Round of 64 Caster Update

We are thrilled to bring Jaycie 'Gillyweed' Gluck back to the casting desk for this year's elimination phase. Gilly has been one of the faces of Heroes Esports since the technical alpha. The Kansas native got her start in StarCraft after attending the second Lone Star Clash LAN event at the University of Texas in Austin—a city Gillyweed has called home for most of her adult life. While it was tough to break through in a scene as established as competitive StarCraft, Gillyweed found her true calling in Heroes of the Storm, where she began a podcast called "Eye on the Storm" with her cohost Anna Prosser Robinson. She began her casting career providing commentary for the Heroes Hype Amateur Series in 2015. Since then, she's cast a multitude of Heroes events, and is thrilled to be coming back to Heroes of the Dorm!

Chromie is kind of oppressive I think

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 03:39 PM PDT

Every game with Chromie is like playing dodgeball and she does so much damage on such a short cool down. If you don't draft Anub or some dive assassin, it's gg. Even if you draft Anub, if she's behind 2 warriors it's just an uphill struggle and it feels like you are doing WAY too much work.

She has a tonne of CC, a tonne of escape and extremely low cooldowns with that stupid Bronze Talons talent. I really feel that there something off about her design. I remember reading a dev comment that she was given so much damage and so much range due to blowup/dive comps being prevalent or something? Does that still stand?

I don't think it's right that she be allowed to keep firing shots off like that off screen..

Thoughts?

Voice chat, and the humanizing of players

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 02:16 PM PDT

Somewhat of a confession thread, but also an interesting observation thread. TL;DR: use voice chat if you're tired of shitty people, talking is more humanizing than typing.

I had a game last night, it went poorly and we got crushed. Nobody was in voice chat, and at one point someone types "well, we kind of need to be dying less." Another person chimed in with "yeah no kidding" and to that person I said "you have 8 deaths, I'm pretty sure he's talking to you my friend." The immediate reply was "we're not friends" to which I replied "then I'm cancelling the fruit basket."

This guy and I proceeded to troll each other for the rest of the match. We lost, and both left generally thinking the other was an asshat.

Next game starts, I don't even remember the guys name. I jump into voice comms and about halfway through the draft I hear "hey... I want my fruit basket." "Oh man, was that you?" "Yeah"

I apologize, tell him I had a long day at work. He apologizes, said he had a bad game and reached poorly to the initial comment. We have a great game, whole team plays well, we win. 10/10, would group again. This was an interesting lesson on talking to people vs typing to them, and the realization that everyone else on your team really is another person.

Season 2, 2018 - complitely flawed at masters?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 02:31 PM PDT

I have played HotS since preseason and achieved grandmaster rank every season on EU. And from what I've experienced, I think that this season, master rank has by far the lowest quality games. I know it is a bit too early to say this, but there are a few points that I would like to discuss here that were not happening before:

  • Many decent/pro players that I know have negative winrate after more than 60 games, including myself (47%); yet, thanks to the PRA (personal rank adjustment) system, we're still able to climb (I'm sitting at 6k master points at the moment). Is it normal that these players have such negative winrate after so many games? I don't think so. They have never experienced this before and neither I have. There is something fishy here already.

  • Everyone is having extremely high PRA even if their MMR is not that high. People who were no higher than master 1k at any season are still getting +30 PRA per game. This means that it doesn't matter if they lose more games than they win, because they're still going to climb; as a consequence, many of these are getting grandmaster rank for the first time (but not because they are much better than 3 weeks ago).

  • Due to PRA changes, grandmaster rank has become a title that one has to grind, instead of earn. The more games one plays, the higher they will be, even if they have 50% winrate or slightly lower. While in other seasons one had to try their best to achieve grandmaster rank and win more games than they lost, in this one all one has to do is play games. Skill is no longer valuable; time spent playing HL is the new way to climb.

  • Grandmaster #200 is at >6k master points after 2 weeks. To put that into perspective: #200 GM the last week of every season has always been somewhere between 4.5k to 5.5k. Snitch from team Dignitas is right now at 16k master points and +0 PRA. What is #1 GM going to be this season? Master 25k? This looks like a grinding game to me at this point.

