How to profit from brain dead prisoners

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 02:34 AM PDT

I used to have a prisoner who, together with three others, tried to escape. During the escape he got a bad wound by an ikwa in his brain, so i patched him up. After a few days i noticed that he was still in his bed and hadnt moved. So i checked his body stats and the result was that he was practically brain dead. A living potato. At first i just wanted to sell his organs, kill him and be done with it. The usual procedure. But then i thought „wait a minute- this is the perfect training subject for my doctors! He cant complain, cant run away and best of it: cant fight back!" So the next morning my dayshift doctor would remove his eyeballs, one kidney, one lung and everything else that he didnt need to survive. Once the nightshift doctor came in, he operated everything back where it belonged. This repeated day after day, quadrum after quadrum. Each day my doctors gained several thousand medicine exp. As a bonus: my prison cells have 4 beds each and the other three would-be-escapees used the other three beds. So every day those guys had to watch their friend get harvested and then put back together.

So long story short: dont just kill useless prisoners - find ways to make them usefull.

The Gothenburg Gaming Survey

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:51 AM PDT

Dear r/RimWorld,

My name is Theo Toresson and I am a student of Science in Psychology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden - currently writing my master's thesis. The survey aims to gain understanding of the different aspects of gaming that affects psychological well-being. The moderators of your subreddit have been kind enough to let me post here in your sub. The survey will take about 10 minutes to complete. At the moment of writing, the survey has around 5000 replies, but I am lacking your community. I hope that as many of you (from the Rim World-community) as possible want to help me by doing this survey, because in order to make something out of this I hope to get data from a broad variety of gamers. That means that even if you have a different game that you currently play more, I am interested in you anyway. Also, you should feel free to post this survey anywhere there might be gamers - to friends or on forums, twitch, twitter facebook etc. So if you have a few minutes to spare in between games, use it for this survey - it's for (actual) science. Thank you for your time!

All the best, Theo Toresson, Master of Science in Psychology at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

FAQ:

I have received a few questions and comments on the survey. I can't change anything in the survey due to the fact that it would corrupt the data. Please refer to the FAQ below should any confusion occur during or after the survey.

I live in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, Faroe Islands or United Kingdom – where is my country?

The list is lacking a few countries. You can choose any country on the list as long as you make sure to specify the correct country in the very last question of the survey. If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, please select Great Britain.

What kind of device is Nintendo Switch? And what if I play my most played game on both console and computer?

Choose the way you play the game the most. Switch can count as either portable device or console, answer according to your most frequent type of usage.

You ask for streaming, but what about Youtube and other sites for non-streaming video content related to gaming?

Use the "other"-alternative on the question about gaming related activities and fill in your preferred alternative in the corresponding box. For the content to count as "streaming" in the other questions of the survey however it has to be live (e.g. live on Twitch, Mixer or Youtube LIVE).

Some genres are unrepresented, for example fighting games, what can I do?

Use the "other"-alternative and fill in your favorite genre in the corresponding box if it's missing.

You ask for money spent on games each week, but I only buy one game each month, is my spending 0?

No. Calculate your weekly expenditure by dividing your monthly by four, for example.

How can you know that my mental and physical health is related in any way to my gaming?

I can't. Your hand injury might be because of an accident you had yesterday. You should still fill in the box, because even if I can't see the underlying causes of your health (as an individual), I can analyze it on a group level and look for patterns among thousands of replies. If there is no connection between a particular way of gaming and a particular mental or physical state, I won't find any connection. There is no need to worry that you're messing up the data! So try to be as honest as possible in the survey, even if you know that your state is not related to your gaming.

The questions in the end seem focused on the negative side of gaming. What is your motive?

I am a gamer myself, and have been for all my life. I have had several amazing experiences with games, and also a few bad ones. Gaming has many positive effects, there is research to support that. For a minority of people, gaming can have negative effects (just like alcohol, work, sex, candy, exercise, therapy, TV, horseback riding or really anything that can be enjoyable). This particular study is done to explore correlations (not causality) between different kinds of gaming, social and mental health problems (I myself work as a therapist, therefore my focus). Neither I (the author) nor the institution is biased towards gaming in general in an either positive or negative way.

