Looking for server

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 04:12 PM PDT

Looking for a server to play on. Figured I'd make a post while I scan the server listings. Mid-30s, mature, casual gamer looking for a good community. My preferences for a server:

  • Zombies run at night
  • Moderate to high activity
  • Modded (Valmod, Ravenhearst or the like; nothing too brutal)
  • Preferably doesn't wipe frequently because I only play a few times a week.
  • PVE or mostly PVE with zone-restricted PVP
  • Mature community
  • English speaking, North America time zones; preferably close to MST (UTC -7:00)

1600+ hours logged. I've played on The Walking Reddits server most of my time on this game, but the "zombies only walk" mode has gotten too boring for me, and I'm wanting to play some with some mods like Valmod and Ravenhearst for some new content. I've hosted my own server for friends several times, but none of them are interested in playing right now, so I have to reach out to the community once again for my fix.

Thanks!

Form Follows Function

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 05:00 PM PDT

Many people on this sub post pictures of the grandiose structures they've built, intricate in their beauty and their elegance. They reach towards the heavens, sail the open seas, or are just a marvel of creativity. This is not one of those posts. I have always believed that beauty is when form follows function. And the function of my buildings are to kill some goddamn zombies.

As many know, in single player survival mode, the game can be a bit lacking in end game content. So after reaching the end game for the first time and getting bored, I decided I would set upon myself a challenge. Kill as many zombies as I possibly could in a single life. My initial missteps were many - foolish mistakes any veteran player wouldn't make. But after what must have been about 20 restarts, I succeeded in my mission, and in so doing built a true monument to zombie slaughter. This is the story of that journey.

I spent my first seven days gathering resources, mining underground for experience, selling goods, and buying weapons. But I didn't have time to build a proper structure, so in desperation, I erected a (pretty shitty) funnel in which I hoped to mow the zombies down. It worked... worse than expected. After the first 20 zombies or so, I was overwhelmed and had to rely on drunk sprinting to kite the zombies. I didn't expect to be up against police officers on my first horde night, but probably a dozen came after me. It was a long, tough night, but I survived.

Clearly this strategy wouldn't succeed for long. The next day construction began on real fortifications that could withstand the zombie onslaught. I leveled a construction site to the ground and began work on an initial structure. I'd planned this out. In previous games, I'd built pit spikes around my base. But the spikes didn't do enough damage to really do much to the zombies. So I decided to put the spikes at the bottom of a 20 meter drop.

Beauty is when form follows function, and a few dozen thousand steel later, my base was looking quite beautiful. I'd discovered metal trussing and iron bars, which let me shoot zombies indoors from the warmth of my own fires. I'd discovered electricity, which lit up the zombies clear as day to shoot at. But the uneven terrain was just inconvenient for shooting the damn things. Clearly the only logical solution was to pave over the entire area and create a zombie shooting promenade of concrete and steel.

Around this time, I discovered rocket launchers. Which was quite fortunate, as I was having some difficulty on horde nights. See, the twenty meter drop was only enough to kill the weaker zombies. Which caused some problems because their corpses would block me from shooting the stronger ones. Clearly, we need to go deeper. There were some other, more mundane things about my base I didn't like. The inside floor was one block too high, so I was shooting at a slight downward angle at the zombies. When I was on the roof, the police zombies would shoot goo at me and hit the lights instead, and I'd have to fix them. The outside ring of spikes on the bottom ended up being pretty unnecessary and was just more to repair when I rocketed a pile of zombies in my pit. The inside of the base was pretty congested and hard to access workstations. And I'd recently discovered a much better city in my seed, surrounded by three (!) traders.

So I packed up my minibike, drove across the country, and started over. For my new base I chose a fine Days End Suite in the heart of the city which was, most importantly, surrounded on four sides by asphalt/road. Construction, or shall I say, deconstruction, began immediately. I knew what I wanted already. A 20 foot drop, with another 20 foot drop inside it, with a full steel promenade from asphalt to asphalt. Construction was faster this time, as I had many of my materials with me. And it wasn't long before I had a working prototype. Upgrading everything to steel took a long time, but ultimately (after probably 100,000 steel; I don't want to do the math) it was complete. And I daresay it is beautiful.

TIL Zombies track your campfire

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:24 AM PDT

Obligatory notice: Xbox Creative game

So, I'd set up in a nice cabin near a river, got a nice fire going and I go outside to be jumpscared by a zombie screaming about "Fiiire! Fiiire!" I sprayed the Screamer with my AK's entire mag

That freaked me out because A. I thought all zombies could do was moan

B. If I wanted to dry off after building in the river or stay warm in the snow zone, I'd be ringing a dinner bell for the undead

I then began building defences like a wall and spike pits. I've not been bothered by a zombie since

No screamers spawning?

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 09:26 AM PDT

I'm on ps4, Navezgane, with normal settings except no run is on. I'm doing the "You're Nothing Special" challenge and I can't find a screamer. I've got 10+ torches lighting my base up with 3 forges almost constantly running, I've tried turning the zombie spawn up to +125% and nothing and it's day 33. Not even on horde nights does one spawn. I found all the other zombies, even the feral wright, with no trouble within a day, but it's been almost 30 days in game since I started the challenge and nothing. Does PS4 have screamers? If so any idea on what else I can do to get one to spawn in?

Bahroo's map has low density grass

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 06:54 PM PDT

I was just watching bahroo play the ravenhearst mod and I noticed that there were a very low amount of grass on the ground. Is it an other mod? What did he do to have less grass? I'm having some lagging issues and I guess having less grass around would help my pc.

Pre-generated random map

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 03:26 AM PDT

Anyone know if there is a way to force the game to pre-generate the entire map when starting a new world? Perfectly happy to wait even hours for the game to be playable when starting a new world.
