Theorycraft Thursday - Discuss Builds, Skills, Strategies, and More!

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 01:00 AM PST

Welcome to Theorycraft Thursday, a community-building, regularly occurring thread in the subreddit!

MMO veterans will know that Theorycrafting is the core of many discussions about this genre of games, and ESO is no different.

With the high level of variance in builds, skills, and stats, there's plenty of room for Theorycrafting, and we want to see what you have to share with the community on that front.

Have a build you've experimented with? A particular skill or set of skills that synergize well? A strategy for PvE or PvP that works to great effect? Share it here!

If you're new, you can also use this thread to ask questions about viable builds and skills as well!

As always, please keep in mind our rules on the sidebar, especially the one about 'no personal attacks, callouts, rude behavior, or other such disrespectful content'.

Disagree respectfully and know that everyone has different ideas and playstyles that suit them.

I was programmed to write posts automatically by /u/Woeler. If you have any questions or suggestions about me or my posts, please contact him.

Totally forgot how great the quests are in this game. There is some fantastic writing here. For an mmo this game has to have the least mmo type quests ever. I love stumbling across a small town and solving a mystery or helping the towns people with there issues.

Treasure Hunter Passive

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 11:44 PM PST

Ive been looking online and I cant find any definitive answers to which chests the perk actually affects.

So that bring me to my question; what chests does the passive affect?

Thank you in advance!

A Thief's Life: A compendium of tips and tricks for Sticky Fingers.

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 06:30 AM PST

Hello everyone, the more i talk about being a thief and how that has allowed me to amass a small fortune the more attention the thieve's lifestyle seems to be gaining. I've continually had people asking questions either here, or in game about what it takes to become a "Master Thief" as well as some of the tips and tricks i have learned and tested throughout my very short time playing ESO thus far.

Before throwing yourself into the fray i would suggest completing the thieves guild DLC, as well as at least obtaining the Blade of Woe through the Dark Brotherhood DLC if possible. Also for maximum effectiveness i would suggest having at least one character with champion points that you can allocate into "The Shadow" skill tree. These methods can be completed without the DLC's or CP but the gold you will be making will be less. (about 10k less.)

-"Rogue's Folio"

Below is a source that i was extremely lucky to find so early in my Career as a Thief and to those of you that haven't found this already i hope it amplifies your experience as it has mine, definitely worth reading the entire thing. This guide is masterfully done and the creator took a lot of personal time to help those of us fumbling our ways through dark alleys and running from guards with every failed attempt we encountered. http://roguesfolio.tumblr.com/Guide

Next i have only recently found a few obscure reference to "The Apple Method" of leveling your ledgermain. Most of these posts being outdated, so for those of you who are unfamiliar it is as follows.

-" The Apple Method"

If you go to Belkarth, in Craglorn and travel south, (right outside city limits.) you'll find what looks like a small apple orchard on the docks. (to the right is the out of city entrance to the thieves den.) In the orchard you will find about 25 baskets you can loot to obtain apples. Now previously these containers could reward you with up to a possibility of 5 items varying between apples and decorative wax but since this method has been discovered i'm pretty sure ZOS nerfed it because I've been using this method for a few weeks across a few alts and they now only reward 1-3 apples and NO wax.(still a valid way to quickly level your ledgermain.)

Simply steal all the apples from the containers then either relog or enter and exit the thieves guild to reset the containers.(tested 12/26/17) Rinse and repeat until you have enough apples to max out your selling and laundering option at the local thieves den. Each apple counts as a separate entity and stacks to 200. Each apple will grow your ledgermain skill by 1 point. with a little extra work you should expect your ledgermain skill to climb by about 1 point per day to a max of 20. (hover over your ledgermain's title in your skill tree to view how many points until reaching the next level.)

-Now the Facts! Gold Farming!

Thieving to farm gold is NOT the most effective gold farming method. It is however a consistent gold source that takes a lot of setup but very little work afterwards. A successful thief can easily make 20k per character per day and for some that's a consistent amount that many will be happy with. However a true "Master Thief" can make over 52.5k gold per character per day and here's how.

