Heroes of the Storm Balance Patch Notes. March 21 - 2018

Ice Block for BW, Malf, and Naz should be character specific themed.

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 02:11 PM PDT

Ice Block for the current characters that have it only makes sense for Jaina. For the remaining 3, wouldn't it make more sense and be more in line with their philosophy of getting rid of generic talents to replace the ability thematically? Wouldn't it be cool if Malf turned into a tree? I don't really know what would be on theme for Naz or Brightwing but people who know more about the lore would have ideas I'm sure. It's always a little jarring seeing a Druid decide to freeze himself to protect him. Really breaks my immersion. What do you guys think would be appropriate block forms?

Soooo I ran into a voice actor last night...

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 06:49 AM PDT

As the title suggests. I was playing UR with my other three buds and our rando was a voice actor...We had just played a match and our last random had an extremely weird voice that my lady was kinda complaining about so when we joined the next match she said if the random has an awkward voice, she was bouncing out of team chat. I hop over to team before her and the dude says whats up? I told him "oh sweet you seem to sound normal so my g/f won't freak out". as soon as she joined in he made some REALLY weird noises instantly and she exclaims "nope! i'm out!" and then hops back in party but I start laughing my bum off. I explained the situation to him and he said it's cool, he did the weird noise cause he used to be a "voice actor for dragon ball Z" I was like, "yeah, okay fam...whatever you say..." He insisted on it so I asked him what character and he said he actually played Guldo of the ginyu force and was also on other funimation shows like YuYu Hokusho. At this point my lady comes back and i'm still basically calling this guy full of shit so he insisted his name was Bill Townsley. I looked him up and I was starting to get intrigued so as we are talking about chris sabet and sean schimel, just playing along, I ask him to do the guldo voice. Now he started to do it but we dropped from the game cause someone on other side didn't pick but it sounded REALLLLLY close...so I investigated. I found who I thought may be him on fb but the dude worked at capital one now. I looked up the same profile on linkeddin and SURE ENOUGH I was totally convinced it was the same guy. I sent him a message on FB: "lol....Guldo?" and he responded back with "Hey you found me! we got dropped in that match!!" I was star struck as I am a huge DBZ fan and legit just randomly ran into a VA for one of my fave shows ON one of my fave games ever. we talked a little more and now we are gunna play some games lol, Just wanted to share this small world experience.

TL,DR: I met Bill Townsley, voice actor for Guldo in Dragonball Z, on heroes of the storm! hahahaha

New Hero Woes: It kind of sucks when the only other skins for new heroes are gem-only.

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 06:40 AM PDT

I'm currently sitting on my level 10 Maiev loot box because there is nothing interesting to unlock.

I haven't been on the PTR to see if Fenix's other skin is gem-only, but both Blaze and Maiev have been released with their base skin and a gem-only skin.

I think Blizz set the right example with Alexandra's T H I C C ' s release by having a 'master' skin variation that is similar to her base skin and the gem-only skins.

I'm not a huge fan of gem-only skins, but whatever -- I can see their place in the game, but I would love to see an alt skin released alongside new heroes that isn't gem-only.

edit: fucked up alex's name

College Esports 'Heroes Of The Dorm' $1M Bracket Contest, Mount Announced

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 10:10 AM PDT

HGC ANZ will be played in 12 hours on the new patch.

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 01:42 PM PDT

Is there a reason everything on the PTR isn’t unlocked?

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 05:57 AM PDT

It seems very silly to me that everything isn't unlocked on the PTR. Why wouldn't you want people play testing all the new/changed heroes, mounts, sprays, etc? I think more people would play test if everything was unlocked and it could be a place a new player could try out existing heroes that they don't own that aren't free rotation on live. What do y'all think?

Fenix – Abilities, Quotes, and Skins Lore

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 10:32 AM PDT

Hey folks!

Back again with another follow up to Fenix's release. We started with his lore last week, and now we'll go into the references hidden in his quotes, abilities, talents and interactions. Fenix is a classic character from SC1, and Blizzard went all out with the throwbacks, so there's a lot to dig into. So let's dig in!

Lore of Fenix thread

All previous Lore Of episodes

Abilities

Some notes on Fenix's design: Fenix's walk, where he never changes the way his legs face, is a reference to how dragoons walk in the StarCraft series, maintaining their facing no matter what direction they are sent in. Fenix's death animation, crumpling into a puddle of blue life support liquid, is also how dragoons died in StarCraft 1. Fenix's portrait is also that of the wounded warrior inside the armor, his unit portrait in StarCraft 1, and during the Brood War campaign this was the portrait used for all protoss structures.

Also because it's come up in so many threads, Fenix's eyes are blue due to a design decision between SC1 and SC2 to make all Khalai have blue eyes and all Nerazim have green eyes, even though he had orange eyes in SC1. His orange eyes were retained for StarCraft Remastered to maintain the feel of the original games, but was changed in Heroes to match the new lore.

