| The bigger problem with HotS is not the matchmaking but the point system Posted: 03 Apr 2018 12:56 PM PDT Reader discretion is advised: THIS IS A WALL OF TEXT :D Hello everyone, I'm cilium, I've been playing HotS for 3 years, have been on some pro teams such as Na`Vi and EE in EU, I've been GM almost every season I've played, the highest I've been is #25. I believe over the years I've gotten quite knowledgeable about MM (not only in HotS)and can share my experience and what I think should be changed. I'm writing this long post with the hope that it will gather attention and Blizzard will finally do something about the matchmaking and the point system. I don't really know how what I'm about to explain translates to lower divisions (Bronze-Dia) but I do believe there is something really wrong with the point reward system and not necessarily the matchmaking. Don't get me wrong, the matchmaking still has some issues we are going to address but I think the bigger problem is the amount of points you win or lose. First off, I'm going to talk about my personal experience with the last 2 seasons and then I'm going to give screenshots and examples with other people. Season 2 2017 I was 117-93 #56 GM Season 3 2017 N/A Here's where the big meme starts. Season 1 2018 I was struggling with 50-55 W/L Master 2.5k pts and I was like 'WTF is going on, am I just a washed up monkey now' since I've never been that stuck over 100+ games. Then I get a long queue and I get in a game with multiple GM's and I AM THE ONE BANNING. I was banning over #10 GM as a Master 2.5k pts which means I had higher MMR than #13 GM. PROOF: Screenshot The most bizzare thing is even though I had higher MMR than top GM's I would almost never get in a game with them (only way I would is if the queue was super long). This means that Blizzard legit has different matchmaking for Master and GM games. There was some similar problem with it in Hearthstone I believe, can't really find the thread but Legend players were complaining that as long as you hit Legend, there's no point in playing because you get punished by the system. This also means that whenever I found a game quickly and I was playing with people around my points, my teammates would always be 3x worse cause the matchmaking has to compensate for my high MMR. And what do I get for it ? Some minimal positive adjustment, a crown which allows me to ban that barely has any impact on my climb but puts me in insanely hard, imbalanced games. This season is just the worst as I'm 122-139 W/L - 47% WR but I still have high MMR and I'm getting +30, which means my MMR will never normalize. Which means if I don't suddenly transform into Sonic, Snitch, Cris, Mene etc. all those insanely good HL players, it's safe to say I will just never climb or I will get to GM with negative winrate LUL. I've played over 260 games and my MMR stays high. I've seen people around my points with higher winrate but negative 10 adjustment that also finished higher than me last season, how does that make sense? In LoL if you have super high mmr, you'd get +27(0) / -7(0). In HotS you essentially get +240 / -160 On the contrary, if you have shit MMR -> in LoL you'd get +12(0) / -24(0), in HotS it's -210, +190. So even when your MMR is completely trash, you actually get quite a huge amount of points in HotS. This means the system punishes players with high MMR while it should be vice versa. There were workarounds to this before like doing bad in placements and not doing your best in your first 50~ games but this season it seems like if you had high MMR, you are just stuck with it no matter what. Example of Arcaner banning over #34 GM and #88 GM, with like almost 4k pts difference with the first guy. It's really bad but not the worst thing in the world if you are in an actual GM game because players are relatively high skilled and points are not that big of a deal. The bigger problem comes when the matchmaker finds a game with players that are 3-7k pts average MMR. Arcaner would always have teammates that are collectively worse than the enemy team just because the matchmaker has to somehow even out the game because of his high MMR. But what does he get in return for his high MMR? A shiny crown that allows him to ban and +40 pts LUL (he could even be lastpick and forced to support by some guy that has 10x lower MMR than him) Another example with a game of Chris from today. 4 Masters and 1 GM vs 5 GM's. Why does that happen? Because Chris and Alex have extremely high MMR but they don't get compensated for it, they actually get punished by having weaker teammates on their side. I get it, the game has a small player base and it's normal that games would not always be balanced but both sides should definitely get compensated differently. Players that have high MMR don't get enough points when they win and lose too many when they lose and players that have low MMR get way too many points when they win and don't lose enough when they lose. SINCE ALEXTRASZA patch the game at minute 7 starts using a lot of RAM colapsing the game, causing to reconnect and a sound delay during the first match, this happens once again after a few hours (8 matches aprox, but can happen during hero select screen) according to all the threads I have seen ignore im comments and blues on support forum, this is happening in 4gb, 6gb, and even 8gb RAM computers, but not in all of them. I have already post this in bug report in official forums, and gave all the information they asked (2 months ago) and a lot of people too, so I won't do it again. 