Past Q&A Megathreads

Known bugs (some have possibly been fixed):

See here for Niantic-recognized bugs.

  • New: Shadow-Bans If you have ever used a third-party service (such as an IV checker) that required you to log into your Pokemon Go account, and/or you have ever received a warning message about unauthorized access, you may have recently been "shadow-banned". You can still play the game like normally, but only common Pokemon will show up and you will not see "rare" spawns while others will. You will need to remove any such services, revoke their authorizations, change your password, etc. Roughly a week after doing so, people have reported the shadow-bans being lifted for legitimate players.

  • New in 0.59.1 The Pokédex displays genders for Pokémon you have caught, if applicable. However, code for genders was only added sometime in December/January. Any Pokémon caught/evolved prior to that will have a (randomly assigned?) gender in the Inventory, but will not properly display the gender in the Pokédex.

  • Sometimes while the game is loading it will get stuck on a white screen. This seems to be due to an anti-bot "Captcha" screen that didn't load correctly, and can usually be fixed by restarting the app.

  • There is a bug with the GPS not connecting properly, which results in nearby Pokémon spawns disappearing for a few minutes.

  • The game will randomly crash sometimes. Having the most updated version of the app and the most updated version of your operating system tends to minimize this, but it still happens.

  • There are graphical glitches sometimes where a Pokémon will spawn as a "miniature" version of itself. If you restart the app and are still close enough, it should reappear normally and be clickable.

  • There is a bug sometimes while battling a gym if you don't have a great connection. If you dodge an attack that would otherwise kill you, sometimes the game won't register the dodge and your Pokémon will "faint". Then the game will sync with the server and undo the damage that you dodged, but your Pokémon still shows as fainted and you can't actually attack.

  • If phone time is not set to Automatic, Incense and Lures may not work properly. Fix this by setting time to Automatic (in your phone's Time/Date settings)

[Complaint] Raids have not been adjusted for end of DST

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 03:35 PM PST

New York City player here. Until today, the last raids always ended just before 7:45PM. Right now it's 6:30 and I just watched the last few nearby raid timers count to 0.

I always thought 7:45 was too early to end raids (and the last time I visited California, they were going well past 8pm), but 6:30??? Come on! Even less people will be able to do raids after work now.

[Idea] Ways in which I think this game could be better monetized, which players would enjoy as well

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 10:02 AM PST

  1. Vanity items. People chase the hell out of pikcahus and pichus with special hats, and other products (e.g. Star Wars The Old Republic) seem to nearly entirely fund themselves on the vanity purchases which don't affect gameplay. Let us put an eyepatch on our chansey, let us put a bow on our pikachu. Just sell the item as something which some pokemon can wear, and let external sites deal with listing which ones. Put it in a secondary tab or the end of the bag which doesn't count towards storage.

  2. Cheaper pokeballs. I regularly run out of pokeballs due to location, and have very occasionally bought balls for events. However I am quite sure that if I could get 100 for $2 I would do it far too regularly, calling it my gym fee. There's a point where it's just comfortable to cross over into spending money. $4.6 is too much, $2 is easy to do far more than I probably should.

  3. A solo legendary raid option. I can't really do legendary raids without a car and without even being able to see any gyms from my house. Occasionally I do huge walks, mostly during events, which take me to where a lot of stops and gyms are, usually 3-5 hours at least. If I could raid during these walks, I'd probably have done it every month per legendary and hit up many raids per day since it's the only time I can, which would have necessitated buying passes. It seems like you could just set a minimum difficulty per raid tier, quite a difficult solo at say level 30 for tier 5, then scale it up per extra person and their level/pokemon who joins, making it always better to have more, but doable by yourself if you're strategic about it, just like tier 3, which is precisely what's just brought me back to the game after finishing my non-raid/non-regional dex. These long term strategic goals are fantastic draws.

Is there any way to get a pokemon out of a remote gym that no one goes to?

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 11:41 AM PST

My best pokemon is stuck in a gym 40km outside of a city. I was stupid and put it in there at the start of a Halloween event I was there for. It's been there for like 2 weeks now and I believe they have hosted their last event for the year :/

Bring back Magikarp, Exeggutor, & Rhydon

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 02:15 AM PST

Magikarp, Exeggutor, Vaporeon, and Rhydon should have all been held over as they are all more interesting than many of the new bosses. I think the removal of Exeggutor is the biggest let down, because it is much more useful given the new raids.

I'm glad they kept Tyranitar and Machamp.