  • D: Shield Capacitor – In StarCraft, all protoss units are equipped with plasma shields to protect them from damage as well as hostile environments. To generate this shield they're outfitted with a device named a shield capacitor. In gameplay this doubles as a second health bar that slowly regenerates over time. Fenix's shield capacitor functions similar to StarCraft II protoss shields, where they regenerate quickly if out of combat (albeit not that quick). The shield bar being above the regular health bar is also how shields are displayed in StarCraft. Interestingly this is the second time Shield Capacitor has been used as part of Heroes, as Probius has it as one of his talents.

  • Q: Plasma Cutter – Much protoss weaponry is laser and plasma based, however this attack appears to be a completely original creation for Fenix's kit in Heroes.

  • W1: Repeater Cannon – Repeater Cannon operates and sounds sort of similar to the Particle Disruptors used by protoss stalkers (albeit with one laser per shot instead of two). Stalkers were the Nerazim replacement for dragoons after the shrines that developed their life support system was lost during the fall of Aiur.

  • W2: Phase Bomb – The standard armament of dragoons are phase disruptors, which operate similar to phase bomb in that they're balls of blue energy, albeit without the AOE effect. Phase disurptors fire bolts of antimatter filtered through a psionic field, allowing it to blast through even heavily armored targets. The sound effect of the Phase Bomb is the dragoon firing sound effect from both StarCrafts.

  • E: Warp – Protoss utilize warp for many of their ships and soldiers. When protoss warriors take near fatal damage, they are warped back to their home position (something Fenix was unable to do due to his suit failure). This is likely also a reference to the dragoon's replacement in StarCraft II, the stalker, which has the ability to use blink short distances.

  • R1: Purification Salvo – Purification is the process protoss use to cleanse a planet of all hostile life, usually zerg, by liquefying its crust. This may also be a reference to the robotic Purifiers, AI machines made from the personalities of protoss heroes, which would be led by a Fenix AI copy that would later take the name Talandar.

  • R2: Planet Cracker – Planet cracker is a weapon outfitted on protoss motherships (and likely some carriers) with the ability to purify a large portion the planet below them. It's hinted, but never confirmed, that these are the cannons the protoss use to purify entire worlds. This was an ability introduced to the mothership in multiplayer in the alpha of Wings of Liberty, but was later removed. It would reappear on the special type of mothership named the Purifier (nothing to do with the AI warriors, I know it's confusing, "Purifier" describes a lot of protoss things), first to purify the terran colony of Haven (which Raynor put a stop to) and second during Artanis's invasion of Aiur at the beginning of Legacy of the Void. The beam itself was designed after the massive protoss beam used in the StarCraft 1 intro cinematic.

  • Default Mount: Gravitic Thruster – Gravitic Thrusters were an upgrade in StarCraft 1 for the scout from the Fleet Beacon, combining anti-gravity and repulsor technology with micro-thrusters to improve the top speed of scout fighters. In game it increased their movement speed, but they came so late in the game that it was an upgrade rarely worth getting.

Talents
  • Warp Conduit (Level 4) – Warp conduits are massive gateways use by the protoss to warp large ships and massive fleets over long distances. They can be used to evacuate ships as was the case on Kaldir and Shakuras, or help redeploy an air fleet as was seen in the introduction mission of Legacy of the Void.

  • Adanium Shell (Level 13) – Adanium was a material used to create the robotic combat shell of Talandar, the AI construct based off of Fenix's memories.

  • Photonic Weaponry (Level 16) – Many protoss weapons are photon based, including the photon cannon. Both dragoons and photon cannons have the same projectile animation and sound effects in StarCraft 1.

  • Arsenal Overcharge (Level 16) – Arsenal Overcharge is an ability given to Talandar (labeled as Fenix) in Co-op Missions in his Solarite Dragoon form. This ability allows Talandar to use all of his abilities with no cooldown.

  • Singularity Charge (Level 20) – Singularity Charge was an upgrade for dragoons in StarCraft 1 (and for Artanis's dragoon's in SC2 Co-op Missions) that increased the attack range of dragoons, researchable from the cybernetics core (twilight council in SC2). In lore, it used technology that restructured antiparticle amplitudes to enhance the dragoon's phase disruptor.

  • Unconquered Spirit (Level 20) – After Tassadar expressed remorse that Fenix was mortally wounded and put in a dragoon, "Nonsense! There is no shame in defeat, so long as the spirit is unconquered!"

Poke quotes

"Executor?" / "Your command?" – Fenix's select quotes from StarCraft.

"I fear no enemy, for the Khala is my strength! I fear not death, for our strength is eternal!" – Fenix's poke quotes from StarCraft. The Khala is the mind link all Aiur protoss share, a psionic network of thoughts and memories that formed the fabric of their society. It was however taken over by the xel'naga Amon, and forced to be destroyed in Legacy of the Void. He uses parts of these quotes in a few different interactions and generic quotes, but I'll just note the one here to save space.

