Week of HRX and the Smite World Championship Discussion and Hype Megathread!

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 01:19 PM PST

It's that time of the year again, or rather the first day of the year? HRX begins in two days and we'll see a load of excellent teams from all over the world playing against each other. We'll finally get to see the Top NA teams face off against the Top EU teams, assuming the NA and EU can take care of the other regions, which is not guaranteed. Let's run through all the teams and their status going into the tournament.

For the purpose of making the schedules more clear, I'm going to assume the LG, NRG, Obey, and Elevate each win their first game against the other regions. This is not me discounting the other regions, LATAM as a whole has been rapidly improving and Scylla Esports look far better than I ever imagined. One of these teams could easily knock off a team from NA or EU.

North America

eUnited:

Player Role
Benji Solo
Screammm Jungle
Venenu Mid
PolarBearMike Support
PandaCat ADC

The roof for this eUnited squad is high. Each player is considered to be one of the best at their positions, with Benji being a top Solo laner in NA. Ever since the addition of PolarBearMike during the Summer Split, this team has been nearly unstoppable. PBM brought whatever this team needed to start winning again. They dominated Trifecta during Super Regionals, and they beat their scrim partner LG in the Finals 3-2. Screammmmm stopped playing Arachne has shown why he deserves to be in the SPL, with great showings on Ravana, Thor, Camazotz, and Nemesis. As the top seed from NA, they start with a Bye. They're most likely to face Scylla Esports or Nocturns, and then the Winner of the (likely) Obey v. Elevate set. This eUnited squad not only is loading with talent, but they probably have the easiest path to the Finals barring some unexpected event.

Luminosity Gaming:

Player Role
Aquarius Solo
Mask Jungle
Baskin Mid
JeffHindla Support
BaRRaCCuDDa ADC

The fan favorite BaRRaCCuDDa will be leading his team into HRX. Luminosity is the second seed coming out or North America after losing 2-3 to eUnited at Super Regionals. Just because they're the second seed, does not mean they don't have the potential to win it all, however. BaRRaCCuDDa is considered one the top hunters in the SMITE scene for reason, we have seen him single handily carry games, and we've also seen the each other team member contribute to LG's victories. Mask and Aquarius have combined incredibly well recently, and they were the ones carrying LG against SSG in Game 5 of that iconic Super Regionals Set, and everybody knows just how talented Baskin and JeffHindla are (if you don't know, they're very good). They'll be playing Scylla Esports out of OCE during the first set on Wednesday, and if they win that they'll likely play NRG in the quater finals in a Bo3, if LG manages to win that one, they'll likely face off against the Number 1 EU team in RivaL. Both RivaL and NRG have had LG's numbers in recent sets, with BaRRaCCuDDa and JeffHindla never beating either team in a set.

Europe

Team RivaL

Player Role
DeathWalker Solo
iceicebaby Jungle
Wlfy Mid
Kalas Support
Vote ADC

This is a confusing team. They looked great during DreamHack and reached the finals, losing an insane set to Team Dignitas. Hopes were high heading into the Fall Split, most people thought they would finish in the Top 2, but that didn't happen. RivaL barely qualified for Super Regionals, but once they arrived in Atlanta, there was no doubt that they deserved to be there. They dominated Team Dignitas 3-0 and then dominated Obey 3-1. They looked like the best team in the World, if not the best team to ever play Smite, during Super Regionals at least. The contrast between the Online performance and LAN performance is unreal. If the typical RivaL LAN team shows up, they can win the World Championship. They have the potential to beat NRG, LG, or any other team that might challenged them. They, like eUnited have a bye, and they're likely to open up against the Winner of the (likely) Entity vs. Black Dragons game and then play the winner of the (likely) LG vs. NRG game. While many believe that RivaL lacks any superstars, it's important to remember that DeathWalker is on this team. DeathWalker has been an absolute monster. For my money, he's the top solo laner in the world right now, and he is more than strong enough to carry his team on his back alone--but he typically doesn't have to. RivaL is strong enough that their synergy overpowers other teams.

