Heroes of the Storm - Stukov's Quotes, Skins and Responses Explained

Stukov's Quotes, Skins and Responses Explained

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 10:27 AM PDT

Hey all,

I've been seeing a good number of threads asking what some of the lines and references for Stukov mean with his release in Heroes. I figured I'd do a rundown of some of his quotes, skins, and general references to the StarCraft universe and other media. Some are fairly obscure, so I hope there's something cool for everyone here.

For those who want a general rundown of his backstory, I made a lore thread for him a while ago here.

For sanity's sake I'll only do things that are actual references I can comment on, and not every quote.

Some spoilers for SC2 follow, just so people are warned.

Poke Quotes

"I am a master of "unconventional" warfare. " – Back in the Brood War Manual, Stukov was described as a tactician who focused his military career on top secret research, and someone who pushed the boundaries of physical theory and conventional technology. This is likely a throwback to that.

"I'd be more nihilistic if I wasn't so fatalistic. " – Likely a reference to nihilism having a large movement in Russia, as well as Stukov's turn to a more fatalistic outlook after he was infested (albeit not to the extent shown in Heroes).

"While Duran was experimenting on me, I used to tell myself it could always get worse. Then, it got worse. " – Samir Duran, also known as Emil Narud, a xel'naga shapeshifter who killed Stukov, then after he was brought back to life experimented on him for four years in his attempts to make protoss/zerg hybrid. These experiments were torture to Stukov.

"Kaneda? Who is that? And why do I want to crush him? " – Kaneda is the main character of the Japanese manga and animated movie Akira. Tetsuo, another character in the manga, had the ability to extend his arm like Stukov does, and used it to try to kill Kaneda until his powers overwhelmed him.

"For my enemy, the day Stukov infested their team was the most horrifying experience of their lives. To me, it was a Tuesday. " – A throwback to the Street Fighter movie, since Stukov looks similar to the antagonist M. Bison (his Dictator skin is also a reference to the character). "For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. For me, it was Tuesday."

Interaction Quotes

Abathur: "The evolution master. Hmph. I am surprised to see you so close to actual combat." – In Heart of the Swarm, which both Stukov and Abathur appeared in fighting alongside Kerrigan, Abathur never actually showed up on the battlefield, opting to instead stay in Kerrigan's capitol ship creature and manipulate the Zerg Swarm from there.

Genji: "A cyborg? You must come from a time before Project Purification. How very interesting." – During the year 2229 on Earth in the StarCraft universe, the one-world government the UPL cracked down on cyborgs, synthetics, dissidents, tech pirates, and those who were genetically impure and began what a purge known as Project Purification. It was from the stock of these prisoners that the experiment that lead to the Koprulu sector terrans happened.

Kerrigan: "The Queen of Blades... This should prove an amusing diversion." – A throwback to the line Stukov had when he joined Kerrigan "if nothing else, it will be interesting." Stukov was given the choice to join Kerrigan after she banished Duran, since Stukov was not actually part of the Swarm, and Stukov joined with her to kill Mengsk mostly out of having nowhere else to go.

Lt Morales: "Lieutenant Morales. I could call you a traitor but... aren't we all?" – Lt. Morales was part of the UED Expeditionary Fleet sent to claim the sector that Stukov and DuGalle commanded. However, the fleet fell apart, and according to the non-canon Co-op Missions in SC2 Morales joined the Terran Dominion they had been sent to conquer. It's unknown whether she did it after the fleet's fall or not, but Stukov references the fact that both of them joined different factions after the fleet's destruction.

Lt Morales: "Come now, lieutenant. Is that any way to speak to your former Vice Admiral? " – Also a callback to the fact Stukov once was one of the commanders in charge of the UED Expeditionary Fleet, and thus Morales's superior officer.

Protoss: "Oh, good, the protoss... I was hoping to get an indulgent lecture today." – A jab at the protoss's tendency for large elaborate speeches and monologues.

Falstad: "At least your corpse wasn't shot into space before they changed their mind." – Falstad is famous for being thought dead by Blizzard until a fan (the "Red Shirt Guy") pointed out he wasn't. Stukov meanwhile was brought back in StarCraft 64, but the game wasn't referenced from then on out. However, every year at BlizzCon people would ask what happened to Stukov, to the point where they started making joked before the lore panels about it. It's thought the fan outcry was the reason they continued that plot in spite of SC64 not being fondly remembered. Stukov meanwhile had his casket shot into space after he tied in a space naval funeral, which is what he mentions here.

Terran: "When the UED returns, I hope they crush you. " – Stukov was part of the first failed expedition to the Koprulu Sector, but Stukov and all terrans know that the UED will one day be back to the sector to try to claim it.

Zagara: "Our paths cross once again, Overqueen Zagara. " – After Kerrigan leaves the Swarm and hands command over to Zagara, she gave herself the rank of Overqueen to show herself as the dominant leader of the Zerg. Zagara's former master skin also references this.

