Official /r/smashbros Smash Switch Character Wishlist Poll: RESULTS!

Posted: 03 Apr 2018 11:27 PM PDT

Bet you're surprised to see this, right? I'm sure nobody saw through my flawlessly executed April Fool's jape results!

...what do you mean, "it was obvious?"

There was one thing in the April Fool's post that was true; this poll did actually receive over 6,500 votes! Thanks to all of the users who took the time to fill out this poll!

Before I share the results of the poll, I'd like to brief over how the results of this survey were calculated. On the poll, users were able to select the 5 characters that they wanted to see the most in the next Smash Brothers. Users ranked these 5 characters in order of preference. Though a dropdown list of characters was provided, users were allowed to write in the names of characters who did not appear on the poll.

IN TOTAL, OVER 700 CHARACTERS RECEIVED VOTES THROUGH THE POLL!

Using this poll's results, three different scores were found. The main score, or weighted score, gave each vote a different weight based on its level of preference. This means that 1st and 2nd choice votes had much more weight than 4th or 5th choice votes. On the other hand, the unweighted score gave each vote an equal amount of weight, no matter the preference of the vote. This means that 1st choice votes had just as much weight as 5th choice votes. A score based off of only first choice votes was also found.

Several voters used the write-in section as a way to vote for more than 5 characters on the poll. If a character was selected from the dropdown list and another character was written into the same slot (Ex: I vote for Crash Bandicoot using #1 choice's dropdown list, but write in "Big Leff" using #1 choice's write-in slot), the character who was written in was given priority.

Several users also voted for the same character multiple times. In this case, every vote for the respective character besides the highest vote was thrown out (Ex: If I voted for Isaac as my choice #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5, only the choice #1 vote was counted).

Write-ins were only scored if they had some relation to Nintendo. This relation could come from appearing in a Nintendo game, appearing in a game on a Nintendo console, appearing in a franchise that has been on a Nintendo console, appearing in a game featuring Nintendo characters, or appearing in a game developed by a Smash developer.

Obvious memes were obvious.

Fun Fact there's only 1 character in all of Smash where their country of origin is not Japan

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 06:54 PM PDT

https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/444d8x/super_smash_bros_roster_countries_of_origin/

Thought I would bring this up in light of the multitude of roster speculations. Diddy has been the only non-Japanese created entry for all Smash titles as he's an original creation by the UK company Rare. I'm not trying to discourage speculation but I think people need to consider that historically Nintendo seems to favor games iconic to Japan. Which could be why prominent indie titles generally fall under the radar for these selections or the fact that Metroid - a title unpopular in the east, has little representation.

The one character I really want to see in Smash 5...

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 11:00 AM PDT

Remember that clones exist because they take little effort

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 04:34 AM PDT

A lot of people tend to complain about clones for various reasons. But everyone should remember what Sakurai has explained before about clone characters in Smash.

Clone characters are made when an opportunity for a lot of fan appeal for low effort presents itself. This means that they are not taking a "spot" on the roster that could have gone to a different character, so calling for their removal doesn't really change anything. If Sakurai feels like there is a little time free to put them in there will be clones, and otherwise, there won't. Be it new or returning ones.

On the other side, de-cloning clone-characters means putting significantly more effort into their development, at which point they do compete with other characters for the resources to be a unique character on the roster. Something which is probably warranted for some characters like Luigi and Falco in the past, but maybe not so much for the Smash 4 clones.

What I don't want to see in Smash Bros Switch: For Glory Hell

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 11:11 AM PDT

I always see the usual "improve the online" suggestion everywhere but I never saw at least one person mentioning For Glory Hell.

For those who don't know, For Glory Hell is a place where reported players play against other reported players.

While it sounds good on paper, trust me, it's NOT. Good players can get reported by salty players and they get dragged down to For Glory hell just because of a kid who doesn't know how to play. It's even worse for characters that uses projectiles. They get reported all the time because they're "spamming". DUDE the character has 3 projectiles so why not USE THEM??

But the main problem is that you can never escape For Glory hell because of the salty players reporting others, so the system keeps you in For Glory hell thinking you're a problem. It's a vicious cycle, there's no escape.

So that's why I don't want to have a For Glory hell in Smash Bros Switch. Either you fix the system so only salty players who uses offensive nametags, for example, gets in FG Hell or you don't do it at all.

That was my opinion, what do you guys think?

I sincerely hope the Donkey Kong franchise finally gets better stage/music representation this time

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 07:46 AM PDT

After 4 (technically 5 if you count the 3DS version) games, we still keep seeing jungle stages and a ton of remixes of the jungle theme. In the most recent Smash game, we got 2 jungle stages and SEVEN versions of the "DK Island Swing" theme.

It's true that we got the DK arcade stage, but I specifically want to see acknowledgement of the DKC games, besides just jungles. The closest we've come is a single music track, Stickerbrush Symphony. And after 4 Smash games, that's quite pitiful.