"Drop your weapon, you have 15 seconds to comply." – A poke quote from the dragoon in StarCraft and StarCraft II. The quote is a reference to the movie "Robocop," where the line originally came from.

"I am honored have been made into a dragoon, but I wish the phase-smiths would clean my tank once in a while. I think I saw a fish in here!" – This is a reference to the portrait of the immortal (next generation of dragoons) from StarCraft II, where occasionally a goldfish, affectionately named "Herbie" by Dustin Browder, would swim by the encased protoss. Fenix has a similar fish swimming around in his tank you can occasionally see. Phase-smiths are the technology experts of Aiur's Khalai Caste, who develop the machines and robotics, like the dragoons, for the Aiur Protoss.

"For the last time I don't have a graviton beam. You're thinking of a different protoss phoenix." – The Phoenix is a protoss fighter craft introduced in StarCraft II. Its ability was graviton beam, which lifted up any single non-massive ground unit into the air, allowing them to be hit by anti-air fire. As you probably assumed, Fenix sounds like Phoenix.

"Before I fell to the zerg, Judicator Aldaris sent me to Glacius to have my memories preserved. I… May have altered the archives to embellish a few of my accomplishments. I'm sure no one will notice, right?" – Glacius was a protoss research world where the Khalai Caste preserved protoss memories in the hopes of reviving an advanced line of AIs named the Purifiers, designed after protoss heroes, but whose ancient iterations rebelled against the Protoss Empire. In Legacy of the Void, the Purifier that was made from Fenix's memories, Talandar, goes through Fenix's accomplishments in the Daelaam Archives, which were all larger than life heroic events, and all references to action movies like "Black Hawk Down," "Predator" and "Rambo." Even Talandar admitted that "Some of these tales must have been embellished by their authors. It is difficult to believe one zealot could achieve so much." The problem with this quote being Talandar had memories of Fenix falling at Antioch, which puts the memory upload after his downfall, and the archives have him at New Antioch for an adventure referencing "Die Hard With a Vengeance," which Fenix only visits after becoming a dragoon (as it was on the planet Shakuras). Then again, I expect all of this is supposed to be lighthearted (but makes whether to take it seriously on the StarCraft wiki or not miserable).

"Have you seen those new "immortals" with their torsos and dual phase disruptors? Hmph. In my day we had no torso and ONE phase disruptor and we appreciated it!" – After the fall of Aiur to the zerg, the protoss lost the ability to produce the life support systems necessary for dragoons. As such, every single dragoon became an irreplaceable loss. Those dragoons they still had were outfitted with more advanced technology, hardened shields, and dual phase disruptors, and became immortals, in order to help preserve them. These also were given a torso. Phase disruptors are the weapons both dragoons and immortals use, immortals just have two arm cannons of them.

"At the end of my last stand at Antioch I was ambushed by a hydralisk. I could have easily slain the it, but my psi blade… ceased to function, I swear that never happened before!" – During the cinematic Fall of Fenix, Fenix is attacked by a hydralisk, and his suit failed on him, causing his psi blade to spark out. Talandar recalls the event with "I remember being alone. I do not know whether it was the blade or my faith that wavered, but in that moment, the zerg struck." Faith here likely connects to willpower, which psionically powers the psi blade. And yes this is also an erectile dysfunction joke.

"I live, I die, I live again!" – A reference to "Mad Mad: Fury Road," said by Nux. Fenix "died" when he was mortally wounded, then came back as a dragoon. One of the Tal'darim immortals in the Legacy of the Void mission "Steps of the Rite" (named "Immortal J'oh" after the Fury Road antagonist) had that same line.

"Never underestimate the strength of a dragoon. With just a single shield battery, one dragoon can defeat an entire terran army! It's true, look it up." – Shield batteries are protoss defensive structures that recharge the shields of protoss units. Dragoons, which are a staple of Terran vs Protoss in competitive SC1, often use shield batteries to hold off early terran aggression. This is likely a reference to a very famous Light vs Tempest StarCraft 1 game, where one dragoon and a shield battery held against a whole terran army with proper micro.

"This exoskeleton can be extremely difficult to control. Do not judge a dragoon by the path they choose to walk." – Dragoon pathfinding in SC1 is infamously awful due to how the unit is shaped (and the fact its hitbox changed size when it was moving and stationary). Often it would start wandering around going the opposite way the player suggested it go, especially when in large groups or when they had to go up ramps. This has lead to some pretty hilarious bugs regarding dragoons.

"My most recent battle was one to remember, I was having a shield day!" – Shield day sounds similar to field day. Fenix uses protoss plasma shields.

"So, Artanis is a Hierarch now? Most impressive. What's a Hierarch?" – Fenix served with Artanis through the Great War and Brood War, but died before the foundation of the Daelaam, or protoss unity government, which elected Artanis as the head of the government, or Hierarch. Before that the position did not exist.

