Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 01:08 PM PST

Please use this thread to discuss whatever you've been playing lately (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). As usual, please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.

Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Since this thread is likely to fill up quickly, consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts.

For a subreddit devoted to this type of discussion during the rest of the week, please check out /r/WhatAreYouPlaying.

Top Highlights from AGDQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) 2018 speedrunning marathon event

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 08:48 AM PST

Here's my annual highlight list of AGDQ 2018. Awesome Games Done Quick is a charity event organized by Games Done Quick where speedrunners all over the world gather together to raise money during a speedrunning marathon for a good cause. This year's main event was 7-day long and featured over 150 games and gathered about the same as last year - $2.2M for Prevent Cancer Foundation.

I made few categories and put the top highlights in there for your viewing pleasure. The categories are self-made so don't focus too much why a game is in a category, you should watch them all anyways.

If you only have time for a very few runs check out the ones I bolded out. They are pretty awesome.

Donkey Kong Country (Reverse boss order) ~50 min
Metroid ~25 min

Polish studio QLOC handling Dark Souls Remastered, switch port being developed in China

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:50 PM PST

While the remaster itself is being handled by QLOC, the Switch port has been reportedly handed off to an as-yet-unnamed studio in China.

There are reasons to be wary, as well as cheerful. The biggest is simply that Fromsoft isn't remastering the game, but a Polish studio called QLOC (and the Switch version is being developed in China). QLOC at least has a good track record, and much of the 'remaster' seems to be incorporating effects developed by Fromsoft for later entries in the series.

Statistics for Steam games released between 2017/12/25 to 2017/12/31

Posted: 14 Jan 2018 10:46 PM PST

G'day /r/games!

Here's an infographic I put together for the (rather unfortunate) games to release on Steam between the 25th and 31st of December last year: https://imgur.com/wwV2kMQ

Releasing around this time of year is, in all honesty, a recipe for disaster. I'm surprised that SCP: Secret Laboratory managed to do as well as it did as the titles that dared to release around this time last year didn't have a single one among them that had more than 100 users in them on average. There must be something to SCP though as it's still doing reasonably well, increasing its concurrent player count by 50% since it released.

The trending section is a lot more interesting though with Heaven Island Life making an appearance thanks to a key giveaway on a not-so-reputable site. Strangely they also put it on sale at the same time for the low low price of $0.5. I'm sure most people playing it thought got it for free.

We Were Here shot into fame on the back of SovietWomble's bullshitery video and has enjoyed a renewed interest from numerous players in the weeks since. This isn't the first game he's given a noticeable bump to either as Golf It! got a small bump when he featured it a couple months ago. Interestingly though his Far Cry 3 video either had a null or slight negative impact, at least as far as Steam players were concerned.

Anyone have a crack at some of these new releases?
