The deaths and progress of HC Pironman

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 07:26 PM PST

First off, I want to explain why I'm making this whole post, as most of you probably have no idea who I am other than a broadcast for my death. Some others of you will also mix up a lot of things between regular ironmen and hardcore ironmen. Lots of regular ironmen do things like gets rots shield sets and get thousands of kills at AoD, over 1k kills at Rago etc, but this was not the case for hardcore ironmen, as the top kills in those bosses were solely for final boss kc and no more. Some previous dead hardcore ironmen may have had some more kc, but not that much more. Also be prepared to sit a while because this will be long.

I feel the need to share some insight on my personal achievements because I've been told many times and evidence shows that I was the most progressed HCIM in most of the high level end-game bosses. Some things like Araxxi for example, had some other hardcores that had more kc, more drops, and had done higher enrage. My personal highest enrage was either 180% or 200%, but generally stopped myself at a max of 160% so if I messed up or lagged on a swipe, it wouldn't instasign me.

Deaths

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's also get my deaths out of the way. The first one was to a dc at Yakamaru. I dced at the start of the kill as I was running to a geyser, but the team hadn't noticed as yaka was switching pools and tendrilled first attack on the dps pile. Someone died, they agreed to restart, and I was already nowhere to be found (not entirely sure what had happened to kill me, whether it was from a geyser and auto attacks with ss on, or if tendril spawned on me etc). Preventable by preemptive measures of always kicking the hardcore when the team decides to restart the kill (or at least get confirmation from them they have left). I don't expect the team to always watch me, I don't want to be babysat or treated other than a normal ironman except to keep me alive if it comes down to bad situations. Either way, this dc had some unlucky timing.

The second death was at AoD, to the famous shadow-ice... and my own stupidity. We had known about shadows appearing under the person who got iced for a long time, and we also tried to make plans (for everyone on the team, not just me) to go near the centre if you got iced as nex phases - in case you got the instakill. If you're on the wall and you get iced in the last couple seconds of her phase, you won't be able to make it to the middle in time as your surge goes on cooldown. Unfortunately, this also meant shadows could appear under you if you got iced tick perfectly. Even though I knew about them, these caught me off guard and I didn't prepare my hp to full when I got iced. Missing 4-5k hp at the start, taking 2 shadows before eating anything, and just general unpreparedness is what caused this death. If I had taken the right precautions, this would have signed me and I would switch to my other iron account after the kill, but would not have caused a death. Just as a nice kick in the pants, the fix was also released for this the next day. Here's the gif if you haven't seen it yet

My third and final death was due to pure stupidity. Some people say that disconnects are the real boss for hcim, and I would have to agree. Every death in this game is preventable some way or another, but dcs are very unpredictable. Even if that means not going somewhere because you know your internet is bad atm, that's preventing a possible death. Of course, I don't expect that to hold true for everyone because if all you do is nothing, then you're not having the fun you want. That being said, I try not to blame dcs; if there's ever a way you can prevent the death even though the dc occurred, I would blame human error. Anywho, this was one of those times, and I knew that I still needed to get a lot more slayer levels to be able to kill magister, which was my only "real" requirement left for final boss. The few other bosses I was missing, I could either easily and happily grind out or finish before Magister (Legiones), or just do a few kills to finish up (KBD and Telos). So, I opt to do some slayer as my client has been freezing/dcing randomly a lot the last week and a half, and slayer is generally very safe if you kill mobs one at a time, bring a sign of life (or def cape variant), and wear a ring of life. That's where I went wrong. I had a task of Nihils, enter, spawn them and they all start attacking me, making me realize I forgot my shard of zaros. Panic ensues. No max cape on to spam tele out with (I brought ava's alerter because stubbornness - even though I don't need to save rax arrows, it feels bad to waste them), so I click the door and start running. No ring of life because Hazelmere ring chance! No food because I'm dumb and forgot to bring a bit of panic food, but I can excal. No sign or portent of life because I automatically think I have it in my cape... but obviously brought the wrong one, so I left the Crystal teleport seed in pocket slot instead. As I'm running I look at my options and think it's just the tele seed and quiver that I can teleport with, forgetting that lotd has a nice quick right-click tele. Character goes through the door with about 2k hp or so, and I'm met with many spam hits from all the nihils attacking me and a free teleport back to Prifddinas. The message on the highscores shows that I died to an unknown power in the Sanctum, which is probably because when I left the room (which is instanced), the Nihils despawned and the hits had no user that they came from, or something similar. This one was extremely preventable with a single one of any prevention method I mentioned (or shard of zaros), but being forgetful and too impatient to double check that I have everything is what killed me.

