Low MMR Replay Coaching - Submit your dotabuff

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 11:01 AM PST

Hi guys, I'm doing a low MMR replay coaching series focusing on players around Herald or Guardian. I'm going to look for games that are a good demonstration of a weak skill and how to improve it but if you have a suggestion of what match to pick feel free to recommend one. If you have submitted one last time I requested then feel free to resubmit but unless I find a great match to demonstrate new ones will take priority.

Please submit your Dotabuff or Opendota. High MMR players please move along to see Purge. We are focusing on the basics here. Feel free to point to a match but as I'm looking for some good teaching points I might choose a different one. Oh and put your ingame name so I know which one is you.

Each video will be posted to reddit for further discussion and the video itself will link to the discussion. As some of you have already seen, sometimes I skip stuff just to keep the video short, or I think its outside of the scope but its still good to discuss. I think these post commentary discussions are great for us all learning more and for me seeing if I missed something important.

Heres a couple of different sryle examples of the series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwZaCKkII1c and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhvN2KAMq2U

The aim here is to focus on the simple stuff that low skill players miss. I'm not going to go over every situational thing that could affect a game, usually.

You can stop reading here the rest is just waffle

I remember wathcing Purge's videos (and you should still check them out by the way) but one thing that struck me is that when I watched them a year later I got completely different value out of them because my understanding of the game had changed. This is becuase players at the bottom end of the dota learning curve simply do not have the foundation knowledge to take full value out of the stuff at the top end of the learning curve. My goal with this series will be to get the players to over 2k MMR and to build the foundation knowledge that will see you getting full value out of watching higher skilled games.

I have recently been coaching my fiancée who hasnt even unlocked ranked yet. This made the skill gap issue clear. To a 4k player I might say "stun that guy". But do I just mean stun that guy? No I mean, attack once, attack move stun, step 2 steps left to hide in fog, eat tango during fight to keep hp high, attack move 2 more steps left apply slow attack move twice more, stick for mana, cast stun right click once more, back off 2 stewps to hide in fog, wait for ult to reengage. You see the 4k player knows that combo, but not just that he knows where the enemy fog is. Even if I teach someone to attack move will they know where the enemy fog is? Will they know how to count stick charges, will they know which spot to hide in to make a perfect cm ult if the enemy re-engages. Do they even know what tangos do? When you tell someone its a good idea to pull now do they know how to pull? A couple of games with my fiancée made me realise how much a different approach needs to be taken to coaching players at different skill levels.

Two very useful command console

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 12:21 AM PST

dota_ping_menu_delay 0.001
cl_dota_alt_unit_movetodirection 1

In case you don't know, if you hold the mouse when you ping, a ping menu show up. But the ping menu is really bad and unresponsive. The first command makes the ping menu more responsive and snappier so you don't have to hold the mouse for it to show up.

The second command is hold alt to force movetodirection. This is very useful if you have force staff, play sf, slark, mirana, or whatever. What it does is that if you hold alt while moving, your hero will move in that direction IGNORING the terrain. Super useful if you need to force staff over a cliff or chase as slark. If you need a demonstration of what this command does, let me know and I can make a video demonstration.

Edit: To clarity, the second command allow you to press ALT to force move to ignoring terrain. Here're gifs I make demonstrating what the second command does.

2ks and below: kill one more wave

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 02:45 AM PST

So I'm only a 2.Xk myself and I don't want to claim I'm good. And I don't like those posts that claim "all 2ks be like", or "no 1ks buy detection" because the fact is we're all shit in our own unique way. That said, this is a cardinal sin that I see in every single game I play, and it's why I have extreme success playing heroes that can clear waves.

Have you fellow 1k and 2k players ever noticed that sometimes towers just die for seemingly no reason? No one was there, no one was pushing, the tower just died?

