New Trials Record Low Participation - 77,814

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:22 AM PST

As someone fed up with the PvP in this game as most anyone else, I really did expect the bleeding to start to slow, but just 3 weeks ago Destiny 2 virtually tied the lowest recorded destiny participation in the entirety of D1 (145,000). A mere three weeks later and that number has been cut in half. D2 has now managed to cut D1's lowest ever participation in half, within 5 months of launch, across 3 platforms, to a record low of 77,800.

Bungie, PLEASE make a hunter's hood part of the cloak previews!

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:19 AM PST

It's kind of the most important part. Just... zoom out on the preview or something. Or make the screen roam with the cursor.

Shaders are one time use and I need to see how it's going to affect my frabjuous head parts!

EDIT / FUN FACT : I used all my brightdust to buy the Eververse cloak before I realized that it had a box thing on the hood -______-

Destiny is about an amazing Shared World Cooperative PvE Experience with PvP for shenanigans. Bungie, if you won't balance separately it's time to put PvE first again

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 04:57 AM PST

The crucible was always supposed to be a messy place. The whole premise is you take PvE loot meant for slaying Gods and shoot at each other.

I also want to talk about microbalance vs macrobalance

Microbalance is what hardcore PvPers like. What it comes down to in every single situation is making the players even as possible at all times so that PvP fundamentals, the stuff that takes skill, is what decides who wins.

Unfortunately this always pushes a game in a direction where variety is minimized and you see less abilities and unique perks and more boring weapons because at its heart microbalance is very boring. It's not meant to be epic or flashy or crazy. Competitve microbalanced PvP is all about "my aim/strafe/dodge is better when we are even" and not about big plays or having fun (as most people do, I understand it's fun for them)

Now macrobalance is what Destiny needs. Macrobalance is "Holy shit I just saw my teammate get vaporized by X epic thing, but that's okay because I have ability Y and weapon Z, so let's do this fellow God slayer"

It's where not every encounter is pure raw fundamental skill, and there's crazy shit going on, but at the end of the day everyone is powerful their own way and looking at the big picture everything is balanced.

This means sometimes somebody runs up on you and they just wreck your shit. Your primary wasn't going to win you that 1v1. And you know what? It's okay, because 20 seconds later you pull of a beautiful triple kill without a super or a teammate. Big picture balance, and no not every encounter is 100% raw sweaty skill and it's okay, it really is

Hardcore people don't like macrobalance, but that is where space magic thrives. That is where power fantasies thrive.

It's time to balance for PvE first Bungie, and before you ruin D3 or this franchise dies entirely :/

Bungie, Warframe announced buffs to all guns in PvE to bring them to the level of the top tier without nerfing top tier guns OR impacting PvP. Destiny should be able to do this as well.

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 06:35 PM PST

If you haven't heard of it, Warframe is a free looter shooter by Digital Extremes that, despite plenty of obvious differences, shares many similarities with Destiny.

DE just announced their biggest weapon rebalance yet, where they're making almost every gun relevant and fun to use in PvE:

https://forums.warframe.com/topic/916505-dev-workshop-weapons-mastery-ranks-and-stats/

Very notably they're doing this WITHOUT A) nerfing top tier guns, or B) touching the separately-balanced PvP. This is being met with near universal praise from both the PvE and PvP crowd, as it dramatically increases player choice in PvE while not upsetting the PvP meta. I can't think of many Destiny patches with this amount of excitement and potential behind it, especially sandbox updates.

Bungie, this free-to-play game can do it, and you can too. Balance guns separately for PvE and PvP, either with literally different stats or with mods that only work in one or the other. Make guns that are powerful and fun to use in PvE, and if need be restrict their use in PvP for balance reasons. If you go to buff something, don't always simultaneously bring down the current performers to create an artifical "flavor of the month" meta. When you do need to nerf, make it side grade rather than simply erasing the weapon from relevance.

