Fallout - In your opinion, what does NV do wrong or do in a flawed way, and what do you think it does right?

In your opinion, what does NV do wrong or do in a flawed way, and what do you think it does right?

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 07:58 AM PDT

The dead horse that is Fallout 4's flaws has been beaten so much the horse has died thousands of times over, so can we start a discussion about what people find is flawed in New Vegas and what they also enjoyed?

And before people think of this solely as a opportunity to bash on NV as a reaction, I'm posting this as a way for people to at the very least be more critical of something they hold up as the pinnacle of the series in their minds, while also talking about what they really did enjoy.

For me, it tends to be the following.

  • The quest structure doesn't mesh very well with a open world. This is connected with my issue with the map design in New Vegas. In the original Fallouts, progression in the game world involved moving between individual maps that contained a area, settlement or encounter for the player to handle. And in my view, NV's quest design seems to unfold in a similar fashion to the originals, especially in the case of early quests during the time spent traveling through Goodsprings to Novac.

  • The game doesn't show many impacts or consequences of your actions in-game. What I am talking about here is how the game relies a lot on showing consequences through ending slides rather than through the gameplay or the story itself. As a example, killing Caesar or Kimball during the narrative doesn't impact the narrative in any way. Neither faction changes or reacts to their deaths beyond a reputation hit to the player, and the world itself isn't impacted visibly beyond a few messages from Mr New Vegas and some dialogue from Lanius or Oliver during the very final battle.

  • The dialogue is absolutely filled with exposition that sometimes doesn't seem to match the character that dialogue is from. To expand on this point, I want to use Easy Pete as the example. I find his dialogue options involving background on the NCR, the Legion and the conflict over the dam to conflict greatly with his personality as a character. He is introduced as a character that doesn't seem to talk much, and otherwise just seems to be a old man minding his own business in a frontier town. However, his dialogue changes from matching that personality when you ask him about the Legion and the NCR, when he becomes much more well-spoken and concise with his perspective on them.

  • The story doesn't naturally connect to the Courier in a personal way. This is definitely more preference-related than anything, but I've struggled to really come up with convincing motivations or reasons for my Couriers to involve themselves as deeply in the faction conflict as the story expects them to be, unless I give them a idealogy that they follow. That to me doesn't flow that naturally though, mainly because the game itself never seems to approach the motivations of the player in being involved after dealing with Benny. You either literally stumble on Yes-Man in Benny's Room, are summoned by Mister House to work for him, or are given letters by the NCR and Legion to advance their interests. There's no sense of natural progression into the next stage of the story after Benny in my view because of those reasons.

Now on to what I think it does right

  • It handles its companions extremely well.

  • It has a varied amount of weaponry to choose from.

  • The DLC outright enhances the base storyline of NV in massive ways.

  • There are many varied approaches to the sidequests in the game.

Just as a explanation, the main reason I don't really go into much detail on what I like about NV is mainly due to the amount of discussion there already is on NV's good qualities. I feel the critical stuff deserves more explanation.

I tested this and it happened in my own game. According to the Fallout Wiki, the Codac R9000 camera actually fires invisible zero damage projectiles.

Dead money "letting go"

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:40 AM PDT

Let's be real here. Why should we let go? I came to the Sierra Madre seeking adventure not fortune. but then i get stuck there against my will and in the process I go out of my way to save all 3 companions when i dont need to.

also if anything couldn't killing Elijah be considered not letting go because your killing him over this. Your exacting revenge and there's no choice to not kill him besides taking the gold so if anything by taking the gold and leaving Elijah's life in the hands of fate then your letting go of vengeance. After all if anything there's is more of a chance of Elijah escaping and living rather then me just killing him So if anything the only 2 people in this dlc who need to "let go" are dean domino and Elijah and if you went out of your way to save dean domino he does let go so that just leaves Elijah.

Another thing is Elijah Shames you the whole dlc for being greedy and not letting go well maybe I would GO if you took this COLLAR off me. I don't have a choice to let go. Just my thoughts though

Fallout 5 plot ideas!!!! Something... unexpected.

