Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

There's this Pokéstop/Gym near me which seems inappropriate. Can I report it?

Use this link. However, Niantic seems to be preoccupied with other things now, so don't expect too much.

We have Niantic representatives on both here and /r/TheSilphRoad - please do not ping them for bugs which are in the known issues page unless you have found a niche yet gamebreaking issue/exploit.

Salty Sunday - Rage Rants and complaints

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 10:09 AM PST

Have you been the one missing the Mewtwo EX raidpass? Maybe you haven't been lucky the whole week and that damn raid Tyrannitar ran and everyone else caught him.

Or the worst part, maybe it's monday again?!

(ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Here we rant about everything that goes wrong, someone who sniped a gymspot ( ̄Д ̄), a missed Tyrannitar again (ಠ_ಠ) or that stupid bug which made you miss your raid because of the server desync, ending the raid prematurely (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ

No personal insults, no trolls and provocation but all salty stuff is accepted.

  • Only salty posts allowed ( ಠ_ಠ )

  • No uncivilty or personal information allowed. ☜(`o´)

  • Complaints can be posted here as well, agree that stuff needs to change here as well, like the spawn rate or gym bugs.

    (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

Don't forget to hydrate after all the salt!

weather only increases likelihood of certain types spawning. It doesn't create new spawns, but I think it should do both.

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 02:30 PM PST

When it gets windy, I expected to see some dratinis at least. But no. Not one. And I realized after a lot of observation, that if some pokemon never spawn in a certain area, the weather doesn't make them any more available. I think maybe Niantic should modify this and also add more pokemon due to the weather. It doesn't get windy all that much, and it sucks to just get even more pidgeys.....

[Idea] EX Raid passes as a rare random group-wide item drop from a legendary raid

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 06:42 AM PST

Imagine this. Say, on average, one out of every 10 legendary raids (and maybe decreasing odds for level 4, level 3, level 2, and level 1 raids), the entire group that takes down the boss gets rewarded with an EX pass. For one week from the start time of the legendary raid at that same gym.

Why is this better than the current system?

  1. This keeps raiding groups together and creates connections between raiders.
  2. This discourages spoofers - The raiders can create a private group to lock out spoofers so that passes only get distributed to legit players. Perhaps the likelihood of passes going out is a bit higher the smaller the raid group, just like how rewards are a bit better.
  3. Because it'll always be at the same gym, at the same time, one week later, it maximizes the chance that the particular raiders will be able to attend. Obviously it's not a guarantee, but it's better than the current system.

And it maintains many ideas in the spirit of the current system. For example, more frequent raiding increases the likelihood of getting an EX pass.

What do you think?

OpenStreetMap - What it is and how to contribute?

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 01:45 PM PST

Pokemon Go and Ingress changed their base maps from Google Maps to OpenStreetMap just recently. A lot of you may have discovered a loss in information on the map. No building shapes, no parks or footways. But you can add them and help to create a free world map.

What is OpenStreetMap?

Simply Wikipedia for maps. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a map that anyone can edit, similar to Wikipedia, but not the same. Everything you see in the world could be in one map. Open-source, usable for everyone. Niantic uses OSM data for Pokemon Go, Wheelmap helps people with disabilities ,and Kurviger can show routes for motorcyclists that are more curvy and outside of residential areas. There are many more examples how the data you contribute is used.

How is it different from Google Maps?

Google Maps is great but not open data. Are you allowed to print it commercially? No. Can you take the map data and create your own routing engine? No. Create your own map style from their data? Nope. Google has invested a lot of money to get all those building shapes, lakes and other geographical information. They won't share it and that's their right. But we believe that all of this information should be available in one big database free for everyone.

Isn't mapping complicated?