Right now the PvE crowd dreads seeing PvP patch notes, and the PvP crowd knows whenever a fun PvE gun is added it will overturn the PvP meta. As Destiny's competitors are showing, it shouldn't have to be this way.

Going forward, I’d love to see more exotic + legendary weapon pairs like mida mini tool.

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:59 AM PST

This was one of D2 releases more interesting points in my opinion. It allowed you to have a pair of synergistic weapons, which not only emphasised the exotics strengths but also emphasised a specific play style. Plus as someone that loves theory crafting builds in destiny (or used to XD) the idea of building a playstyle around an exotic+legendary pair, or using it to enhance a specific skill tree was very attractive.

I'd love to see all exotics get a pairing eventually, but I would settle on getting a few more with unique effects. If perfect paradox interacted with helm of saint 14 I don't think I would ever take either off.

Super random, but I think we can all agree. If we can't have TLW back, can we at least have a trait on SOMETHING that gives us this animation for hand cannons?

I’m loving the system that allows direct purchase of faction gear after X amount of engram openings. Especially during time-sensitive gear like Iron Banner.

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 11:34 PM PST

I was actually able to get the whole outfit for not only my Titan, but my hunter too...in one week! Sure, the ornaments are a pain to grind and I don't have them all, but worth the extra appearance! Even PvP is more tolerable since I know the gear I want is within my grasp even after consecutive losses. M making progress no matter what. I like that. :)

Master Cartographer Emblem available this week

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:09 AM PST

Complete this weeks NF on Prestige to get your hands on the Master Cartographer emblem. CoO only, obviously.

It was already available for ~2 days a few weeks ago until the NF had to be changed due to an issue with clan engrams, so you might already have it. If not: go get it!

The strike itself isn't too bad on prestige, invis all the way to the end with a hunter if you're running into Time issues.

Khepri's Horn can activate Sol Invictus and Sun Warrior on the Siegebreaker perk tree for Sunbreaker

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:26 AM PST

When you use Khepri's Horn, deploying your barricade creates a singular flame pulse similarly to a Thermite grenade. This pulse does 80 damage in PvP, and if you are running the Siegebreaker tree on the Sunbreaker, getting a kill with it will create a Sunspot and and regenerate a chunk of your health (Sol Invictus). Furthermore, standing in this sunspot will decrease the cooldowns on your abilities (Sun Warrior) so you can use your grenade and melee abilities more.

I ran it all day yesterday in IB, and I landed the fire pulse a lot more than I would've thought. Pair it with solar weapons, and your Barricade will regenerate fairly quickly, especially with mods.

It's arguably the best Sunbreaker specific exotic as you don't have to sit on your super like you do with Hallowfire Heart.

I know that Bungie had a good reason for changing it, but I miss the original weekly/daily reset time

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 03:25 AM PST

I live in the eastern time zone, so reset would be at 4am/5am depending on the time of year. I liked getting up and completing some stuff before going to work. Change is good, of course, but having to wait until I get home from work isn't as much fun.

Do not self revive at the boss in this week's nightfall

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 12:22 PM PST

This has been a know glitch in this strike for a while but I've seen a couple people post that they've run into this today

If you self revive while at the boss you get teleported down to the bottom of the lift which shoots you into a killwall after the boss encounter has started

If you die let your teammate revive you... if you all die you may have to restart the nightfall

Destiny 2: Frequency of Trials Maps & Participation

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 10:18 AM PST

Hello!

I've done huge spreadsheets on a couple of things, one of them was the Trials Maps & Participation during D1. I've now made a similar thing for D2:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vQ3K1uDaV0I4kTL8R_0axDQKQChG8eAecEk4MOjewuaBMvS20Rhd-XhT06fPCGs6UNGRWvAA2pdij6e/pubhtml

Again, thanks to /u/FartSausage from destinytrialsreport.com for collecting and providing the data.

