| Using the tier lists across all 4 games, here is how good each character is across the series. Posted: 18 May 2018 02:11 PM PDT Hello r/smashbros! Over two years ago, a user by /u/TheRealMrWillis made a post calculating how well each character has stood up across each of the Smash Brothers games. It's a post I really enjoyed, but it's without a doubt outdated. I'll get into that more later, but for all you guys who just want to see some data and results, I'll get to that first. Here are the tier lists for how good each character is across Smash BrosAnd, as a small bonus What do the tiers mean? It means, on average, this character is better than ___% of the rest of the cast, each tier being
Any problems with the data? As always, when distilling it down to just tier list placements, this doesn't account for gaps in viability at all. Most notably, Brawl Meta Knight is considered just as strong as, say, Smash 64 Pikachu is. So, why did this need an update? There are two main reasons I felt that this needed an update. First, back when u/TheRealMrWillis made this, Smash 4 didn't have an official tier list. In fact, Smash 4 wasn't even finished updating. You can see a lot has changed since 2015's reddit voted tier list. Now that we have an official tier list to work off of, the data is a little more valid then using Reddit's monthly voted. Second, I personally didn't enjoy the formula u/TheRealMrWillis used to calculate this. His was as follows p = position in the tier list for a specific character in a specific game n = number of characters in that game % = 100 - ( ( p - 1 ) * ( 100 / n ) ) Which works fine, it gives us a consistent number that works across all characters and games, but that number doesn't actually mean anything. I think MrWillis was trying to get "How much % of the cast are they better then", but this formula doesn't allow you to be better than 0% of the cast, since his formula makes you always be "better than yourself", so to speak. This, in turn, gives an ever so slight advantage to characters who sucked in earlier games. Since being above just 1 false character of yourself in Smash 64 is being above about 8% of the cast, while being above yourself in Smash 4 is being above about 2% of the cast. So, I redid this with my own formula, which was the following % = ((n-1)-(p-1))/(n-1))*100 This formula percentage is the percentage of characters you are better than in each respective game I did the math both ways, and, surprise surprise, Luigi (the worst character in 64), ended up being above Samus and Kirby in the old method, but below them in the new one. As a small note, the consistency tier list is just subtracting their highest by their lowest. It uses the same percentile range for tiering as the normal one. Random Trivia Pit: Perhaps fittingly, Pit is the closest to being, on average, 50% above the rest of the cast, getting a 49.67%. Wario is next closest, being 50.80% Zelda: Zelda's highest point was Melee. It's literately been all down hill since then. Kirby: Kirby is a mad bouncer in tier lists. His scores were 90.90% in 64, to 0% in Melee, to 48.65% in Brawl, to 9.26% in Smash 4. Jigglypuff: Just barely behind Kirby as tier list bouncer, Puff has had some extremes as well. From 54.54% in Smash 64, to 84% in Melee, to 5.40% in Brawl, to 0% in Smash 4. Pikachu and Fox: Fox overtook Pikachu since the last time this was done, but just barely. Fox scored 80.94%, and Pikachu scored 80.78%. However, Pikachu scored a 32% in inconsistency, while Fox scored 37.84%. A case can be made for either being the best in the franchise overall. Marth: If we extend our range to at least 3 games, Marth is the only character that's been in at least 3 games in S tier, along with being the only character besides Zelda that scored below 16.67% in inconsistency, a case could also be made that Marth is consistently the best character in the franchise. Diddy: If we extend our range to at least 2 games, Diddy was 4th in Brawl and 3rd in Smash 4, making him the obvious pick for best character. Bayo: If we extend our range to just 1 game, that's where this formula breaks down. Bayonetta is, technically, on average better than 100% of the cast. Which is why I didn't include an "Only 1 game" list, because that data is not that interesting. Roy: Roy is, by far, the most consistent character in the franchise so far. He's above 24% of the cast in melee, and above 24.07% of the cast in Smash 4, making his percentile range within 0.07%. For reference, the next closest, Lucario, has a range of 2.60% And that's it! | What if the focus of the new smash is updated character movesets? Posted: 18 May 2018 07:57 AM PDT Each character (for the most part) always keeps their movesets from game to game, even if the moves are outdated(eg Mario sunshine water cannon). What if the new game remixes and updates all of the longstanding characters movesets while keeping epic fanfavouites like Falcon Punch/Knee etc. Fans have been asking for a true Gannon moveset for a long time. I could see it upsetting a lot of players but at the same time it would make the new game a fresh experience. Thoughts?
