Lore PSA: Aliens have been canon since Fallout 2

Posted: 05 Mar 2018 09:22 PM PST

A few months back my lore PSA on Pip-Boys was quite well received, so I thought I may as well make a regular thing of them topic suggestions are warmly welcome.

Many have bemoaned that Bethesda has screwed up the lore with the crashed Alien ship in Fallout 4 that occurs when you hit level twenty. Or bemoaned the inclusion of Aliens in Mothership Zeta.

Alongside this has been the claim that Aliens in 1 and 2 were relegated to non-canon special encounters. However this is not the case in 2, which includes 3 confirmations of Alien life in the Fallout universe:

Naturally the following will contain mild spoilers for late game regions in Fallout 2

  • The first of which is the least conclusive is given by the Shi Emperor, which contains a reference to a "Xeno program" conducted by the Shi, the reference itself reading as such:

"The subject on which we had hoped to establish a series of meaningful experiments has disappeared, presumed either destroyed or stolen by the Hubologists. Further inquiries have proven fruitless. Until such time as further specimens are obtained, this database will remain inoperative." - Dr. Sheng

  • The second and most conclusive evidence is the word of Skynet in the Sierra Army Depot, which traces it's own origin back to Aliens:

"Skynet was conceived and developed in the year 2050. Through the use of alien technology a new thinking computer was perfected. In the year 2081, Skynet became self-aware. In 2120 Skynet was given a new set of instructions and then abandoned by the Makers."

  • The third and most obscure reference is entirely visual storytelling within the Sierra Army Depot. The fourth and deepest level of the complex contains three interrogation cells, one of which contains an Alien skeleton Confirming the nature of the skeleton, it is an identical art asset to the alien skeleton's found in Fallout 1's UFO crash special encounter However, there are also mentions of a subject being force fed mentats, so there could be an alternate explanation. This seems unlikely as the mentat subject died well over a week before the Sierra Army depot was evacuated.

It should be noted however, that Chris Avllone's Fallout Bible, as well as Fallout 3, New Vegas and 4, have retconned some of the Sierra Army Depot lore out of canon, in particular the timeline it gives, which was in conflict with the lore of Fallout 1 and 2

Further, In Fallout 1 generic scribes will claim the following:

"I've seen an alien space ship before." and according to the Fallout 1 dev written survival guide, Psychic nullifiers are based on alien technology.

Expanding on Mothership Zeta further

The dlc actually is faithful to the Sierra Army Depot lore, as the Elliott Tercorien's squadmates suffer the same Post-cryonic syndrome fate as Private Dobbs in the Sierra Army Depot. Dying in a matter of minutes. The fact bio med gel and cryonic research take place right around the corner from the Alien interrogation seems to imply an alien origin for cryonic research.

Another note is many have assumed Mothership Zeta implies the Aliens caused the war, however this is chiefly based on a holotape detailing the probing of General Chase, in which he refuses to give the nuclear launch codes. However, discounting the fact the audio in question was cut from the game. This is incongruous with the rest fo the dlc, in which Zetan abductions are haphazard, without regard for who or what has been abducted. And further incongruous with the fact their death laser, which they have never fired at earth, is magnitudes more more deadly than any nuke. Additionally, the Zetan ship's goal is explicitly research, and to create abominations from humans, a goal which is interfered with by a nuclear apocalypse.

In Summary

Aliens have been part of Fallout's canon since before Bethesda took the reins. It is incorrect multiple times over to blame the war on aliens, however it is not far fetched to blame the Zetan's for atleast some aspects of AI and cryonic research seen in the series. So you can potential blame them for bio med gel, and thus, Robobrains, the preservation of Mr House, the Sole Survivor, as well as the preservation of Shaun, and thus, synths.

Could you realistically role play the institute being good?

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 09:50 AM PST

I posted another thread about if the institute scientists (the ones who work on smaller projects not the division leaders, or the ones who work on the FEV lab or whatever) knew about the institute's atrocities. I have come to the conclusion that most people in the institute are not aware.

The reason I say this is because of what Dr. Li says about the institute leadership's lack of transparency, and the fact she and other scientists don't get the full story on the institute's operations. Hell, she didn't even know Virgil worked on the FEV project.

Also notice the scientists working on Phase 3 couldn't tell anyone else about what they were working on.

Also note the FEV project was classified.

And on top of that there are many influential people in the institute like Issac Karlin in Bioscience, Madison Li in Advanced Systems, and Alan Binet in Robotics who have a strong sense of morality, and I could see the sole survivor using their opinions to legitimize his new agenda as director, and use them to create positive change in the institute, and the other scientists (not the division heads) would very likely go along with it as they just do what the department heads tell them.

Anyone else see this as an opportunity to make the institute good?

I think with the proper guidance the institute could turn into a good faction.

With all of the DLCs, what is the best non-powered armor in terms of ballistic and energy resistance.

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 12:03 PM PST

I've never really found one set that really appeals to me, I've tried the Assault Marine armor, heavy combat armor, heavy synth armor and even the heavy versions of Nuka-World raider armor, even the Mechanist's armor with Ballistic Weave V and can't decide which I like best.

I don't want to have to run around in power armor all the time.

TIL you can accidentally kill Mama Murphy.

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 12:41 AM PST

So I'm like ten or so playthroughs in and doing one without mods to finish out my trophy collection and I was giving Mama Murphy chems to help increase my misc. objective count when suddenly she chokes and falls out of her chair because she OD'd on chems.

The fact that I've been playing Fallout 4 nearly nonstop since the day it came out and I'm still discovering new things is a testament to the amount of detail that Bethesda packs into these games and really makes you think about the long wait times being worth it between games.

Lone Wanderer, Courier, Sole Survivor team up?