"There is no need to continue clicking me. That hold position bug was fixed ages ago." – For many years in SC1, dragoons would sometime glitch and refuse to move unless the player hit "hold position" or "stop" three times. This was fixed with Patch 1.18, which in spite of Fenix saying it was released ages ago was released in 2017.

"It breaks my heart to see my fellow zealots suffer on the battlefield. But what if us dragoons went to their rescue? DEU-RA-GUN!" – This was a bit of an obscure one. There's a Korean artist named Kim Seong Mo who released a StarCraft fan comic, who had a propensity to have dramatic closeups. In one one of his comics, an exchange between the protoss goes "It aches my heart to see my fellow Zealots suffer, but it's only the beginning of the battle." "Let's not make any hasty moves." "But what if Dragoons went to the rescue?" "Deu!" "Ra!" "Gun!!" This became a meme in some Korean circles, and its over dramatic closeups was regularly parodied. (credit to u/ljwlpw for guiding me in the right direction on this)

Interaction Quotes

As per usual, only the ones that I have things to comment on I'll post.

(Generic) Fenix: "I am Akhundelar, the tip of the spear!" – Akhundelar is the first wave of a protoss offensive, usually a group that takes high casualties, and in Khalani translates to "tip of the spear." This exact line was said to Artanis by the zealot Kaldalis before the Reclamation of Aiur in Legacy of the Void. Probius was also part of that Akhundelar.

(Generic) Fenix: "My heart longs for an epic battle!" – On Moria, Fenix says the quote "I prefer large scale battles over these more covert missions. My heart longs for the epic struggles of my youth, to go into battle along my protoss brethren again! Ah, but time will tell all things."

(Confused) Fenix: "I do not understand you, which is troubling, since we are communicating psionically." – Protoss do not "speak," rather they implant ideas, thoughts and emotions in a target's head to communicate what they mean. This is how protoss can communicate with any species. This is doubly important for Fenix, who uses advanced technology to psionically see and communicate from outside of his dragoon.

(Gibberish) Fenix: "How glad I am that the Firstborn do not speak through an orifice." – Protoss are abhorred at the concept of a mouth, and think communicating through it is disgusting, as most of protoss senses are psionic. When Grand Preserver Rohana first encountered the terrans during the End War after hundreds of years in stasis, she was appalled that the terrans used orifices to communicate.

(Resolute) Fenix: "I have marched across hundreds of worlds, and I will march across hundreds more." – A reference to a quote Fenix said to Artanis in the mission "First Strike," "You know Executor, although we too have marched across hundreds of worlds together, I never imagined we would be fighting on Aiur. The zerg are indeed worthy foes." May also be a reference to the song "Five Hundred Miles."

Fenix: "So I must fight alongside the Tal'darim? Have I not sacrificed enough already?" Alarak: "It's hard to believe, but I'm starting to prefer that Talandar machine." – The Tal'darim were ancient outcasts of protoss society, who were taken up by the xel'naga who uplifted the protoss race due to their commitment to serving them. While the Protoss Empire knew of the Tal'darim, they considered them heretics that just worshiped the xel'naga to a fanatical degree and left them to their corner of space (the Sigma Quadrant), unaware of the small raids they were doing on the protoss shipping lanes in order to loot their technology. Talandar was the AI replica of Fenix created as a revival of the ancient Purifier Program (as mentioned), and Alarak met him when he allied with Artanis during Legacy of the Void. Talandar and Alarak hated one another, Talandar thinking Alarak was an honorless cur, and Alarak being the one to break to Talandar that he was not actually Fenix, but a robotic copy.

Alarak: "Ugh, a previously slain ally does not inspire confidence, dragoon." Fenix: "Nor does an honorless traitor, Tal'darim." – Unlike the Khalai, who honor their fallen warriors, the Tal'darim look down on those who were mortally wounded in battle as failures. Their Immortal equivalents, named Vanguards, are seen as disgraces who are placed in their suits in order have one last chance to make up for their failures, by causing as much destruction before they die in service to their Highlord.

(To Blaze) Fenix: "If it betters our chances, I will lead the assault myself." – During the Brood War zerg campaign mission "The Kel-Morian Combine," Fenix says this when he allied with Kerrigan against the UED, after she suggests raiding the planet of Moria for minerals for their attack on the United Earth Directorate occupied world of Korhal. Fenix defended the zerg hive clusters from the Kel-Morian forces operating on that world. I have no clue why this and another fairly generic one are specific to Blaze, though Blaze fought alongside Raynor's Raiders, who allied were considered allies and honored friends of the protoss.

Fenix: "Adun be with you, Executor! Let us bring swift death to the enemies of Aiur!" Artanis: "We shall show them the might of the Templar!"– Artanis was the executor and player character during the SC1 Episode III protoss campaign, and this references a conversation he had with Artanis before the mission "Higher Ground:" "Adun be with you, Executor! Bring swift death to the enemies of Aiur!"