EX Raid Pass distribution study in Águeda (Portugal)

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 07:53 AM PST

Due to the fact the we are a small community, I made a google spreadsheet, where we register all the raids made by the members of the community and in which day they successfully complete a Raid, across all the gym in the city (10 gym's total). With to this effort, we've received the 1st wave of EX Raid (October 1st) and now, the 3rd wave (November 11th).

Thanks to this control, this was the information collected:

The 1st was in the gym with the most trainers "registered" (30 trainers), to which were invited all the 30 trainers that completed a raid in that gym (Legendary or not), between September 3rd and September 25th. Levels: 40, 40, 39, 39, 39, 38, 37, 36, 36, 35, 35, 35, 34, 34, 33, 33, 32, 32, 32, 32, 31, 30, 30, 30, 29, 28, 28, 28, 26 and 25. Average Level: 33,2

The 3rd wave will take place (again) in the gym with the most trainers "registered" (50, within one month), to which were invited 15 players from 2 specific raids.

-1st Raid: took place in October 29th (Suicune), with 28 participants, divided in two lobbies. From this raid, were selected 10 out of 28 that participated (35,7%).

-2nd Raid: took place November 1st (Raikou), with 14 participants in a unique lobby. From this raid, were selected 5 out of 14 that had participated (35,7%). Levels: 34, 34, 33, 32, 32, 32, 29, 28, 28, 28, 26, 23, 21, 21 and 20. Average level: 28,1

4 out of 15 invited, received their 2nd EX Raid Pass, in Águeda. 11 were invited for the 1st time. 6 of those 15 players, only made one of these 2 specific raids within a month.

All the players above 34 that contributed in those 2 selected raids (7 players), that are also the most active, were left out (inclusive me [Lvl 40], that was the only one who participated in the both of them, 10/29 and 11/1).

Conclusions from this study:

The 1st wave served to find out how many players, with a raid completed in certain gym, in a period of time relatively expense, would be present in the EX Raid, even though a part of them didn't make another raid in that specific gym for almost a month.

The 3rd wave served to find out how many players (from a small group, with lower levels), with a raid completed in that gym recentely (4 days before the invitation dropped), will be present in the EX Raid and if they will be able to conclude that raid with success (due to the low levels). Note: 35,7% were the percentage of players chosen from the both raids to receive the EX Raid Pass.

Personal observation: In my modest opinion, I think that both Field Tests had the objective of testing the viability of doing EX Raids, in locations with a limited number of players. And the concrete objective of both of them were to find out if is more viable to choose between a big group of players that have made a Raid in a gym in a long period of time, or in a short period of time with raids completed recently by a small number of players. The 1st test was less selective and rigorous than the 3rd, due to the requirements.

Note: The players that use to spend money in the game were left out, in the 3rd Wave.

[Idea] Trainer title

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 10:08 AM PST

We all have gold medals for something (types, dex, fightings), why don't make it possible to choose from those titles and use with your nickname? Like it was in the original games — Yougster Tina, Battle girl Michael and so on. I think it would be pretty cool and interesting.

[Idea] Why can’t we choose a new starter Pokémon when a new generation is released?

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 07:33 PM PST

I believe that it would be fairly easy to do, and can be fun for some of the younger players.

What Pokemon have you powered up over 3000? Which ones are you working on powering up to 3000-ish?

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 06:13 PM PST

So what Pokemon has everyone powered up over 3000? My list is pretty standard I think, I've got 3 Tyranitars, 3 Dragonite, 1 Rhydon, 2 Vaporeon and 2 Gyrados (1 of them is a shiny).

The ones I'm working on getting to 3000 are Zapdos, Lugia, another Rhydon, and possibly Snorlax and Blissey. After that I'm not sure who I'd power up that high, maybe another Lugia, one with Sky Attack.

Do's and don't for a future double exp event

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 02:30 PM PST

I've picked pokemon GO again late august(lvl 18) and recently hit lvl 33.

People around me are speculating there might be another double exp event at thanksgiving and since i wasn't around during previous 2x exp events i'm wondering what I should think about in preperation for a double exp event. What should I do or not do?

[discussion] Raids are now 45 minutes?

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 10:44 PM PDT

WTF? Who was asking for less time?

This is a really player-hostile change by cutting the actual available time to fight.

A 30-minute egg and 90 minute boss would be so much better.

New item drop: Raid time bonus

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 08:13 AM PST

What if there was a new item drop which extended the time you had in a raid? (Say 30~60 seconds) It would help rural players and add a new challenge for the pros by enabling them to solo some tier 4~5 Pokémon. I think it would be easier to implement aswell, and I'm sure you could purchase them in the shop, what do you think?

