So glad Civ VI implemented gossip, I don't know what I would do without this information.

World Wars are back!

Now any Alliance with another civ creates automatic Open Borders and Defensive Pact.

When I got Scotland to follow me in a Joint War against Spain, I accidentally caused Spain's ally Japan to join in a war against me and Scotland. Suzerain city-states joined the slaughter too.

Now I need to remember to check if a civ has alliances before I attack. Having fun with R&F.

Why were these in the Rise & Fall trailer if they're not in the game....

Most underrated new feature in R&F

Posted: 11 Feb 2018 04:58 PM PST

The Spec Ops unit. Jesus I love it. With the recon promotion that gives you +20 combat strength they're on par with other end game units, have 2 range, really good mobility (fully upgraded they have 3 movement + ignores all terrain cost except river crossing), can move after attacking AND they have STEALTH. Not to mention their ability to paradrop and target support units.

Before R&F I'd almost never make recon units after locating all enemy players, and certainly never to use them in combat, but now I find myself spamming rangers the moment they become available so I can get them upgraded to level 3-4 by the time I get spec ops. In my current game I have 2 level 6 spec ops army units and they are fucking invincible.

Rise and Fall- Here's a list of what gives you points towards a golden age

Posted: 10 Feb 2018 08:15 PM PST

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bcghYw_lk2vbBHdQV4T73C-gUWV5bq_McQjMGeoWN38/edit?usp=sharing

If you're hitting the end of an era and are desperate for some extra points to avoid a dark age, or push yourself over into a golden/heroic age, this is the list you were looking for.

The Unique ones seem like the best to hang onto if you can-- unique unit, building, district, and tile improvement are all worth a base of 4 points, so if you can buy it, that's a fast hit.

First person to fly is a whopping 5 points, so that also can be a fast hit assuming you're ahead on science.

(yes, I posted this earlier, but it got surprisingly little traction, so I'm reposting with a better title)

Well, England is officially shit now

Posted: 11 Feb 2018 11:19 AM PST

England has lost its unique ability to stack trade routes from having both a Royal Navy Dockyard and a Commercial Hub in Rise & Fall. Firaxis, please give stacking back to England.

England's extra trade routes allow for lots of different, interesting, and unique strategies in the vanilla game. The new alliance rules, and some of the other new rules, would have opened up even more possibilities with England's extra trade routes.

For example, sure, England can have lots of coastal cities, but with those extra trade routes, England can also build powerful core cities (by running routes internally from its biggest cities) or become a cultural or science powerhouse (by running trade routes internationally) or get all the gold (which you need to pay for redcoats, museums and archaeologist). That all really fits with England being not only a naval power, but also an industrial and commercial powerhouse. The extra trade routes also synergise really well with cultural victories, given you can use trade routes to boost tourism, and to improve diplomatic relations (allowing you to get open borders, which also boosts tourism). The RND's other benefits are too weak and situational. The RND being a half-price district is good; but the RND's buff to your navy is kinda limited (+1 movement, and few extra GA points across your empire); and the extra gold on foreign continents is small (+2) and very situational. They are nice bonuses, but the core strength of the RND is the trade route stacking. The extra loyalty England gets from RNDs in R&F is a good buff given England's 'settle in foreign continents' thing is made harder by the new loyalty rules. But that's not a very strong buff if England also then loses its trade route stacking - it's one step forwards, two steps back! I don't think England's RND would have been overpowered if it had kept its stacking in R&F (even with the new alliance system), particularly as England would now need to build a lighthouse and market to get those TRs. At most, England would have gone from a 'mid-tier' civ to a 'strong' (but certainly not 'top' or 'god' tier) civ. C'mon guys! Give England a break!

Guess you have to play Asspounder if you want to trade

In what universe do I have troops on their borders?

Accidentally got an alpha build of the expansion and was unable to play for a 2 day sea voyage =(

Posted: 11 Feb 2018 02:42 AM PST

(sorry if its a known issue, i havent had internet for a few days now) So there i was, a sailor on my free time browsing the internet and saw that the new expansion has launched. As we were in a finnish port i had unlimited 4g data and bought/downloaded it immedately. Didnt have time to play tho, maybe tomorrow i thought.

