| How do I Get Down to Business and Defeat a Snowballing Attila? Posted: 11 Jun 2018 02:31 PM PDT I started my first game on king difficulty, standard speed, small continents plus (which, as usual, has generated something more like messy Pangaea). I'm playing as Ethiopia and going tall. I got the first religion easily, thanks to the free Steles from tradition, which has been a big help. So here's the problem: one of my closest neighbors is Attila. That worried me a lot in the early game, but thankfully he was more interested in warring my other neighbor, Austria. I figured that would be fine; they would tear each other apart and let me develop in peace. But Attila took Austria's capital on turn 66 and made them irrelevant for the rest of the game. Austria's remaining cities are on flat tundra, and provide a decent buffer zone between me and the Huns. I made the mistake of continuing to underestimate Attila. He totally wiped out Denmark even though they had the 2nd largest military in the game. He took the Aztecs' capital and will almost certainly go to war with them again. Last time the list of pointiest sticks came up, his military strength was six times mine. You'd think the rest of the civs would take notice of the obvious warmongering threat, but no, they're too busy warring Hiawatha for forward settling the entire known world. So here's the funny part. Attila... is my friend. He loved my religion and I DoF'd the Songhai empire, which is also his ally. We've been either neutral or friendly for most of the game. The only major world power in any condition to challenge the Huns is Indonesia, who seems more interested in denouncing me for the horrible crime of founding a religion 3000 years before he could. We're in the late Renaissance. I've had some mixed luck with my city placement and resource distribution. My capital is very productive with decent growth, as is my second city just up the road to the north, but my third city is a bust. It's inland on a large island with gobs of desert hills, but I got beaten to Petra. At least it has Mt. Sinai. My fourth city is on another island farther to the north. It has access to a lot of sea resources and Uluru, but is unremarkable otherwise. I know I'll have to face Attila eventually, and I really don't want to be the last name on his hit list. Ethiopia's UA will give me an edge, and I've fortified my border with Austria in case he decides to march on me. My military is all late Renaissance stuff, muskets and crossbows and frigates. He has a huge navy, but it's largely outdated. I have 4 frigates, which I don't think he's researched yet, but I can't build any more thanks to low iron reserves, and 2 caravels. I also have the strongest economy, but it's not suited to war. Half my GPT comes from a trade route to Attila's capital, and a big chunk of the rest from vulnerable sea routes. My 4th city is dependent on shipments of production. I don't think I could support a larger military. What do series veterans think? Should I take advantage of my frigates and strike now, or wait for a better opportunity? Do I get open borders with Austria and march on Atilla's capital, or wait for him to come to me? He'd have a tough time getting any ground forces to my lands without embarking. I don't think I could get much outside help; Montezuma might join the war, but he's basically irrelevant. Indonesia is more likely to attack me. The Songhai are too distant and weak to pose much of a threat; they still have massive barb problems. Hiawatha will probably help, but he has like 3 Mohawk warriors as his entire army. [link] [comments] | ||

| It's 3am, I should stop this turn. Posted: 11 Jun 2018 08:46 AM PDT 2.Oh wait, I forgot to move my frigate here, I'll turn it off after this. 3.Alright, end the turn, so I can go to sleep. 4.What? I forgot to pillage this trade route, now I can sleep after this. Back to 1. [link] [comments] | ||

| What’s your favourite “subpar” Civ? Posted: 10 Jun 2018 08:25 PM PDT There's always that one Civ. It is no Civ 5 Babylon, or Civ 6 Alexander, or Civ 5 AND 6 Korea (I think Firaxis has a hard on for Korea). In fact, if you see people mention that civ it is usually followed by "...sucks" or "...needs a buff lol". Its place in the fandom is at the bottom of most SP/MP tier lists. But you love it. You hesitate as you scroll past it on the Leader Selection screen. You offer nice trade deals, befriend the leader if they show up as an enemy. You choose to go for the billionth game on it despite having never played Poland before. And you squeak in excitement when someone places the Civ at C-Tier instead of F. So what is your favourite "subpar" Civ, and why? Personally, mine is Carthage from 5. I love coastal cities and rolling in cash from settling a crapton of coastal cities. I love the music, and Dido is cute even though she's a backstabber lol. I also like Byzantium. The theme is amazing and I do enjoy the Religion mechanics in both the civ games. For 6 - maybe the Netherlands? I don't think she's rated very highly since I haven't seen that many 6 tier lists post R&F, but polders are just amazing - yield and aesthetically. Posted: 11 Jun 2018 03:48 PM PDT I watched this video in order to fix the problem: https://youtu.be/5FWAVe1km_g I followed it to the T. And then I clicked update and restart. I checked and it is not there. Now everything is weird and takes longer to load and chrome is now gray with grey tabs. EDIT: my last post was the problem I tried to fix. Any advice?
