Free Miiverse

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 10:51 AM PST

Happy New Year everybody! And as everyone knows, a New Year is a new opportunity to get rid of old bullshit. That bullshit in this case is Lylat Battlefield. Miiverse is better than Battlefield. We need to replace it. Here are my main points: 1) Battlefield's shape is flawed and inferior. 2) Miiverse doesn't have images anymore 3) Miiverse's different attributes nerf top tiers hard.

Before I start, to clarify, Miiverse is identical to Battlefield in height and a tiny bit thinner in width. Here is Esam's vid that explains this more in detail (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oBDEKJB7q1g)

For 1, Battlefield's bottom section is flawed. It really is. The slant gives alot of character unnecessary junk to their recoveries such as Rosalina, the PK kids, Little Mac, Corrin, and really a handful of the cast. Recovering below the slant of the stage is incredibly difficult and even if you get there, the ledge is too hard to sweetspot and 2-frames are simply too easy to get. In Miiverse, you get an easy route to the edge with a bunch of open space. The space below the stage can help one punish greedy edge trappers above and give a safe space to stall. Another big disadvantage of Battlefield's lower section is well, its existence. This can give your opponent stupid easy kills if you miss the tech, and we already have enough of those in Smash 4.

For 2, after RipMiiverse in November, the main issue with Miiverse being illegal, the background images, is removed and is no longer a problem.

For 3, here are some examples of how Battlefield nerfs top tiers. Diddy Kong's recovery is overall just nerfed as he has no more wall to wall cling and pimping barrels is much easier. Sheik no longer has wall cling and her edgegaurds are much less potent given a ceiling to ceiling tech on. Just watch Sheiks at Town vs Sheiks at Battlefield and you will se what I'm talking about. Sonic and Lucario can no longer hug the wall during recovery. ZSS gets a big nerf with the introduction of Miiverse. You can gimp ZSS's tether recovery much easier since if you hit her when the tether is detracting, she cannot tech, and if you hit her horizontally below the stage, she is literally just dead. Up b will go nowhere and that's a dead Samus. Additionally, as the MV platforms are much bigger than in BF, her ladder combo is less viable as sharking underneath with U air is heavily nerfed. And most importantly, Cloud gets nerfed big time. Since he can no longer hug the battlefield wall, gimping him is much easier. If you get him under the stage he has no opportunity to recovery as climhazzard doesn't sweetspot ledge and has no horizontal abilities. Once perfected, this could be Cloud's worst stage by far and he could potentially go down on the tier list.

So yeah, Miiverse is overall just better than Battlefield. My suggestion is that we replace BF with MV instead of just adding MV to the stage list to avoid giving ladder characters an even better position in the meta. What do you guys think?

Edit: I have read the comments down below, amazing feedback. What would probably be best is if both stages were legal. It could become a counterpick like Dreamland and if someone strikes BF, they strike MV. I will probably make a SFW and refined version of this article later. If anyone here works for Smashboards, or has an inside man, send this to them please.

GENESIS 5 - Why the drop in attendance?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 01:59 PM PST

Kind of curious about this because it's common across multiple games. Emergency reg stops tomorrow, so these numbers probably won't change significantly, so you have:

Melee - 1300~ Entrants, representing a 20-25% drop in attendance from GENESIS 4 (1700)

Smash 4 - 650~ Entrants, representing a 35%-40% drop in attendance from GENESIS 4 (1000)

Smash 64 - 120~ Entrants, representing a 30-35% drop in attendance from GENESIS 4 (185)

The only game that seems to have benefited in the year timeline was Rivals of Aether, which went from around 100 to around 150. SFV dropped a flat 50%.

Melee held on the best, but it's still a two year trend downwards, where last year's justification for the lack of growth/drop seemed to be the reasonable argument that there was no way to match G3's hype. However, now it's dropped a significant amount further.

Is it the new venue location or shifting interest? I can see why Wii U might drop, - Frostbite is quickly becoming a big venue for the game sitting not far in entrant numbers pre-reg, but that wouldn't account for that game's total drop, and doesn't account for Melee's drop since as far as I know it has no nearly placed major events that might stifle travel by splitting attendance.

Introducing the SoCal Smash League, a community team up to build and improve the SoCal Smash scene!

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 12:43 PM PST

Hey everyone Happy New Year!

SoCal Smash League!

What is the SoCal Smash League?

The SoCal Smash League (SCSL) is a collaborative effort to connect various SoCal events and organizations together to promote the SoCal Smash scene. SoCal Smashers will be able to compete and stack themselves against other Smashers in their skill level to become the champion of their division.

Each organizations will be innovating and activating ideas to make everyone attending their weekly have an enjoyable time and experience. This can range from amateur bracket, free food, raffle prizes, discounts, and more.

With the SoCal Smash League, you don't need to be a ranked player or place top 3 at your weekly to be rewarded. No matter what your skill level is, we want everyone to enjoy themselves and have a good time.

The SCSL starts today with Mega Smash Mondays which has no venue fee for new players!

Here are the organizations in the league:

https://twitter.com/2GGaming
