Miniguide: How to deal with Cho'Gall

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 02:26 PM PST

Wrote this up for somebody on this board, but people asked me to make a full post out of it. If you have any additional suggestions, feel free to add!!!

It's important to understand what Cho'gall actually does in a fight. It's a relatively low CC, very mobile bruiser + sustain damage/poke ranged assassin. This means a few things:

  • Low CC: You can dive past them, you can dive onto them, they'll struggle with peeling regardless. This means that Cho'gall's backline is always a viable target. Neither of the heroes has the CC to stop you from just running past them and hard-engaging vulnerable targets.
  • Very Mobile: When you get yourself in a fight with them, it's feast or famine. Cho'gall will run you and your mates down and chase you back to your towers if you give him the chance. Similarly, he can fairly easily escape if you can't lock him down, making it difficult to secure the kill.
  • Sustain Damage: Low cooldown and lots of AOE damage make it so standing near Cho'gall in a longer fight is a very risky proposition. They're also constantly regenerating off you. This means that you want to get the kill fast. This is where some percentile damage is great (Cursed Bullet, Devastating Charge, Seven Sided Strike) but other percentile damages struggle (e.g. Tychus can't get/stay in range, Malthael's damage is too slow).
  • Poke Damage: Gall has high range and remains 100% mobile during casts, which means they can poke stuff down at liberty. This by extension means your team needs to either dive hard and fast, or have a strong sustain support (ideally with isolation, see later). If you opt to draft dive, you always have the option available to you to ignore the fat fucker and dive the backline, just remember that Cho'gall deals out high damage, so it frequently happens that you kill 3 people and then get wiped.

The way to beat Cho'gall is by having the tools to punish the pick in the early midgame.

In the early game, this means exploiting their lack of bodies. Abuse the fact that you have 25% more heroes on the map to exert high macro pressure. Heroes like Greymane are great because they can jungle and have good wave clear, but don't underestimate for example Falstad and Dehaka either. A strong macro opener should allow you to quite comfortably get yourself a 10v9 lead which you can extend into a 12v10 lead. This is your window to shine and snowball.

This means you want heroes that spike at/before heroics, because your window to 'win' the game starts becoming much smaller when Cho'gall reaches level 16, and teeny tiny when they get to level 20. Use the window where you are ahead in macro and in levels (and probably talents) to get leads through objectives or sheer sieging of structures. At the minimum you want to have a keep down by 16, because that provides you with a wincondition.

What you want these heroics to do is put high, fast damage on Cho'gall and/or help securing kills and/or isolate targets. Meanwhile you want those heroics to come with heroes that can siege decently and have a strong macro game.

Some examples include:

  • Greymane: He can jungle, he has wave clear, he has obscene single target damage especially with a Bullet opener, and he can dive into or past Cho'gall.
  • Falstad: Can isolate targets far enough that they can't be saved by allies and can't really escape. A strong gust can make or break teamfights and versus Cho'gall it's usually pretty easy to land those money gusts. As with every global, great macro comes with the package, though his damage isn't too high.
  • Kharazim: A support that can dive and has very high burst damage on an isolated Cho'gall.
  • Anub'arak can disable Cho'gall for up to 8 seconds, plenty of time to ravage the 5v3 that remains. Besides that, he has great chase and enough disruption to keep Cho'gall locked down for a bit.
  • Diablo in similar fashion has high CC times as well as very strong burst damage post 13, which disables Cho long enough to burst him down.
  • Leoric is a bit more situational because you need additional tools to isolate and burst, but Entomb can be combo'd with e.g. Mighty Gust or Devastating Charge. Just remember that you pick Leoric for his Entomb and the synergistic potential, not that little W DOT.
  • Other strong picks include Thrall, Junkrat, Maiev, Medivh.

Your gameplan is to draft macro, isolation and strong burst. Outmacro to get ahead, snowball through superior teamfighting, close out the game preferably at 16 talents. Always remember that Cho'gall's CC is mediocre at best so his teammates are always a viable kill target. Also remember that Cho'gall shines in long fights, so don't be afraid to back out if your heroic rotation doesn't find value - macro is always a viable backup plan.

Rehgar himself is leading me to get my legendary weapon. As you can see here, his title is Hero of the Storm.