Obey Alliance

Player Role
Xaliea Solo
CaptainTwig Jungle
PrettyPriMe Mid
EmilZy Support
Ataraxia ADC

Obey had a rocky season. They were on top of the world during the Spring Split, finishing 1st in the SMITE Masters LAN. Then they regressed a tad, finishing Second during the EU SPL Summer Split. But, during Dreamhack, Obey was eliminated by RivaL during the Semi-finals. ManiaKK left the team to join NRG, and all hope seemed lost for Obey. But, Xaliea joined the squad, enabling this group to pick up right where they left off. They dominated the Fall Split, beating Team Dignitas with Kuzenbo jungle (seriously, that happened, and Obey dominated). They beat Elevate in a wild Semi-Final set during Super Regionals, and lost 1-3 to RivaL. Right now, Obey has a super strong and smart team. EmilZy and Hayzer have made excellent strides in improving this team's strategic play and picks and bans. PrettyPriMe is a strong mid-laner with a wide god pool, and CaptainTwig has god-given talent. Ataraxia is another strong ADC who enjoys farming and waiting for the big damage numbers of the late game. Obey opens up against Entity and then will likely play Elevate in the Semi-Finals in what should be an exhilarating game. If Obey wins there, they'll likely face EUnited in the Semi-finals. This Obey squad, dispite having some inconsistencies in their play, has enough potential to beat RivaL, Elevate, Eunited, and Entity, expect the number 2 seed out of EU to make some noise.

NRG

Player Role
ManiaKK Solo
Adapting Jungle
Yammyn Mid
iRaffer Support
emilitoo ADC

NRG is a team that needs no introduction. They won the last two SWCs and look to repeat here this year. Despite a poor Season 4, NRG showed up at Super Regionals. They went 5-0 in the Wild Card, including an impressive win over Elevate. Each player is one of the top players in their respective roles. Emilitoo still looks like the top hunter in the world, and each of the other players are at least top 3 in the world at their positions. Adapting is Adapting, his mechanical ability is off the charts, he can single-handily carry his team with his Fenrir or Thor or Serqet or any other assassin. NRG is the X-Factor in this tournament. If they show up, they could push all the to a third straight SWC victory. If they don't, they could get an early exit.

Elevate

Player Role
N0Numbers Solo
Cherryo Jungle
DeathPanter Mid
Dardez Support
Jermain ADC

Elevate surprised a lot of people during the fall split. To be frank, they've had a lot of poor performances in their history in the SPL, but it seems like they've finally put it all together. Jermain, Dardez, DeathPanter, Cherryo, and N0Numbers all seem to clicking at the right time. Their 3 Gaurdian 2 Hunter comps had a lot of success at Super Regionals, but that strategy doesn't seem as viable with some nerfs to core hunter items in recent patches. Regardless, Jermain is still one of the top hunters in the world, being feared by other hunters globally. Dardez has a plethora of unique support picks that he might bring out, Nox anyone? Elevate has the right combination of cheese and strategy that they push the limits of Smite to the extreme, making them one of the most fun teams to watch. They open up against Black Dragons and, if they win, will likely play Obey Alliance.

Non NA/EU

Scylla Esports

Player Role
Kayo Solo
Envisionise Jungle
Shred Mid
Torreyskiez Support
MingyuSeo ADC

Mingyu's Minions. This team formed from the ashes of the LG Dire Wolves, with the young Mingyu leading the way. I'll be honest here, I was astonished with how quickly this team came together, and their win over Legacy Esports in the OCE Finals was impressive to say the least. This team is good, but they're inexperienced. They open up against the NA LG, and their inexperience does not match up well with Luminosity's butt-load of experience. Even still, there is enough talent their that they could pull off the upset.

Nocturns Gaming

Player Role
Beltway Solo
Sm1tero Jungle
N0zq Mid
Zaionsis Support
Noitulover ADC

Nocturns has a chance because of their experience. Most of this largely Argentinian team comes from the Isurus squad of old. Many people don't follow this region, but might still know N0zq, or N0zwer, from his electric performance on Ra and Thoth at the previous Smite World Championship, where he helped knock off ALG. Nocturns is matched up against NRG, a tough team to play for anyone, but with veterans like N0zq and Beltway, there's a good chance that make it to Day 3.

Entity Gaming

Player Role
Parad1ddle Solo
iApex Jungle
SirEclipse Mid
MashuPoi Support
Kamiru ADC

I know very little about this team outside of the fact that they beat a strong Team Viral in the SEIL Regional Championship. If /u/Snufflebox wants to write an overview for this squad, I'll happily post it here.

