Sub Appreciation Post

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 02:13 AM PST

Can I just say that I love this sub.

No matter what the post is about: First rocket launch, First time you've done your own automation setup, You want to show off your factory, Ask even the simplest of questions about the game

You name it, no matter what the post is about, everyone is so friendly and helpful. Even if the actual thing that is posted isn't efficient or doesn't use ratios, everyone is just nice and supportive.

Just felt like giving some recognition to what is probably the best fanbase for a game <3

Edit: sorry about that list formatting, I'm on mobile

Ever needed to make a specific ratio splitter, but never knew how? Now you don't even need to try!

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:23 PM PST

There are a lot of different scenarios that I've seen people need a "specific ratio" splitter in (e.g. nuclear setups, perfect efficiency, etc.). For those people, and because I was bored, I made the Splitter Generator!

Please keep in mind, this is in no way polished, and definitely will have bugs, but you're welcome to test it out! You can download the first release here.

What is your favorite mod that’s not well-known?

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 07:54 PM PST

There are so many great mods out there that are just obscured because no one knows about them. Share them with the community here so we too, can be aware of these fantastic mods. I'll update the post with some mods I find really stand out.

Mods for a beginner Factorio player

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 12:15 PM PST

Hey guys. So I've been playing Factorio for some hours (like 10 or so), and I've been quite enjoying it, and I see mods, I see opportunities. I want my early game to be a bit easier, as I don't really like the tempo of it. Do you guys have any mods to recommend for a beginner player like me? Thanks for the answers.

Help me upgrade my iron and copper setup.

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 08:48 AM PST

Alright. I've been thinking about this and I need your help /r/Factorio!

right now I have a combined copper and iron plate factory where all trains go to pickup their stuff

It's located near over 200 million worth of ore (both types)

It has the ore mining and smelting

There are some major issues though!

  • Copper and Iron plate share bots so it's hard to prioritize

  • Bots have to travel far from ore patch to the smelter

  • Iron train stops will eventually all run out of iron plates and I have them set to be disabled if there's not enough iron plates and this will make all the trains reset. (I 'fixed' this by setting one train stop to be enabled at all times)

  • The train depot is far away! A round trip is about 5 minutes

I did once change it all but I lost that save (you may remember that one post from a week ago where I lost my 400+ hr save)

What I did then was basically have a train depot near my base where all finnished iron and copper plates would be brought to so that the train travel is less.

I'm still doing that but I also want to redo my ore mining and smelting.

My target is a setup where 5 - 10 trains can be loaded constantly.

My current setup makes 55k -ish iron plates per minute

What to do!

Basics of factorio

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 04:03 PM PST

Hello, I've just bought the game and already have a saved game of about 8 hours, but then the trouble starts beginning, like the shortage of iron at automatic productions. I don't know how to spread the automation can someone please give some startertips or some tips overall?

Thanks in advance :).

Green Science factory taking only iron and copper plates with 100% utilisation on all but 2 assemblers (120/min)

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 03:32 PM PST

See the screenshot (or JPEG if you're on mobile). Blueprint in comments.

Notice that belt on the left sticking outside the 24x24 square - oh the time I spent trying to avoid that... In the end I chose to keep it for aesthetic reasons, and now various other blocks in my factory have similar little imperfections. I've grown to like it.

Every assembling machine is working at 100% capacity apart from the two inserter assemblers, which are at 2/3 capacity. This factory outputs 120 items per minute.

Why take in copper instead of green circuits: I'm just trying to see how far I can push the idea of only belting around "raw" resources, by my arbitrary definition of "raw", while producing everything else locally. Why aim for 100% utilisation: it just feels right, plus it sort of optimizes for area, though that was not the primary goal. Finally, I wanted it to look interesting.

Why is the belt on the top not able to carry as much copper as the one on the bottom?

What are some of your favorite UPS saving tricks?

Posted: 03 Mar 2018 05:54 PM PST

Some common ones are:

Using Solar power, as that solar panels and accumulators are treated as singular processing entities, regardless of numbers

Long trains, as each train, regardless of length uses the same amount of processing, and longer trains carry much more, and so are more UPS efficient

Separate and small roboport logistics coverage, Each roboport logistics zone picks a logibot for transporting goods, a smaller number means a smaller list to select from. Which should decrease the amount of processing needed.

Minimize piping, fluid processing is more process intensive than bots, belts, or trains

What are some other tips out there?

I ask because my base is getting down to 30-40 UPS and i'd like to bring it back up to something a little better.