No. The world of OpenStreetMap consists of three basic elements. Points (nodes), lines (ways) and areas. They get their values through so called tags (like name=Golden Gate Bridge). For example a church could outlined as an area and tagged as:

name=Church of our Lady building=church amenity=place_of_worship religion=christian denomination=evangelical

We use nodes for shops, small features like fountains or bicycle repair stations. Ways for roads, paths, small waterways. Areas for forests, buildings and ponds.

How can I edit?

We have two main editors for armchair mapping. iD and JOSM. JOSM is an advanced standalone editor but it's better to have some experience before you begin mapping with it. I will focus on the browser based one called iD.

Some tutorial videos:

To add things with your mobile phone you can use OsmAnd or Maps.me, which also display the map you help to create. StreetComplete for Android to add information to existing stuff on OSM.

What are some "unwritten" rules?

  • Have a look for the Tips for new (Pokemon Go) mappers
  • Map what's on the ground.
  • Have a look in the Wiki, nearly all tags are described there.
  • Copy from other parts of the world, where something is already mapped. Look in bigger cities or in Europe, where things are mapped to the greatest detail (who the fuck maps the color of trash bins?)
  • Don't copy from copyrighted sources like Google Maps.
  • Ask! Other mappers will help you, ask on /r/openstreetmap, help.openstreetmap.org or in the Slack Channel from OpenStreetMap US or on country-specific OSM mailing lists and IRC channels
  • Don't use the name tag to describe the object. For example, name=bench, instead use amenity=bench. Use tags to classify objects instead of name. Name should only be used for features with actual names, like buildings or restaurants.

What is good mapping?

  • Connect footways with streets. Only things that are connected can be used for routing. Example, if you don't connect them
  • Don't connect landuses with streets. It's hard to change something afterwards and also confusing.
  • Square buildings.
  • Check if the satellite layer is misaligned. Compare the satellite layer with existing streets and gps traces.
  • Don't delete stuff. First ask the mapper why he did something the way he did. Maybe you just have old satellite data.

What else?

Registeel's Stats Have Me a Little Worried

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 05:28 PM PST

After reviewing the game's base code after the most recent datamine, we have learned many things about the coming pokémon for Gen 3 - as well as their base movesets and stats for the time being - some of which have been tweaked (Kyogre, Rayquaza).

Much to my surprise, it seems that Registeel is still astoundingly weaker than its other titan counterparts:

Regirock: Stamina: 160 Attack: 179 Defense: 356 Projected CP (lvl. 40): 3087

Regice: Stamina: 160 Attack: 179 Defense: 356 Projected CP (lvl. 40): 3087

Registeel: Stamina: 160 Attack: 143 Defense: 285 Projected CP (lvl. 40): 2261 (. . . ?)

If others have been nerfed/buffs, would it be strange to expect these numbers to shift prior to the regis' release? It does not seem like Registeel has any other significant moveset or DPS advantages over the other two, and it is extremely curious. Players were somewhat distressed when Suicune's too stats were only a few hundred less CP than the respective legendary beasts in its class, but with the case of the regis, we're talking in margins close to a thousand, and the two others have identical base stats - unlike the stronger beasts.

Articuno and Suicune were each the weakest of their groups, but not by such horrendous margins, and their counterparts didn't have identical stats either. Registeel is just weaker. . . Why?

Thoughts?

Is anyone else getting only increased Normals in Partly Cloudy?

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 12:10 PM PST

I'm not getting any Larvitar or Rhyhorn....just millions of Eevees (which obviously could be worse). Other weathers are giving me type variety, but not PC. I was so hoping to get more Stone type candies from PC :(

The only thing I use it for and I'm sure many others is to see how many coins we've earned for the day and it's annoying and time consuming to go through every single pokestop item find. Thank you.

What are you doing with your larvitar candy?

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 12:19 PM PST

Would you rather max out your highest level Tyranitar, bring another Tyranitar to level 30, or evolve a 4th Tyranitar and hope for a better moveset (to save TMs)?

Raid wise, I'm just conflicted on what to do so I'm curious what others are doing.