Odds are, that's because someone didn't push out the wave. They thought they did. They killed a creep wave at the base of the tower, then left. That is NOT pushing out a creep wave. That is, at best, resetting the equilibrium just outside your tower range. See, after you kill a pushing creep wave, whatever is left of your own creep wave will run forwards and hit the enemy's next, fresh, creep wave. If you're lucky your own creep wave is also fresh. If not, they're not. So at best, you've created the kind of equilibrium that you only want in the laning phase. At worst, you're going to see that creep wave push your tower again, for a short time at least. Either way, any hero in the game, even a Bane, can be a split pusher in that scenario.

What you need to do is kill the NEXT creep wave. That will create the momentum that causes your creeps to hit the NEXT creep wave - with backup on the way - and snowball things into your enemy's tower and not your own.

Now sure, as with all things DotA, there are exceptions. You're welcome to think about them. But as a general rule I guarantee this will win you games.

How do I stop tinker?

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 02:02 PM PST

If a tinker is picked we will lose to him. March spam, rocket spam, blinking into the tree spam. ~3k mmr.

He seriously ruins my game every time he's picked. How do I deal with him?

Improving my Tinker game

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 12:41 PM PST

I just had a game with tinker where I had quite a good start but our team started to fall behind in the mid game. We finally managed to claw back a small lead in the mid game after losing a set of rax. What could I have done in the mid game to help secure a larger lead for the team? Overall, I think I did quite well in this game. Just looking for tips to see what I could have done better this game.

Is Crimson Guard a legit item for BH?

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 07:48 PM PST

I try to build items that will help my team as a pos 4 BH, and against heavy physical damage lineups I usually go for halberd, shiva's guard and/or crimson guard when we don't have anyone else that usually build it. I see it as a pipe for physical damage.

Is it a good item to build? Or is the damage blocked from the active negligible?

Where do you find the Dotabuffs of pro players?

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 07:35 PM PST

Let's say I want to review a specific hero game from Miracle. I searched for Miracle- on Dotabuff, and found this, which I'm guessing is his official account: https://www.dotabuff.com/players/105248644

That shows the last game as two weeks ago, but clearly he's been streaming and playing every day. For example, this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQgBbC_fHVM

Is there a way to find his or another pro's other account(s)? The reason I'm asking is because I'm following Cookie's guides, and want to find a high-level player or two that has 20+ games on a certain hero so that I can watch and try to analyze. I'm sure I could find a 4-5k hero spammer with 3000+ games on a certain hero, but I don't know that those are the best players to learn from.

Pos 5 Silencer - general questions

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 06:23 PM PST

Hey, r/learndota2!

I've been interested in playing Silencer and since getting mid is not a given I decided to run him as a Pos 5 as I don't think he has enough roaming potential to be a (currently) decent Pos 4 pick.

Now I wanted to know what you guys think about Silencer as pos 5 and when it's a justifiable pick.

Would the same rule of thumb apply for pos 5 as for Silencer mid to pick him against heroes with channeling abilities such as Enigma & CM and to mess with BB and the like?

Does anyone know good pos 5 Silencer support footage?

Thanks in advance!

Mid-lane pushing and rotations

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 10:43 AM PST

So when do you actually start pushing your mid lane? I'm now really confused after watching a few pro players in pubs.

Also, if I'm up against a shadow fiend, storm or tinker, and they keep pushing the lane against me, and constantly go for jungle rotations, what's the best course of action to do? do I try to deny as much creeps or do I push their tower?

Ideal way to use TB's illusions?

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 10:05 AM PST

One really minor thing that kinda bugs me is how exactly should I use Tb's illusions along with the main hero to maximize my farm. This is because I can (a) keep my illusions with me and clear a single camp/wave faster, or (b) send my illusions everywhere and clear maybe 2 lanes and a camp, albeit a bit slower. TBH I use the second method a lot more where I just keep my hero in the jungle and send my 2 illusions to the nearest lane to push it out. The downside seems to be that sometimes a teammate could be farming that lane or an enemy comes to push it out, and in either case I'd rather have my illusion sit next to me and speed up my farm. One could also argue that a lone TB clears camps at a somewhat slow rate, so the ideal way would be to farm camps with main TB+one illusion while the other one pushes out a nearby lane. Is there any simple way to decide how many illusions do I keep with me in jungle and how many do I send into the lane?

p.s. this is mostly just assuming the 2 illusions I can have at a time with my W, having a manta gives me even more illusions which I always use to push lanes anyway.