I thought that was really cute. Appreciate the cross-promotion, Blizz! :3

Request to bring back periodic Hero Discussion threads.

A few months ago (8 according to my Reddit search) this subreddit would feature a moderated hero discussion.

Is there any interest from this community to bring it back?

Jaina's Water Elemental damage to Chilled targets does not give progress towards Ice Block anymore

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 05:19 PM PST

This appeared at the same time as the Wintermute bug, which was fixed today. However, it still doesn't give progress towards Ice Block.

Has there been any comment about this nerf? Is it a bug or intended?

I'm giving up HOTS for 40 days.

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 11:39 AM PST

I'm giving up HOTS for lent because this game is my all consuming vice and pleasure. This isn't meant to be a religious post, but a written confession that I am trying to hold myself to. I absolutely love this game, faults and all. Yes there are issues, but I have too much fun and spend an embarrassing amount of time playing this game every week. It's not all rosy though; toxicity builds up inside me during HL and I haven't spent enough quality time with my friends and family. This is the only video game that I really play, but I will shun all PC games to prevent myself from trying to fill the HOTS void. I will get through these next 40 days without HOTS, but I'm wondering if I should avoid HOTs vids on Twitch & Youtube...? There is no question that I'll be lurking on this subreddit, but I hope to take these next 40 days to recuperate, meditate and come out a better person for it. See you all in April! Wishing you the best.

I think it’s time to talk about it again, on implementing a commendation system.

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 10:20 AM PST

The system would have to be simple yet rewarding for bad behavior to diminish. The idea I have come up with would have to be a bit generous on Blizzards side, but would at the same time increase revenue from less players leaving the game due to a bad match.

The simple idea is for every match you play you get a key, or some love ship friend magic points, whatever you want to call it. You are able to hand out these commendations to players on your team at the end of the match. You will need these keys, or what have you, to open a special chest that contains randomly generated gold/gems/crystals/mounts/skins. The number of keys needed to open the chest and the amount of the reward would have to be ironed out by a better mathematician than I, but the general concept would simply lead to better games.

If you think it limits people from speaking their mind then let me just say that if you said what needed to be said and they ignore your advice and still don't give you a key, then you are out one key, but that person is probably out of 4 keys I would assume.

It's a simple Karma system that promotes good behavior and teamwork, something I would love to see in this game.

What is Junkrat's position?

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 09:45 PM PST

Some said he is a mage, yes he do had good wave clear like or the mage did, but........ Any burst damage? He is as fragile as other mage, even he doesn't cost any mana, his damage comes much more slower than all other mage; Now he feels like a specialist hero cause feels he just weak at team fight.

Why no Heroes Of The Dorm announcement on here or the Blizzard launcher??

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 08:31 PM PST

Just as the title says, why isn't this being promoted more? It's a really fun tournament to watch and gives you a break from the typical HGC snoozefest for drafting the same comps every game. We constantly complain about the player base and almost nothing is done to promote this or HGC feelsbadman.

A lot of Content was added since 2.0 Buuut...

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 03:08 AM PST

While there's been a lot of Portraits, Skins Sprays and even a good amount of Announcers added to the game since the Launch of Heroes 2.0. There hasn't been a lot of Banners besides the Genji/Dva banners that came out around 2.0's Launch there's only been 4 Banners added. 3 of them being part of season events and the 1 Other came out with the Kel'Thuzad release event. Wondering if We could start seeing some new Banners added? Would be nice to get some Diablo Villains and Angels Banners, same with Some more Warcraft faction Banners. And perhaps a Primal Zerg Banner ?

Upcoming OW changes: Sombra to hack mobility, Hanzo to lose scatter arrow.

Posted: 14 Feb 2018 01:56 PM PST

Upcoming OW changes signalled by blizz (Sombra in PTR, Hanzo not yet) are addressing a few points of contention. Sombra will now be able to ground all mobile characters with her hack ability, removing mobility from the shimada bros as well as Lucio and Pharah. Mei is also being given a slight buff in freeze ability to help lock down "hypermobile" characters whom otherwise take up all the teams time locking down. Hanzo is penned to lose his scatter arrow, possibly to be replaced by a burst shot ability, meaning no more "shoot the ground" 1-shots.

What are the implications for HOTS now that OW is taking extra measures to lock down mobility? And the infamous scatter arrow is on the chopping block?
