How I climbed from 400 mmr to 2k mmr, for the Heralds and Guardians out there Posted: 12 Jun 2018 12:43 PM PDT Over a period of a year and a half I climbed from 400 mmr to 2k mmr, most of that time I played casually. I by no means belong at 4k mmr +, but I knew that I didn't belong at 400 mmr. I was very unhappy with where I was, because if anyone has been in the sub 500 mmr (even the sub 1k mmr) they will know that it is a very, very toxic and difficult place to climb out of. The main problems you face at that low mmr is smurfs, smurfs, very poor decision making by your teammates, and long ass games where people will spend days on end in the jungle. I realized the only way to climb out of this bracket was to end games in the early to mid game. To do this I needed to embrace the truth that I had to master a few heroes and just get better at the game. Juggernaut, Templar Assassin, and Necrophos were the heroes I ended up "mastering" (quotation marks are definitely needed). I chose these heroes because they were easy to learn and because they were able to make large impacts early to mid game during those points. My first large spike was when I would spam mid with Templar Assassin. The fastest way out of the sub 1k mmr bracket was to only rely on myself and to ensure I was calling shots once I "impressed" people with how strong I was 15 minutes in. People at that bracket will tend to listen to the shots you call when you are able to show them that you can lead them to victory, which rings true in all mmr brackets. So the lesson here is spam mid, because you can easily snowball in this lane, supports will not rotate on you and if they do they do so very poorly, you can capitalize on your ability to last hit in this lane, you will not be competing with another carry in the safe lane for last hits, and the enemy team will not realize how strong you are until you are 7-0 at 15 minutes in. My reasons for spamming mid carry was (if I didn't get mid I would just solo offlane, since one carry was in jungle two others would be in the safe lane): To capitalize on the mistakes other carries will make (see below list) Even if you play an awesome support, it will be very difficult to always put your trust in a carry that will probably farm the wrong side of the map, spend 50 minutes in the jungle and never push an objective, your warding will probably not help at all as people won't look at the mini-map until 1.2kmmr in my experience. You will often have to lane with another carry in the safe lane and offlane. Which is very counter-productive to the overall goal of just ending the game quick. Much better potential to snowball. Breakdown of mid from 400mmr to 1.5kmmr: Mistakes the other mid carry will make (if they aren't smurfs): They won't block their creeps. Get really good at blocking your creeps, but ensure you do not block too much as you don't want your creeps to get hit by your own tower. They don't have an understanding of basic lane equilibrium. Watch a few videos from Purge and BSJ about lane equilibrium, this a crucial game mechanic to master for early game which will lead to your snowball. They can't last hit The most basic mechanic you need to master if you have not already, with the mini-game Valve added you should have no excuse to struggle with last hitting. No idea when to properly harass. Proper harassment is key, when you have positioned the creeps properly (see lane equilibrium) it allows yourself one or two attacks on the enemy carry while also pulling the creeps to your side of the river. This harassment stacks up over time, and will allow you to easily scare the enemy carry from last hitting OR even better to force them into a mistake in which you can solo kill them. I cannot tell you the amount of times I baited the enemy mid under my own tower because I continued to harass them, especially with low HP and they let their emotions get the better of them. They will often listen to their teammates to rotate to another lane, and if you properly call it out (don't just do ____ is missing, call it out on your mic and to which lane they are going to) they will not achieve anything with their rotation. This will give you at least a minute of uncontested lane time, which is huge. Ensure if you HAVE to rotate to another lane, that you are coming in for a guaranteed kill. My hero of choice for spamming mid was TA. She is great at low mmr because: People don't see her often in the low mmr brackets. Strong tower hitter, this is huge because your team just doesn't push objectives at the right times or even at all in the low mmr. You have to rely on yourself often for getting the first few objectives while your team is running around chasing heroes they saw (with no plan). She can snowball very well and hits a huge power spike mid-game. Can handle almost any mid hero matchup. Traps provide you mini-wards/vision of the map, because lets be honest you are soooo lucky if you have a support in your game let alone one that is good at warding. Can farm very well in the early stages. (Stack those ancients, easy especially with traps nowadays and big gold spike for early game) Strong laner with refraction and psi blades (see lane equilibrium, people will not know how setup the creeps to prevent you from spilling your attacks on them until its too late and they are two levels behind from dying to the blades or being harassed away from exp