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 01:06 PM PST

It's been a long time since I've been on this subreddit so idk if anyone else has mentioned this. But I was thinking about what a new fallout game could be like. In all the fallout games there is a different main antagonist, but a common enemy in all of the games, Vault-Tec. What if Vault-Tec didn't die in the great war? or what if they actually caused the war to conduct their social experiments? The protagonists in the fallout games have seen first hand that Vault-Tec wasn't exactly honest with many of the residents of their vaults from their adventures though the wasteland, so what if somehow the Lone Wanderer, The Courier, and the Sole Survivor all met, either by coincidence or a plot by a larger organization that has seen these individuals talents first hand, through their vaults. Then the three characters unite and explore the new wasteland setting, wherever it may be. I didn't create a whole story but I just think that would be an interesting basis for a new fallout game.

What happened to the mothership after the fallout 3 alien DLC

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 11:00 AM PST

I'd love to see a huge crash site in a future fallout game but I can't remember what happened to the ship. But I have a feeling that Bethesda are going to act like the DLC never happened.

Play xbox360 Fo3 GOTY on xbox one?

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 01:43 PM PST

So I want to play Fo3 again and eventually NV again too. Need a break from 4 tbh. The thing is when I got Fo4 it came with a download code for Fo3. Im just wondering, in terms of graphics/performance, should I play from the 360 disc&dlc disc or use the code&dlc disc? Or does it not really matter at all?

PSA: I cannot play on my xbox360 as the 360 was destroyed at a party. So please dont recommend that as an option. Ty

Great Khans following me glitch - please tell me I'm not the only one.

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:37 PM PST

I'm currently on my second gameplay of Fallout: New Vegas, and unlike my previous one (which I'll be honest with you, I abandoned midway since it was more of a trial one and I wasn't exactly happy with the choices I made), I did get the chance to visit the Great Khans and do a couple of side quests for them. I'm currently doing Oh My Papa and, because I killed Oscar Velasco in Bitter Springs, my reputation with the Great Khans is Soft-Hearted Devil. And, well, now I get Great Khan NPCs randomly following me in places.

Had one spawn midway in the Workers Shack in Sloan, interrupted my sleep and killed a couple of mine workers while remaining non-hostile to me. And then, two Great Khan chicks have followed me in Novac, where the screen zoomed in for dialogue, then zoomed out quickly with no message appearing. I looked it up to see what it was, and apparently this is happening with both Great Khan and Powder Ganger NPCs. Any of you had the same thing happening to you? Also, do you know any way I can make it stop? I know it's just a scripting glitch, but it's odd nevertheless.

I'm playing New Vegas with a mercenary character, which factions should I join, and which ending should I get?

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 02:00 PM PST

My character is a tough but kind hearted mercenary, which factions should I side with? What about the ending? Also, who's the best companion besides Rex for this type of character?

How can I prevent crashes on New Vegas (PC)?

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 01:20 PM PST

I took a break from New Vegas awhile ago. I reinstalled it and started playing it recently, but I've been having a lot of stability issues; after I play for awhile (maybe around 10 minutes), I experience long load times followed by either:

  • an immediate CTD
  • sound/objects failing to load before a CTD
  • a black screen and CTD

I've also been getting a lot of hanging and random crashes. I've been mainly playing with NVSE, New Vegas Anti Crash, New Vegas Stutter Remover, OneTweak, YUP, and all DLC.

How to Run FNV on a Mac Laptop

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 02:55 PM PST

I know every last one of you is laughing at me. This actually isn't for me; I run Windows 8.1. I honestly can't stand Macs, but that's beside the point.

So, here's the story: I want my SO to play FNV. They love it from what they've seen me play, but they run OSX. And it baffles me. It can't even run an .exe for crying out loud!

Previously, I had them download a workaround that allowed Windows-only games to run on their OS (PortCamp? Boot something? It's been quite a few months; please forgive my forgetfulness lol), but the game crashed so frequently (even more than normal) that it was rendered basically unplayable.

I really, really want them to have this experience and I know plenty of people have done this in the past. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Edit: I realize that I could have them partition their hard drive, but I know they wouldn't be comfortable with it. I can't offer them hands-on tech support since we live a thousand miles apart. Any solution other than that is welcome!

Would I like Fallout? (I know, another one of these posts )

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 01:21 PM PST

I couldn't seem to find a good post that describes my situation, sorry about probably the millionth post you've seen about this.

I play on PS4, by the way, though I have a decently powerful laptop (nowhere near as powerful as a desktop, but pretty powerful for a laptop) that I can play TES Oblivion on no problem.

I took a chance and got Skyrim for the first time almost a year ago and absolutely love it. I also got Oblivion a little while ago on my laptop and it's a little harder to adapt (since I've never been a PC gamer), but I still really like it. I've been told that I'd like Fallout games (I'm sure you can only imagine why).

I could run Fallout 3 or New Vegas on my laptop (I have checked), and/or I could get Fallout 4 for Playstation. I have done a little research on Fallout and it sounds interesting enough, but I'd appreciate any other explanations or descriptions. Obviously they have completely different concepts, but how similar or different are the RPG elements of Fallout as compared to the Elder Scrolls?

Other games I enjoy, for reference, are the Assassins Creed franchise and some sports (NHL, Rocket League) and fighting (MKX, Injustice) games, and I actually do enjoy Star Wars Battlefront, so I tend to like a wide variety of games.

Also New Vegas and Fallout 3 are $10 and 3 GotY is $20 on PC, so is it worth it to maybe try one of those out first?

Thanks for any advice or help!

What would be the total population of the American southwest circa 2282?

Posted: 06 Mar 2018 04:12 AM PST

Using any known numbers mentioned in the lore or through characters, can we estimate the population of the southwest, including all of New California, the Mojave, Baja and the Legion territories?
