Theorycraft Thursday - Discuss Builds, Skills, Strategies, and More!

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 01:00 AM PST

Welcome to Theorycraft Thursday, a community-building, regularly occurring thread in the subreddit!

MMO veterans will know that Theorycrafting is the core of many discussions about this genre of games, and ESO is no different.

With the high level of variance in builds, skills, and stats, there's plenty of room for Theorycrafting, and we want to see what you have to share with the community on that front.

Have a build you've experimented with? A particular skill or set of skills that synergize well? A strategy for PvE or PvP that works to great effect? Share it here!

If you're new, you can also use this thread to ask questions about viable builds and skills as well!

As always, please keep in mind our rules on the sidebar, especially the one about 'no personal attacks, callouts, rude behavior, or other such disrespectful content'.

Disagree respectfully and know that everyone has different ideas and playstyles that suit them.

PSA: Changes to available game editions.

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 10:49 PM PST

The Gold Edition of the game has been discontinued and is no longer listed by online retailers*. Hopefully it's being replaced with an updated edition containing the current DLC not featured in a crown pack.

*Gold Edition is still listed on Bethesda's store page. https://store.bethsoft.com/the-elder-scrolls-online-gold-edition

The Tamriel Unlimited base game has been merged with the Morrowind upgrade to become the new base game, priced at $29. Evidenced by the Steam and ESO webpages.

Just wanted everyone to be aware of these changes, especially because the question about which edition to buy pops up a lot. Now we won't be able to suggest the original base game or the Gold Edition unless purchased via key resellers.

Interrupts, Casters, and You!

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:51 AM PST

Hi there! I just wanted to introduce you to the glorious game mechanic called "interrupt".

Are you wiping in Cradle of Shadows because Khephidaen is being a little bitch?

Are you stuck on a solo fight with a caster that is melting your face with their fire attacks?

Did Neloren in Darkshade Caverns just heal herself to full again? How dare she!

Also, why is it taking forrevvverrrr to clear the spider rooms in Spindleclutch???

No sweat, my pet! I have the solution for you: Interrupts.

What are those, you ask? Well ... literally ... they interrupt and cancel casts that take a few seconds to get off. You can usually tell that a cast is happening when the boss looks like it's having a seizure and starts glowing red around the edges. Or when there is a golden line from one caster mob to another. Or when that spider is gnawing on a corpse and healing itself, and you just hate spiders so much ... self-healing spiders are the worst, I tell ya! The worst!

There are several ways to smack those annoying mobs about and keep them from melting your face, or from healing themselves to full and making that battle last twice as long. You're there in the spider cave to get the sky shard, not take forever to kill one single spider. Ain't nobody got time for that!

Here are a few interrupts that are available to any and all players, regardless of your class choice:

  1. Bashing. You have to be up close and personal, hold down your BLOCK button, and quickly hit your LIGHT ATTACK button to smack the mob in the face with your conjured shield. Bam! No more self-healing spider! Take that! Edit: If bashing this way feels too clunky for you, it's 100% possible to use a different key bind; whatever makes it easier for you in the end.

  2. Crushing Shock. Do you have a destruction staff? Awesome! There's a skill called "Force Shock" that has 2 morphs. One of them is a ranged interrupt called "Crushing Shock". Which does an amazing job when you want to interrupt a caster while also not getting right up in their face. Just zap Crushing Shock and watch them not get that annoying spell off! Easy! This also sets the caster off balance and stuns it! Win/win in my book!

  3. Venom Arrow. Do you have a bow? Excellent! There is a skill called "Poison Arrow" that has 2 morphs, one of them "Venom Arrow". Use your bow for something more than light attack spams! Venom Arrow not only interrupts casters, but also sets them off balance and stuns them! Who'da thunk? Amazing!

So there you go! The next time you're mano-y-mano with that annoying caster/spider, use any of these abilities to show them what's up! Then loot their stupid caster or spider corpse and get on with your life so you can grab that sky shard, or finish that pledge/quest in half the time it took you before, without all the dying or starting over.

I now realize the problem with PUGs (mini-rant)

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 12:39 AM PST

Running through vet-Spindleclutch I. The healer and a dps just run through the entire dungeon only killing the bosses, so me and the other dps begrudgingly follow them. I'm tanking and we're on the final fight against the whisperer. One dps goes down, and the other dps doesn't bother to res him at all. So the healer goes down next. Remaining dps still doesn't res either of them. So I'm doing my best to stay alive, but I then fall. Then he finally dies, and he proceeds to blame me! We give it one more try and now the healer(I'm assuming they are together) doesn't do any healing so we all die. They then proceed to kick me and the other dps.