Artanis: "Fenix!" Fenix: "Ah, Executor, En Taro Adun, it is good to see you once more upon the field of battle!" – This was Fenix's first quote to Artanis (the player character) during the StarCraft 1 protoss mission "First Strike." Artanis and Fenix were close friends who had, according to Fenix, marched across a hundred worlds together. Artanis is shocked to see Fenix, as he fell in battle during the Brood War, and his reaction is similar to that of when he first reactivated Talandar and discovered he had the memories of his old friend.

(To D.Va) Fenix: "I see you too fight within an armored exoskeleton. …But you can exit yours at any time. (sigh)" – Dragoons function both as an armored shell and life support system for mortally wounded warriors. D.Va has a similar shell with her MEKA, but since it isn't her life support system she can jump out and survive its destruction, unlike Fenix.

D.Va: "No way! Are you from StarCraft? This is so crazy!" Fenix: "StarCraft? No, I am from Aiur!" – StarCraft is the name of the series, but Fenix doesn't know that. Aiur meanwhile is the protoss homeworld.

(To Genji) Fenix: "I sense you have walked a path much like my own, noble warrior." – Genji and Fenix are both warriors who live by a code of honor, who fell in battle, but were revived with cybernetics that kept them alive and allowed them to continue to fight.

(To Kerrigan) Fenix: "The Queen of Blades. When this is over, you and I have much to settle." – Kerrigan convinced Fenix to ally with her against the second zerg Overmind and the invading United Earth Directorate fleet, but when Kerrigan got her broods back she turned on Fenix, butchered his troops and slew him. It is interesting he refers to her as the Queen of Blades though, as before Fenix always referred to her only as "Kerrigan."

(To Kerrigan) Fenix: "I shall go along with this charade for now Kerrigan, but I would be a fool to trust you." – Likely a reference to Heroes Kerrigan being "redeemed" and returned to her human personality. Also a reference to Fenix's quote to Kerrigan upon finding out she had betrayed him in the Brood War zerg mission "True Colors," "This is a betrayal most foul, Kerrigan. We were fools to have gone along with this charade."

(To Raynor) Fenix: "Friend Raynor, once again we fight side by side." – Raynor and Fenix allied together when Tassadar saved Raynor on Char, and the two became close allies during the Brood War, cutting off the zerg flow to the planet Shakuras, then allying with Kerrigan to stop the UED. During all of this the two became quick friends and often bantered.

(To Raynor) Fenix: "Fear not Raynor, I can still, how do you terrans say it, throw down with the best of them." – A reference to a quote Fenix told Raynor during their raid on the planet Moria, "I can still, how do you terrans say it, throw down with the best of them." There's a fun easter egg in the editor file of the map "Dark Origin," where if the player goes through the voice files they can find of Fenix saying "How do you terrans say it, getin' jiggy with it."

(To Samuro) Fenix: "Rarely do I encounter warriors outside the protoss who value honor as I do. This will be a good fight." – Samuro is an blademaster who lives by a samurai code, and much of the Templar's doctrine seems to be inspired by that sort of "live by the sword" mentality.

(To Tassadar) Fenix: "Greetings to you, Tassadar! I am overjoyed to see you in this dark hour." – When Tassadar returned to Aiur during the protoss campaign of SC1, this was the line Fenix used to greet him, while Tassadar expressed shock as he thought Fenix had died at Antioch.

Tassadar: "Praetor Fenix, let us meet our enemy in glorious combat." Fenix: "I shall stand by you until the end." – When Tassadar was declared wanted by the Conclave, Fenix stood beside him and fought his own government, telling him, "And though I damn myself in doing so, I will stand by you until the end." Fenix's rank within the templar was preator, or a battlefield commander.

(To Terran) Fenix: "Hail, terran! We appear to be on the same side. Today." – While Fenix allied with Raynor and his terran forces to help save the sector, he also found against many terran factions in the process, like the fleet of the United Earth Directorate and the mercenary armies of the Kel-Morian Combine (a corporation that took over a nation).

(To Terran) Fenix: "Let us see if your valor can match that of James Raynor." – Raynor helped the protoss defeat the Overmind on Aiur, then aided Fenix in evacuating the protoss to the planet of Shakuras, allying with Fenix through the period of chaos named the Brood War. Raynor was considered to be an ambassador to the terran race from the Daelaam, and an honored hero among the protoss for his bravery.

(To Zeratul) Fenix: "It seems we face a worthy foe, Zeratul! This will be a welcome challenge." / "Greetings Dark Prelate, we fight together once more." – While Fenix initially mistrusted Zeratul, the two allied due to Tassadar bridging the gap between their cultures, and together they broke Tassadar out of the Conclave's prison after they tried to execute him, slew the Overmind. Dark Prelate is Zeratul's Nerazim rank.

