Why not have a votekick button in the SCOREBOARD so we can kick those nasty hackers?

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 12:41 PM PST

You know when you try to votekick a hacker in your casual, or even a competitive game, but their name looks either exactly like someone else's? Valve should add a votekick button from the scoreboard, along with the community profile and community message buttons, so that you never have to worry about votekicking the wrong person. Just a simple thought that I don't think anyone has thought of yet.

How the Current ESEA League Division Model is Hurting the Competitive Scene

Posted: 29 Nov 2017 04:14 PM PST

Overview

  • The lower divisions of the ESEA NA CS:GO league are not balanced
  • The Open division has sort of become a black hole that swallows up new promising teams
  • The current division promotions and relegations are the prime contributing factor to this
  • Some simple changes to this system will help keep young promising teams alive and spur new talent to develop

The Issue of Balance
The main reason you have different divisions is to provide a competitive environment for players/teams of varying skill. If we took the extreme example of putting all teams from Open through Professional into one division, it would prevent a lot of players/teams from improving and would ruin the competitive scene. This is essentially the biggest gripe about smurfs. They ruin the experience for their lesser skilled opponents.

There is a huge disparity between the amount of teams in Open vs the amount in IM. Here are the numbers for Season 25:

  • 933 teams in Open
  • 146 teams in IM
  • 97 teams in Main
  • 64 teams from Open promoted to IM or higher - That's 6.86% of Open teams
  • 16 teams from IM promoted to Main or higher - That's 10.96% of IM teams

Just looking at these numbers alone should raise some concerns about the current structure. Out of 933 teams, only 64 are worthy to make it out of the lowest tier? Even looking at the percentages, a larger percentage of teams in IM advance (10.96%) compared to Open (6.86%). - You'd think it would be easier to advance from the lowest tier but that does not appear to be the case. You have to make it to the third round of playoffs in Open to get promoted.

The reason why this hurts the scene is b/c it causes new, promising, young teams to disband. To illustrate this, I followed up on the teams from S25 who made it to Open playoffs, won in the 1st round, but lost in the 2nd. The following is a table showing the teams' post-season placement, name (linked to their page), their S25 regular season record, and if they played in Season 26.

As you can see, those were good teams but out of the 64, less than a third of them (29.7%) actually played the next season. However, if you were an IM team and had a record of at least 3 wins, you got to stay in IM for the next season. In case you didn't process that; if you were an IM team that lost 3x as much as you won, you got to stay in IM, but if you were an Open team with a 12-4 record who went 1-1 in playoffs, you're clearly not IM material and should stay in Open… Does anyone reading this actually believe that those 64 teams listed above could not compete in IM, let alone compete with the IM teams that lost 3x as many games as they won?

The saddest part about this is that over 2/3rds of those teams no longer play together. For those of you who've played in ESEA League for a few seasons, you are probably aware of the volatility of team rosters and no doubt, this contributes to it. You have these new teams who start out the season with a lot of motivation/drive who end up going through the grind of learning how to play off their new teammates, coming up with setups/strats, only to not make it past the first two rounds of playoffs and not get promoted to IM; which tends to kill any drive they had remaining. I know numerous people who can't stand the thought of having to grind out another season of Open so they just don't even play in the league anymore.

I think some simple changes to the promotions and relegations will help out a lot. Here are the proposed changes:

  • For Open, teams only need to make it past the 1st round of playoffs to be guaranteed a spot in at least IM next season - If your team made it to playoffs and past the 1st round, you're clearly better than a vast majority of the Open teams and deserve a shot at IM.
  • For IM, teams that have 4 or less wins will be moved down to Open - I'm sorry, but if you've lost at least 3x as much as you've won, you probably need to get relegated.

These changes will allow for 128 teams from Open to advance to IM or higher with 112 going to IM and the top 16 go to Main or higher. If these changes took into effect last season, those 64 teams listed above would have all been given the chance to compete in IM. Who knows how many of them would have actually stayed together but I'd bet it would have been much higher than 29.7% of them.

I want to address some of the most common criticisms that I'm sure people will have to the proposed changes mentioned above.

Adding 112 teams to IM every season is going to make that division too large
Yes, IM will get much larger but I do not think there is any problem with that. Open had 933 & 838 teams in seasons 25 and 26 while IM only had 146 & 143 and Main had 97 & 113. There is too much of a drop off in the number of teams from Open to IM and I do not think this is an accurate reflection of the skill difference between these two divisions.

If the change was put into effect this season, 112 Open teams would go to IM but 20 IM teams (about 14% of the total) would get relegated leaving a net gain of 92 teams. If we assume that the bottom 14% of IM each season would get relegated, the growth rate of IM would be projected to look like the following for the next five seasons: (These numbers are just estimates.)

Season # Of Teams
27 235
28 314
29 382
30 440
31 490

The IM division will see some serious growth initially but it will taper off after the first few seasons this change takes place due to the number of teams being promoted from Open staying at a fixed number (112), while the amount of teams getting relegated will tend to increase each season.

Almost 500 teams in IM by Season 31! You're watering down the division!
First off, that is just a ballpark number and there might be more than the bottom 14% that have 4 wins or less in the future meaning a smaller net gain. For example, the bottom 23% of S26 Open have 4 wins or less. I realize Open will probably always have a higher % of these teams b/c of the extra amount of dead teams but it's likely that for some seasons of IM, the relegation will be between 14-23%. Thus, a smaller net gain going into the next season from the previous.

Secondly and probably even more important, you have to remember the teams that we are allowing to get promoted to IM. We're just adding in those extra 64 teams that made it out of 1st round of playoffs but lost in the 2nd round. Take a look again above at their records…these are not just your average Open teams we're talking about. They will be good competition for IM teams.

The top 16 in Open don't deserve to be Main, you're just watering down that division as well
I saw comments like this on the S26 Move Ups and Down page and it's based more off an emotional reaction vs reality. So lets take a look at the top 16 teams from Open in Seasons 24 & 25 to see what became of them…

*Team died

As you can see, these teams are clearly deserving of their Main spot. Sure, a few of them died but all in all it is clearly a positive outcome and I think it helps the league by allowing Main to expand and get more teams to help further the development of young talent.

In Summary

  • Adjust the IM promotions to include Open teams that make it past 1st round of playoffs
  • Adjust the IM relegations to relegate teams with 4 wins or less
  • Keep promoting the top 16 in Open to Main
  • This allows new teams to stay together longer and develop which should result in some better teams emerging in the future
  • Allows for the middle tiers to expand yet keep them competitive
