/r/Civ Weekly Questions Thread - December 13, 2017

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 02:10 AM PST

Greetings r/Civ.

Welcome to the Weekly Questions thread. Got any questions you've been keeping in your chest? Need some advice from more seasoned players? Conversely, do you have in-game knowledge that might help your peers out? Then come and post in this thread. Don't be afraid to ask. Post it here no matter how silly sounding it gets.

To help avoid confusion, please state for which game you are playing.

In addition to the above, we have a few other ground rules to keep in mind when posting in this thread:

  • Be polite as much as possible. Don't be rude or vulgar to anyone.
  • Keep your questions related to the Civilization series.
  • The thread should not be used to organize multiplayer games or groups.

Finally, if you wish to read the previous Weekly Questions threads, you can now view them here.

The Mother Russia ability made my city's borders look like Vietnam, whilst land-grabbing a luxury from a city state's island. Impressive!

This probably isn't final, but the odds of Afghanistan, the Hittites, Switzerland, and Argentina appearing in Rise and Fall have gone down considerably...

I finally realized what it is about Civ6's policy cards that rub me the wrong way - it no longer feels like skill points in an RPG

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 11:38 AM PST

I like roleplaying when playing Civ - and I think many other people are drawn to the series for that reason as well. My civ is my character and my decisions define that character.

In Civ5, investing in a social policy defined your civilization. These were big choices that fleshed out who you were as a people - your history all playing a part in the overall image of your culture. In Civ6 you can completely change these decisions incredibly often - suddenly, everything that you have been matters not at all (well, except for the tiny persistent bonuses) as you completely whip your entire civilization into an entirely different thing.

The ability to respec (redo of your skill points) in an RPG is usually a biggish deal / hassle, a thing you can do once or twice in an entire playthrough.

I sincerely hope that they overhaul the policy card system at some point.

Not particularly fond of the governors

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 04:53 PM PST

It's not because of the art style. The art style's fine. It's because they half assed them. Everyone gets the same 7 governors, so there are multiple clones of the same 7 seven people all over the map, who don't in any way represent their civilizations. They should have used medallions like they did for great people. I can imagine it will break immersion a little to be playing as Japan, but you have an African governor after you've only ever met China and Poland

Why Mustafa Kemal's Turkey should be one of the new civs.

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 02:44 AM PST

First of all, let me start off by saying that me being Turkish has absolutely nothing to do with my opinion. I hope so anyways.

I think Mustafa Kemal's Turkey perfectly represents the new mechanics brought to us by this new expansion. But first, some context.

Mustafa Kemal was the creator of the Republic of Turkey, and the ruler of the country from the birth of it in 1923 until his untimely death in 1938. He fought in the first World War, from the hard-fought battles in modern-day Libya, to the heroic defense of the Dardanelles. He started the nationalist revolution against the struggling Ottoman Empire starting in 1919 in Samsun, and he finalized this movement by creating the Turkish Grand National Assembly in the soon-to-be capital Ankara, in 1920; traveling to 5 cities, issuing circulars and holding congresses towards the unification of the nation against the invading Alliance. This movement was supported by a majority of the citizens, marking the beginning of the process of the independence movement called Kuva-yi Milliye. His leadership and foresight have led the nation to gain their independence and the creation of the Republic of Turkey as we know today.

Now, let me explain why Mustafa Kemal's Turkey is the perfect civ to add to this expansion.

Kuva-yi Milliye and the birth of the nation from the ashes of the fallen Ottoman Empire perfectly represents the Dark Age-Heroic Age mechanic of the game. Also, his reforms and cultural development of the country was quite impactful towards the bordering countries of Turkey, which correlates to the Loyalty and the national influence mechanics added.

AI abuses Joint Wars

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 04:52 PM PST

I was thinking about maybe posting on this subject, and then it came up in the Dev stream, so I felt I had to. Right now, in every game I play, the AI just straight up abuses joint wars. Because it counts as a "formal war", they seem to get reduced warmonger penalties, and it also means I have never seen an AI use an actual casus belli. Why declare a surprise war when you can just get a joint war with an automatic ally? I think this is mainly coming from the AI really liking to trade for a joint war - they'll ask me for so much gold and resources in exchange for a joint war with someone else, which means to me that they're doing the same thing with the other AI. While I can appreciate the need for a "joint war" ability, my main problems with it are:

  • It counts as a formal war. Just because you brought a buddy along, that doesn't mean the war is justified. Joint wars should still be surprise wars.
  • Its existence means you can't ask a player to join a war after it has started. In V, you could do trade deals to ask another civ to go to war with yet another civ, but there is no real way to do that in VI except through a joint war. So if I'd really like some help defending against all these joint wars, it's impossible for me to ask a friendly AI to come assist me.

Seriously. Every game, it's just one joint war after another. Stop it.

How do YOU play Civ?

Posted: 13 Dec 2017 12:14 PM PST

I have difficulty staying patient with civ. I love this game. But I never play any games slower than "quick" game speed, or any more difficult than "Prince". I find myself really just enjoying the empire building, growth, and fighting barbarians, without focusing too much on any one aspect, and in doing so I feel like I'm not quite fully playing the game.

I'm wondering what steps you all take starting a game. Do you choose a civ based on what kind of victory you plan on achieving? do you not even think about that until you see how a game goes? Do you focus most/all of your efforts towards that goal (like, skipping out on basically all culture bonuses when trying to win a domination victory). Do you plan out your turns? I find myself just going with the flow, and choosing productions based on whats going on, but sometimes I find that I pretty much maxed everything and I just build things because I need to fill the queue (Like, if i'm going for a culture victory, and a city has all of the culture type buildings ill just build whatever). Do you keep in mind about resources, and switch population around? I find that I'm too lazy to bother... and most games go fast enough that I won't need to.

Also, HOW DO YOU GET OTHER CIVS TO LIKE YOU!? They always seem to hate me, go to war with me, disregard me. Should I care? I havent even TRIED to get a victory through diplomacy because fuck that... Diplomatic relations are incredibly difficult...

Any thoughts? Thanks!