So the next day at sea after work i got around to my laptop and opened civ. It was horrifying, the opening cinematic was barely rendered and the audio from the regular cinematic was playing in the background making it a huge mess. When the game opened i didnt see anything about a new expansion, just a new backdrop. checked DLC and it said "(WIP) Expansion 1". Checked the new leaders and they had all placeholder images and texts. Also trying to start the game as any of the new leaders crashed it immediately.

Now i cant play for an extra few days as i have limited internet in europe and well not be back in finland for at least a few more days. Fuck my life Heres an imgur album for anyone interested: https://imgur.com/a/xc7Sy

Custom map creation tutorial - my approach

Posted: 11 Feb 2018 02:59 PM PST

I make quite the few maps, even if I don't post most of them anywhere. The creation I am most proud of. As I get more and more busy with University and adult life I have decided to post a sort of tutorial for others to follow my steps if they choose to. This guide is not super detailed, it is rather intended to showcase the approach and order of steps I use to make maps. I have only made maps for Civ 5. Although this guide could technically work for Civ 6 as well, the new WB is still a catastrophe.

I have tried using a few shortcuts every once in a while, but honestly the best results come from just doing it all manually. The results are way better. This is what I do when I make a map:

  • get a template that you want to base the map off of. (for example: take a screenshot of google maps, crop it accordingly)

  • Decide on the size you want your map to be. The dimensions X by Y. The exact dimensions will not be set in stone just yet, just decide on the general size.

  • Launch World Builder, create a blank snow-map with the dimensions you decided on in the previous step. Take a screenshot.

  • Open the screenshot in your choice of photo-editor, make the white space (snow) transparent. Now you have a grid. Add the map-template as a second layer and scale both the template and the grid to your liking.

  • Now you have to make some tough choices. There are probably certain areas where you won't have enough space between tiles to make some of the shapes you want. Crop, edit, move, paint over the template map to make it work for the problem areas. I often resize certain areas that are geographically more interesting at the expense of less interesting areas. If it is done well nobody notices the morphed dimensions, and even so... making some things fit a hex-grid is tough. Keep in mind that mountains will be dead-space that is unusable for civs... so a mountain chain splitting a peninsula might look fine on paper, but in game the space next to the mountains will look smaller than expected. (these are all examples why such shortcut-tools often lead to poor results, unless you are planning on making an enormous map)

  • Now the busy-work starts. Create a blank ocean map in the dimensions you want in WorldBuilder according to the template-plan you created. Now you paint the map by hand. I start with the coastline, fill in the landmasses. Don't bother with terrain features just yet. (Toggle world-wrap if you need to under Miscellaneous options) Now you need to see if there are any areas that end up looking worse than it seemed on your template. Don't be afraid to freestyle, try out different things, see what works. If you realize that you need more space, you can still change the map size. You can add one or two more hexes to the overall map size by using the "Resize" option on the top toolbar. Be aware that once you pass a certain point WB doesn't allow you to add another row/column of hexes. (I am not sure what the threshold is, but somewhere by 80 tiles it stops working iirc) If you want to make a very large map I would suggest choosing about 5-10 more hexes than the plan you made when generating the blank map, so you have the space if you need it.

  • Now that you have the shapes that you want, paint in the hilly terrain, then the mountains. Be aware of what I mentioned earlier with mountains changing the feel of the space you have available. Don't block off any areas accidentally. Then you can add forest, jungle, marshes, atolls, natural wonders, etc. I normally do not place any resources, I turn on randomly generated resources which increases replayability and saves a lot of work.

  • Last step is to add rivers. This is a pain in the ass. I use this excellent interactive map to get a feel for the major and minor rivers in every region. Sometimes a river is used as a border which can cause some confusion. You can also get the names of the rivers from the natgeo map and google them, it sometimes makes the flow clearer. Be aware that man-made canals are also included in the natgeo-map. You will often need to simplify the shape because there is never enough space. Oh and very important: If you make a circular river the game will crash upon trying to load the map.

I hope this is understandable and helps some people make some quality maps. It is time consuming to make something worthwhile, just as any other modding thing. Good luck. Feel free to ask questions in the comments or add further tips.
