Modded Skyrim in VR is really something special

I sniped this sleeping thug, then Serana raised him. He promptly decided that he’d like to spend his limited time as an unholy abomination vampire slave finishing his nap.

Thank you for being such a nice subreddit

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 03:38 AM PDT

People are always helpful, always reply to one another, and almost never get pissy with one another. It's especially noticeable when compared to some other gaming subreddits, where jokes are downvotes into the marianas trench, and people make fun instead of helping. So yes, thank you r/Skyrim for being such a nice place.

Why Ulfric Cannot Be Trusted (Spoilers)

Posted: 08 Apr 2018 12:54 AM PDT

I hope this will be an original take on a tired topic. There are those (like Balgruuf and Laila Lawgiver) who will tell you that Ulfric is not what he seems, that he's doing what he's doing for power ... for himself ... not for Skyrim. But I'd like to address the issue as if he believes everything that he's saying and is completely genuine. Even then, perhaps especially then, he cannot be trusted. In order to convince you, I'd like to use two examples from outside of TES.

Hopefully, you have read "The Name of the Wind" and "The Wise Man's Fear" by Patrick Rothfuss. If not, you really should. Anyway, in the second book, there is a creature called the Cthaeh. It's only power is that it can see every possible future. It can't control your mind or physically hurt you in any way. But it is malevolent and considered the most dangerous creature in existence. So much so that the tree in which it resides is surrounded by armed sentries just out of earshot who will kill anyone entering the area where the creature is. Why?

Well, because it sees all futures and wishes nothing but evil, it knows exactly what to say to a person to cause the greatest amount of misery and suffering. A person who hears its words is considered a "plague ship sailing into harbor." S/he will set off an ever-expanding chain of disastrous cause and effect, like a nuclear explosion.

The other example is the TV show "Homeland." In the first season, a war hero returns from years in captivity. Only the main character believes he is dangerous, but she ends up being correct. He's a terrorist sleeper agent. It's been a while, but I can't even remember if he knows what he is until it's too late. Maybe "Total Recall" would be a better example.

The reason I cannot and will not side with Ulfric (aside from being unable to betray Balgruuf) is that he is both of these things. First, we have no idea how much his time in captivity with the Thalmor affected him. Well, we have some idea from the dossier. And it's not good. One of the arguments that Stormcloak supporters make is that it doesn't matter who wins as long as the Civil War ends, and there is some truth to that. But I think he might be even more dangerous and damaging AFTER a Stormcloak victory. We have no idea how much he is susceptible to Thalmor control or how much he is programmed to do the things they need him to do while, all the time, thinking he is doing what is best for Skyrim. That is the most dangerous kind of agent.

All evidence points to Ulfric being the most useful tool in the Thalmor's arsenal in Skyrim. There is no reason to believe that will change with a Stormcloak victory and quite a bit to make one worry that things might be worse than ever.

I just don't trust him. I can't. I sympathize with what he's been through, but that doesn't make him potential leader material. Nope.

He comes in clutch by saving 90% of people's asses in the first dungeon, only to never be used again as soon as you can recruit other more badass companions.

Thieve's Guild is annoying and nonsensical

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 09:54 AM PDT

So I have several issues with the Guild in Skyrim. Probably been brought up before here at somepoint but I want to share my own thoughts anyway.

So first up the plot is a bit nonsensical in the later stages. So, in order to defeat Mercer, you apparently need the powers of the Nightingale, as Mercer has them and thus is too dangerous otherwise (nevermind if you've single handedly slaughtered Alduin or whatever). So you waste precious time to go through the process, emphasised by Karliah herself, only to be told after you've pledged your soul forever, that you won't even get any benefits until Mercer is dead because Nocturnal is still kinda pissed off.
So...by this logic, Mercer is in fact lacking any Nightingale powers of his own. So you waste time letting Mercer get away to go on a fool's errand that won't even help you achieve the goal, which was the only reason you wasted that time in the first place. Not really worth giving up your soul for either.

My next gripe is the lack of choice presented. There's only one real questline to follow, with no divergences or choices, which is a shame as I feel the game really presents the option to you well and then fails to deliver; siding with Mercer. I absolutely agree with Mercer's actions; the Thieve's Guild is just a bunch of petty thieves and lowlifes, I really don't think there's much in the way of real honour there, and I think robbing the Guild itself is hysterical and fitting, as well as keeping the Skeleton Key for oneself. I wish I'd had the option to join Mercer, or even kill (or persuade) him and keep the key for yourself, betraying Karliah.
And of course, there's also the obvious lead of Mjoll's quest against the Guild, which disappointingly doesn't go anywhere either. You can destroy the Dark Brotherhood, shallow though that quest line is, so it's a shame the Thieve's Guild remains immune. Nevermind that no one likes Maven Blackbriar, and involving her downfall in the anti-Guild questline could have been very interesting and complex also.

The Elder Scrolls V: Grave Robbers

Posted: 07 Apr 2018 07:21 PM PDT

My son and I have been playing Skyrim all week and he just said to me what I'd thought several times: "you know, when you think about it, we're really just grave robbers. I was about to take some silver ingots [in a tomb] and Lydia cleared her throat. I didn't take it cuz I figured she disapproved".