(To Zerg) Fenix: "It is difficult to believe I must working alongside my greatest enemy. Fortune has been whimsical of late. " – A reference to a conversation Raynor and Fenix had during the attack on Moria, "It is difficult to believe I must working alongside my greatest enemy in order to save this sector. Fortune has been whimsical of late."

Kill Quotes

Alarak: "Death to the Tal'darim!" – The Tal'darim are Alarak's faction. While they did raid Khalai shipments, and the Khalai knew of them and considered them heretics who too fanatically worshiped the xel'naga, they mostly left the Tal'darim alone on their side of the sector, considering them no threat to the Protoss Empire.

Artanis: "Never did I think this could happen, brother." – Artanis and Fenix were close friends during their training, and both became praetors, or battlefield commanders. Artanis was appalled at Fenix's death, and lead a revenge strike against Kerrigan with the protoss fleet partially due to her betrayal.

Kerrigan: "For vengeance." – Fenix hates the zerg for overrunning the planet of Aiur, mortally wounding him, and forcing the protoss to flee their homeworld, though until Brood War he never actually met Kerrigan, who at the time was a pawn of the Overmind. During the Brood War, Fenix and Raynor allied with Kerrigan in order to stop the renegade broods of Daggoth and the United Earth Directorate's invading fleet. However, after they drove the UED off Korhal, Kerrigan turned on Fenix and killed him. This is also one of the dragoon movement quotes.

Protoss: "Protoss against protoss, Tassadar's worst fear." – Upon Tassadar's return to Aiur with Zeratul, Artanis and Raynor, his government of the Conclave declared him a traitor due to consorting with the Nerazim, exiles from Aiur, and his refusal to purify the terran worlds as they ordered. As they needed the Nerazim to kill the Overmind, Tassadar was forced to fight his comrades and burn the Conclave's main fortress, and Fenix aided him in the conflict. However, the sight of his brethren killing each other was too much for Tassadar to bear, and he surrendered himself to the Conclave in an attempt to stop the fighting.

Raynor: "You are as valorous as any templar, friend Raynor." – Raynor and Fenix, as mentioned, were close friends and allies through the Great War and Brood War, and Fenix respected him as a noble warrior.

Tassadar "At least it was done by my hand, and not the Conclave's." – As mentioned, upon his return to Aiur Tassadar was branded a traitor and was to be put to death by their leaders, the Conclave, but after Tassadar surrendered, Fenix lead the effort to rescue him from a stasis cell along with Artanis and Raynor.

Terran "If only all terrans were as bold as Raynor." – Fenix laments that all terrans don't have Raynor's bravery and combat prowess. While he respects Raynor, he was shocked at the greed of the terrans of the Kel-Morian Combine for still operating while the UED controlled the sector with an iron fist.

Zeratul "You brought honor to the dark templar, my friend." – Zeratul bridged the gap between the Khalai and Nerazim, which ended thousands of years of persecution of the Nerazim, and laid the foundation for the Daelaam, or unified protoss.

Zerg "Another step closer to the zerg's extinction." – Fenix fought in the Great War, attempting to purge Aiur of the zerg. Then in the Brood War, Fenix fought the renegade broods under the cerebrate Daggoth (and later taken by the UED) but was forced to ally with Kerrigan to do so.

Other Quotes

Fenix's StarCraft 1 zealot and dragoon quotes

"What would you ask of me?" / "I hunger for battle." / "As you will." / "For Aiur!" – Quotes from Fenix's unit in StarCraft 1.

"I have returned." / "Galahoslos?" / "Lokh-tai?" – Quotes from the dragoon in StarCraft and StarCraft II.

"My life for Aiur!" / "Honor guide me." / "Thus I serve." – Quotes from the StarCraft zealot.

"Nahda gahla." / "Come, join me in glorious battle!" / "None shall impede me." – Quotes from Talandar (Fenix's AI Purifier copy) in StarCraft II.

"Adun be with you." – Adun was an ancient, venerated protoss hero, who helped guide the Nerazim exiles off of Aiur when he was ordered to put them to death (though the Conclave spun it to say he drove them off). Adun be with you is a common saying of Fenix's people, the Khalai. Fenix also told this to Artanis before the mission "Higher Ground."

"En Taro Adun!" – The common greeting for the Khalai protoss. From Khalani it translated to "In Honor of Adun."

This cold shell has been improved!" – When Fenix first revealed to Tassadar that he survived his fall at Antioch, he told him "I now reside with the cold robotic shell of a dragoon."

"Our phase-smiths never cease to impress." – As mentioned, Phase-smiths are the engineers behind protoss robotics, and they build and maintained the dragoon shells.

"Don't let the fact that I am 360 years older than you dull your impression of me." – Said by Fenix to Raynor when he accused of sounding like a tired old man during Fenix's raid on the planet Moria. The full quote is "Don't let the fact that I am 360 years older than you dull your impression of me, young Raynor. I can still, how do you terrans say it, throw down with the best of them. " At the time of his death Fenix was 398.

