In Snaphot 18w08a, caves in oceans can now be completely flooded with water, and ravines that cut into lava pools have obsidian and magma blocks instead.

The new oceans are great, but... (A point about gravel)

Posted: 21 Feb 2018 08:37 AM PST

Hello, /r/minecraft. I am very excited about the upcoming update! The oceans have been long in need of some love! Mojang has done a great job so far, because:

  • It focused on an aspect the game was lacking.

  • It gave us fun new mechanics that have great replayability and possibilities (like the bubbles). Every update needs some new fun mechanics.

  • It added more variety that makes the Minecraft world even richer ( new animals, etc)

  • It will make underwater builds much better-looking, now that we will be able to use stairs and slabs without looking weird.

All these are great, but there's one more thing that Mojang needs to fix. The oceans still do not look great with all that gravel.

I never understood why they changed the ocean floor to gravel a few years ago. It made the oceans much worse-looking. My suggestion, to make oceans look better is:

Make sand the main block on the ocean floor, but with variations. There should be some parts with gravel, dirt, stone, etc.. This, along with the seaweeds and the other new stuff, will make the oceans look much better-looking and far more interesting.

I know that the update isn't over yet and we have many more changes to look forward to. I really hope that changing the ocean floor will be one of them. I believe that many in our community feel the same.

edit: There has been a debate about realism vs looks. Here is a suggestion made my /u/_cubfan_ :

What if they took a compromising approach?

Make shallow oceans spawn with sand and deep oceans with gravel.

I think that'd be the best solution as it is both more realistic and better aesthetically.

Underwater caves are cool, but there should be an incentive to explore them over regular caves when looking for resources.

I really hope Mojang isn't with done them. In their current state, there is no reason for a player to explore an underwater cave vs a regular cave. At the very least a survival player will need potions of water breathing and a bit of glowstone to explore them anyway. There is a lot of potential to make exploring them a truly unique and fun experience for even a late game developed player:

-Probably the easiest and most likely thing we are to see is a item/block of some sort that is unique to underwater caves. An increase in ore generation, maybe even a new ore, new plant, new material or whatever could only be found there. I saw someone say they were hoping for a luminescent plant, which would be extremely cool.

-A new hostile mob would be a fantastic addition, something that lurks only in the dark depths of the ocean. When attacked would give a status effect like blindness for a very short time so it is something that is truly a threat, even with full diamond armor.

The idea of exploring a dark expansive mass underwater in search of an elusive material while being thwarted by scary deep sea mystical creatures is something that entertains me.

And I understand it's only been added in the recent snapshot, so there is a good chance more will come to them in the future

On a side note, it would be a great time to add an enchantment to the bow that allows arrows to travel underwater, or maybe that's why we have the trident :/

I'm an adult and still enjoying the game as much as when I was younger. Can anyone else relate?

Posted: 21 Feb 2018 05:12 AM PST

Everyone that I meet in real life keeps talking about Minecraft almost as if it was a game for kids only... I was in high school when Minecraft first became available to the public and got instantly hooked to the game. Now I'm in my mid twenties and still pretty much hooked. I think it's a great game that can truly be enjoyed by everyone, not just the young, and it frustrates me that it's continuously labelled as a game for children. Anyway, don't have a question, just wanted to vent, thanks if you read this far. :)