Skills suggested are: - Max Ledgermain skill tree with full skill points. -Max Thieves guild skill tree with max points in at least -Swiftly Forgotten and -Haggling. (would suggest all) - Invisibility either through Shadow Cloak (Nightblade move.) or potions. -Optional Rapid Maneuver or speed boost potion. - At least 10 Champion points (available after lvl 50.) in The Shadow skill line. (for the 50% more gold from containers perk.)

-Now The Math!

Relying on the Locksmith passive in your ledgermain your going to want to find a route in a suitable city, ( refer to map pages in Rogue's folio above.) that takes you to as many high level Safe boxes you can come across in the smallest amount of time. Would suggest (Harvest Maps as an addon. tracks the location of all resources including safeboxes.) Force pick each safe box with a 75% chance to pick the lock. ( almost always effective.) Forcing the lock is going to save you valuable time as well as having to pay a higher bounty. the faster you are, the less chance of you getting caught.

With the haggling Perk unlocked your going to receive 10% more gold per item through a fence, making every blue item worth 275 gold. your going to want to steal only blue items from safe boxes and sell all 140, ( max amount of sales in a day.) to the fence, resulting in 38.5k gold. the other 14k however, this comes from the chest itself. Each advanced chest or higher should have 50g-60g sitting in it, relying on the Fortune Seeker perk in The Shadow skill tree you will gain an additional 50% gold from every Treasure chest/Safebox turning that 50-60 gold coins into 100g+ per safe box looted. After looting only safe boxes and fencing only blues you will have made a full 52.5k and perhaps a little extra if you had to farm Safe boxes for blues to reach your daily limit.

I hope this guide helps some of my fellow Thieves as well as anyone interested in pursuing their criminal careers. I look forward to answering any and all questions, comments, or concerns. Please if you wish to expand upon something or provide more information feel free to do so. I am in no way an expert and would appreciate any and all information concerning the life of a thief that may be more up to date than my own.

I wish you all the best of luck! Happy Thieving!

New to the game!

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 10:35 PM PST

Greetings friends! I have recently joined the game PC-NA and I do not know what I am doing! But I am sure as hell having fun doing it.

I like to challenge myself, and this is one of those games that I can do that with, so many options and only 5 slots to put abilities into. I am having a fun time playing around with the different options to learn about the game. I have no intention of raiding or doing high end dungeons, at least for now, so I just have fun playing around and learning how the different abilities work individually and how they work in chains.

I've made 4 characters I am having fun with (and two characters I am using for mules right now until I sub on payday) Argonian Templar 1H+Shield, Khajiit Warden Bow, Redguard Nightblade DW, and Dark Elf Dragonknight Fire Staff. The two that are currently mules but will play down the line is my High Elf Sorcerer and Breton Templar Healer.

Not met any mean or rude people or anything, which is odd thing to see being used to the rudeness of people from other MMOs.

Bots on PS4

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 03:28 PM PST

While doing the Life Festival daily quests I encountered an absurd amount of Sorcerer's all with pets using the same spells at the same exact moment, killing wolves at Bethik. I didn't know bots were possible on console. Is this something very frequently encountered on ESO? I have video evidence but it's on my console, if someone really wants to look at it then I'll post it.

Thinking of offering this game to some friends. Would like your thoughts.

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:19 AM PST

Hello everyone!

I'm a new-ish player myself (only started a little more than a month ago), but I'm obviously enjoying myself A LOT in this game. I've already managed to convince a friend of mine to join - she has been longing for an MMO again and when I saw her join her old MMO game - I told her that if she wanted to play a game (either MMO or solo) might as well be a game of quality! That's ESO! :D

Anywho... to the subject at hand. I was thinking of offering this game to 2 people - and I'd like to get your thoughts on this, because it might seem like I'm "forcing" them too hard.

Okay - so the first person I've thought of was my older brother. He has loved both Oblivion and Skyrim just like me. And he has also played some WoW just like me. So I am pretty certain he will love this thing.

