Learn Dota 2 - The way I personally introduced my friends to dota 2.

The way I personally introduced my friends to dota 2.

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 01:08 PM PST

I know that in /r/dota2 there has always been an uproar about the game's tutorial being garbage and feeling unable to get other friends into playing dota. However, I personally feel that their approach satisfy only their own ego more than trying to get their friends to have fun.

They want their friends to start to try hard right from the beginning, so they teach their friends all these complex mechanics while playing WITH their friends to own bots.

I feel that this is the incorrect method of introducing friends to dota 2. I think that the best way to introduce dota to someone is with the following steps.

  1. Get the person interested by talking about these cool abilities heroes can do, and to get them to have an end goal with you.

  2. Get them to actually free up a little bit of time and download the game.

  3. dota_new_player 0. Fuck this stupid 25 games bullshit.

  4. Tell them to look at the keybinds and hero choices while you set up a custom game with passive bots, cheats should be enabled, you should be the coach.

  5. When they have everything loaded in, ask them if they have any questions, and you should obviously answer truthfully.

  6. Give them tons of gold so that they are 6 slotted. Introduce them to the shop and the courier. Tell them to press shift f3 if they want their items delivered. Use torte de lini's build if you want. You can also just ask them to buy a veil, Eblade, and Dagon and watch them 1 shot people with abilities. Now this will be the game where you watch him wreak passive bots by 1 shotting them. All you have to do is to watch them, and let them have fun. If they have questions, answer them, it does not matter if they are playing in the "wrong way", they just need to have fun. (basically only tell them about the very very VERY basics of dota 2, don't tell your friend about stacking when they just start playing PLEASE)

  7. Now you get in character to become a dota drug deale....

  8. Now that the game is over and your friend 1 shotted everything they saw, you can play a game with your friend, play support, not a core. Still give them a crap ton of gold, but slowly decrease the gold. When the gold is decreased to a point where they only have "late early game items", up the difficulty and repeat with all the gold decreasing thing.

  9. The VERY VERY VERY last thing you want to introduce to your friend is the early game, unless your friend LOVES the early game. You want to introduce your friend to the early game when he is chasing after the high of "one shotting the enemy team". He is now committed, and you can play unranked when you judge your friend is ready.

  10. Mute all of his team and enemies every game.

  11. Now you can have fun with your friend and play some carry/main role, only when your friend is having fun, you can have fun with him.

How to play BH when heavily countered?

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 12:47 PM PST

3k archon 3 here. I recently played a game as BH where I had no impact because no matter what I did the enemy team had sentries in every lane from minute 0. I failed a gank top, tried mid, failed there, and went back top (bot wasn't killable). Failed top again and tried bottom, but failed again because there were sentries there too.

I kept dying because of their vision on every lane and I spent all of my gold on sentries to deward them, but they always had more.

No idea what to do here...

Good resources for learning offlane techniques?

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:33 PM PST

I've been a pos 5 player for most of my Dota life, but now with the changes to offlane it sounds like something right up my alley.

Unfortunately I'm having a lot of trouble finding resources. Going onto youtube and looking up "Offlane 7.07" brings up tons of "UNIVERSE 7.07 EZ OFFLANE 10000 KILLS COMPILATION" videos. I'm looking for something a bit more structured and educational since I have near 0 experience in the offlane.

Anything is appreciated, but I would definitely like a recommendation on channels as well as written stuff if possible. I'm uncalibrated rn but before matchmaking changes I was 3.4k

Thanks! :)

Matchmaking after first initial 20 games

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:33 PM PST

So I've dived back into Dota after not playing for about 11 years. Overall I'm really enjoying my expierence and getting my mechanics back in order. Can't believe how much more fluid it is compared to the WC mod I grew up playing on lol.

So my question, I'm finding that my initial 20 games are pretty one sided and kinda insane. Like one game my team will just steamroll the enemy, the next we get romped. Is this kinda how the MM goes in pubs or does it get a little better?

I don't know if I really want to get into ranked, but if the matchmaking is a little better and people have a little better map awareness, then I'll jump into that eventually I guess.

Looking for good Dota 2 analysis/content

Someone who goes through replays or explains concepts behind what a high level team or player is doing.

