What games got the endgame right?

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 10:30 PM PDT

This is kind of a broad question with elements that are going to be purely subjective, but with all the games getting slammed for lack of end-game content (Sea of Thieves, Destiny come to mind) what games nailed the end-game?

What do you expect from an end-game? What makes it engaging or fun after completing the story/leveling up?

My exposure to MMOs is limited, and really only tried the MMO-lites like Destiny, and I'm working on Monster Hunter: World with a friend. I never tried WoW, and can't quite take the temperature on whether people are 100% satisfied or not (a steady player count a decade on is a good sign though).

(This is a thought that's on everyone's mind, so I did a couple of searches, but didn't find a similar thread)

What happened to the Left 4 Dead Series?

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:55 PM PDT

I understand Valve and making fans wait for HL3 and P3. But what happened with the L4D series?

As a huge fan of the series, the franchise has fell off the map in terms of anything officially new.

The series was massive with a sequel to the original being pushed out like a year or two after the original, a handful of DLC camapigns over a few years(Crash Course/The Passing/The Sacrifice/Cold Stream) and since it's been ghost.

Has there ever been an official update as to what happened? Surely it's a big enough name that a third would push huge numbers. It's still a pretty popular online game from what I've heard,I'd imagine even more so on PC with custom maps and mods.

Are they done with it? Was it supposed to be a one off game and we're lucky we even got 2?

I recently replayed 1 on XB1 BC and just wondered what the hell happened. Throughout my high school years and more it was a really popular title and I haven't heard anything officially new about it.

Just seems odd to me that they pushed out 2 stellar games in 2 years and it's gone.

Any thoughts?

Skyrim VR is now available on PC (Oculus Rift / HTC Vive / Windows MR)

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 06:56 PM PDT

After ~6 months of PSVR exclusivity, Skyrim VR is now available for all the PC VR systems via Steam.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/611670/The_Elder_Scrolls_V_Skyrim_VR/

It doesn't feel quite like a made-for-VR game, but this is normal for a pancake --> VR port.

Reviews so far are positive though!

Also it's at #2 on the top sellers on Steam.

What Pumpkin Studios (makers of Hiveswap, the Homestuck spinoff adventure game) has seemingly dissolved. (x-post from /r/Homestuck)

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 07:24 PM PDT

Accoring to the Hiveswap website and various sources around social media, most of the Hiveswap staff has seemingly been let go from What Pumpkin Studios and are seeking new employment. While there hasn't been any news about the game since the wrap-up of the weekly "Troll Call" that was running, this seems to be either a sign of trouble for the games, or a sign of a shakeup from the new producers of Homestuck related properties, Viz Media.

On the same day several members of What Pumpkin Studios announced their departure, a newly updated Homestuck.com launched, relocating the entirety of mspaintadventures.com's content to this site, indicating that Viz Media may be taking a more heavy handed approach in the IP's future production and releases.

(This probably counts as a rumor since it's based off conjecture from various social media posts and the content of the Hiveswap website, so it likely should be tagged accordingly. Thanks mods!)

Statistics for Steam games released between 2018/03/12 to 2018/03/18

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 11:51 PM PDT

Hey there!

Here's this week's infographic covering the Steam releases between the 12th and 18th of March this year: https://i.imgur.com/5PjQ75o.png

Surviving Mars came out on top this week although there wasn't a lot of competition for it to deal with. It's not reviewing particularly well with around 67% of the total reviews being positive but that hasn't stopped it from retaining most (~2/3rds) of its playerbase 2 weeks on. Strangely there are a few countries that really seem to enjoy it, like Denmark (85%) and Poland (90%) although there doesn't appear to be much of a pattern there. The average playtime over the past 2 weeks is just starting to dip off now so we'll likely know the game's true longevity over the coming weeks.

Not too much else to mention this week, pretty much stock standard stuff for the rest of the top 5 in both sections.

If you did play any of the top 5 I'd love to hear your thoughts. Always happy to hear feedback on the infographic to as I've got a lot of data I can incorporate here, I'm just not sure how! :)

What do people think about remasters now that they've been around a few years?

Posted: 02 Apr 2018 05:33 PM PDT

In the early years of this console generation there was a lot of talk and criticism around the quantity of remasters being released, their cost and necessity. I'm wondering what people think of remasters these days now that many have been released and some are old enough to be played for fairly cheap. Which remasters were good and worth it for you? Which were bad?

I started wondering about this after beginning a playthrough of GOW3 Remastered to get hyped for GOW4, I dug up some old threads to see what people thought of the game back when it released and there was quite a lot of criticism about how GOW3 didn't need to be remastered and it was a cash grab. I picked it up in a PSN sale for around $5 last year and I'm very impressed with it so far. It's substantially better than I remember it being on PS3. I've generally found a lot of enjoyment and value in the PS3->PS4 remasters I've picked up on sale in the past year.

What has your experience with remasters been like?