range.) People will often dump their burst damage into you while you have refraction charges up. Strong tower hitter. Again very important. Early to mid game she can solo kill almost all heroes with a decent laning phase. Important as your PA and Slark that just lost their safe lane will have fed the enemy Bloodseeker, and you need to be able to shutdown the other team's hero. If you don't win in the mid game because people just aren't listening to you, you can rat or hopefully rely on the slark/pa on your team that has farmed for 50 minutes. Over 300 games with TA, I have a 61% win rate. I'm not boasting, it is just a matter of having a decent win rate (over 50%) and playing alot of games so that you will eventually see an upward trend. Its all about the numbers, unless you are a godlike player in which you are probably only in that bracket because you are on a smurf. When I got above 1.5k mmr, I finally saw a massive improvement in the quality of my games and was able to transition to other roles, as people actually start to play support, buy wards, have an understanding of how to lane, and other basic teamwork that is basically nonexistent in the sub 1.5kmmr. I by no means am a top tier player, but I thought I'd post this to help even just one person that may feel hopeless in the very low mmr brackets. Also I didn't see many posts from people that had experienced sub 1k mmr let alone sub 500 mmr when I was starting to 'research' how to climb out. Please feel free to correct or add anything in the comments. /r/learndota2 and /r/Truedota2 helped me alot with my climb so I posted this in both subreddits. [link] [comments] |
TIL: /r/DOTA2 can get it wrong v. early Veil of Discord discussion Posted: 12 Jun 2018 11:09 AM PDT A month or two ago, Veil of Discord was the item of discussion on the main DOTA 2 subreddit. With limited experience with the item, I was convinced by the early conversation to stop using the item. After a little research this week, and putting it to good use yesterday, I feel so foolish for not using it more on certain heroes. While I was dismayed to go from Crusader 2, to Herald 4 to start this season, I got back to basics and studied my item progression. That was where I was really starting to feel lost again. Reviewing my Jakiro items, I learned just how important Veil was to him, and other heroes. Putting into practice I played what was perhaps the best game of DOTA 2 I've had in weeks, with possibly the most pleasant group of randoms I've been grouped with in months. Not only was it a great experience from top to bottom, but using Veil, and doing so properly allowed me to completely destroy the enemy in our group fights to noticeable affect. Going back and reviewing the item discussion showed that the initial discussion was quickly squashed by people that knew what they were talking about. It does serve as a good lesson though to keep your pool of sources large, and keep an open mind to be able to healthily question what's being said. Don't be afraid to not know, or look foolish by asking. It's better to be smartest person in the room, that has spent a fair amount of time embarrassed for asking, than to remain silent and be the smartest looking idiot. [link] [comments] |
Another Q about Cookies 900LH/30 challenge Posted: 12 Jun 2018 05:42 PM PDT I'm up to 690 LH/30 on Antimage in Cookies' challenge. Wanted to ask the group a couple questions: 1) What build order are you guys using? This time around, I did quelling/stout-->battlefury (around 10min)-->brown Boots-->second bfury-->BOTs-->rapier-->octarine. Is the rapier overkill on damage? Should I go for an S&Y earlier, or get the BOTs earlier? I really liked the octarine+blink CD talent. 2) Is my battlefury timing good for an empty lobby? I'm missing a couple of LH here and there, but not a tremendous amount. Each wave is worth about 170 gold, so 340 gpm from creeps, plus the 91 passive is 431 gpm just from lane creeps. I get 3 bounty runes at start and have 200 gold left over from start, so = 320g. BF is 4400, so 4400-320 = 4080 / 431 = 9.46 minutes, so I should be getting the battlefury around 9:30. Is this right? I find on antimage when I blink to jungle to farm camps, I tend to miss creeps in lane. 3) Can someone explain the principles of a good farming pattern? For this challenge, are the secret shop jungles generally to be avoided? When should I be looking to TP across the map and farm the opposite side? [link] [comments] |
What are some heroes (with easy mechanics) that can help me get out of 1k trench? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 05:17 PM PDT I'm currently about 1k mmr I've been playing support but realized its not doing me much. Can't really see the impact. Which is why i want to learn some other heroes preferably 2 mid heroes and 2 or 3 carry heroes. Problem is im not sure which heroes to practice, that can actually get me out of this bracket. I want to practice some heroes which can produce huge impact solo and i wont have to rely on teammates a whole lot. [link] [comments] |
How to Deal with with Io + Bristleback Lane? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 08:30 PM PDT While we won the game, our lane didn't go too well and I was never too sure how to deal with this pair during the laning stage. For context, I was an Ogre Magi paired with Luna, and I was never sure when we should prioritize Io and when to prioritize the Bristleback. For even more context, here's our game/Match ID: https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3947876825 [link] [comments] |