Legendary Gym Leaders

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 05:52 PM PST

I have an idea for some immersive solo content that I think Pokémon Go players are desperately craving.

For one month out of every year a local gym in every major city would host a legendary gym leader event. The first year would feature the Kanto gym leaders. In January and February you be able to fight Brock and Misty, respectively. In March, Lt. Surge would be available. If you beat each boss you would collect their canon gym badge. Then each month starting in September, you could battle Lorelei, Bruno, Agatha, and finally Lance in December.

Players could win big prizes for winning badges, like coins, TMs, Incubators, storage upgrades, and most importantly bragging rights.

[discussion] Got sniped by a bunch of spoofers today. How do I stop it happening again?

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 10:06 AM PST

So today I spent probably 15 minutes fighting a gym down from 6 players to 0, and was healing my pokemon before adding them when suddenly the gym was red and there was a dragonite on it. Went to battle but PoGo selected 6 shit mons to fight, so I started switching them out, and then bam, 3 pokemon. Finished switching out, suddenly there were 5 pokemon on the gym. The gym is next to a busy road, no pedestrians in sight.

I screenshotted their usernames but then remembered Niantic don't give a shit about spoofing so I just walked away.

I was under the impression that there is a grace period to prevent sniping - how long is it? Maybe I was just too slow.

We need to do something about the stardust situation, Niantic

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 03:31 PM PST

Why is it so hard to power up Pokémon? And why are we given scraps? 100 Stardust per catch when it costs upwards of 2500 per power up?
Can we maybe get a new berry that increases Stardust when catching a Pokémon?

Error 26 on Legendary Raid

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 10:27 AM PST

Hello Guys! 2 hours ago i participated in Raikou Raid. It was my 5th raid that day(4th premium raid pass), we defeated it succesfully, but unfortunately "Error 26" happened to me, when it came to catching Raikou. Error was poping right after a ball hit Beast, causing me to be kicked out of catching window. After restarting PoGo i decided to record it, so you can see how it looked like below: https://youtu.be/9M10celsT_w Unfortunately for me, this error didnt disappear 'magically', so i wasn't able to catch Raikou at all. Whats more, i didnt get any candies, potions, revives etc. There's nothing about getting that items, or Raikou running away in my Journal history(https://imgur.com/a/C4Go5). But my Premium Raidpass, which i bought for real cash half ago earlier, was used. So my question is: Is there a chance go get my Premium Raidpass back? Or writing to Niantic about that situation is pointless, cause they won't do anything?

Whatsmore. This happened to me and some other guy at the same time, at the same raid. I went to another Raikou Raid 1hour later, and 'Error 26' didnt occure.

[Question] Tier 4 new/current raids doable with 3 ppl?

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 04:08 PM PST

So I'm trying to help my friends out that recently returned to the game after a long time.

They're lvl 28 and 26 and I'm 36.

Do you think there are any lvl 4 current raids that you think/know we'd be able to do?

What if the raid timer counted up?

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 07:33 AM PST

This is just a thought I had which I thought could help balance the raid experience for city and rural players and also help players from minority teams. An attempt would fail if the individual or group didn't get this boss down before the raid is to end. However, where as a team can 3 man a suicune in 5 min someone may try to solo and get it down in 15 min.

How would groups work? If one set up a private lobby anyone with the code could join regardless of how far along to raid a has progressed with a limit of 20 players still. One would only get credit for the actual damage dealt. Some may get mad that the raid was started before they got there but they could solo instead of joining the group.

Rewards would be doled out in bundles based how quickly the boss is defeated. In the case of the 3 man (disregarding gym control and assuming all same team) under the current system they receive 12 and let's say 9 reward bundles a piece. Instead for a lvl 5 raid anyone defeating suicune in 5 min would receive 27 bundles. As this is impossible solo these bundles would be distributed proportionately to the damage dealt and team contribution. Balls and rewards would be given based on gym control as well.

A raid defeated in 15 min would only dole out 9 bundles to the team. But one strong player in a rural community could solo and receive the reward due her without needing to move to a metropolis.

While the lvl 3 solo competition may not be as intense anymore players would compete for reward break points and try to be the first guys to get 10 bundles or something like that.

Low level players would not have as big a negative impact on rewards as they simply move the entire group into a new bundle range by enabling the boss to be defeat in that much less time.

[Idea] Have a medal for unique Raid Pokemon defeated.

Posted: 05 Nov 2017 04:24 PM PST

This would give something for people to work towards, and it would surely cause Niantic to sell more raid passes. Win win for everyone. Maybe have another medal for Raid Bosses soloed too. These medals could possibly result in extra balls/rewards too.
