Overwatch lore is like watching a really badly written twelve hour long movie in short two minute spurts once every 6 months and you can't remember where you left off so you just click a spot at random each time.

It's unbelievably unsatisfying and I would like to echo the "at least make the lore events permanent" stance people are sharing.

Honestly I feel new characters should go on the back burner until there's at least a comic worth of lore explaining everyone's backstories. Isn't it crazy that there are heroes in this game who basically have no real identity? Even heavily featured ones are barely knowable.

Edit:

It's a PVP game first and PVE second!

Okay, cool, but it launched with a storyline that promised to- and continues to- expand. So storyline is clearly part of it and expanding that storyline is clearly part of it, and they're doing a bad job with that.

I play for the game not the story!

Okay, me too, but the game has a story, and it's not doing very well.

Edit 2:

It's a game first, they shouldn't focus on giving characters reasonable backstories before adding new content, it's a game FIRST!

Yes, it's been a game first. Now maybe lore can have a turn at getting some proper development? Even if they did nothing but lore for a year it would still be a game first with way more additions to game than to story. Also, story is not done by the same people who make new maps/modes/etc. Ramping up the storyline side of things wouldn't damage any other side of things.

How the Shimada brothers practise wall climbing

Based on the lore that we do have, this is "Overwatch heroes ranked from most to least important"

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 12:51 PM PDT

Please remember that this is based on my own opinions and that the list will certainly not match up with yours

For clarification, I compiled this list with the idea of how important each character was to the story of Overwatch itself. While the universe that Overwatch inhabits has been shaped by them, ultimately the "plot" of the game is focused on the organization. In cases where a connection to the organization was absent I looked at overall backstory and was usually disappointed in how little there was.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT

Soldier 76: No surprise that Strike Commander Jack Morrison is at the top here. He was already one of the more developed OW heroes back when it was called Titan. He's a hero of the Omnic Crisis, the big man making all the calls, and ultimately the leader of the old guard of Overwatch. The entire history of Overwatch is his.

Reaper: Gabe Reyes is the other side of that coin though as Retribution showed. He's the man who betrayed Overwatch, began its downfall, and is the most active antagonist that we have right now. But there's also a lot of questions around him that keep him tied to his old identity as the leader of Blackwatch and even as a hero of the Omnic Crisis before that.

Winston: I place him here only because Winston is the catalyst of the new Overwatch. He initiated Recall and assumed that role as leader. We know who he is, where he came from, and why he does what he does. Winston wants to save the world, he wants to believe in change. There's a reason the game's intro is a message from him.

Tracer: Poster girl of the game, but to be honest her backstory doesn't immediately scream "I am essential to the lore!" Really, she's more of the appointed protagonist. Blizzard said "we're going to tell her story because we want to" and so it was done. She, like Winston, is a bridge between Old and New Overwatch. We've seen her first mission, multiple appearances in comics, animated shorts, and just freaking everwhere. She's even one of the few heroes whose personal life we know most about.

Mercy: Has anyone else realized just how much Mercy has given to the world of Overwatch? Her biotic technology is used by her, Ana, Moira, and 76. Supposedly she was the one who saved Genji's life. She has close ties to the Lindholms. She's one of the defining faces of Overwatch's past and testified against them when they fell. EDIT: Some commentors have pointed out that my logic here is inconsistent with the rest of the list and overall Mercy isn't as important to the lore of Overwatch itself as would appear. I'd probably move her down to Mostly Important.

Ana: It feels weird to place Ana at this spot but she's kind of a third wheel in the Morrison/Reyes dynamic. She's one of the leaders of the organization, mother to Pharah (who hardly matters), has some nice personal lore bits around her and is currently active in pursuing Reaper but I'm not sure how much she actually contributes to the story of Overwatch. She's important because she's tied to Jack and Gabe so I'm putting her up here.

Torbjorn: I almost put him above Ana actually. Torb is one of the geniuses who built the machines that humanity went to war with. He's the guy whose designs allowed Overwatch to fight back. We've seen him him on missions, in plenty of comics, and it's clear that he had a strong influence on the organization even if people don't want him in their matches.

MOSTLY IMPORTANT

Doomfist: A bit low for a villain like this but Doomfist is really secondary to Reaper in the narrative even though he's a greater scope villaim overall. It's his plan to push the Second Omnic Crisis to becoming another Global Conflict and its clear that he's got serious control over the Talon council.

Moira: A mad doctor on the Talon council, formerly of Overwatch, Blackwatch, and currently also a Minister in Oasis if that means anything. She has strong ties to multiple different heroes, locations, and events throughout the lore, and I only put her here becuase I believe its her place with Talon now that allows her to have most of her impact. Also was likely responsible for Reaper's current state, though it's unknown how intentional that was.