But the thing is, that's a while ago - ever since then he has had a kid (let's just say that the kid can be... demanding of her parents' attention) and is more busy in life in general (he's doing really well in life - but with that comes more responsibility and less free time). But he's still a gamer at heart.

Also, he lives in Asia, whereas I'm in Europe.

Second person - It's a gamer friend of mine. He can be sort of an MMO hater (I think it's just by principle, because he admitted to me that he has actually tried WoW trial and liked his adventures there - and he had considered playing ESO trial). I am really not sure he will like this kind of game or commit to it. But he's a very good friend and we click on a lot of levels. We just don't have a "common game" right now though. I was thinking this might be it. He might change his mind.

To top it off: The game is on sale right now. Base game is like 10 bucks, so I guess even if it doesn't pan out - it's not as if I threw a huge investment out of the window right? What do you guys think?

How connect steam to my non-steam account?

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 04:16 AM PST

I have the non steam edition from 2014, got it when it first came out. I have later bough morrowind and most of the dlc's seperatly on this account.

My question is: If I buy the standard edition on steam and log into my old account, will I have access to everything I have bought? Including my non-steam morrowind? Can I now use steam to buy crowns and eso + for that account ?

ESO Fashion - Appearance Category Suggestion Request

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 08:24 AM PST

One of the things I've really wanted to add to ESO Fashion, but never got around to doing is filterable appearance categories allowing you to search for a particular item style. For instance, if you wanted to know which helmets have horns or which sets have sandals and fingerless gloves, you would be able to check some boxes on the sidebar filter and those posts will show. This would make the site a much better tool for mixing and matching sets to create unique character styles.

To do this, I need to come up with a list of categories first and then update each post so I don't have to re-update a post every time I think of a new category. I've started working on some possibilities and would like your feedback on which categories you would find useful. The more categories I create, the better the filter will be, but it will also take me more time to update the posts so the filter will pull everything up.

I've broken the categories into three main sections: Overall Appearance, Armor, and Weapons. Overall will be applicable to the entire set so I don't have to tag a post multiple times with the same category indicating all pieces have that look. Armor and Weapons are broken out into the individual components of the set, but I haven't actually started creating weapon categories yet.

My plan is to work this exclusively for the rest of the week in the hopes I'll finish before the next update hits the PTS and I have to concentrate on those updates instead.

Battle Music Rant

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 05:47 PM PST

I know I may be in the minority here, but I cannot stand the battle music. I wish I could keep on the background music without having to endure the booming drums every time.

I love the score so much. All of it. It seems so stupid to be annoyed by one piece of it, but my only wish would be an option to turn it off without turning off ALL music.

Anyone feel similarly?

Help with grinding dwemer motifs and grinding motifs in general.

Posted: 27 Dec 2017 11:40 PM PST

So, I'm a completionist so felt the need to finally start grinding some motifs. Compared to some of the other ones such as glass or xivkyn, dwemer seemed like a relatively easy grind...

But dear Magnus I hate it. Endlessly running around, looting urns, pots and jugs has driven me slightly mad. Does anyone have some tips to make grinding dwemer and other rare motifs a little more bareable? Because my own sanity is at stake here.

Looking for more customization.

Posted: 28 Dec 2017 03:04 AM PST

I'm looking for a more customized look but the Crown Store has nothing for a Heavy Armor class for cosmetics. With that said I could always settle on dyes but then any dyes sold in the crown store only work on costumes and hats. I suppose it doesn't matter that much I'm only leveling, but I'd love a reason to spend more money to support the game. Perhaps playing Fashion Wars 2 for so many years has changed my aesthetic, this isn't a deal breaker by any means I'd just like to have some control over my look and not be limited to costumes for Wizards/Nightblades etc.

Other than that I'm enjoying the hell out of this game!

While leveling are their abilities that would help me kill things faster as a Dragon Knight, I'm using Sword/Shield, I've invested all my points into Stamina (for lvling only), I'm following the tank route but I'm focusing on unlocking all the abilities I can.