"The story of Entity Gaming is a true underdog in every meaning of the word. They were considered a mid-level team in the SEIL up until the 3rd split, where they ended up finishing first, booking their spot in the SEA Regionals. They were up against the most dominant team in the region, TeamViral, and it didn't look good for them in the start. They were down 0-2 in a best of five, but after fighting hard, they managed to overcome TeamViral with a reverse sweep. Contrary go popular belief, the team is not from China, and they have actually managed to best every Chinese team they have gone up against. Only time will tell, if they can clear the name of Asia in international Smite. (Also sikhsukh couldn't make it due to visa issues, so he will be replaced by TeamViral's old support player, MashuPoi)"

—Shout to Snufflebox for helping out!

Black Dragons

Player Role
Kliz Solo
oShip Jungle
Nann Mid
PIBE Support
MarcelZ ADC

This team showed up in Season 4. We last saw them at the Smite Summer Finals LAN where they were knocked out early by Team Dignitas. A few months before that, however, they played Team Eager in the SMITE Masters LAN. In that set, they actually won a game, shocking the world. MarcelZ solo'd Zapman and oShip showed why he held the top spot in Ranked. They'll play their first game against Elevate, and this squad probably has the best chance of any to beat an NA or EU team.

Gods who need visual updates going into 2018.

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 04:57 PM PST

By no means are visual updates necessary to gameplay or the game's integrity or w/e, just a discussion.

In 2017 we saw a few visual updates. Hi-Rez took their time with releases instead of throwing one at us every month, so we got more thought out designs and kits. As for 2018, we can't be sure if they'll remodel or update anyone, but below is a list of the gods who could really use one.

Major Remodel

  • Isis: Her model is extremely old and still part of Smite's old art style. Her proportions are also quite odd and her overall clothing is very...plain. As a highly worshiped goddess and one of the Egyptian goddesses who isn't an animal, she could use something much better.
  • Sobek: Depending on whether Hi-Rez wants to keep him animalistic or change him, Sobek still needs an update in some way. His model has odd textures here and there and overall could just use...something. I like his animalistic nature as opposed to someone similar like Kuzenbo, it just needs to be redone.

Minor Remodel or Updates

  • Apollo: His model, like Isis, is old and plain. He is a god of light, music, and the sun, yet it doesn't really show too well visually. Personally his tier 2 is a better fit for him. He's also clearly meant to be attractive...but in game he isn't whatsoever.
  • Cupid: Doesn't need a major remodel into a teen like people want, that would remove his character. What he needs is minor updates to make him cuter, because right now he's an actual nightmare watermelon.
  • Ares: Those forearms.
  • Anhur: Needs new fur and possibly new armor, very basic looking.
  • Hun Batz: His fur needs to look like actual fur, and his animations need some updates here and there. He moves like a PS2 character.

Touch-Ups

  • Fenrir: Simply needs new fur and textures.
  • Neith: They need to replicate the hair she has in her CGI appearances, with braids and jewelry. Her hair in game is just a playdoh bowl.
  • Hel: Same as Neith, needs texture updates and new hair on Dark Stance. Make her look like Hand of The Gods Hel, where her eyes are blackened and cracked. Maybe even make light stance glow like in her promotional art.
  • Mercury: His face.
  • Ne Zha: His face is alien, and his body is honestly way too long and tall.
  • Jing Wei: Her face is similar to Ne Zha, makes no sense in certain animations.

Optional Remodels/Updates

  • Ares: A lot of people seem to want him to be remodeled entirely, or even switch his kit and make him a warrior.
  • Hades: He never technically received a remodel, they just switched his skins and made Nightmare Hades the default. He doesn't really need a remodel personally.
  • Erlang Shen: He was one of the rushed releases of 2016 and it was kind of sad honestly. They released him and he had the wrong textures, and his design was very clearly rushed or uninspired. He looks very dull, not really the "illustrious sage" he's supposed to be.

If I missed anyone let me know.

It's now 2018, can we finally get some decent West Coast Servers?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 01:22 PM PST

Title . It's becoming a struggle for me and my friends to continue to play this game when we suffer 100-150 ping just because we live in California. Even smaller games like Battlerite have decent west coast servers.

Was Cerberus always there?

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 08:57 AM PST

Calling it now. The final episode of the odyssey will review Cerberus

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 12:43 PM PST

HiRez keeps saying that there is some kind of ending to the odyssey but are being secretive. Initially it was thought an Ares rework into a warrior, but I have a feeling its going to be a Cerberus reveal.