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 10:26 AM PDT

So I had an idea last night for a possible Fallout 5 setting and plot premise...

What if it took place in Missouri?

Now I know most of you are thinking "wtf, Missouri? Boring, go troll the elder scrolls community!" But hear me out.

The game involves 5 large individual maps; St Louis, now a raider city; Kansas City, a trade hub; Branson, a sort of Vegas but more entertainment based, a sort of rural overworld map in between all of these, and the caves underneath the whole state.

The plot is based around the various vaults in the state and their purposes, and how the vaults will play a key roll in the now ensuing fight to control the Heartland.

The factions are the Enclave, who are working secretly to rebuild, the Brotherhood (duh I guess), the remains of the Institute (as canonical I'm sure the SS was a good guy and sounded the alarm), the wildcard (you by taking over any of the present factions) and a few dozen smaller factions.

You would be a vault dweller in the only normal vault in Missouri, under Jefferson city, and you would build your character from youth like in FO3, eventually leaving the vault, 2 ¹/² years after the events of fo4. From their you explore with the basic goal of finding a prewar item that could determine the fate of the Heartland and maybe the whole Wasteland.

We would see the return of green on the surface, with the new institute having become more... understanding of the world and trying to help instead of be underground dickheads. There would be new advancements in power armor and cybernetics, and a larger diversity of weapons than ever before.

With an abundance of playable area, and new, more diverse enemies, along with more companions and maybe even race options, this would have the potential to be the best fallout yet.

Thousands of possible endings, dozens of potential dlc locations and additions, and most of all, the most world changing choices available, it would be a fallout like no other.

What do you think?

I recently started my first survival play through of FO4. Cant believe how much content I’ve missed from being able to fast travel!

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 09:50 PM PDT

Since the game came out I've gone on benders with new characters and new builds etc, but this is different. I swear every time I walk somewhere I discover a new area or a new random event. If you haven't tried I really recommend! It brings new life back to the game, I can't put the controller down again! Hadn't been like this since launch.

(Fallout 4) Brahmin Corpses in Dry Rock Gulch

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 08:22 AM PDT

Just a while ago when I was clearing out Dry Rock Gulch in Nuka World, I came across this brahmin corpse. I thought it was a normal brahmin corpse for a while and as I went near to loot it, I noticed its stomach "move". Then all of a sudden, these bloodworms burst out with brahmin parts and guts. I startle-killed them. I don't have fear of worms but that, for me, was pretty disturbing. Also, I took a closer look at the brahmin head after the bloodworms came out and there's a portion of its brain that's visible. Anyways, how was your experience when you encountered this? Are there other disgusting/disturbing/gross moments you've come across (in any Fallout game)?

What is the best and most thorough way of destroying every faction in fo4?

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 11:22 AM PDT

I'm starting a play through where I'm hoping to level the whole commonwealth. I know you can ruin the railroad by just walking into hq and slaughtering them but without going through another faction I don't think you can destroy the prydwen and without the brotherhood you can't explode the institute. What in yoir opinion would be the best way to make the commonwealth uninhabitable?

Are the Fallout 3 DLCs worth it to play?

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 02:20 PM PDT

A while ago, someone gave me a code for Fallout 3 that they'd gotten with Fallout 4. I'd never played a Bethesda game, but I started it then. I set it down for about a year and a half, got Skyrim between then, and just started playing it again nonstop recently. After picking up where I was, I finished the main quest very quickly and haven't done much outside of that. I want to feel like I've finished the game, but I don't know what I should focus on next?

Should I get all the best gear, complete as many side quests as possible, just explore as much as I can (I have not even touched the northern parts of the map), or should I try to start DLC material? I believe the DLCs are free, so it could be interesting.

If I should start the DLC, then which DLC should I do first?

Fallout 4 benevolent leader trophy.

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:08 AM PDT

Ok so I've done a ton of research on this and I'm still having a crazy hard time getting this trophy. I have a settlement at starlight drive with 21 settlers, 23 beds, 30 food, 33 water, and 35 power. I can't seem to get it above 92 happiness. Oh and my defense is at 140

I read the best way to get the happiness to go up is it make the highest level restaurants. Right now I have 11 of the restaurants, 2 surgery clinics, and a general store and a clothing store.