Note that there are still a empty cells, most notably the Flawless Number is missing until the second week of Season 2 because of API constraints. If the data will ever be made available somehow via the API and can be fetched, I'll update the spreadsheet. The data is divided by seasons, because individual seasons are pretty short, I just made the chart for the global overview.

There has been tons of dicussions about what the data shows (here for example today), so I don't want to repeat there here. I just want to provide a reference for future posts.

The spreadsheet will be updated every Tuesday at reset. Note that data for the previous week is still "preliminary" until the next week - some data "comes in late" and thus the stat may change again a little bit.

Please get rid of the "Less accuracy while in air" mechanic

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 11:12 PM PST

When a game about movement and being in the air in most of the time, makes your aim 50% worse in the air, just doesnt make sense. Yes i know the "casuals" from Josh Hammer himself, but at this point its more of just nonsense than actually getting the "upper hand" on someone and the other "having a chance" to fight back.

Here is a example of how bad it is atleast for me https://gfycat.com/ShyPowerlessEyas and that was from a little 3 mobility hunter jump Better example https://gfycat.com/BraveFreshEarthworm

The "trust" in game design that Bungie has lost with D2 will not be easily regained

Posted: 05 Feb 2018 03:24 PM PST

Up until recently, Bungie has commanded a lot of respect for their past games. Despite the issues with Destiny 1, it still had a lot of special things going for it even at launch. Knowing what Bungie had created in the past also gave the player base a level of confidence that eventually they'd fix things and get it right.

Now that Bungie has proven that given free reign they will actually ruin a game rather than save it, I have the feeling that a lot of us have lost that faith that Bungie will make the right decisions moving forward. That faith can only be restored through action, not promises.

A lot of us have moved on because we feel like we have nothing left for us in the game. Those of us who loved the lore were disappointing by the terribly juvenile story and writing. Those of us who loved PVP were disappointed by the terrible balance, maps, modes, and meta. Those of us who loved PVE were disappointed by the lack of feeling powerful and replayability. The game, as of right now, caters to absolutely no one other than the lowest common denominator.

So when promises are made, expect us to nod and say "ok" and take it with a humongous grain of salt. Because Bungie has failed repeatedly at proving that they know how to fix their own game, and the current roadmap feels like a desperate attempt to salvage it rather than exploring an actual vision for what the game could be.

The only way to have a twirl animation in Destiny 2

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 11:45 AM PST

Instead of adding cooldowns to lost sectors, add more major and ultra enemies.

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 11:42 AM PST

No one likes cooldowns, so here's what I propose: Turn cache codes into consumables and add difficulty that increases somewhat proportionally to how fast you do Lost Sectors.

Your first time vising a lost sector, you kill a bunch of enemies and then prepare to get the ultra. This is what you see. It's Primus Cal'aug. You kill him, and he drops a cache code which you have to pick up to be able to unlock the chest. This would solve the first issue: The same chest can't be opened multiple times if the cache code is a consumable.

You think you didn't get enough loot, so you go in the lost sector again. Could be any lost sector, but you chose the same one. Once again, you kill a bunch of enemies, and Primus Cal'aug comes back (from the dead?), along with his long lost brother, Secundus Cal'aug. Now you have to kill both of them to get the key, which is harder but you do it anyway, and you open the chest. This solves the second issue: The cooldown is no longer intangible. It is now one more tough enemy that stands in your way.

Still not satisfied, you do a third Lost Sector, same as before. But now you have to face Primus Cal'aug, Secundus Cal'aug, and Tertius Cal'aug. You reconsider your life choices and decide to not finish this LS, but you also consider bringing some people to help you out some other time. This solves the third issue: You have an incentive to bring clanmates/friends with you to do LS.

The most essential and fourth issue - why would anyone bother with intentionally increasing difficulty - is harder to solve, because that's an issue with Destiny 2 as a whole. No incentives. But this could perhaps make Lost Sectors less farmable as Bungie wants them, and without pissing everyone off.