Zarya: "Comrade? For someone from the future, you're quite stuck in the past." (said by Zarya) – "Comrade" is a Russian term of endearment mostly used in the time of the USSR or in the Russian military. Mostly it goes unused in modern Russia, hence Zarya's curiosity.

Zarya response: "We should swap stories sometime. How I miss the green hills of our home." – A throwback both to Stukov being from Russia, and one of his lines in Heart of the Swarm on how he missed Earth's green hills, but that he knew there was no place for him on Earth anymore.

Zerg: "The zerg. It seems not even here I can escape you. " – Stukov has had a long history with the Zerg as seen from him being infested. First he was sent to claim the Zerg's infant Overmind, then he was infested by one of its cerebrates, then cured, then he was experimented on and forced to turn to Kerrigan for help.

Zagara/Zerg: "My allegiance was to Kerrigan. Not to you." – In Heart of the Swarm, Stukov follows Kerrigan by choice for her help in banishing Duran and because he had nowhere else to go. After Kerrigan left, he had no reason to stay with the Swarm.

Kill Quotes

Abathur:* "I never liked that slug. " – In Heart of the Swarm, Abathur mostly stayed in his evolution pit, but feared Stukov as he was the product of a designer far better at interweaving zerg and terran DNA than he was.

Dehaka: "Fifty-seven to fourty-three. My favor. – This is an obscure one, after Legacy of the Void the StarCraft twitter did a poll asking who would win in a fight, Dehaka or Stukov. 57% of people said Stukov would win.

Gul'dan: "What are you to a man who feels no fear? " – As Stukov had already died once, and in a way wants to die again, Gul'dan's power through fear doesn't do much for Stukov (if only that applied in-game).

Kerrigan: *"Consider this my resignation. " – Stukov worked with Kerrigan and her Swarm up until the end of Legacy of the Void.

Lt. Morales: "You are dismissed, lieutenant. " – Another callback to the fact Stukov was Morales's commanding officer in the UED.

Protoss: "I am not impressed, alien." – Stukov had a long history of underestimating the protoss. One of the first battles the UED fleet had was against the protoss on the planet Braxis after they blockaded their forces in the planet. Artanis took a strike force and punched a hole in the blockade large enough for their forces to escape.

Sgt Hammer: "I have never been a fan of siege tanks." – This one's my favorite and also a super obscure one. In the final Brood War level "Omega," Kerrigan fights the protoss, Dominion and UED. The UED's AI is programmed to not focus on building siege tanks, instead focusing on air power and marine/medic. The Dominion meanwhile focuses on nukes, marine/firebat, and factory units like siege tanks. This is to reflect their different combat docterines, and during the mission only the UED can build Valkyries, medics and upgraded Goliaths as all of those are supposed to be UED technology.

Terran: "Backwater peasants, all of you." – The UED generally looked down on the Koprulu sector terrans as backwards and primitive, as they far outstripped them technologically. This is a throwback to Stukov's line vs Terran Dominion General Duke, "You should know we do not represent one of your ragtag peasant militias, but the combined might of the United Earth Directorate."

Zagara: "The infested serve no queen." – While it's never been confirmed, it's strongly hinted Stukov left the Swarm after Zagara took over. He appeared to be absent in the book Evolution, which takes place six years after the main LotV campaign.

Zarya: "Dosvidaniya." – Russian for Goodbye. Both are Russian.

Other Lines

"Insubordinate and churlish." – A reference to the Substitute Teacher Key & Peele sketch.

"I've come to say goodnight." – When Duran killed Stukov for the first time, he said the line "Say goodnight, Stukov." When Stukov got his revenge and killed off Duran in the Void, he returned the favor with the line "I've come to say goodnight you son of a bitch."

"The infested shall rise. " – In SC2, the infested Stukov commands legions of infested terrans, and his theme in Co-op Missions is sending wave after wave of infested terrans against his enemies.

"An angel? Gerard? ...No. He he gone." – Gerard DuGalle was Stukov's lifelong best friend, and the leader of the UED Expedition to the Koprulu sector. Duran manipulated DuGalle until ordering Stukov's death, and after the fleet was destroyed DuGalle expressed regret for killing his friend before killing himself. Stukov still holds fondness for his old friend, and misses him dearly.

"Do you have a good reason for keeping me from my duties?" – A throwback to the opening cinematic of Brood War, where Stukov asks DuGalle the same line.

"Speak freely, captain." – During the UED campaign, the player character is a UED captain that occasionally gets talked at by the cast.

Skins

UED Stukov – During Brood War, UED forces were colored white to differentiate them from the other terran factions, same as this skin.

Dictator Stukov – The red color scheme is a throwback to M. Bison from Street Fighter, who has similar clothing and hatware as Stukov.

Kaldir Stukov – Kaldir is a frozen planet Kerrigan visits during the Heart of the Swarm campaign in order to reclaim one of her broods, only to find protoss colonists on the planet. Generally Kaldir is used as a descriptor of blue skins for zerg.