Ember Spirit - Item build and Drow Ranger

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 09:57 AM PST

Hello!

I think my favorite hero that's hard to play is Ember Spirit. I'm motivated to learn the hero, and I'm happy as I get closer to being able to play it seriously in my Dota ranked games.

I have a question - how to play against Drow Ranger? I bought BKB in a game against her, and while being able to remanent out by purging the silencer is good, she's still able to right click really hard on Ember, and the frost arrow slow isn't purged. What to do? Or is she always needing friendly heroes to distract her?

Also, I found a build on Dotabuff by a high level player that goes Aquila -> Drums -> Travels -> Battlefury -> Maelstrom

I'm finding the tankiness/mana sustain really gives life to my early game, and I'm enjoying the build. But I don't really feel like I understand it. Maelstrom and Battlefury? Why not Daedalus instead of Maelstrom? Etc.

Check out our new Dota/anime themed wall mural (X-Post - /r/dota2)

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 03:49 PM PST

So my father-in-law is a really good artist, and he offered to paint a floor-to-ceiling mural in our office/game room with some of our favorite characters. This is how it turned out!

I apologize if parts of some pictures are blurry - it wraps around three walls, so it was hard to get everything in focus when it went around corners.

For reference, QoP's head is about 6 feet above the ground; Miku and Erza are about 7 feet tall.

left side view

right side view

QoP closeup

Axe

Undying

Erza - Fairy Tail

3-wall panorama - kinda blurry

Anyway, pretty cool to have that to look forward to every time we walk into the room!

(He did an awesome job, so I thought it was worth putting in the main Dota 2 sub, but also thought the people here might appreciate it more)

Can anyone describe the gameplay of a support who sits mid?

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 04:55 AM PST

Its super common in higher skill games and it can be super effective, I'm just curious what kind of mentality you have when doing it. Do you stay out of xp range? Do you leave for bounties and stacking? What are great heroes specifically for helping mid?

I've played a lot of rubick lately and I've found lifting their mid into mine is super powerful, but in pro games rubicks don't tend to do it too much, probably better on a hero with 2 lockdown spells at level 2?

Learning to play Dota 2 as a support/tank

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 07:41 AM PST

Hello, I'm a new player coming into Dota 2. My friends have been helping me get used to the game but I don't want to be a detriment to them so I want to absorb as my game knowledge as much as possible. I'm currently gravitating towards tanky heroes such as Dragon Knight, Bristleback and Ogre Magi because I am not a mechanically skilled person.

How do I get better towards:

  • Getting xp and gold without taking much farm from my laner? I read about stacking and pulling and I have no idea how to pull this off effectively.

  • Placement of wards, aside from ward cliffs, and dewarding?

  • Teamfighting and positioning in general. For example, as Ogre Magi, what do I do, do I stay in the back and peel for the carry or do I nuke their squishies? As Bristleback, do I go right in the middle and facetank? As Dragon Knight, do I go towards being a DPS or a tank?

  • Knowing when to get the appropriate talents and items for the benefit of my team.

Sorry if this is a wall of text. Some of the guides I read might be out of date so I figured this is a good place to start getting some fresh information.

PS: I don't really care much for stats, I just want to win.

Mastering Juggernaut for 2.5k

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 01:42 PM PST

I'm looking for a high level player who has a 2-3k MMR account that they play quite a lot, and happens to do so with Juggernaut.

I have been focusing on Juggernaut for quite a while, and I'm just looking for nuances that can help me in my bracket. If you'd be willing to share replays/tips for 2-3k, I'd be interested in seeing them.

Thanks!

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 07:08 AM PST

So, you are more the welcome to point out my abysmal lack of versatility. I'm not sure if that's a drawback or not, but I'm starting to feel like it might be. Other than than, I try hard every game, so even when I get wrecked I'm fighting it out till the bell.