32b was the only solution for now, but after july if this doesn't get fixed, the game will lose players. pd: pls upvote this so it doesn't get ignore, even if it doesn't affect you, and if it does, make a comment, in unity there is strength. In QM, Fenix has a winrate of more than 68%... The best build reach 75%!! I don't know if the cases where there is a Fenix in each team is treated differently in hotslog, because otherwise, the real winrate is probably around 70%. The outcome of the games are way too much linked to "which team has the Fenix". I know that the numbers don't say everything, but since day one, Fenix top both pve/pvp damage in at least 90% of the games, and often add top xp to the list. It also makes him weaker vs the Garden Terror, Triglav Protector and Dragon Knight) This is how Kel'thuzad's trait is worded: "Gain 1 Blight every time a Hero is Rooted by Frost Nova or hit by Chains of Kel'Thuzad." Not getting a quest stack when hitting an unstoppable hero with Frost Nova makes sense: you're not rooting the target hero. But Chains of Kel'thuzad not giving stacks on unstoppable heroes, even though the chains CAN hit them (and you can recast the chains from them), makes no sense with the current description. I've been playing on 32-bit client for months and never had a problem until now. I've changed to 64-bit client and it didn't crash anymore BUT I get stuttering once in a while and the game overall is more sluggish, quits very slowly. Also it consumes a lot of RAM, 7 gb or more (I have 8 gb) and this never happened before. It also makes no sense for this kind of game to require that much. What happened? Is it a memory leak? Did they mess up the game with the Fenix patch? Anyone else having this issue? | A Master/GM’s Perspective on HL Posted: 03 Apr 2018 10:22 AM PDT Where are we coming from? Last Season: 2 Major Issues #1: Blizzard introduces Performance-Based Matchmaking, lots of players in lower leagues get excited thinking this is their chance to "break out" of the league they are stuck in. Expectation: The new system will punish the bad players within their league, and reward them for dying less/ playing better overall. Reality: The system is purely based on numbers, ie: xp soaked, hero damage done. So instead, you are encouraged to play characters like Ragnaros, Gul'Daniel, and Nazeebo and receive +40 points per game because you've "outperformed" your teammates on the stat-board and rarely died. This leaves tank players like myself stuck with -10 points per game because we are controlling vision on Muradin/ETC (doing things that don't appear on the score screen). #2: While this PBMM is negatively affecting games, Blizzard has also decided to let placements take a new or returning player all the way up to Masters 1000. This leads to people with higher QM mmr who haven't played HL to be placed immediately into Master. This also results in more mistakes like Gold players jumping up 3 leagues to become instant Master even though they were hard stuck Gold. How does this affect where we are? This Season: The issues from the rapid influx of "Master" players from last season are MAGNIFIED by the rebalanced "Personal Rank Adjustment". In the past, PRA had only been a small bonus at the end of each game based on your internal MMR. This would be an additional +5 to +10 points (or -5 to -10) to push you in the direction you needed to go. Now, PRA can be anywhere from +35 to +40 points in your favor EVERY game. EXAMPLE: Cojo wins a game: +240 Cojo loses a game: -160 THIS change is what allows the influx of players into Master to stay there permanently. You don't have to maintain a positive WR to keep afloat, because you are given 30 or 40 points as a gift for each game. This makes it frustrating on ladder to look around and see other GM/Master players. I can't play the game as much I want to, but I maintain a 55% WR. But to my left and right are players that have a 46% WR and yet ALSO have 4K points solely based on the # of games they've played this season. This in combination with players being given Master makes it really difficult to be excited to play quality HL matches. Conclusion: The only way to measure a players performance is how many games they win compared to how many they lose. There shouldn't be Gold-Plat level players floating around Master because PRA is carrying their points. These factors combined are what discourages me from wanting to play HL. 1) Incorrectly placed players in Masters 2) PRA inflating points and therefore making it nigh impossible to derank What do you guys think would resolve this issue?
