Rewatch Plup's upset on Armada in VR from the crowd

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 03:52 PM PST

For first time, Bayonetta breaches 10% results coverage at tournaments. Cloud approaches same milestone.

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 05:41 PM PST

I will be doing a large post on character results across 2017 during the PGR offseason in December (including some statistics that are better put together), but I recently completed all October work and decided to share this as a meta update.

Methodology

Same as always, documented in detail here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Jks0EtmeNemKsm2rXzYf8RB3D43-Ru23ypx_DOnQPDY/edit#

Character data is the most pertinent section here.

For a list of tournaments used, see:

https://smashboards.com/threads/tournament-placing-database-scoring-project.437773/

The methodologies for character data collection in 2016 and 2017 were somewhat different. The main difference with 2017 is that a larger number of tournaments are recorded, while most of the recorded results tend to be low-scoring Top 4 events. Majors continue to have the largest pool of points.

A "local" or very small under-80 entrant regional (Category 1, counts Top 4) has a total point pool of at least 10, possibly more depending on secondaries. For comparison's sake, Category 5, the largest possible event definition, has a point pool of at least 476 points.

You can see this influence in January of this year where Bayonetta did particularly well at covering spots at GENESIS 4, but she declines from a 9.5% then record high to around 8% by the end of the first phase of 2017.

Every new phase marks a total score reset on every character. I have long-term tracking as well for both years and a combination of both years.

The "Phases" were iffy to begin with due to 1.1.5/1.1.6 dropping and my reset policy for when things updated. Starting in 2017, barring any further patches, I run in 4-month cycles. At the end of those four months, I reset the character scores.

TRACKING BAYONETTA'S PERCENTAGES

PHASE 1

March 15th - May 15th - 1.1.5 (Start of Data Collection) - 8.9%

PHASE 2

May 15th - July 1st - Start of 1.1.6 - 3.4%

July 2016 - 3.7%

August 2016 - 3.5%

PHASE 3

September 2016 - 6.2%

October 2016 - 6.8%

November 2016 - 7.1%

December 2016 - 6.6%

PHASE 4

January 2017 - 9.5%

February 2017 - 7.9%

March 2017 - 8.1%

April 2017 - 8.0%

PHASE 5

May 2017 - 8.2%

June 2017 - 8.5%

July 2017 - 8.9%

August 2017 - 9.5%

START OF PHASE 6

September 2017 - 9.0%

October 2017 - 10.9%

It should be noted that Cloud approaches the same 10% mark. No character until now in the Top 16 Weighted (2016 primary method) or the current 2017 method had ever broken 10% coverage until now.

On a pie chart, it looks like this:

https://i.imgur.com/7CKxtVK.png - For September & October.

This is halfway into the phase with the addendum that December will be quiet compared to most events since the bulk of it exists in an off season.

There is also a trend to suggest that character diversity itself is on a decline:

"Other" composition by end of Phase 4 - 10.5%

"Other" composition by the end of Phase 5 - 10%

"Other" composition halfway through Phase 6 - 7.8%

"Other" is a stat on the pie charts made due to space reasons. I document 29 characters + Other.

Now, Bayonetta's leap in October doesn't appear to be at the expense of "Other" - Other remained at 7.8% for both months, meaning both Cloud and Bayonetta are at a record high at the expense of characters that exist on that chart.

September chart, for comparison: https://i.imgur.com/H3SHZcz.png

Starts of Phases can also be very mixed in terms of accuracy. You usually need a couple of months to get a good idea of what's happening across the metagame since certain character mains may not attend often. Shulk was in the back for quite a while but has moved back up with Nicko & Kome active, for example, and made one of his very few ever appearances in the Top 30.

However, I think looking at her history, there's definitely a trend line going upwards. She is more popular and meta-relevant now than she was during her release.

Ranking This Year's Smash 64 Players

Posted: 18 Nov 2017 10:01 AM PST

I'd say this is one of (if not the) hardest years to rank even a top 10 as far as 64 players go, and we've seen a lot of contention for top spots. What do you guys think the top 10 (and beyond) is gonna look like this year? Personally I'd say:

  • 1. Fukurou - I'd say a pretty clear number 1 this year. Has a crazy win streak this year and has beaten Kurabba, Alvin, Wangera, Boom, and many others. His only losses this year are to Wangera at SmashCon (who he proceeded to beat in losers) and a rather strange loss to Gerson at UFSmash 3, but Gerson is a bit of a wild card this year due to low attendance.
  • 2. Alvin - First at every tournament he's attended this year except for SmashCon and Shine. Notably lost at those tournaments to LD (Sleepy Fox) and Wizzrobe respectively, two fairly bad losses considering his rank. Even with that he's a favorite to take any event he attends.
  • 3. SuPeRbOoMfAn - Pretty clearly top 3, a pillar of consistency and his crazy amount of attendance reinforces it. He farms anyone that isn't Alvin or Japan's elite, and has shown he can beat anyone.
  • 4. Kurabba - Kurabba is odd to rank because he does have some iffy placements at Kansai 2017 as well as Japan Smash Cup 2017. But his insane performances in the second half of the year can't be ignored. It seems like the only person that can stop him at this point is Fukurou and kysk, as he beat Isai, Boom, Wangera, and wario all at SmashCon alone, and took second at Autumn Kanto Tournament behind kysk, but once again outplacing wario.
  • 5. kysk - kysk is odd to rank because he only attended one tournament outside of Japan this year, but while there he 3-0'd Mariguas and Wizzrobe to take third at Genesis 4 behind Alvin and Boom. In Japan he's shown to be quite a force, as he's taken first at two Japan majors this year, outplacing the likes of Kurabba, wario and Wangera, and performed well at the others.

From here on I'm a bit more unsure and there's a lot to discuss about it, but imo it's:

  • 6. wario - Much worse placings than last year, but looking at his losses are important. He placed 9th at Kanto 2017 AND SmashCon, BUT his losses between those two tournaments are Kurabba 3 times, and Alvin once. Not bad losses at all. I think we could still see wario be a strong contender for winning majors in 2017, hopefully he can attend more.
  • 7. Wangera - Wangera hasn't seen any first places in 2017, but consistently finds his way into the top 8 of any event he enters. Beat Fukurou at SmashCon which is a great win for him but lost to Kurabba and Fukurou in the runback.
  • 8. Wizzrobe - Wizzrobe has found himself at a lot of second places (usually due to Boom) but has had a great year overall with fifth at SmashCon, Genesis 4, and good performances at many NA tournaments, especially Shine 2017 which he took first at over Alvin, a huge win for him.
  • 9. Mariguas - Consistently makes top 8's and has great wins with a set win over Fukurou, TheZ, and beats players below him pretty consistently.
  • 10. Dext3r - Honestly 10th may be a bit too low for Dext3r, but he hasn't really broken into the upper echelon and shown he can beat the best of the best this year. Despite that, he has placed top 4 at every event he's attended with the exception of SmashCon. He got 13th at SmashCon, but in all fairness his bracket luck was pretty bad, losing to Wangera and Alvin (not at all bad losses).

Here's some notable sets this year of these players:

Let me know if any other sets are important enough to include in your guy's opinions.

This post ended up being way longer than intended, and there are a few players that I'm not really sure how to rank (notably Moyashi, Isai and Gyaki) but this is what I'd put as the top 10 for the year. It's been a wild one and going into Genesis 5 is a really exciting storyline, I honestly don't know who will win it. Hopefully the 64 league makes a ranking again like they did for this year, but we can include a lot more Japanese players this time around!
