[Jan 26th-28th] EVO Japan 2018 Megathread - Everything You Need to Know

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 10:06 AM PST

General

What is EVO Japan?

EVO Japan, as the name suggests, is a part of the Evolution Championship Series (EVO for short). This is the place that will gather some of the strongest players in the world for each game that's represented in the lineup, and you're about to dive into 3 full days of almost non-stop high level competitive fighting game action, coming straight from Tokyo. EVO Japan is also the first time EVO ventures outside the United States, which is a major milestone in the history of this event and this brand, in addition to being one of the biggest fighting game tournaments of the year, as well as a major step in expanding and developing the Japanese FGC.

Originally this event was supposed to happen 5 years ago, in 2013, but sadly due to Mother Nature's involvement - EVO Japan was delayed indefinitely. So for a long time the fate of this particular tournament was in question, despite the reassurance following EVO 2013 that the event would still take place. Finally, last year, during the Finals day of EVO 2017 - the Cannon brothers and Joey "MrWizard" Cuellar (the founders of EVO) have officially announced that EVO Japan is making a comeback, and will indeed happen. And so... here we are.

The EVO staff has finished making final preparations, the clock is ticking down, and with just mere hours left until the kickoff - this is a perfect time to get all the infos you might need about the tournament in one place.

Where is EVO Japan being held?

Sunshine City complex, Higashiikebukuro, Toshima district, Tokyo, Japan

When does EVO Japan take place?

From January 26th to January 28th

Can we please get a Third Strike BGM pack in SFV?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:09 PM PST

I want to listen to Jazzy NYC 99 when fighting against Alex or Ken :(

Edit: I'm glad to see that a lot of people here love Third Strike's soundtrack too! Maybe if we make a lot of noise Capcom might give us what we want. Then again, we're missing a ton of Third Strike characters in SFV so I don't think they can give us every single track but here's to hoping they do!

How much longer should we wait until we are actually allowed to criticize the current FM system?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 11:33 PM PST

Just checking so the sub wont crucify me for it. A whole month? After the golden soldiers are out? It doesn't look like my opinion is going to change that much either way. Less FM to obtain + more events bound to FM spending (Including chances to get FM by gambling FM) = Basically events you cannot enter and content you cannot access in a reasonable amount of time. A waste, stuff you shouldn't even consider extra content since you wont be able to access most of it, especially if you get the characters with FM.

Even if you're a sucker like me who pays for character passes you'll still be unable to buy enough stuff to make the game look like an actual full game. I pretty much was able to afford every story costume and stage only because I'm on PC and was able to trainer my way through all the survivals.
The Monster Hunter extra battles is the first time I'm seriously thinking about letting an event pass because I'm afraid of not being able to afford something else in the future. It's sad that the game is basically encouraging me to NOT to participate, even though I'm someone who spends actual cash on this game yearly in character passes and costumes.
I can't believe I'm saying this but I'd rather go back to the way it worked last gen, just charge me something for the new update and give me some characters, stages and colors with no free2play tier grinding behind, fuck this current system.

So I would love it if you guys would check it out. Also please leave your cfns so I can practice. Thanks, Guys!

Arcade Mode not working

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:44 AM PST

Not sure if this is the best place to put this. If not, can someone point me in a better direction?

I am one of the casual players that was really looking forward to arcade mode. Except, I can't get past selecting my character - even the character select looks messed up!

I don't have any mods, SFV ran just fine before AE, I've reinstalled and verified my files. Anyone else having similar issues?

Consensus on Team Versus Mode Rules?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 07:40 AM PST

Last week I ran a free Team Battle tournament test run at my local, and there was quite a bit of debate on exactly what in-game rules should be used.

Some discrepancies that I remember are:

  • Best of 1 vs Best of 3 per player match-up
  • Meter carry over vs No meter carry over
  • Full life recovery after win vs Partial life recovery after win (latter only selectable in Bo1)

Is there an established rule set for this already? If not, what are your thoughts?

Juri VT2 discussion

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:22 AM PST

Hello everybody ! So here's the thing, I am actually writting a guide on Juri that you can find here : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SkEWZPAyzAkmV7VQ23eoHLqkNWxC7Oyby1GFw5-Wwew/edit?usp=sharing

And since VT2 came out recently I wanted to know if you guys found some stuff (Combos / punish / sequence / set-up) ? At this point almost anything goes for me . The more data we collect the more this guide will be useful for beginners and confirmed Juri's main . So far I just put some basic combos (two) from VT2 cancel and how the VT works . Lastly I wanted to start a part on "hard punishable moves" that I'm sure we could make much more important.

Karin VT2 discussion

What have you guys learned about the parry? Any good setups? Best combos out of it? Mix-ups?

So far I've learned it won't parry fireballs. I tried using it as a replacement for st.hp anti air but it doesn't work on akuma when he does the air fireball. From what I can tell it starts on frame 1 but I haven't labbed it super hard.