Windranger and giving up farm in offlane Posted: 12 Jun 2018 07:46 PM PDT https://www.opendota.com/matches/3949198631 In this game, I played as WR. I originally thought we would have 2 decent offlane heroes, but last 2 picks were AM Luna so AM came with me. I tried to give him farm and we ended up fairly even in lane, but when the ganks started coming AM just didn't respond well enough and we ended having Luna and AM getting picked off over and over until we lost. What could I have done better to maybe save them, or make my impact in the game better? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jun 2018 07:18 PM PDT So how do I contact steam support regarding the new calibration? I know help.steampowered.com but where can I specifically ask about this topic cause the topics enumerated therein are does not include this issue. Please help asap, thanks [link] [comments] |
how come u can counter storm with disruptor but not kunkka? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 07:05 PM PDT Last game I got flamed by my idiot teammate beacuse I was playing kunkka and we were playing against an annoying storm spirit who uses ball lightning (makes him invulnerable). I told him kunkka x marks the spot doesnt work against storm spirit when hes in ball lightning but he thought it did and was mad. then i checked his account steam account, level 1, hasnt set up steam profile LUL. back to the question, I was testing in lobby, but how come disruptor glimpse works on storm spirit using ball lightning and even against people with euls but x marks the spot doesn't? glimpse and x mark the spot are both undispellable it says. the only way glimpse and x mark the spot dont work however is bkb but how come glimpse > x mark?? How do you splitpush with gank-heavy teams? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 11:17 AM PDT I've found that at my MMR (yet to finish calibrating, was 2k), the de facto way to win a game is to splitpush. Whether my team is fighting or farming or doing... high noon style 3 minute staredowns with the occasional CS at mid, if I split off and push towers, we win more often than not. This I do by buying 4 wards (2 sentry, 2 observer) whether as support or core, place 1 observer somewhere deep, 1 observer somewhere I intend to escape and place sentries somewhere near the lane where I stop longer than necessary. However, in case of very invis heavy teams or teams with very good mobility, even this doesn't help at all. I'd be forced to drop a sentry every time the wave stops, which is very, very expensive, delaying my items. How do I splitpush with nyx/riki/bloodcyka/whathaveyou? [link] [comments] |
What is a hero that can beat spectre in the late game? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 10:23 AM PDT Recently I have had a lot of problems with spectres in my game and nothing seems to work so far the most successful has been PL but there is a kunkka in so many games that I don't really have a good time to pick him. Posted: 12 Jun 2018 04:42 PM PDT I've seen pro players and other High MMR players go for either pair of boots on Lifestealer. What I've noticed is that Phase is usually paired with the Armlet build and Treads is usually paired with the Radiance build. Am I actually seeing a trend here or just coincidence? If it is a trend, can someone explain why this is a trend? [link] [comments] |
New Player, looking for advice Posted: 12 Jun 2018 10:19 AM PDT Hello Everyone, I am relatively new to the MOBA genre, however, I REALLY enjoy Dota 2. I have played HoTs and League a little bit, but I felt they were missing something. I have found that in Dota 2. With that being said, I am pretty nervous to even join public matches. I had about 10 hours of playing against bots before I did my first game, and I was absolutely destroyed. Now, I am currently at around 50 hours against bots, and I am slowly increasing the difficulty. I have spent those hours practicing Spirit Breaker, Elder Titan, Puck, Luna and my favorite, Treant Protector. I was told to have a wide array of heroes at my disposal, so I have tried to practice each of these heroes in multiple games (bots albeit). But, I am still concerned about being a nuisance to my team since I do not have actual experience with people. Should I just join in a game and go from there? I am cool with dealing with toxic players, I just do not want to ruin it for those people that are there to have fun and win. [link] [comments] |
