Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

Salty Sunday - Rage Rants and complaints

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 10:09 AM PST

Have you been the one missing the Mewtwo EX raidpass? Maybe you haven't been lucky the whole week and that damn raid Tyrannitar ran and everyone else caught him.

Or the worst part, maybe it's monday again?!

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Here we rant about everything that goes wrong, someone who sniped a gymspot ( ̄Д ̄), a missed Tyrannitar again (ಠ_ಠ) or that stupid bug which made you miss your raid because of the server desync, ending the raid prematurely (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ

No personal insults, no trolls and provocation but all salty stuff is accepted.

  • Only salty posts allowed ( ಠ_ಠ )

  • No uncivilty or personal information allowed. ☜(`o´)

  • Complaints can be posted here as well, agree that stuff needs to change here as well, like the spawn rate or gym bugs.

    (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Don't forget to hydrate after all the salt!

A Spoofer Flaunting his Delinquency and a Letter to Niantic

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:43 PM PST

Screenshot of Anachronistic Shiny Dragonite

To start with some context. This image was taken Saturday 3 hours before the local start time for community day. This player a notorious local spoofer, whose identity I've redacted in the interest of privacy, has been so emboldened by Niantic's complete apathy and inaction to the spoofer situation that he is flaunting his abuse of the system. He obviously spoofed to a location on another continent where the community day event was occurring to catch a shiny dragonite only to post it publicly in a gym for all to see hours before anyone locally could have a chance to catch one. At this point he doesn't even feel the need to conceal his illicit activities because he knows Niantic won't do anything about it.

I wrote this to Niantic and submitted it to their support along with my report of his cheating behavior. I copy it here for you to see:

Hello,

I am truly dismayed by the complete and utter lack of action on the part of Niantic to curtail the behaviour of so called "spoofers" and others who use methods of cheating like those who falsify their GPS location. The actions of these few bad actors negatively impacts every legitimate player of the game.

I understand that there will always be those who will attempt to cheat and manipulate any system. What I am so disappointed in is the complete lack of a response Niantic has had to these people ruining everyone else's game experience. These "Spoofers" are so emboldened by your lack of a response they aren't even bothering to pretend they aren't cheating anymore.

Most nights a group of spoofers sweeps across the city taking out gyms and filling them with their team covering vast swaths of distance at speeds that could not be covered in a car let alone walking speeds that would be required to traverse the parks and other locations without roads that contain the gyms they take down.

However the most blatant incident comes right before community day. This notorious cheater who calls himself the [Redacted], a reference to his spoofing into gyms and placing a Blissey after he has defeated the defenders, falsified his location to elsewhere in the world to take advantage of their time zones for community day. He then captured a shiny dratini, evolving it into a dragonite, and placed it into a gym here in North America. All within a time period that would be impossible for any legitimate player. The attached screenshot with time should show this, but I'm sure you can verify my claims by looking at your game logs. This along with a preponderance of other evidence and negative behaviour over months has been reported to Niantic and yet this player continues his behaviour unimpeded and quite frankly emboldened by your inaction.

This leaves legitimate players questioning whether your reporting feature actually has a purpose. Does anyone read these reports or do they simply accumulate somewhere completely unread? Worse yet, for all I know this message won't actually be recorded anywhere at all, and all I'm doing now is screaming into the wind.

If someone does read this I ask for a reply to this message. I expect some justification for why such blatant abuse of the rules, for actions that negatively affect so many others are seemingly ignored, if not implicitly encouraged, by your inaction and are permitted to continue.

This situation and your response, or lack there of, has seriously jeopardized my faith in Niantic and makes me question whether I still wish to play Pokémon Go.

Regards, [Redacted]

At this point I received their automated reply stating that I would not receive any kind of follow up in the interests of privacy and so I replied with this:

I understand you will not yet have had a chance to review my initial comments, but I just received your automated response. So I would like to reiterate, I realize you cannot comment on actions against particular players, that would be a breach of privacy. I do not expect an update an update on any particular action you take in this case.

However I ask you give me some token response to indicate your intention to take this spoofer situation more seriously. How have you allowed things to get this bad, this blatant? What do you intend to do in the future to prevent such behavior going forward.

Quite honestly I'm not holding my breath for any kind of response from Niantic, or any action whatsoever. This has all been very disheartening. This player and others like him have been ruining my, and others', game experience for months and Niantic has done nothing despite dozens of reports.

Do you feel my criticisms are valid? Is there anything else you think I could do?