"Prepare for arsenal overcharge!" – In Co-op Mission, Talandar (Fenix's AI copy) can use a Solarite Dragoon shell, and has an ability named Arsenal Overcharge, which temporarily gives his abilities no cooldown.

"Behold the power of the Firstborn!" – In Khalani, protoss means "firstborn," as they saw themselves as the first creation of the xel'naga.

"The Khala awaits me." / "I am prepared to meet my destiny." / "You'll not find me easy prey." – Fenix's last words to Kerrigan before she killed him. "The Khala awaits me Kerrigan. And although I am prepared to face my destiny, you'll not find me easy prey."

"Another Fenix? The Purifier Program is faster than I anticipated!" – Fenix was taken to the protoss research facility of Glacius to have his memories preserved in order to help with the burgeoning research on a new Purifier Program, creating AI constructs based off the personalities of honored Templar warriors. This quote is a reference to Talandar, who was a Purifier based off of Fenix's personality, but eventually decided that it needed to form its own path and own identity beyond his base personality.

Skins

Nerazim – The Nerazim were a nomadic faction of protoss who split from the Khalai, as they saw the Khala as an erasure of their identity and severed their nerve cords. As such, the Khalai declared them heretics and drove them off of Aiur, hunting them across the stars. The Archives say Fenix was among those warriors who hunted the Nerazim, but when Tassadar returned to Aiur saying Zeratul was the only one who could kill the Overmind, Fenix went against his own government to keep Zeratul and Tassadar from being executed, eventually helping them kill the Overmind. This skin has greens and more subdued colors, similar to the Nerazim.

Twilight – Twilight is the term used to describe the unity of the Khalai and Nerazim into one government, and their governing body was named the Twilight Council. The color scheme on this is similar to that of the stalker, the Nerazim replacement for the dragoon after the Khalai lost the ability to produce the life support systems for dragoons with the fall of Aiur.

Experimental – This Fenix is designed to look similar to a terran design. The letters on his legs are "G2GF" (which I only know as "got to go fast" ), OG/0331/98 (which is the release date of StarCraft 1, March 31st, 1998, with OG meaning "original gangster.") The low battery on the front may be a reference to how Fenix was first mortally wounded, when his psi blade failed on him, which many community members joked as "the battery ran out." The θ(|V||E|) on his back leg is a function used in Depth-First Searches, part of the pathfinding algorithm used in SC1, because as mentioned, dragoons had infamously awful pathfinding.

Rusted – May be a reference to the "Junker" skinset used in StarCraft II, which are terran mercenaries who utilize scrapped technologies from the wars of the sector, including protoss technology. The crab on the side may be a reference to how dragoons walk like crabs while the skull on the top is similar to the protoss face from the StarCraft boxart.

That's all for Fenix! If there's anything I missed feel free to correct me, but I think I got everything from his kit and quotes. Around the anniversary I'll probably be back to do all of the new StarCraft themed collectibles and announcers they're adding since there's a decent amount of them and Mira has some cool references, and may take that opportunity to play catchup on some of the reworks that happened after I published that character's thread (Nova and Hammer have some new talents and abilities referencing their universe). Let me know if that all interests you all, and I'll see you all around!

How to get people out of QM and into HL/TL

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 11:37 AM PDT

The most popular game mode in HOTS, by player time spent, is in QM (likely around 45-60% of play time is in QM, unless it has changed since Blizzard last told us).

I am personally a player who spends most of my time in QM, but I would actually prefer to play HL/TL for a more competitive, balanced, and hopefully coordinated, experience. So, I thought about the things that prevent me from playing HL/TL more often, and I thought about ways that would solve those problems (hopefully solving them for many other players as well).

Specifically, there are three things that came to mind. None of these are original, but the fact that others have all said similar things before makes them all the more important for Blizzard to seriously consider.

Thing 1: Allow some sort of role selection for HL As a casual player, I fear playing HL because I might end up needing to play support. Let me tick a couple of check-boxes (Tank, solo-laner, ranged and/or melee, flex, etc.).

This isn't a new suggestion, but coming from a QM player (primarily), I have to believe I'm not the only one who stays in QM, more often than not, because I don't want to play something I'm no good at, and possibly let my teammates down because of it.

The only reason I can think of for Blizzard not already implementing some sort of role selection system, is they are afraid it would hurt matchmaking; however, introducing the system would hopefully introduce more of us QM players into the HL pool, helping to offset more selective match-making.

I won't go into the weeds on implementation details (plenty of other threads on the topic), but let us pick a preferred role, or roles, when queuing, and I believe you'll see a significant increase in HL participation (And hopefully, quality). In addition, I know that I would be more likely to buy heroes (especially new/OP ones), because I would want to make sure I have the heroes I need to fulfill my selected role(s).