Will I get to see the results?

Yes. The thesis will be in Swedish, but I will post a summary of the results in all subreddits that have been participating in the study, most likely sometime in June 2018.

What is your favorite game?

No one has actually asked me this, but for the record it's Super Smash Bros. Melee!

I have more questions!

Feel free to send an email to gustoreth@student.gu.se and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Animals should haul according to their strength.

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 11:13 AM PDT

It just seems funny to me that a little boar can haul as much as a Muffalo, or Thrumbo, or Elephant. I think it'd make more sense to have the big animals slightly slower, but being able to carry 2 or even 3 stacks(for thrumbo/elephant).

This would make the big animals, with huge appetites(and huge ability to get hit by bullets, because they're so big) a little more doable. Right now, the big animals are FUN to have, but it's hard to argue they're more useful, or profitable than smaller animals... if only because Big Animals have such big appetites, and hitboxes(and generally slower reproduction rates as well).

Rimworld tip of the day #1: Magic Feet!

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:05 AM PDT

If you have harvest everything installed, you can cut off a prisoner's foot, then their leg, you can install the leg on someone else that happens to need a leg and the leg will magically grow a foot. Magic feet!

How do I get started with capital FUN?

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 11:20 PM PDT

Hey there, Rimworld! I'm pretty new to the game and I've played like a pussy.

On my first playthrough I set the game to "some challenge" Phoebe and I'd reload saves anytime soemthing happened that I didn't like or when a colonist died. After everyone got outfitted in full power armor and charge rifles, it got boring.

I'm looking to have a more dangerous playthrough that'll have me in for the real fun this game has, now that I'm familiar with the game.

Any tips, challenges, mod recommendations?

I just wanna share my most FeelsBadMan drama in the game.

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 10:05 PM PDT

Ivo, a digger, decided to propose to his long time girlfriend Saio, a tender, who he courted for whole year! Fucking 4 quadrums.

This man was smitten! Maybe it was because she was a nudist and liked it kinky or whatever but unfortunately, Saio said no. I thought, "Oh right, I don't have a marriage spot!". I mean come on, Spots are not really the first thing that comes to mind in a survival situation. So, I put a trading spot, a party spot and a marriage spot. Spots checked.

A little later, after a the debuff on the rejection was over. My digger tried again with similar results. I was thinking maybe it ain't time yet, maybe she ain't ready. So again, gotta cope with the debuff with some Cigarrillos and Spectago Tea(man's classy).

A little while Ivo still won't give up and he did it again BEFORE the debuff was over. I was like hol' up brother relax. And again got rejected. And I'm here thinking of how to deal with a -35 for 7 days on him.

Then thank the rimgods, a party happened on that SAME DAY. Well, thank god for me because he can still work well in neutral. But man, that party must have been awkward.

I read the character page on Saio to see what was going on. I was saw that she was incapable of Social. Maybe that was it. Maybe social incapables cant marry. I googled and wiki'd but to no luck.

Then a week later after the -35 became a -18 for Ivo, the earlier rejection debuff expired only leaving the later one, they broke up. A notif popped up saying rejection and relationship over. I kicked Saio out of the Ivo's room(originally his) then went about repairing from the latest raid.

Not until later did I read the notifs again that . IT WAS IVO THAT REJECTED SAIO.

DAMN. The boy had enough or something. I was like... Fuck, where did all the love go...

TL;DR.

Digger proposed to tender. Tender Rejected thrice. The third time, a party happened after the rejection ON THE SAME DAY. The fourth time Tender tried to propose but Digger rejected. Both have now rejected debuffs.

Mods that add to vanilla gameplay?

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 01:39 AM PDT

I see mods being used in playthroughs all the time in this subreddit but rarely any discussion about them. I'm hoping that isn't because a post like this is against the rules.

Title might sound redundant, but what I'm looking for is mods that enhance the vanilla experience, with a focus on not straying too far in terms of balance and/or theme. Feel free to recommend any mods that don't meet the criteria if you feel strongly about them. Early-game additions, mid, late, or just tweaks/fixes and QoL would all be appreciated.