Something like Elmapuddy for CSGO or Croissant for League

Position 5 Pull or Zone?

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 09:48 AM PST

I'm an ancient 0 player that plays primarily offlane and roaming, and yesterday I was in a match where I had to play position 5 support. I was Lion, my safelane partner was Ursa, and Riki was the roamer, though he stayed safelane 90% of the laning phase. We were up against a solo clockwerk who bought a ton of regen.

I don't play position 5 much, but when I do in a trilane, usually I will stay in lane and harass or try to kill for the first wave, then go back to pull thru at 1:13, get the rune at 2:00, and then reassess if I can keep pulling or if I can go back and get a quick kill or heavy harass on the offlaner. However, against the clockwerk, I didn't feel like I could do a whole lot without risking a lot of mana to cogs, so I just mainly tried to pull a lot and figured clock wasn't a huge threat to ursa anyways, especially with riki messing with him. I occasionally walked to lane to suck clockwerk's mana, but that was about it.

However, I got flamed a lot by both the riki and ursa for doing this. They both said I should have been spending a lot more time zoning clock instead of bothering to pull. I feel like this is incorrect, but again I don't play pos 5 regularly so I'm not really sure. I feel like there's very little I can do to a tanky clock with a ton of regen that a riki can't do by himself anyways, and by pulling I'd do a lot more to increase my own gold and XP and denying creepwaves to the clock. Let me know how I should have spent my time better.

Transitioning from laning phases to mid-game tips and tricks

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 11:49 AM PST

So here's the thing, I've been having great laning phases, good cs, good amount of kills and assists,1 or 2 deaths, and a good level or 2 above the enemy team. But when it comes to midgame, that's where I lose my steam. Few games I've won because my team carried me.(Ex. early-game 7/1 -> mid-game 7/7) So how do I keep my momentum, and what can i do while it' still early game to get more of an advantage? Thank you in advance

Any tips and tricks to nailing the requiem of souls on enemy heroes?

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 10:52 AM PST

I've been practicing euls into requiem in lobby for a bit now and it's getting more consistent both with positioning and timing, but it still feels kind of difficult to get completely centered for the max damage blast 10 out of 10 attempts, it'll be even harder in real games.

I'm not sure if I like blink or not on SF, but a funny thought I had was to hurricane pike into them, Euls, blink to the perfect pixel spot, then ult... Not really worth putting pike on CD when you could instead just blink in and nail the ult, but still an interesting idea if it's like 1 hero alive and you won't need pike after he's dead :P

Also final question, I remember people used to talk about requiem being bugged in the past where even perfect centre didn't deal full damage. Was that ever fixed?

Help me see what I did wrong in this game as a roaming slardar.

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:03 AM PST

Hey, I am a ~3k player, I decided to play some roaming slardar because offlane (which I usually play) was taken and I feel that duo offlane is really quite bad.

Game: https://www.opendota.com/matches/3647313132/purchases Opendota: https://www.opendota.com/players/87538054

My analysis:

We manage to secure our safelane void both bounty runes which is great and I put down an aggressive ward in our safelane. I thought he bought the mango so I was pretty sure he didn't have enough money for a ward to see me do it, I was wrong but it worked out so whatever.

I hide in the trees, we get first blood because he has no stomp. Game is going good. I am pretty nervous about the storm and I think I should definitely gank him before his power spike at 6 at which point killing him would be near impossible. Crystal maiden teleports bottom which I think is very good for us as it slows down the titan's xp gain. We manage to get a double kill because titan still isn't lv2.

Next I run around like a bit like a headless chicken. I get both bounty runes, try to shrine but I didn't know the first shrine appears at 5min mark, I guess that's what I get after not playing for ~2 years and coming back. I heal up with tangos and clarities and go to gank midlane despite it being daytime and me not having smoke. I figure storm is so out of position we can get a kill anyway. It works, great for us once again.

We try to get a kill on cm, titan has stomp, doesn't work out. I know pangolier is having a hard time but ck is very tanky and ck+lesh is honestly really spooky so I decide to not go gank there because I think I will just feed the lane. Had it been some squishier carry/less kill potential for them I most likely would've played most of the game top instead of bottom.