How about a stage on a pirate ship from DKC2? Or a minecart stage? Minecarts are synonymous with the DKC franchise now. At the very least, some more music from DKC2 and 3 would be nice.

Should Mario keep F.L.U.D.D. or should we move on?

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 02:14 PM PDT

Mario has had many different games over in his/our lifetime. Mario Sunshine being one of the best, but isn't it time to move on?

With Mario Odyssy out on the switch, now is the perfect time to replace and update his down special. With none other than his coveted hat toss. It could fly straight and do minimal knockback and low damage but allow Mario more horizontal recovery. I would love to see the crazy strats people use to safeguard with it.

TLDR: Replace water cannon with hat toss from Mario Odyssy.

Edit: A lot of suggestions abut replacing Side Special(Cape) with the hat instead. I've come to like the idea. It would allow more directional control for the hat toss and could still be a projectile deflector. while helping out his horizontal recovery, which the cape helped somewhat in that regard but this would obviously be a step up. This is so far my favorite change personally, I would very much miss the cape though as Super Mario World was the first Mario game I played. This seems to be the defining point though, the moves that make Mario Mario. The cape is more important to me than F.L.U.D.D. is and I would rather see it replaced. Many others can't imagine Mario without F.L.U.D.D. and would rather see his cape from so long ago replaced. I guess it comes down to what you personally think makes Mario the most Mario he can be

TLDR the edit: People have their own definition of mario and whats iconic so it's hard to say what if anything should change and update.

Your thoughts?

Is Melee worth Learning?

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 07:07 PM PDT

Hi! I have been playing Smash since 64, but never played it competitively until Sm4sh. I didn't even know about wavedashing until 2014. (Behind the curve I know.) SO my question for y'all is, in YOUR opinion, is it worth buying a GameCube and melee, and if not what should I focus on until Smash 5, since I know sm4sh is on the way out and seems way less popular.

Thought please!

Thank you!

A Second Attempt at a Reasonable Smash 5 Roster

Posted: 04 Apr 2018 12:49 PM PDT

After spending a whole day with my last roster getting trashed and downvoted I decided I hadn't had enough so I'm back again! I took into consideration a lot of what everyone said and feel like I've gotten a lot closer to what the Smash 5 roster might look like.

Smash for Switch Roster v2

Its a little hard to tell in the picture but red outlines would be unlockable, green outlines mark a new moveset on an old character, and yellow outlines are clones with minimal moveset differences.

A few notes about the changes that I made,

  • Transformation Characters - I removed the transformation characters, apparently I was the only one who wanted them back so they have been separated.
  • 72 total characters - 18 newcomers and 54 veterans.
  • 32 unlockable characters - I, like many I think, hope that we go back to having characters being unlockable and have selected a little under half of them to be unlockable.
  • Link and Zelda - I figure they will get minor changes to their movesets to better represent BotW. I don't figure it will be completely new but I'm guessing that their specials at least will change.
  • Ganondorf and Wolf will get major overhauls to their movesets - Ganondorf is long overdue for an overhaul that better fits him as a character and while Wolf was fairly different from Fox and Falco the fact that we had two semi-clones of Fox is too much.
  • Black Shadow - while not all that relevant by himself he would be the perfect candidate to take Ganondorf's old cloned moveset as a C. Falcon clone.
  • DLC Characters - I did not include any of the characters who would be DLC, I figure that a lot of the 3rd party and indie characters that people are wanting would make good DLC. I also expect that the newest Fire Emblem and Pokemon games will get their rep as DLC.
  • Costumes - I think there is a lot of potential for costumes that create a second character like they did with Olimar and Alph. I think Lucina would be a good candidate for this as well as Daisy.

Let me know what you think!

Edit: I'm attaching my response below about Ravio because just about every post is about him lol

Like many people have said, the biggest problem with the Zelda franchise is that outside of the core three (and really core two since Ganondorf goes back and forth on his presentation) no one else shows up in multiple games. On top of this the characters who do show up several times, Impa and Tingle, have different reasons where they might not be the best choice. Because of this I started looking at some of the best options from characters who only had one appearance. Ultimately, I decided on Ravio because of several reasons.

He was a central character from their most recent 3ds title, making him more relevant than some of the characters like Skull Kid.

He has great moveset potential with all of the different items from ALBW. His moveset in Hyrule Warriors shows how he could use the different items in unique ways. While I think Midna also has great moveset potential I think a lot of it would have to come with her riding on a wolf which might hurt her chances.

His personality is great. He was a fun character with real depth. He has a similar feel to Tingle but his character feels more dynamic with his ultimate reason for doing what he does. For this reason I feel like I could see him becoming someone like Tingle, who ends up with some lasting presence to the series.

At the end of the day I might be over inflating his chances because he is one of my favorite characters but I don't think he is as unlikely as some people think.