[Complaint] The Triple Legendaries Hunt is Terrible Wiħ Short Notice

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 09:53 AM PST

45 minutes is not enough time to get organized to pursue a legendary. Especially when you're on foot and are now limited to ~2 mile radius, but that's only if the group is fine scheduling late.

But this is a pain in the ass when it is finally a certain weaħer, and the corresponding legendary is not spawning. All of the initial Kyogre weeks, it rained for only a few hours at all, thanks to Winter. But thus far, it hasn't rained in game during raid hours yet since Kyogre's returned (it has at night). Sunny hasn't come yet eiħer for Groudon. But now that it's Windy? Kyogre and Groudon are everywhere. Rayquaza is not to be seen.

Windy weaħer comes maybe once every 3 weeks here, recalling the last time we had windy in game. That is concerning for when Rayquaza is scheduled to leave, it'll probably get windy again right after he's gone.

If we could at least tell what Pokemon were in the eggs before the hatch through some sort of color coding, we'd all be able to communicate and show up at hatch time just fine. And we wouldn't have our hopes shattered when the wrong Pokemon spawns. Not just for T5, but all eggs.

[Discussion] Does the Hypocricy of People who are anti-spoofying but multi-acccount bother anyone else?

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 02:13 AM PST

My local group recently started a rule in our chat that we aren't to talk about spoofing. That doesn't really bother me, I don't spoof and spoofers don't really have an effect on my gameplay (I realize some areas do have a huge spoofing problem). However, what bothers me is that our group's admins are perfectly fine with using more than one device to play as they do it themselves. Where some people have issues with spoofers taking gyms, I find myself with the issue of multi-account people taking our gyms. We are already an underrepresented team in our area, but then when people show up with 2-3 devices it just isn't feasible to hold on to a gym prior to raids and things to that effect. The other part that really bothers me is when we end up breaking up raid groups to accomondate multi-accounters. I just find it crazy that the people in my area can be so anti-spoofing, but perfectly fine with multi-accounting... which to me is just as bad.

Caught one of my favourite pokemon, brother said 'cool', mom said she'd love to cook it, and my little sister doesn't understand the significance of it enough to satisfy me. So here I am

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 07:12 PM PST

So I was sitting on the shitter today and, like any normal person, I decided to pull out Pokemon Go and see if there was anything cool nearby. And lo and behold, a fucking Ninetales. One of my favourite pokemon in the whole damn series. Enough that seeing a Vulpix nearby is usually enough to get me scurrying outside since they're rather rare where I live.

So there I was, on the shitter, with one of my favourite pokemon nearby. There was no way I was giving this chance up, so I freaking jumped up and - okay no that would be disgusting. I finished up, cleaned up, washed my hands (with soap), dried them and then I booked it. And I mean booked it.

Earlier today actually, at the same location the Ninetales was at, a Vileplume spawned. I only made it halfway there before it disappeared tho :/ Determined to make it in time this time around, I sprinted the ~500m distance to the pokestop the Ninetales was chilling at, probably barbecuing an Oddish. Panting and out of breath I finally reached it... and the majestic fox appeared. Four agonizing pokeballs worth of waiting later... I caught it.

Leisurely walked back home, caught a Gligar, hatched a Feebas (that was hype) caught a Numel, whatever. Then I needed someone to gloat to. Can't just catch one of your favourite pokemon and then not tell anyone, right?! But yeah, no one was really interested :| So here I am, lol. I don't think this is against the rules but if it is sorry pls dun kill me

The Ninetales itself is 8/14/14 (dat HP IV ruining everything damn) but I don't really care too much, I just wanted it for collection purposes. And maybe showing off at gyms since it's so beautiful.

I wish I'd taken screenshots of it in nearby and possibly when it spawned too but I was too much in a hurry so... oh well

[Suggestion] Modify the way we tap pokemon on the map in order to avoid selecting the wrong one when they spawn too close to each other.

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 07:42 PM PST

It's really annoying when you get overlaping spawns and you have to be as precise as posible with your fingertip in order to select the one you want to catch, especially when you are playing as a passenger and if you don't pick the right one, by the time you exit the catch screen, you will already be far away and the pokemon might have disappeared.

My suggestion: When you tap a pokemon, the pink circle appears around it. If there were any other pokemon close to it, holding your finger while moving it would also move this selection circle between the various pokemon until you get the one you want. Releasing your finger takes you to the catch screen.

What do you think?