I usually have no problem in PUGs but this experience really left a sour taste. I've only usually game on console but I'm really starting to feel that console communities regardless of the game usually have more rotten apples than the PC counterparts.

Why would you make 7 of them the same then not add a base on the eight? Anything I've tried just looks terrible

[News] Outfit System: Basics Guide

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:24 AM PST

"Can we skip? I only need the bosses for the pledge."

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 08:52 PM PST

No.

Don't bitch at a pug for not wanting to just sprint through a dungeon because you don't have time or don't feel like doing the mobs. Join or start a guild for grinding and speeding through dungeons and pledges. Ask at the start of the dungeon. Don't be an asshole about it because you're running off ahead and dying alone while the other three group members stay together and compete the mobs.

Beat Fungal Grotto II last night for the first time...

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:13 AM PST

I was doing undaunted pledges with two of my friends (who play tank and healer) in discord (We are all fairly new~) with me and an awesome rando as dps. Oh my god was that rando a trooper...

Can i just say how weirdly designed this dungeon is?? You get to the spider boss, and you have to avoid killing spiders or else the boss'll be ten times harder...

Then the immediate next boss sends you to a room presumably filled with spiders and you CANT LEAVE until you kill them all.

Like it never TEACHES you these mechanics... And if you make the mistake of thinking it is, it completely flips it on you...

But the boss we got absolutely caught on was the one that chains you to the floor and insta gibs you if you dont kill one of the four chain holders... We were on this guy for a good HOUR. And im so surprised our rando stayed and stuck with our bs~ because it felt SO good beating that guy...

Of course, we were all mentally shot by the end of this run. All our gear shattered. We were all grumpy and happy simultaneously. We added the rando~ and it was such a strangely great time? Im super excited to make that dungeon our bitch.

Moral of the story: keep at it? Communicate, try new things, you GOT this~ communication is SO important in this game.

First clear of vMA

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:55 AM PST

Last night I completed vMA for the first time. I used a stam sorc two-hander and it took approximately 8 hours over 2 days. The hardest round was the vaults of umbrage (poison argonian round) and I estimate about 50 deaths throughout the whole thing.

Thank you to everyone who posted tips here and elsewhere on the mechanics of the arenas.

I plan to run again this weekend but for now I will proudly wear my stormproof title and hang onto the maelstrom sword and shield I got :).

Mini-rant

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 05:37 PM PST

So I'm doing the fighters guild thing in riften when trying to get some help when this person starts asking for bosses. I asked them if it had to be bosses because I needed dolmens. They told me if I helped them do bosses they'd help me do dolmens. What do you know I help them get a huge group together and after we do all the bosses they leave the group and disappear. Figures.

Tanking with magicka char - nb?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:02 AM PST

Hello there, so apparently magicka classes can be tanks too, which I didn't know. I have a 50 levels magicka dk and nb and my question is which one is more fun in your opinion, versatile? Also can I do dmg too? As a nb tank for example how fast is killing regular mobs when doing world q etc? Thank you.

[PC] Any tips for a new player?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 04:11 PM PST

I started playing ESO recently but I'm having trouble figuring the game out. Is there a certain build or guide I should follow? Is the Morrowind DLC necessary? I saw that this game had addons and was wondering if there any addons that I should be using. I currently have a level 12 Dragonknight.

What are some dungeon mechanics you wish people knew but they never seem to?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 06:14 AM PST

For me there are two in particular. Cirenas the Shepherd in Fungal Grotto II. Tell people, "don't kill the spiders" and they kill them anyway then it takes two to three times longer to kill the boss than it should. Even high level people I've run with (including a very good tank) don't seem to know this mechanic and are surprised when I tell them.

Silklenia the Songstress in Arx Corinium for pretty much the same reason: don't kill the snake.

Sometimes low level noobs will listen when you try to tell them, but usually they don't.

There are so many more but these are the two that annoy me the most. What are yours?

