick all the boxes when it comes to recreate the formula of classic RPGs. Thanks to its use of individual story lines, which seems inspired by other iconic games of the same style, and to its marvelous visuals and amazing soundtrack, Octopath Traveler will set the players into an exploration effort that may take its time to fully take off, but will reward its players handsomely.

Gameblog - Thomas Pillon - French - 8 / 10

Ocotpath Traveler is a strong entry to the old-school J-RPG genre, even though its classicism may forbid it to reach the greatest titles its taking inspiration from. As simple as solid, this retro adventure features enough mecanics to offer a deep fighting system, well-balanced and which brillantly avoids countless levelling sessions. Too bad Octopath Traveler's narrative simply serves us eight not-so-much-connected stories, otherwise it could have been an instant classic.

GameMAG - xtr - Russian - 7 / 10

Octopath Traveler is an atmospheric game with unusual graphics, which suffers from a number of strange design and story solutions, as well as problems with interface and many minor flaws. There's also a lot of grinding, and that's may be a big dissapointment for many gamers. If you are not against grinding, try Octopath Traveler.

GameSpot - Peter Brown - 8 / 10

Octopath Traveler finds comfort in tradition but doesn't shy away from breaking the mold.

GameXplain - Unknown - Liked a lot

Hobby Consolas - Álvaro Alonso - Spanish - 89 / 100

Octopath Traveler may not be the new Final Fantasy VI, but it is no doubt a great game. With an astounding presentation and a fantastic combat system, fans of traditional JRPG should not look any farther.

Kotaku - Jason Schreier - No Verdict

Octopath Traveler is a beautiful game with one of the best soundtracks I've heard. The combat system rocks and will hopefully be used in more Square Enix games to come. There are plenty of good ideas in here. But the game is too grindy, too repetitive, too full of structural problems to be viewed as much more than another botched JRPG experiment.

Metro GameCentral - GameCentral - 8 / 10

A fantastic balancing act between old and new, creating a Japanese role-player that's full of charm, innovative ideas, and clever nods to the past.

Nintendo Life - Mitch Vogel - 9 / 10

Octopath Traveler is a special RPG, the kind of game that keeps an eye on the past while walking bravely into the future. Indeed, we'd even go so far as to say this is the best RPG you can find on the Switch to date, all elements of this game link together perfectly to make for a harmonious and immersing experience that you'll find difficult to put down. We'd recommend Octopath Traveler to both fans and newcomers of RPGs; the game does a fantastic job of straddling that line of accessibility and depth, satisfying both camps with its dizzying amount of content. Classic-inspired gameplay, an orchestrated soundtrack, and a unique approach to storytelling make this a game that you won't want to miss. This is an absolute must buy.

NintendoWorldReport - Neal Ronaghan - 9 / 10.0

The end result might not be the modern classic so many hoped for, but Octopath Traveler is an excellent RPG that's only major sin is a loose story structure.

Polygon - Jeremy Parish - No Verdict

Octopath Traveler is the magical RPG the Nintendo Switch needed

PowerUp! - Leo Stevenson - No Verdict

Octopath Traveler presents itself as a simplistic title thanks to the 16-bit HD visuals, but it's anything but. It's a deep, complex RPG, with multiple intertwining systems and a huge world to explore.

Press Start - Brodie Gibbons - 8 / 10

Octopath Traveler is truly a charming and wonderful J-RPG that has reminded me that there's still a place for old classics. Some might call it dated, I'd call it ageless and even peerless when held up against a recent generation of watered down, Westernised role-playing games. Square Enix delivers a nuanced, tactical game and an endearing cast to boot.

RPG Site - Josh Torres - 7 / 10

Octopath Traveler is an excellent game, but the elasticity of its structure proves to be the one unassailable hurdle between it and becoming a classic in its own right.

SA Gamer - Garth Holden - 8.5 / 10.0

Octopath Traveler is a slice of old-school JRPG with enough modern sensibilities to make anyone from an old veteran to someone just starting their journey feel comfortable, which mirrors how the game follows the story of people ranging from a young, naive merchant to an old knight who lost his reason to be. Get those walking shoes on, we have a long road ahead.

Shacknews - Kevin Tucker - 8 / 10

Too many developers have tried and failed to capture the nostalgic and often magical feelings that players have for the JRPG genre. Pared-down retro releases and fluffed-up remakes come and go, yet none of them seem to get things exactly right. Fortunately, Octopath Traveler succeeds where other classically-styled RPGs fail: the presentation is spot-on, the combat is addictive, and the potential for party customization is tremendous. Small stumbles with dialog and framerate can be forgiven simply because the rest of the game is an absolute delight. This is an experience that players can easily get lost in for dozens of hours, and it's sure to be counted among the best Nintendo Switch exclusives released to date.