If I had to analyze my own play, I think I need to chose my fights better to avoid deaths, and find more farm for myself. Item decisions need work too, but I always fall back on comfort picks.

How important is the versatility aspect to gaining MMR?

Posted: 17 Dec 2017 11:29 PM PST

In the pentagon thing when you click on someone's profile my versatility is like non existent. But I've noticed that I can compare it to someone who's like archon 5 (I'm herald 5) and I have every stat better except versatility. So I have to ask how important is it and how many heroes would you say I need to be able to play to rank up

How could I have played better as tusk this game.

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 01:26 AM PST

https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3624898506

https://www.opendota.com/matches/3624898506

I first picked tusk.

I'm trying to get into tusk because I enjoy playing the hero but unfortunaty some games dont go as planned.

My plan this was getting first blood on pangolier but due to some missplays on sven we didnt get the kill.

It resulted in enchantress dying, and he gave firstblood to pudge I believe.

eventually enchantress wasnt a threat anymore after a few minutes so the supports started to gank. after I killed pangolier I tp reacted to the lanes who needed help and turned around gank resulting in 1 for 2 and 1 for 3 trades in our favour.

I decided to get mana boots because my team needs mana in order to function and AA went tranquil boots.

I mentioned that I was going to stack a couple of times and I told sven 3-4 times that he should take the stacks with his ulti before DK or templar does.

He didnt do this. resulting in the enemy taking all the stack at 15 minutes and apparently my team got mad at me because I "stacked for them", I told them that I said to sven to take them. they still got mad at me.

So the only reason I saw us coming back into this game was going for kills since we have storm. I tried to coördinate some ganks here and there.

Is sven not able to take stacks with his ulti? ( large camp stacks small camps and ancient camps) due to their heroes I couldnt go agressive. so I invested a lot of time into stacking.

I rushed drums ( I thought my enchantress was going to do this )
and then I wanted to get medallion asap. Due to us fighting early I thought getting drums was really useful, medallion for the same reason.

What was I doing wrong and what could I have done better ?

A few tips regarding the offlane

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 02:43 AM PST

Offlane is probably one of the hardest roles in the first 10 mins. U play it wrong, u will be 0-5 by min 3 and complain that your supports are not helping you in this trilane. Let's dig a little into the position to understand it better.

Your role? Obviously, the later you go into the game, the more different your role will be depending on your hero. But let's talk about the first 10 minutes of the game. While every hero differs, the main idea is the same. Get the most out of nothing. The offlane is a lane where u will be against the enemies carry, he will prob have a support or two, and they want to have him gain as much farm as he can. This means your team can do two things. Either do the same as them on that lane, and have a bloodshed on that lane, fighting a lot for the farm, where one team will usually win the lane in the end, or do the opposite as them, and let them have that lane. But you won't let them have it for free, since there is xp on that lane, so you will put a hero there to get the exp. that's you. You want to be there, and get the xp, and NOT DIE. Dying can be super bad for you, since doing that will give the carry a big advantage, and might make it too hard to get xp after that(Even though some deaths are fine, but that's a different story.) Now, obviously you will also want farm, but that can be risky a lot of times.

As for disrupting the carried farm? A lot of times you might find an opportunity, let's say u are batrider and got 6 stacks on the carry, or both supports went mid etc, that's when u can be more aggressive, take some farm. But remember what your purpose is, and don't be too greedy.

early stage of Offlane.

Posted: 18 Dec 2017 02:06 AM PST

I play heroes like Centaur, Tidehunter, Doom, Omni, Axe, Abaddon alot

most of my problem comes from early stage of laning (before 5min) I get harassed by supports, denied and easily give lead to enemy carry.

If I'm playing heroes like Doom or Batrider most of time I play well because they can trade well with supports or can farm jungle exp but with heroes like Tide or Centaur, they seem can't do anything in level 1.

I try things like lane cutting and pulling but that doesn't do much against good players I think.

sorry for poor englando
