Overwatch - How to play the objective on Hollywood.

How to play the objective on Hollywood.

I have over 500 hours on Mei, but I admit she is not in a good place. Here's some minimal changes that I think would help her a lot.

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 09:27 AM PST

I've played a ton of Mei, in fact over the last 6 seasons I have exclusively played Mei. I reached GM in season 6, and I came close in season 7. Mei is a very versatile hero, who can adapt to many team comps. The problem is that she is very difficult to play and learn. With the changes I have in mind I hope to make Mei more consistent and hopefully easier to pick up, while not making her more annoying to play against.

Ultimate - What is wrong

The main culprit is her Ultimate. The ability is horribly buggy, inconsitent and unclear.

Clarity

Let's start with clarity. Take a look at this image for example. The ultimate is placed slightly lower than the majority of the effect. This makes it very unclear which area it affects. This is a problem for Meis team, and an annoyance for the enemy team. On top of this, even if the ultimate is placed on flat ground, the vertical area is not shown at all. The ultimate is dome shaped, even though nothing suggests this. This means a flying character can be higher up towards the edge of the ultimate, while the same height might be affected near the center of the ultimate. This is also why it is effective to jump near the edge, because you will jump out of this dome.

Line of sight

This is just the start of it. The ultimate needs line of sight to affect the targets, even though the area does not show this in any way.

Example 1

Example 2

In Example 1 you can clearly see that because the ultimate is against a pillar, it does not affect the targets behind it, even though they are clearly within the area. In Example 2 it is clear just how inconsistent this is. Often times you throw your ultimate, and it lands next to some small object, which completely blocks her ultimate from hitting anything on that side. Other times enemies turn the corner just enough to get out of the area, probably to your and their surprise, as this is not shown in any way. It's infuriating to see enemies happily walk around in your ultimate.

Bugs

In this video you can clearly hear the ultimate spasm like crazy, after which is just disappears entirely. There was no D.va nearby who could have eaten it. While the disappearing doesn't happen often, the spasms do happen very often. Especially on the Payload, or any object that either moves, or doesn't have a flat area for the ultimate to land on. This is incredibly frustrating, as this gives the enemy so much time to run away. I've potentially lost many games because my ultimate refused to activate in time.

  • The ultimate disppears entirely when stunned/killed during the initial animation

I'm sure we've all heard of this by now, and it affect more heroes than just Mei. It is still incredibly frustrating to see your ultimate disappear mid air.

Ultimate - How I feel this can be fixed

Clarity

To make it more clear what area is affect by the ultimate, I want the actual dome to be clearly visible. I made a mockup here. Not only does this make it more clear what is in and out of the area, it also works thematically as it looks like a giant snow globe! While inside the area enemies get a frosty blizzardy effect on their screen, clearly showing they are being affect by the blizzard. All together this should make it much easier for enemies and friendlies to see who and what is being affected. Especially vertically, either flying targets or targets a floor above. Important is to not over do the effect, as we don't want even more visual clutter in a team fight.

Line of sight

This can be fixed in a more straight forward way. Simply remove the line of sight requirement. It makes very little sense, and only adds confusion. This could also allow for more creative ways of using the ultimate. Such as throwing it behind a wall while staying out of sight of enemies. Similar to what is being done with Zarya ultimates.

Bugs

The ultimate should activate as soon as it hits the floor. The little bounce only adds annoyance. This does not have to affect the small charge up time, as this could still be shown with Snowball flying upwards (as it does now).

Primary weapon - What is wrong

Left click

I think her primary fire is in a decent spot, the time to freeze feels fair, and doesn't cost a lot of ammo. However, in a team fights it can become very difficult to use. The freeze stops on the very first target it hits, even though the spray might suggest otherwise. This can lead to situations where enemies block line of sight to your target which prevents you from freezing them.

Right click

Once again, I feel like it is in a good spot. It deals a good amount of damage, especially when aimed well. Usually getting killed by it feels fair. However, running out of ammo at crucial moments is especially devastating for Mei.

There is also an issue with headshots in general, which I feel would be very difficult to fix. For many heroes turning around while getting frozen can be a very legitimate tactic. For example D.va and Roadhog can practically not be headshot from behind, especially because Mei is so small and low to the ground. These two examples are fair. However, let's take mercy as an example. Part of her wings count as hitboxes, often blocking a headshot. Similar examples can be found on other heroes. I feel this cannot be fixed, but it's something I wanted to bring up anyways.

Primary weapon - How I feel this can be fixed

Left click

Allow her spray to hit multiple targets at once. The visual shows it, so why should the effect not work? This would allow Mei to be more of a threat in team fights. It also rewards proper positioning, as getting a multi man freeze would be difficult, but incredibly rewarding. Edit: A lot of you have commented being able to freeze multiple enemies at once would be too strong. I see what you mean, but my counter argument would be that a situation like that would be highly unlikely. Holding 2 enemies long enough in your freeze to freeze them both would be very difficult. It takes 3(?) seconds of continuous fire to freeze 1 target, if 2 enemies stand close enough to eachother to both be hit for 3 seconds, they have bigger things to worry about. In any case, I feel it is worth testing. Perhaps a setting in custom games to allow for this?

Right click

Although I do not feel a change to her right click is required, changing the ammo from 25 to 20 would go a long way. The 2 extra shots this gives could mean the difference.

Other abilties

I feel her other abilities are in a great spot. Her wall is difficult to use, and takes a lot of getting used to. But once you realize how it determines where it will be placed, it can be a very effective tool in the right situations (Other than just blocking doorways).

Her cryofreeze is strong, and allows you to block many abilities. I do sometimes wish the hitbox was as large as the effect would suggest, to allow teammates to hide behind your more consistently. There's also the issue of using the freeze, but still getting hit. This is however an issue with lag in general in Overwatch (And practically any other game), so I don't feel it's fair to expect a fix.

TL;DR

Make her ultimate more clear and reliable. I made a mockup here. The effect should freeze what it suggests, instead of breaking on line of sight. The ultimate should open up the very second it hits the ground, to prevent it from activating late.

Allow her left click to freeze multiple targets at once, just like the effect would suggest.

Conclusion

All in all I think Mei is in a decent spot, but unfortunately she is plagued with bugs and clarity issues. Solving these issues (Without actually buffing any stats) would go a long way.

Please let me know what you think, and let me know any suggestions you might have.

McCree should have a "blowing smoke off his barrel" emote or highlight intro

Blowing smoke off a just-fired gun is one of the most iconic post-duel moves, how come McCree doesn't have any highlight intro or emote doing it?

Hi Blizzard! Can you please not spoil the results of games on the Overwatch League front page!?

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:07 AM PST

I go to the overwatch league website to watch the games. Sometimes, the headline will be something like

"TEAM X BEATS TEAM Y IN SURPRISE UPSET"

Welp, that is kind of annoying. That's literally the information I least want to see on the front page of the website where the VODs of those games are being hosted.

I can't imagine I am alone in this. At least hide these titles behind some kind of spoiler screen!

Ultimates like Tracer / Mei / Ana should not disappear with death

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 03:39 PM PST

I'm just talking about ultimates like Tracer, Mei, Ana and NOT Reinhardt or Genji.

Mei, Ana and Tracer should 100% have the change reverted. Simply having the projectile disappear in the middle of the air, or even when it's stuck to someone is a horrible punishment especially with all the random kills that can happen in the game. I agree with most of the changes of the new Ultimate system (because you couldn't be using your ultimate when you're low health or 1v6 anyway), but the projectile based ones feel cheesy.

It is still incredibly frustrating to see your ultimate disappear mid air.