Bungie, IB was a blast

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 09:12 AM PST

Just wanted to come on here and gush about my morning, and week with Iron Banner. I'm a decent player, kda around 1.5 if you dont count my abysmal start to d2 and adjustment to its pvp, so I wasnt sure if I would be able to get that melee/grenade kills ornament this week. I got the other four rather quickly, but was only at 53% yesterday.

So, I stayed up and played 3 hours last night, and ended at 73%. Woke up this morning, got an hour in before having to go to a meeting at work, which lasted a bit longer than expected..Got home needing 16% in 45 minutes and managed to get my chest ornament with 1 minute left! Ive had a blast the past two days trying to play crucible differently, its taken me out of my typical comfort zone. This was a great grind and something that had me on the edge of my seat for that entire match just trying to whack away and launch double nades on my titan at everyone I saw to get that final 3%.

Between playing with my 3 characters enough to complete the daily challenges, I got the IB ghost, ship, and full sets on all the classes this week. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Without a doubt, Id say this was the most fun Ive had in pvp since year 1 with my hawkmoon and gave me a legit reason to log on daily, stay up late and push myself to grind for what I wanted.

Nightfall Solo Guide: Savathun's Song

Posted: 06 Feb 2018 10:08 AM PST

After a long week of beating my head against this strike, the guide to playing Savathun's Song solo is complete. It joins the others at https://bigflake.com/destiny2/savathuns-song.html .

In addition to the usual walkthrough, this guide includes a "boss damage math" section that explores what it takes to advance through the different phases of the boss fight, e.g. how many grenades, rockets, and scout rifle shots you need.

I have to admit that, unlike the other strikes, I did not successfully complete this one. I got close enough that I believe the strategies are sound -- which is to say that I had sufficient opportunity for the bad ideas to make themselves known and be corrected -- and given another day or so I think I could have landed this one.

This strike, more than any other, has driven home just how much better players like Esoterickk and Modern Tryhard are than I am.

On one of my best runs, after playing this for more hours than I care to think about, I shot the crystal that starts the boss fight with 8:31 left to play. Esoterickk's Striker Titan video from week 15 uses the same gear and approach -- his videos have been the starting point for the guides -- but when he shoots the crystal he's got 14:43 on the clock. Seven minutes later he's done. And he's not even breathing hard.

(That specific run taught me that the penultimate phase is 20%, and the final phase is 15%, rather than the other way around. I lost the better part of a minute trying to sort things out while dodging the damn tracking darts, and died attempting a desperate run with the orb while the Handmaidens were up. There's no better teacher than failure, and I did a lot of hard learning this week.)

This strike is incredibly annoying to run solo. Top reasons:

  1. The two-Shrieker dunk. Across dozens of runs I think I survived the dunk twice. (Maybe I should make "I Survived the Two-Shrieker Dunk" T-shirts?) There's a pattern to the Shriekers, but it has a random element, and I haven't found a tell. If an Acolyte was hiding nearby, you'll probably die before the dunk, and lose about 75 seconds.
  2. The room before the two-Shrieker dunk. Playing hide-and-seek with Ogres and Acolytes is incredibly annoying.
  3. The one-Shrieker dunk. I can kill the Revenant Knight about half the time. The rest of the time he survives with a sliver of health, then stands next to the Shrieker and heals behind a wall every time I scratch him.
  4. The six-crystal room with the Revenant Acolytes. You're in a narrow corridor with hard-hitting Acolytes in front and two hard-charging Knights behind. For some reason this room seemed to kill me a lot.

On a related note, I've re-evaluated my prior recommendation to spec for Resilience when in a strike with Momentum. Recovery doesn't affect how quickly healing begins, but it does affect how quickly the health bar fills in. If you're expecting Momentum to heal you through sustained incoming fire, the refill speed matters. I'm not convinced that it would actually make a difference -- the damn Shriekers are going to get you either way -- but it's something to consider.