I'd make two more restaurants and replace the store and clothing store, but it seems like every time I move a settlers to a new job, shit goes haywire and everyone leaves there fucking jobs and becomes unassigned. Also randomly if I'm out doing other things on the map and check my pip boy, it will say random shit like I have zero beds or 40+ people in my town when in reality I don't. Some please help I'm super deep into this and I'm loosing my mind trying to get this last trophy.

Mods and Stat Allocation Question? Fo4

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 04:25 PM PDT

Hey! So I'm thirty hours into my first Fallout 4 play-through and I've reached the point where the main quest is finished and even the side quests (that I have discovered) are tapering off. Now, I know I could continue down this play-through, but I kind of want to restart because the perks that I have are.. not.. exactly... optimal.. I kind of just gave myself random things because I've never played a Fallout game before.

Anyway, when I restart I'm wondering the best stats to invest into to give myself a Jason Bourne type of character. Like James Bond without the posh. High stealth, good with a sniper and can handle myself in a fight but prefer to keep it to the shadows. I guess Hitman 47 would be a good comparison but I don't care too much about the stylish part of it....

Anyway, any help I can get in regards to that will be much appreciated! The next thing I had questions about would be mod suggestions. This is my first RPG, and modding is a new experience. I have followed some guides though and have changed the .ini files needed to enable modding, as well as download Nexus Mod Manager, which is what I want to use. What I am having trouble with is finding mods and dealing with load order.

Right now I have none. I know that I don't really want to up the graphics unless it's for optimization, because I'm using a Nvidia 960 card so a little old. What I think would be cool is maybe more weapons, melee in particular, but also snipers. More perks/quests would also be cool? Idk. I don't know what mods are capable of to be honest. Maybe like general quality of life stuff? I know that some things in the game were annoying like how I always aimed at people when talking to them.

Fallout 1 Alien Blaster

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 03:56 PM PDT

I didn't know it was a random encounter. I've played through fallout 1 twice and both times I've gotten it near the boneyard (one was further north than the other). Has anyone ever not gotten blaster on a play through? Just curious.

How do the minute men sustain themselves?

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 08:13 PM PDT

So in Fallout 4, we are told by Preston "A settlement needs out help" Garvey that the Minutemen are a volunteer army that risks their lives to save the commonwealth. While that's noble and cool, people need to feed their families, infrustructure needs maintenance and ammo has a cost etc. Basically, running a nation-wide army is costly, and we have no proof that they have any sort of tax like the NCR, government backing like the Enclave, etc.

Do they survive on donations alone? Looting? Do they rely solely on the Sole Survivor for money? Any of these answers lead to them being steamrolled by any legitimately organized and well-maintained army, heck, even the gunners given enough time. There's probably an answer to this, but I can't find it. If not, speculate what you think

The Cave O' Dimma Death! Pt. II of Burrow City

Posted: 29 Mar 2018 09:15 AM PDT

Continuing from my last post part II of Burrow city shows off the rest of the Vault 88's locations and a mini story of the v88's survivor, I've split the album in two because I couldn't fit all of it in one without it being waaaay too long. There's also a mini story of the Vault's survivor as she try to make it out alive. The "Cave O' Dimma Death" was built so that Doug could send helpless vault 88 dwellers and watch them die to the caves various monsters. Today's Fighter is the last survivor of Vault 88.

Modlist used for this settlement

Was replaying Fallout 3 and it made me realize a big complaint about New Vegas.

Posted: 28 Mar 2018 06:43 PM PDT

I don't feel like there are any massively dramatic battles or sequences in New Vegas. In Fallout 3, the main story battles with the Enclave feels like a huge event, with many moving pieces(Especially with Broken Steel). Whereas New Vegas gives players many more options, but it feels to me like many smaller steps completed on your own instead of with your chosen faction. This leads to the endgame being only the Battle of Hoover Dam, which much shorter than the ending of Fallout 3.