Spaziogames - Gianluca Arena - Italian - 9 / 10.0

When old game mechanics and modern sensibility merge in such a glorious way, a smile appears on the face of million of JRPG fan: Octopath Traveler is an excellent throwback to a time when a whole world was stuffed into a tiny cartridge. After the two Bravely games, we really hope to see more in the future from Takahashi-san and his team.

The Games Machine - Danilo Dellafrana - Italian - 8.7 / 10.0

Octopath Traveler has several flaws, especially in the narrative component, but still remains a beautifully presented game, with tons of good ideas.

Twinfinite - Zhiqing Wan - 4.5 / 5.0

Octopath Traveler feels like a much more personal collection of tales that might go against what you'd typically expect from a JRPG. More than anything else, the way the characters fall together feels like coincidence rather than providence, and the game is far more concerned with telling intimate stories about grief, friendship, adventure, and redemption. You might not get to save the world, but there's joy to be had from just helping out someone in a bind and learning more about the deep history of Orsterra as you go.

USgamer - Nadia Oxford - No Verdict

There's a lot of RPG to travel through here, and so far, it's grand.

VG247 - Alex Donaldson - No Verdict

A beautiful, challenging and often utterly brilliant throwback to the golden age of Japanese RPGs that somehow scuppers its chances of being a true classic through an ambitious but ultimately flawed narrative structure.

VideoGamer - Adam Cook - 8 / 10

Octopath Traveler is a deep, diverse, interesting, sometimes risque and sometimes funny JRPG that you should play.

Voice actor Roger Craig Smith has pulled back from video games - "They're starting to take a long time and be very taxing on the voice. I've had to say 'no' to certain types of roles or time commitments."

Posted: 11 Jul 2018 09:24 PM PDT

I interviewed Roger Craig Smith about his voice acting career (Ezio in Assassin's Creed, Batman in Arkham Origins, Sonic the Hedgehog, Kylo Ren in Disney Infinity, and many more) and he had plenty of amazing advice for people who want to get into the business.
But we also spoke about how the demands of motion-capture performance in big action video games have made games less appealing than more consistent voice work, like animation and voiceover.

Quote:

"I'm gonna go in and be unable to work for two days and for what, to be part of a popular game? If the goal is run a career and gain income, we're shooting ourselves in the foot and taking a bunch of steps backwards by not being able to go out and work in the name of doing this one particular role."

Persistent Robot MMO Perpetuum Online, reborn as OpenPerpetuum by fans.

Posted: 12 Jul 2018 05:24 AM PDT

OpenPerpetuum is a single-server persistent MMO sandbox. You control robots and harvest resources to build bigger and badder robots, build an industrial empire, or just wreak havoc on other players (taking their things in the process).

Perpetuum was released 12 years ago by the indie team Avatar Creations. Since then, it has seen ups and downs in population and was eventually abandoned by its creators. The server source code was subsequently released, and players took over development. OpenPerpetuum was born.

Will OpenPerpetuum turn into a mainstream game with millions of players? Probably not. For those looking for a tight-knit game with active development however, there's fun to be had here. It's a good time to start as a new player too, as the servers have been wiped. Everyone is having a fresh start.

And of course there's no subscription fee to worry about. If you're interested in learning more:

If you get ingame and need a hand or just want a friendly chat, send a message to Sinceto in-game :)

PS: first post in a good while, hope I haven't done anything wrong ;p

Greetings /r/Games!

We, the moderators of /r/theNetherlands, are proud to announce that in cooperation with Eline Muijres from the Dutch Game Garden we'll be putting a spotlight on the Dutch games industry for the entire next week. If you're familiar with the Dutch games industry, you'll probably hold a very special place in your heart for our homegrown games; from Arjan Brussee as the Godfather of Dutch Video Gaming, to the introduction of supermarket games by Davilex, to the award-winning Horizon: Zero Dawn. For us, the Netherlands has always held a very special place in the international games industry.

So what's the plan? Well, for five days, from July 16 to July 20, we'll have various AMAs from people working in the Dutch games industry. They'll be sharing their experiences and they'll tell us about what makes the Netherlands unique as a base of operations. Some of those are groundbreaking giants of video gaming, with several years behind their backs, and some are just starting out. One thing is for certain; every experience is different.

We hope you'll recognize some of the names in this list as your personal favorites and will be joining us in asking them about their experiences in video gaming, so that these AMAs will be a grand experience for everyone involved. You can visit our thread on /r/theNetherlands here AMAs, which includes a list of confirmations, the planning, and a lot of other information.

Thanks in advance if you're joining us, and we'll keep you posted!