I love this game and I really want it to get better, but the direction at which ranked is heading is definitely not correct. Here are a few changes that this game needs desperately in my opinion:

  • Less seasons per year. We don't need 3-4 seasons per year. This way, the matchmaker just keeps working with a low amount of inaccurate data to create games (which is the reason why we see so many games being stomps early in the new seasons). The reason why Blizzard wants these many amount of seasons is clear: they want players to keep returning to the game and keep playing. While I think this is also a good tool to do so, I also think this game now needs quality of life changes. 1-2 seasons per year (2 ideally) would make it so much easier for people to play longer at the rank they deserve to be at, learn from their mistakes and get better, instead of grinding the rank where they were already. This is one of the reasons why the average HotS player has so little knowledge about the game.

  • Show MMR for master/GM rank. Once a person reaches master rank, they should be able to check their MMR, and from that point the only way to work their way up in the ladder would be increasing their MMR. There are huge issues with rank-MMR discrepancy in master/GM rank and it is getting even larger with each season. A player who is at master 3k should not be banning over a player who is 5k points above him, which apparently has become the norm (and not only in season 2, 2018). This also means that even if two players have the same exact master points, one will find it easier to climb than the other just for the fact that his MMR is lower. Clearly, the system is punishing players with higher MMR after every season reset.

TL;DR: ranked is very inaccurate as there are too many seasons; ranked has become a grinding place; huge discrepancy in MMR-rank; possible solutions: less seasons, show MMR at master/GM, which now becomes the new "ranked points" for master/GM.

with the release of fenix we will have 5 protoss ( 6 if we count probius), everyone of them has its own announcer with their particolar personallity, expect artanis, wich don't have his own announcer. as leader of the protoss i'd love to have his voice over when i play other protoss too, like we're in a mission and trough the khala he can contact us

Owlbuddy's Grandmaster Guide on Rexxar

Hey everyone, I'm back with another guide! This time I've decided to do one of my favorite and most played heroes, Rexxar. I think he has a ton of potential and with his latest appearance in HGC (albeit a loss), I figured now was as good a time as any to give my thoughts on being a successful Rexxar player.

HotS 1st World Problems

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 07:31 AM PDT

I've been meaning to post this in a while but I never seemed to do so. Thought we would have some fun. Here are mine:

  • Can't find a nice mount that goes well with your favorite skin for that #skinergy goodness.

  • Spend a lot of time working on our #skinergy for Zeratul/Nova/Samuro/Tyrande/Valeera to then spend most of the match unmounted/stealthed so you can't see it.

  • Blizzard releases a new awesome tint for a skin that already had an awesome corresponding mount, but doesn't release a new tint for said mount.

  • Abilities/summons don't match the tints that are not the main one.

  • Start playing HotS because it's awesome that you get to play with all your favorite heroes from other games, some of which are not even playable in those games, to then use a skin that makes that hero look nothing like itself making the whole experience kinda pointless.

What are yours?

EDIT: - Having an awesome spray that matches your skin, but it's the wrong tint.

  • Not having a spray/banner that can match specifically with a hero.

What if Blizzard offered mixed-hero gem-only bundles, or alternatively, lets us "Build-A-Bundle"

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 08:59 AM PDT

I've seen lots of comments from people on this sub in regards to how they want to purchase one or two of the gem-only tints for a given hero, but don't want to pay the full amount for the bundle because they will never use all the tints.

I'm one of those players that disagrees with Blizzard's mentality when it comes to gem only skins, and paying for model vs. paying for the tint. I think the argument can be made that a digital landscape and micro-transactions provide a platform to offer things like individual tints for $X.00, and that is where the value comes from. Once the product is made, you can sell as many copies as you want without incurring more development costs. They've invested in creating the model and the tints, and not offering the tints individually is, imho, only taking away from potentially sales, not herding the fence-riders into buying a full bundle.

Mixed-hero Bundles

I think it would be great if Blizzard offered a mix-hero bundle along-side the featured weekly bundles for the gem-only skins. They could randomly select a tint from each of the gem-only skins, or package them based on color themes (red/black, purple, etc.)

Build-A-Bundle

Alternatively, I think it would be awesome if we could create our own bundles of 3 or 5 tints, selecting whichever ones we want. We would still pay aprooximately the same amount of gems for the existing bundles, but as a player, I feel like I would get a lot more value for my money being able to get a tint for Hanzo, a tint for Maiev, Alex, etc. and I'd be more likely to purchase a "full" bundle as opposed to holding out until they offer tints individually.

What do you guys think? Is this something you would like to see?

I think blizzard needs to do what they did with Garrosh to Maeiv.

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 08:36 AM PDT

Her numbers will have to be so undertuned she's borderline useless with her current kit. Even with this last round of nerfs she still feels oppressive to play against with a competent maeiv. The reset just needs to be gone.