Related to this: Hero swaps; though i believe this is not a major factor keeping QM players from playing HL

Thing 2: Improve TL participation by introducing social features that make it easy for me to find other players like me

This is self-explanatory, I hope. Give me some sort of social tool (clan system, lobby, rank-based chat, whatever floats your boat) that allows me to find players like me that I could queue up with in TL from time to time.

I don't play often enough to bother messing with team creation, but it would be great to have an easy solution to find a group of "chill platinum-ish players" to queue up in TL with.

Thing 3: Improve incentives/rewards for playing HL/TL After doing placement matches for the season rewards, there isn't much incentive to keep playing in HL/TL (from a rewards-earning perspective). In my opinion, Blizzard should provide stronger incentives that make people WANT to play HL. Making better rewards based on participation (rather than only winning and/or ranking up) would be a great way to get people to play HL/TL.

It can be simple - more gold per game for participation/win in a HL game, give out a loot chest for a win, or every 3 games, give out stimpaks (e.g., the short duration kind that used to be in loot chests), or something like it.

There are all sorts of ways that Blizzard could provide incentives for HL/TL participation, and I think they're really missing out with this. New incentives or rewards could even be done as an "event" to test it out temporarily, and see what happens.

Anyway, I know not everyone will agree with everything I've said, but it seems to me that Blizzard is really missing out on opportunities to promote the more competitive game modes to the large portion of the player based that spends most of their time in QM (not to mention this would be great for new players, as well).

Can we change Try Mode's default enemy hero to Stitches?

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 07:01 AM PDT

I dont know about everyone else but I constantly find my self changing the enemy hero in try mode to someone like stitches, because of their lack of armor and mass amount of hit point, stitches serves as a great accurate punching back. Or maybe just at the option of setting game defaults in try mode, because im constantly turning Malfurion off as well.

With the addition of voice comms I feel like we should really reconsider duo Q

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 08:52 PM PDT

As a community I feel like we should reconsider duo Q. I understand the benefits of solo Q. I understand why some of you so oppose duoQ. It won't be as fair, worse games, etc. Without looking at the benefits that duoQ can bring as a community/playerbase. I just think we remember the games being so unfair is because when duoQ was a thing in the past, MM was arguably worse and friends had superior communication. Now I think it's time to give duo a CHANCE, not have duo and call it no matter the results.

The biggest issue with duo Q in the past, in my opinion, was the voice advantage two friends had over every other player. You could be like I'm going to mosh follow up etc. Now, the average solo player has the advantage.

I do believe there will still be a slight quality decrease in SOME games because friends can have better synergy or MM can fuck up because you're both very high, but I think having another Q option is more beneficial.

The thing is, this playerbase has remained the same since alpha. I swear I've seen the same players in master/GM the entire time. I'm almost positive the same players who want solo Q will still play regardless because they did when duo Q was a thing and before we even had MM. While people who duo will still solo and duo when friends are online. And people who only enjoy playing with friends have the option.

Now this is important because other mobas DO have duo Q. Imagine coming from League learning you can't duo with your homie like you usually do. It might turn you off from playing.

I know we have QM/TL. But don't kid yourself QM isn't a HL setting, and TL is a joke considering how small the community is. Unranked is in the same boat. The only real competitive fun games that happen that improve you as a player is HL. The play TL isn't an argument because when we say we want duo, we want GOOD duo games. TL games aren't good and won't ever be with this playerbase. And I know solo Q players want the same thing, GOOD games. I just think we have the tools to close that gap now and we should give it another chance.

In my opinion the drop in game quality will be so negligible now that we have an established MM, ban system, and voice comms that having more Q options for players outweighs this. I know some of you take solo as the end all for true skill but the fact is a lot of us enjoy playing at a high level with a friend.

I truly believe there's more enjoyment and room to increase the playerbase than sticking to a strict solo Q only and we are at a point were we need to consider growth now that the playing field is even. Regardless of what's said, I'm sure the solo Q people will still play as they always have because they enjoy the game while at the same time giving more options to play the game at, let's face it, the only competitive/serious mode we have.

Edit*** Typos if any 4Head

Last thought: On the off chance this doesn't work out I guarantee my father's alcoholism the playerbase won't shrink and it won't alienate people because it's been mostly the same people playing this game for lightyears now. If it truly goes wrong we can go back to solo and say duo tis a silly place.

In fact, Blizzard could be cheeky and could market the return of duo Q tell yo friends.

tl;dr:

W

Can we have less severe punishment for a Disconnecting in draft and...

have the penalty amount scale for every instance? If an honest player DC's by chance in one draft it could be -100 and go up another -100 per additional DC.

Thanks for all the StarCraft content! Now, can we get some more Diablo sprays?

Posted: 21 Mar 2018 07:06 AM PDT

The Carbot stuff looks great, and I love the Zergling mount! But it's been almost a year since Heroes 2.0, and we still only have the 5 Diablo sprays we started with. Can we get some more? Also, people have pointed out that a simple pair of High Heavens and Burning Hells banners would fill a big gap in the banners.