Lotr elves build

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 09:07 PM PST

Hey all. Looking for help on a build based on the elves in lotr. I'm thinking about the ones that come to helms deep. Here's a pic https://www.google.com/search?q=lotr+elf+warrior&client=ms-android-verizon&prmd=isvn&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjC_repq_LYAhUDy1MKHVxsAxUQ_AUIESgB&biw=412&bih=718&dpr=2.63#imgrc=YM5OfhqNrdqY5M:

Should I save my crowns from my subscription?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 05:06 PM PST

I really really like ESO, and I think I'll be playing it for a really long time. However, I'm also prone to leave games and not come back for a while. I'm not sure if I should save my crowns to purchase DLCs so that I would always have them, after my subscriptions end, or whether or not I should just spend them (I really wanna buy some cosmetics)

Did anyone else have similar plans? What did you do in the end? Thanks!

[Discussion] Is Magika DK really got nerfed or actually was stealth buffed?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:18 AM PST

Alcast in the video says that "If you look at Dragon Bones PTS. Magika Templars and Magika DK deals more damage than on the live server ..." ... which is contradicts the popular narrative of DK being nerfed to the ground in this patch. So anyone actually has data or verified facts regarding this issue? (From my estimation is was the buff to dots that is giving this result.)

New 160cp Stamina Nightblade really confused

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:15 AM PST

Hello guys.
I hope this is the right place to post this, so here it goes.
I've been playing ESO for 2 years, yes casually, only did DLC stories, some dungeons and messed around.
A few months ago I got some friends that started playing and I decided to actually level one of my characters to be able to do actual PVE content (maby pvp in the future).
So I got to level 50 and then 160 cp as I was told.
Now my gear is bad i suppose, whatever I could get from dungeons as i've never touched crafting or any other means of getting gear.
I want to be able to do trials and vet trials in the future but im stuck.
I tried farming public dungeons to farm the defiler set (As i've been told its quite good) but i can't even solo a single boss in these dungeons, actually yesterday I lost a duel to a level 14 warden.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Should I just try to grind the defiler set, maby craft something ? Is stamina nightblade supposed to be this squishy and to deal such little damage or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

[Discussion] Question on the Warden from a returning player

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 04:15 AM PST

Hey all, returning player here. I haven't played ESO for a year now but decided to give it another go.

Is the Warden any good? Does it make a good tank/healer/dps?

What is your best set suggestion for a newbie Magknight?

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 03:45 AM PST

So I have a DK, but I never play it, I simply grinded it up one day just to have one. That said, my friend does play one and he isn't really digging the stamina side so I suggested he try going magicka. I don't need a build idea because I want him to discover all of that, but what kind of crafted/gathers sets would be good for a mDK? He's pretty low right now (30), but I craft him sets every so often and I'd like to be able to best equip/help him find sets when he hits 160.

[Discussion][PC] Worth getting into ESO?

Which class and abilities simply look the coolest?

Posted: 24 Jan 2018 07:04 AM PST

Putting practicality aside, which class and/or abilities (from weapons, etc.) have some of the coolest/wildest/most creative effects on screen? Which ones make you grin from ear to ear when you see them being used in combat?

I'm still new, so I've yet to see everything. So far, I love using the Solar Prison with my Magicka Templar. It just sounds and looks awesome.

Returning Player - PvP and visual clutter

Posted: 25 Jan 2018 01:57 AM PST

Hey! :)

I played the game quite a lot when it came out and completed Morrowind last year just for myself.

Now I am kind of thinking to return and spend some more time in game. I have two basic questions and would be happy if someone could help me.

  1. How is PvP doing? Is the lag in the RvR still as bad as I remember? How much time to I have to invest in PvE until I can participate in a meaningful way (after reaching 180, or whatever the levelcap is now :) )? Is the gamemode still active or pretty much dead? And how is the 4vs4vs4 mode doing? I played a few rounds when Morrowind came out and the matches were often 4vs2vs3 and quite unbalanced.

  2. How is visual clutter doing? I loved the games artstyle at the start and enjoyed that people actually wore actual armour, rode actual horses and not looked like Christmas trees on steroids (Hello GW2). Now last time I checked the game out there were already glowing horses and cats and stuff, so I am kinda concerned about the new Outfit System. Is everybody running around in ridiculous stuff? Or is it somewhat ok? I don't need perfect 'immersion' all the time, but I shudder if I think back to GW2.

Thanks for helping and hope to see you ingame :)

Edit: If this post is against some rules just say so and I delete it :)
