Some memories about 6.88 and ti6.

Congratulations to the 3rd direct invitee to TI 8!

With EG losing to KeenGaming, thus finishing 5th/6th without gaining much needed DPC team points, Team Secret can't be pushed out of the TOP 8 teams with their guaranteed 3rd/4th place finish at GESC Thailand.

Congratulations to:

  • Marcus "Ace" Hoelgaard
  • Yeik Nai "MidOne" Zheng
  • Adrian "Fata" Trinks
  • Yazied "YapzOr" Jaradat
  • Clement "Puppey" Ivanov

Besides the mathematical threshold currently being 5176 DPC team points, this metric is no longer usefull as DPC points are given in discrete bunches (12 remaining after GESC). The real threshold, given by the combinations of possible (and relevant) tournament outcomes, is way below.

Before GESC, there were only very few theoretical DPC endings that saw Secret finishing 9th. As of now, scoring 2nd places at ESL and the Super Major is not enough for EG to overcome Secret anymore. On the other hand, winning one of these events would lead to another team currently placed 4th-8th unable to push Secret out of the savety zone.

The next tournament, MDL Shangsha, could be the saving grace for LGD, Mineski, Newbee and VG (although not all of them at the same time).

There is no possibility of having a fixed Top 8 without the Super Major concluding.

Why the fuck do wards glow blue?

Posted: 11 May 2018 06:01 AM PDT

Why do wards emit large noticeable blue glow? Similar to the one that highlights their radius when selected, except that I didn't select or place them. Literally can't see anything when several sentries are placed close together, wtf?

Unpopular Opinion: TI8 Battle Pass is good value for the money spent and I'm perfectly happy with my purchase

I'd wager there are others who feel the same way, we just don't usually shitpost about it on Reddit.

Posted: 11 May 2018 02:39 AM PDT

Theyre just not clicking. Theyre only getting dpc due to being directly invited to tournaments. Cant see them making it through a qualifier. What do u guys think will be done to the roster once they dont qualify for ti?

Ranked Role Selection has broken Divine Matchmaking

Posted: 11 May 2018 05:45 AM PDT

My last 3 games have been +15 MMR, +15 MMR, and the latest, PLUS FIVE MATCHMAKING POINTS. Basically what is happening is that the player pool is diluted by two separate queues, so it's forced to make really stupid matches. I'm Divine 4. I shouldn't have Ancient 1 players in my strict solo queue ranked games. Fix your shit valve I literally can't play ranked any more.

My experience casting at Epicenter!

Posted: 11 May 2018 07:54 AM PDT

Hello everyone!

I know it's been a few days since epicenter finished and a few other casters have written their thoughts about the event, but I'd still like to share mine. I'll try and be as honest as possible, think it's important you guys understand the human side of the events as well as the dota/technical side! This is going to be a LOT of thoughts so kudos if you make it to the end.

I've been in love with the game of dota for the last 10-11 years or so, it really has taken up a lot (far too much) of my life. To know that I was getting the chance to try and give back to the community of a game I'd spent so much of my life playing was a huge deal to me. Nomad and I had practised a decent amount coming into the event and we'd cast a lot before. The stats sheets I'd made before the event didn't really do as much as I'd hoped. Unfortunately, Icefrog decided to drop a patch and kind of had to chuck most of what I'd researched out the window at that point when people would just be picking new heroes…

Arrival and group stage

When we first got to the hotel and dropped our things, I still don't think it had hit me even at that point what we were going to be doing for the next 10 days. Casting my first LAN was such a huge experience, never mind it being a major! When me and Nomad sat down for our dinner just after arriving I remember feeling massively overwhelmed by everyone around us. These people that I had idolised and spent so many years watching were just casually walking around me and chilling. It felt like I'd taken a wrong turn into a room I shouldn't have been in and was about to get kicked out by a security guard! As the event went on the feeling did get more natural but it was still unreal in my mind. Unfortunately, the only real time we saw them during the group stage was when they were eating since most of the day they had to practise in between the official games. In that time, you really don't want to bother them. It's their time to relax so the last thing they need is some UK guy coming and annoying them.

For the first day of casting we got told we'd be opening the event on the main stream. There wasn't a panel for the first series so all of you wonderful people had to put up with my draft analysis. I'm divine 4 so not an amazing player but I understand a decent amount of the game! I didn't realise until we walked into the room that I wouldn't have my own mouse and keyboard to work with, kind of a shock horror moment. One of the aspects I love most about casting as an analyst is being able to look around the map and find awesome little things to talk about and help people learn. It was also my first time casting with a dedicated observer and so between the 2 the cast on the first day was pretty lacklustre. We were too scared about being ourselves and it ended up being dull.

The feedback was truly horrific from people but I made a point of coming onto reddit/twitter and listening to peoples' thoughts. A lot of you will have seen me reply to a huge amount of comments about us, it's important that we tried to improve as much as we could at an event like this. I've got thick skin, so it was easy to block out the mindless comments and really read into the constructive criticism that could be found. Each day our casts got better because of this and by the end of the group stage we were doing SO much better. Just want to say thanks to redeye for sitting us down and giving us some really good feedback, he went out of his way to help us.

Can't forget the 'OH MY WORD' meme. It seemed to blow up in chat but I decided to try and not say it for the rest of the event in fear of repeating myself over and over. If any of you watch some more casts of ours from now on, you'll probably hear me dropping it in every now and then though!

Main Stage

I've already made a thread before about the main stage cast but I'll quickly go over it again. When we arrived at the event they told us that the crowd would be loud, so we needed to try and speak louder for the stream. However, when thousands of people walked into a venue, I didn't expect the CIS crowd to be quite so deafening! That combined with a crazy game basically meant I lost my head and started shouting at every possible moment, the emotion had really got to me at that point! At the end of the game I instantly realised what I'd done so for game 2 the quality of the cast got much better.

At the end of the series I was disappointed in myself that I'd let the excitement of the game get to me and affect my ability to analyse situations. That series is something I'll never forget, it helped me get much better as a caster and if I ever got to an event again it wouldn't happen! A lot of you put Kyle in bad light at that event but I remember him coming up to me later and telling me not to worry. Apparently, he'd done thing same thing at his first event so knew exactly how I felt. He was probably the funniest guy I'd met at the event so far and after that moment my respect for him went up 10-fold.

When you watch dota on twitch you kind of build up an idea of what everybody is like without really knowing who they are. It was amazing to see what everyone was really like and spend 10 days with them. The complexity guys were awesome to talk to and the Brazilians from pain were crazy, especially at the karaoke during the after party! Also, shout out to GH for putting up with me while I was absolutely smashed…

Closing thoughts

I just want to say a big thank you to epicenter for coming up with this initiative. Getting to your 1st major event as a caster is probably one of the hardest things to achieve. It was a bold move, but it helped a lot of us grow in ability and confidence. Special thanks to Dimitry for managing to not sleep for a whole 10 days while he dealt with so many issues. Also, to Olya for managing to put up with all the English talent for the same duration as our handler. Olya did a fantastic job (along with Seb/Mad from OG) of keeping me alive during the taxi back from the afterparty! All the other talent there were also amazing, Bkop especially for being massively entertaining when he lost at Fifa!

I'll be looking at doing some more co-casting in the near future with a much better idea of how I want to approach games/series. Thank you to everyone on reddit who gave us constructive criticism, you were a massive help! If anyone has managed to make it this far I'm very happy to answer any questions you may have. You can message them to me directly on reddit if you prefer not to post them on here!

Thanks,

Jack/Mofarah