Obviously, if I had the chance to go back and change things, I would. Hcim is very fun if you don't cower behind your hardcore symbol, and to me gives more meaning than just playing a regular ironman, since there are so many others that are high level now. However, for the last death I've had many chances to fix my mistakes, but I keep making the same ones. I often forget a sign of life when ranging with alerter, sometimes I forget to bring panic food, I could put lotd back on a secondary bar to spam click tele out (it was previously replaced with max cape), or just bring a ring of life. I did none of that and have payed the price.

Achievements/Progress

I won't include all my progress like skill levels and quests etc, as it's not something I would want to read through and this post is already long enough. However, I'll include a little bit of story with it just to give some meat to the words, so to speak, and try to keep it semi-short.
I first made the account with the intent to be the first Hcim warden. I didn't have that much experience with Telos beforehand, but didn't want to put a lot of time into learning it further (had 2 accounts get warden, but didn't push further) just to forget it all by the time the hardcore was ready. Therefore, start the new hcim grind. As I progressed further with things like cywir wand, into nox bow, into nox staff, into merc shield and tectonic, my gear was getting closer and closer, if not ready for Telos. Since I was still inexperienced, I decided I wanted to get Affliction before going.
Unfortunately, went pretty dry on my first codex and still didn't practice Telos to feel safe enough doing a warden streak, but I did pick up an extremely lucky Praesul wand at 106kc. Before getting Affliction still, I was the first hcim to complete rots bobbleheads, and picked up my first AoD codex at 504 kc. Now I have much more than necessary to get warden, but still delay it because I haven't practiced and don't feel confident with it (especially without maniacal or t4 runic). Meanwhile, Welbeck achieves the first hcim warden, so congrats to him. Now there's no pressure on me to do it fast anymore and I'm free to take my time with it and wait for aura upgrades.
At this point with rots bobbleheads done, I feel like it would be a nice goal to go for ifb too, and mainly focus on the harder bosses first to show that everything is possible and very doable to get ifb on a hcim. Even if I end up dcing or doing something dumb, maybe my legacy can live on and inspire someone else to finish by showing that the hard stuff can be simple if you do it right. After this point, I end up being the first hcim with a full t92 (and 2 codices now) by grabbing an also extremely lucky core from aod.

Fast forward more more time and here's some compilation of end progress, with some mix and matching for gear to fit it all in one screenie.

Notable gear. Some perks worth noting: pf/as1 cywir wand, two p4/e2 gizmos (one on core, the other in gizmo bag waiting for as3 on bow or another t92), two scav3 gizmos (one lost to last death), as3 on scythe/praesul wand/nox staff, crackling 3+mobile on tectonic body. No biting 3 gizmos, as I still needed a fourth hilt for those (yes I also got incredibly lucky and got a nox set with no duplicates).
Boss kills and Boss pets. Max Telos enrage ended up being 284% (that's around the enrage I usually stopped my loot streaks, a little less usually obviously), and was finally ready to go for warden when the client freezing/dcing let up. We can't all get what we want though.
Number of times signed... That depends a lot on if you include safe deaths as a valid sign. I signed about 10 times total where it actually mattered. Some places like pest control for example, I brought a sign accidentally and signed with the intention of just dying instead, so I don't count those. A big portion of that was my kilns, since paying little attention and a subpar revo bar means you end up taking a lot of damage, so I'm pretty sure I signed more times at kiln than everywhere else in the game combined (but only died once somehow). My first sign was to Araxxor p1, due to a tendril, no eating, web and wasn't prepared to eat or res soon enough. I was devasted and it felt like I lost a life. To me, I actually did because I tried so hard to not sign a single time, and ended up losing it to something incredibly dumb like that. Having that be after I had already obtained a t90 does feel nice now at least.