I try to gank storm, don't check his items which I think is the first big mistake from me. Had I seen he had a haste I wouldn't have bothered to gank him there. Fortunately I can get a denied by roshan.

We try to make shit happen at bot, get a titan kill but all die to a ganking storm due to it. I feel like this is the point the game starts to snowball out of our control. We should've seen him coming, didn't and died for it. We also don't have an answer for storm other than chrono.

We get a kill at bottom, I die to a solo storm because I underestimated him and thought I was stronger than I was due to playing a lot of offlane slardar I guess.

At this point I think my impact drops quite a lot. I can't kill ck/storm, ganking offlane by myself would be pointless as we can't get kills there with only me and pangolier. PA wanted to play as a farming mid so no hope of help from him either.

Storm gets a solo kill on PA, not much I could've done there. I go to PAs lane to get some solo xp because I am underleveled and desperately need that 6.

Go bottom get some kills, they try to gank, it doesn't work very well for them, get some kills again and now I try to organise my team to push the tower as 4 of us are there. It really doesn't work out and pangolier dies to storm top.

At this point I usually try to get my blink and sit behind important people (void/PA in this game) to try to get some kills. Nobody tries to counter storm. We lose spectacularly. The end.

If you see anything I did wrong/could've done better or just had bad decision making and low impact on the game let me know please! Thank you.

Whenever I play ursa, I feel like I fuck up my items

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 03:39 AM PST

3648047699

Here is the match ID. A TLDR of the game from my perspective was as follows. I start out very strong, I can tell the spec isn't that good and I kill her and CM a couple times.

Then at like 10 minutes literally everyone is coming to the top lane, I dive tower because kills and like 4 people TP in to kill me. After dying a few times top, I get vlads because I felt like I needed the armor and lifesteal. Not sure if it was the right purchase, but it allowed me to Rosh. Literally the only good thing I did this game was kill Rosh. Felt like every hero on dire had a way to deal with me . I felt very useless. By the time I got BKB, I was doing no damage. Only reason my team won was because we had a shaman and PA who knew what they were doing.

I know I fucked up, but I'm not sure what to do with ursa honestly. Feels like he needs so many goddamn items. He needs a mask to do Rosh, he needs a blink so he can actually catch people, he needs a bkb so he doesn't get kited, he needs linkensto deal with BKB piercing stuns and slows, he needs basher or diffusal to lock people down.

Was ursa a bad pick there? Whenever I fought, viper just waited to ult me and I would get focused and controlled. If an ursa player could tell me why I suck at this hero it would be amazing. Thanks for reading.

Edit: I know that I misplayed a bunch of times, yes I know I should have eaten cheese at certain points, yes I know that I should have used ult earlier in some fights, but i know that's not why I sucked at ursa. It's something bigger than simple mistakes.

Which hero to spam ~2.5k MMR

Posted: 29 Dec 2017 05:14 AM PST

Hi,

i often play with my friend who plays support/offlane. I usually play carry. I spammed a bit juggernaut, but it's getting boring and i am not winning with him at this tier.

My problems are mostly laning & positioning (and currently lasthitting, but i am working on that one again). Currently the last 10 games i had cancer offlanes against me (support+me vs 2 offlaners or semi support+offlane) which were annoying as hell.

I guess this will happen very often at this mmr.

I was thinking about WK, LS, Spectre, DK. (I failed as Sven, hence i try to stay away from him).

I wanted to test a range #1 Core, but currently i can't see any good heroes except drow, which is kinda boring.

https://www.dotabuff.com/players/39692737

please help me decide. the hero shouldn't be easy to counterpick (it's not really necessary at this mmr, because most of the time the counterpicker is bad with the hero) but I want to first pick to not loose gold.

edit: my friend mentioned to pick accordingly to cancer enemies; hence an usually offlane hero;

Doom: Creep Devour during laning phase

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 08:21 PM PST

Any creep devour seems like it's going to adversely affect equillbrium.

How do people manage? Say that you've already devoured a jungle creep with the utility/passive that you're looking for.

It doesn't make sense to NOT use it, as youre losing out on gold potential.

So what do people do? Just push the lane? And you get more gold from devouring a ranged creep, so do you wait for a ranged creep to get low before you devour it like a last hit?