Makes sense right? They said the next reveal would be a HRX and why not finish the odyssey story by revealing a hype god!

Reminder of a small feature in Dota 2 that I would love to see in Season 5.

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:37 PM PST

In Dota 2 there is a Deserter system where if a teammate abandons, everyone in the game is allowed to leave without penalty.

You still loose, you still loose your TP, but you just dont get a 30 min deserter penalty, so you can reque instantly.

This way you dont have to wait till you can surrender, or even worse, play a 30 minute 4v5 game because some of your teammates think they can still win.

This system would be amazing to have, I have wasted so much time playing 4v5s that were bound to fail, just because I dont want a 30 minute timeout before I can start another game.

Im on my phone and its 3 am, so I probably could of explained it better, but anyone that has played dota 2 knows what I am talking about and know how good it feels to have this feature.

EDIT: This might be too much to ask, but it would be nice to hear from someone at Hi-Rez. Maybe there is a reason why a system of this sort has not been implemented?

A quick theory about the datamined Hades skin...

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:27 PM PST

For those who don't know, datamining has revealed that there is an upcoming Hades skin. This skin has been butting heads with the most recent Medusa skin for a place in the Odyssey, as both of them seemed to have been planned at some point (Hades' skin actually had a placeholder in the live server, IIRC), but, in the end, Medusa's skin was released, and Hades' skin is still there. Here goes the theory: I think this is a lore-accurate skin for Hades, to be matched with the Cerberus release.

The latest datamining post I linked above shows that Cerberus is the next god, as he was datamined for a long time now, right after Discordia. It would make sense for Hades to get a skin to match his dog, and what a better skin than a lore-accurate one, since people asked for him to be remodeled into that for so long?

Full Season Reward Win-Count Issue

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 08:52 AM PST

So i decided to play Ranked for the Full Season Reward (The Limited God Skin at 75 Wins and the frame at 150 wins).I already had 55 Wins, cuz I played Ranked in spring split, summer and fall split occasionally. I'm stuck at 55/75, 55/150 Wins even when i'm winning. i made 2 games of ranked today and it doesn't count for the 75 or 150 wins. i won both of my duel matches. could you explain me that? there are 28 more days to get the full season reward, so why am i not able to finish my last 20 or 95 matches? it should be on 57 now, not 55. I redeemed my Fall split recall skin (I had 23/25 wins, before i played ranked today) but not any count on the full season reward? i already submitted a support ticket, but I would like to know, if there's some information about the split end, if there are more ppl who are experiencing the same issue etc.. i was not in a hurry, cuz i thought i have 28 more days. there's no in-game information about this.

Chaac QoL change/redesign idea

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 02:01 PM PST

It's annoying how many times I have accidentally teleported to my axe when I'm chasing an enemy down, cause I forgot about the axe.

I thought it'd be interesting if, after using his 1, while the axe is out there, his 2 gets disabled. Now, you can press 1 to teleport, activating your 2 automatically (same as what happens now except you would press 1)

If you need to use your 2 without teleporting, you can still spam 2 till the axe disappears, hitting the enemy you're chasing as soon as the axe is gone.

Plus, if you need to get away desperately, you can use your 1 to throw it, and then keep spamming 1 again to teleport as soon as it lands, instead of accidentally using it on the spot

What do you guys think? Too drastic of a change? Is it not annoying enough? Just curious what everything thinks

Rankeds not counted for the limited loading frame

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 07:26 PM PST

I've won 5 rankeds today (starting from the match 381780501) and none of them was counted for the limited loading frame. Check the images linked.

https://imgur.com/gallery/z33sw

First BIG bug of 2k18? I've already sent a ticket but no one answered yet. I should be at 147 now. It's very sad because I'm grinding to get that frame. Do someone has this bug too?

PS: if you see some error I'm sorry, English isn't my primary language.

Can we have 1v1 Hyper Joust instead of 5v5 "Ultra" Hyper Joust.

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:11 PM PST

Before you go "No one cares about motd", a lot of us actually do enjoy motds. Now, Why does 5v5 joust even exist? The map is too small for that. And when everyone is given 100,000 gold, the most matches end in less than 3 min. 1v1 is a lot more fun to play and last longer.

Posted: 01 Jan 2018 03:45 PM PST

I've been winning ranked games but the number isn't changing within the rewards tab. I'm stuck at 113 and would love to be able to get to 150 but kinda annoyed if it's not counting my wins (in Ranked Conquest)