/endrant

edit: I think the reset on FoK is the easiest thing to change for Maeiv outside of sweeping changes and is why i suggested it.

I will say I think a better solution would be for when Maeiv uses her passive it breaks the binding. This way you opens up real avenues of counter play gives her risk of going in etc. This could potentially let her have her armor and or her health back she lost in earlier rounds of nerfs.

Since we will get more frequent reworks than hero releases, which would you like the devs to focus on first?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 06:22 PM PDT

Now that the HotS team has let us know that their priorities are shifting a bit from hero releases every 3-4 weeks to a bit longer (seems to be in the 4-7 week range) to reworks and ensuring that the (majority) of the cast is viable and balanced, which heroes do you hope they get to sooner rather than later? I thought it would be fun for us to list our top reworks we would like to see and to classify them in a couple different ways - Extreme Rework: The hero needs to be completely overhauled, almost to the point that they don't work at all any longer and need some substantial changes. We haven't seen Blizzard ever do this but i know other MOBA's have done this before. This would involve giving the hero completely different abilities/trait. reworks most if not all of the talents. Seems unlikely that the HotS team would ever do this for this game but I would like to see some people's suggestions and ideas. - Major Rework: This would substantial updates to talents and possibly even a new ability or a rework of an ability or two to function differently and better synergize with the heroes current kit. Could also include completely overhauling a trait as well as talent tree. Some examples we have seen are Sylvanas getting a new heroic, Garrosh Q ability functioning differently, abilities having built in questing challenges, etc. - Minor Rework: These are what we more commonly see, it can involved reworking a talent tree, tweaking numbers, adding questing challenges to talents/abilities.

Also, perhaps you could list reasonings as well such as: This hero doesn't work anymore with the current power creep; I would like to see this hero be viable in high level HotS (HGC/Amatuer scene); this hero doesn't live up to their fantasy/lore.

I'll add my own but wanted to post this and start seeing some of your ideas. Who knows, maybe the devs can find some good ideas in here.

TL ranks should be team-bound not player-bound

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 12:54 AM PDT

I only play TL with the same team of 5 friends.
Our ranks are mixed from gold to diamond.

The problem is: The way the ranking system works, we 5 players are all kept in the same distance to each other rank-wise. For all 5 players a single match is weighted the same, though for our diamond player the opoonents were lower than his rank, while for our gold player the oponents were higher than his rank.
So never we will be even in ranks, though we exclusively play as 5 together and this is only based on initial ranking. It feels like the lower rank players are feeding the higher rank players to hold their ranks with easier oponents, while the lower rank players have to fight higher rank players to confirm their lower ranks, which makes no sense. Actually the higher ranks should get less points and the lower ranks should get more points to even out eventually.
If the gold player wants to increase his rank relatively to the others he has to play in another team and win more and this just does not make sense for TL.

So imho ranks should be team-bound, maybe coming along with something like a clan system!
(another possibility could be: counting in a factor into personal rank adjustment that considers the player's individual rank compared to the oponent's team middle rank)

Samuro: Kawarimi idea

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 11:35 AM PDT

Hi HotSers!

TL;DR

I used to love [[Kawarimi]] before Samuro's rework, now I rarely take it. Would it compete in value if the clone it created was had Windwalk on spawn?

Background

Before the stealth changes, Samuro used to get 1 second of complete invisibility when using Windwalk. This was expandable to 2.5 seconds with the Way of the Wind quest reward. When stealth and Samuro were both reworked he lost any true invisibility. Kawarimi used to create an undetectable clone that would do whatever Samuro was doing, allowing him to reposition. With the stealth being rather discernible, Kawarimi creates a visible clone and a stealthed Samuro that has none of the slyness of the original talent. If the clone that was created also had stealth from Windwalk then it would actually be a misdirection and be consistent with the goal of his "three card gambit" design.

How many skin-related alternate universes do we have by now?

Posted: 26 Mar 2018 02:00 PM PDT

Apart from parallel ones, that justify skins like high templar Zeratul and archangel Diablo. Some I found by looking through some skin descriptions.

  • There's that one with futuristic superheroes and supervillains. All the mechs probably belong there too. Guess if Blizz take their time to make some movies on this one, they'll leave Marvel and DC out of business :)

  • There's the wild west one with Sherif Valla in it. There's also a Mad Max themed one with Immortan Garrosh. Could be the same world btw.

  • There's the pirate-themed one, including Cassia, Stukov and Falstad skins.

  • There's the vampire related one, with Kerrigan, Arthas and Nazeebo. Maybe it includes all Halloween skins.

Is there any more of them?