Why aren't Ember Spirit's abilities able to stack camps? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 08:25 AM PDT Is this a bug, or was it part of an intentional nerf at some point? Neither sleight of fist nor activate remnant is able to aggro jungle creeps. I can't think off the top of my head of any other heroes which have this interaction - although I'm sure there are some. Does anybody know why this is? Or what of any other heroes that have a similar bug/nerf? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jun 2018 03:46 PM PDT I think the item is kind of getting pushed back and ignored more and more. It used to be meta back when there were respawn time reduction talent, then they got rid of those, but it was still good and meta. Then in 7.07, they made the item's recipe a tad bit more expensive (+50 gold, which is nothing) and easier to build + increased initial charges from 12 to 14, but they removed the ability to burst heal allies upon death and the mana regen per charge was changed to .4 from 1. The burst heal was kind of busted and getting rid of it hurt the item a good amount and those who bought it, but it was a necessary change imo. It was annoying to get someone super low and then a bloodstone carrier would just deny themselves or die and its like round 2 of the fight for the enemy team. In 7.07c, they nerfed the mana regen per charge to be .35 per charge not long after. I think this might have been around the time that mana regen was kind of changed and maybe it's about the same, but I don't know. That was a while ago. After bloodstone became situationally worse, heroes like Storm Spirit kind of just disappeared until kaya came around and made him meta again. Also the change to stat-specific buffs hurt bloodstone even more because most heroes who built bloodstone were int and now int items with mana regen (euls, scythe, linkens) became a whole lot better. I'd like to know your guy's thoughts on the item, but I just don't like the item right now. Only like 2 heroes need it as a core item (Storm and Timbersaw) and there's a couple other heroes that benefit from it (Lina, Leshrac, Tinker, Techies). Even if a bloodstone hero is picked in the pro scene, the item is pushed back for different items instead (not uncommon to see storm go like Kaya, Orchid, and BKB before Bloodstone). Also the intial mana regen you get from a new bloodstone is just 4.9, which is just under refresher, which is +5 and can't even go down, but is just 200 gold more. Idk if its supposed to be the item you get when you can reliably teamfight without dying right away or are stomping, but I still think it's not good enough for that playstyle either. I think a 4900 gold item like Bloodstone could and should be a bit better. It used to be the go-to mana regen item, but now it just gets ignored in favor of other items with more reliable mana regen. The best thing about it is the respawn timer reduction and that's about it honestly, unless if you are stomping and not dying and just getting mad charges. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jun 2018 11:09 AM PDT when you play spectre when do you decide to get vanguard, hood or blademail instead of rushing radiance.. i know u get vanguard against physical , hood against magical .. but when do u go all these 3 or at least 2? i see ramzes rushing everygame radiance .. qsnake not buying radiance at all , and gorg always goes at least 1 item before raidance like hood vanguard or blademail.. .. so when u rush radiance spectre or buy at least 2 items before radiance ? What Heroes Do You Build Armlet On? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 06:41 AM PDT I usually build armlet on LS and Huskar but never on anybody else. Is the item still viable on sven, legion and possibly others? If so what makes the item good on them? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jun 2018 01:40 PM PDT https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3948922031 In this fight (Im Luna) we really struggeled pointing down weaver. He was the only real threat to our team. Any advice what we could have done better? I think my build was pretty straight forward and was really good (IMHO) In a teamfight we really had no problem killing him but on the get go its nearly impossible. [link] [comments] |
P1 Carries - Can you rank them by how badly you need to "afk farm" with them ? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 07:03 AM PDT For exemple, I know Medusa needs tons of farm whereas a Slark will be involved a lot in ganking, or a Bloodseeker seems to also come online fast enough.. I'm having some success (finally) playing carries in super low brackets and would be interested to know more about which needs the most farm so I can pick better depending on what the rest of my team picked ! Some ranking comes to mind? Can be by "tiers" too, don't need to be ultra accurate! Thanks ! NB: Interested in Mid too, if somehow you got the time :p [link] [comments] |
Posted: 12 Jun 2018 12:58 PM PDT Match ID: 3948466706 I'm playing as jugg here. Won lane with ogre against tide and clockwerk. Tried to split push and farm a lot. But everytime there's a teamfight we lose or get wiped. I wanna know if i did anything wrong during the fight or my rotations. Also, was I the only one who cost us the game or are there any factors? Thank you to anyone who analyzes this replay! [link] [comments] |
Is there a way to rebind ctrl modifier? Posted: 12 Jun 2018 02:42 AM PDT Ctrl key is very hard to reach without moving my wrist. And when I move my wrist I always messed up my hand position afterwards then proceed to miss-press some hotkeys. Is there a way to bind ctrl to another hotkey ('v' for example)? so far I only be able to rebind alt modifier... [link] [comments] |
How to win mid lane against Huskar Posted: 12 Jun 2018 09:12 AM PDT I always have a hard time opposing huskar in mid lane. It's just like my natural aim is to not get killed rather than farm decently. Is it a natural mindset? Are there other ways/tips to perform well against the hero? Or probably, natural mid counters to huskar, if any? Thanks in advance. 4.5k here if that helps [link] [comments] |