Overall, I am proud of my accomplishments, especially that I always kept my motto that I didn't want to leech anything just because I've made previous connections with ironmen. I always want to pull my own weight and take roles where possible/necessary. I trioed all but three rago trips, have done all roles at raids (and made my team feel more nervous than I was for doing so), soloed all my Nex since ceremonial set (duoed before that to get lots of kills per trip and have the better chance from nex minions), always wore dps gear except when I was tanking and my first few yaka kills (brought 3 pieces of primeval after talking with team to see how it went, before having ed2) and for daredevil feats that allowed it. I went back to do all Daredevil feats with another team purely to take important roles or be "normal" (stun tank, stun5, tank poison), again to prove my own worth to myself whether others think it's any more impressive or not. I've done just about every role at every boss I can think of except basing aod (before 600k, because rng mage hits are very scurry), tanking kk (did those kills trio as the voker, though wanted to do some duos for most of pet grinding and a few solos just to show that I can), and being on the opposite side of Karil at rots... because shadow lightning is also very scurry.
Lots of people always ask me "What will you do if your hardcore dies?", and my response is that I really don't know and it's not something worth thinking about yet. Well, the time has come and I suppose my answer now is that I'll keep playing it like my main. It's further than either of my other accounts towards ifb (has some of the more annoying or long and tedious stuff done), and I find it lots of fun to have comp to obtain again still, rather than only getting 120 slayer to get it back on the other accounts. Even though I say this, it's still a big mystery as of now and I don't know what'll happen fully until the time comes. This was probably a good thing so I don't get absorbed so much in the hcim, because believe it or not, real life is a thing too. who knew???

I also want to give a huge thanks to all my friends that helped me progress this year, especially to the ones that let me do the things I wanted to do and prove my worth, rather than telling me to just be dps and be safe. All your motivation and encouragement and cheering up when I was in the gutter, everything helped. You all know who you are, even if you don't have an ironman at all, and there's way too many of you to name. So Thank you all.

Sorry for the super long post btw please don't hate me

Disassembly Interface idea

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 08:54 PM PST

Ideally the disassembly interface would keep a running total of each component earned during bulk disassembly. This could be toggled with the minimize button which would revert it to the standard (current) interface. Having the window expanded would also remove the "Materials Ganied" messages from appearing in the chat window. I've made a mockup below:

https://imgur.com/a/jKC93

This is by no means necessary, but could be a cool addition to disassembly to better keep track of the components you are earning.

I know this isn't a big concern to 99.9% of runescape players but I really enjoyed making outfits around afros and now I can't keepsake anymore afros. I can still use the ones I keepsaked a while ago but I would really like it we could keepsake them again.

PSA: Get ~380k+ Divination xp/hr* at Luminous wisps this weekend using Diviner's outfit + Light creature familiar and its' Enlightement scrolls + Decorated div urns.

Posted: 09 Dec 2017 07:00 AM PST

The wisps gathering xp is tripled this weekend and the Light Creature familiar + scroll really boost the xp nicely.

Also use Crystal Skillchompas for a 22,5% increased chance of getting an enriched memory if you have too much money.

(*): With BXP. Non-afk xp rate & not 100% accurately calculated. It can easily be more than 380k focusing.

Shop changes was actually a massive invention nerf

Posted: 08 Dec 2017 01:45 PM PST

So I just realised all the increased stock in shops sounded awesome. Many of us have been doing 'shop runs' for components, mainly base parts since the release of invention and this update has HUGELY NERFED that method (and really screwed over every ironman).

Previously we could do shop runs for base parts, easily stock up on good weapons (addy/mith etc). Now, all of those stock is either completely removed, or has it's stock set at 2 instead of 10. Yet only INCREASES in stock were ever advertised? Why quietly HEAVILY NERF invention? At least explain why before completely screwing over every ironman and anyone not swimming in money who can just buy everything off the ge.