Reinhardt: one of the old heroes of Overwatch and something of the concience of the group. He's returning to the fight to aid his comrades, save the world, fight robots, all that fun stuff. He didn't really seem to be calling the shots though and Overwatch was clearly doing stuff without him, but we've just seen too much from the character to ignore him.

SORT OF IMPORTANT (after this point the ranking order barely matters)

Genji: An old agent of Blackwatch, member of the Shimada family, and... I feel like that's it. His association with Overwatch, his mission record, and an animated short about his family do make him a standout but he's B-list at best.

Mccree I really want this guy to be more impactful to the lore of the world but he's just not had much of a spotlight. McCree's mostly been an accessory to Reyes this entire time and really could use more focused on just him. Hopefully Retribution gives us more of a look at the man with a horrible name for a cowboy.

Sombra: yes, she had a short and is on Talon (as a contractor I guess) and has goals but it's all kind of vague. I almost feel like "Searching" hurt her character and place in the story a bit because it made her look like a hacker that was biting of more than she could chew and not much else.

Widowmaker I will only say that her backstory is tragic and I want to get more from her and she really needs more focusing on what it means to effectively be a slave to Talon. Alive was a good start but there's barely been followup. To be blunt, she's a weapon witha bunch of threads hanging off of it

Brigitte Only here because we know she joined Winston's Overwatch with Rein and is close to Torb and Mercy. She's still mostly an accessory to them at this point.

Mei: Essentially in the same boat. We don't even really know how important she was in Old Overwatch but she joined the new one so we just have to wait and see if there's any payoff.

NOT IMPORTANT

Pharah: Despite being the daughter of Ana have they done anything with her since her comic?

Hanzo Dragons was a good short but we've never really heard about Hanzo being impactful to anything more than Genji's backstory

Hog and Rat: Pairing these two together. I really struggle to see how they are important to the lore of the world since we discovered their crime spree was just a big ploy to get revenge on an NPC. Hog did irradiate the Outback though on accident.

Zarya: Dammit Searching you had so much potential and then Zarya walked right out of the plot at the end and went to Siberia

Zenyatta: Really only important to Genji. We need Zen lore.

WHO?

D.va: Arguably got negative lore in the last two years. She has no connection to Overwatch.

Bastion: yeah he's with Torb now and he got an award winning short but he's also not gotten much of an identity. He needs the Iron Giant treatment in full.

Lucio: No connection to Overwatch and really could be an NPC what with all the focus he's gotten.

Symmetra: Can we at least see her rivalry with Lucio in action? No connection to Overwatch and probably not even to Talon.

Orisa: Literally a month old.

Overwatch has no low skill heroes but does have low aim skill heroes

Posted: 06 Apr 2018 09:47 AM PDT

A common statement is this and that are low skill and usually 'low skill' is used as a pejorative yet all heroes do have a certain element of skill.

What is forgotten especially by DPS players is that this is not just a shooter but because it packaged as a shooter people focus on aim being the most important element. Hence why you have frustrated people giving up are usually DPS mains. Aim is obviously a long deemed trait for shooters in determining skill in many shooters online for decades. Yet A Sombra with a hack still needs skill in how to time that hack so it beneficial.

The very design of Overwatch has obviously not just been orbiting around aim it about a much broader stuff which is why so many people of all sorts played/play OW. If Blizzard wanted it to be just aim then we would have had all heroes aim heavy heroes. It packaged as a shooter but more like a beat-em-up or moba

What overwatch does have is low aim skill heroes. Junkrat is a low aim skill hero who does massive damage but sure Junkrat requires some skill to use him. Junkrat is low aim skill hero (he even has a line about who needs aim or something) but can take skill to use.

So really Overwatch is not just about aim and never was. Aim also is not the sole determining factor of skill in Overwatch. You can see amazing DPS still lose games because they fail to work as a team or countered. Teamwork is the determining factor. People should stop moaning about new heroes that are 'low skill' turning up.

Remember seeing Surefour great disdain he had for Brigitte in a video about her (Blitz esports or something). This notion of 'low skill' needs to be abandoned.

Overwatch isnt just about aim and stop making it out that this is the only factor of skill, only element of value that is of worth or required. Aim is not the only element of value in the game.

Also for those that will complain about such notions, ideas or comments and will inevitably get busy with personal attacking me. I do not play what are deemed 'low skill' heroes. I just know what the game is and the game is not a shooter or certainly not just a shooter. It definitely not just about your aim.

If you want a game that is only about aim then find another.