Zerus Stukov – Zerus was the birthplace of the zerg, where Amon and his follower xel'naga manipulated the native larva-like creatures and bound them to the zerg Overmind. Though the zerg left, some remained on the planet, becoming Primal Zerg.

Ghost Admiral Krakenov – The color scheme of the skin is a reference to the undead pirate LeChuck from the Monkey Island series of adventure games.

Vice Admiral Krakenov – The color of the octopus and the blue suit are likely references to the character Octodad from the Octodad games. (Thanks u/KiloMeda for pointing that out)

The menu thing for Stukov is a remix of the UED Victory Report cinematic's music from StarCraft: Brood War, changed a bit to have more of a zerg metal motif to it.

Also I'd like to point out the description for Stukov is wrong. The last summary put out said "Over time, these expatriate colonists that were once loyal had wavered in their allegiance, threatening the fabric of government which had been sewn across the galaxy. Of the formidable commanders tasked with this imperative endeavor, Vice Admiral Alexei Stukov was second in command." However, the terran colonies were never loyal to the UED, being formed from criminals and thrown across the galaxy against their will, not knowing the UED was even watching them. They even named themselves the Terran Confederacy as a sign of rebelling from their Earth counterparts. Nothing big but I figure I'd throw that out here.

I may make a series out of this and the lore summaries if people want (though I could only realistically get this detailed on StarCraft and maybe a few Warcraft characters). There's a lot to these character's kits and lines that aren't known by a lot of people. But anyway thanks for reading, let me know if there's any questions or things I missed.

Zeratul' Warp Blade I made in 36 hours for a friend's birthday.

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 03:29 AM PDT

So, my friend invited me on Tuesday to celebrate his birthday on Friday. I had no idea what gift I should (or more importantly had time to) buy, but eventually remembered that my father had a neat little workshop where work daily with wood doing little things here and there.

So, I came up with this. (More photos at source)

Looks amazing in a distance, but a bit ragged if inspected closely. I used wood cutters for the first time in my life, so of course it could have been better. I also didn't have enough paint, so underneath of the blade looks not so good. Anyway, I am happy with the result, and hope me friend will be excited later today!

Edit: uploaded a WIP gallery.

Edit: Aww, look at his happy face!

I just love how Blizzard recognizes and embraces our memes

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 03:30 PM PDT

For whoever doesn't remember, the first leak we got from 2.0 was a spanish site, that we got translated and Loot Boxes were Booty Coffers in the translation.

So we argued for a while about it and... well, those are forever Booty Coffers for some of us.

Now, Blizz could have not made it into a spray... or they could.

FYI Stukov's level 20 Flailing Swipe upgrade reduces it's CD to 40 seconds from 80 for each charge, despite not saying so in the description.

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 07:19 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of comments since Stukov came out saying the level 20 upgrade would be better if it reduced the cooldown, however it actually does, it just doesn't say so in the description.

It's still pretty bad in my opinion, takes longer to get all 3 charges than it take to get the Base ult. Personally I think the charges should be refunded together like Genji's Q, and then not have a cooldown between uses. However there seems to be a lot of people thinking it takes 240 seconds for the full 3 charges, when it's actually only 120.

edit: It should probably also mention the 4 second cooldown between swipes.

Suggestion for players with not many heroes, stop re-rolling boxes and buy heroes!

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 09:09 AM PDT

This is completely up to you, but I have a few friends that are relatively new to the game and they never have any gold because they re-roll every box, and then say its too hard to get more heroes lol. Skins are cool but whats the point in having all these cool skins for heroes you don't own! That being said I feel like this is how blizzard is making money off of 2.0, people dont have any gold because of re-rolls so when a new hero comes out, they are forced to buy gems if they want to play them.

Blizzard, please make auto-select HoTS 2.0 compatible

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 07:53 AM PDT

Auto-select is such a fun way to play Quick Play or vs AI, but since HoTS 2.0 I hate using it. Why would I want to be stuck with random cosmetics when I now have so many cool skins and coordinated loadouts?

I think it would be a much better idea idea for auto-select to use instead use a random loadout. This preserves the random theme while giving players control of the possibilities.

I never knew how helpful and friendly the hots community was

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 08:02 AM PDT

You guys are seriously the friendliest moba community I've seen in a while! Every game there are just so many people trying to help each other! After every death there is at least 2 guys pinging another guy to help them. I seriously have never seen such kindness before! Constantly encouraging people to help them. Shame some of them are silenced though, never figured out why, they seem to be such nice helpful persons!

Stealth Uther Level 20 Talent Tooltip Change

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 04:36 PM PDT

Uther's level 20 talent Divine Protection got a stealth change. Previously, it read "Devotion now stacks twice, and its duration is refreshed when applied". Now it reads "Applying Devotion to a hero that is already affected by Devotion increases their Armor by an additional 25"

http://imgur.com/a/h0Jz6

Going through the UtherData.xml file there appears to not be any real behavior change. The difference is that if a target is Stunned Rooted or Silenced and has a -armor effect, and Uther has Guardian of Ancient Kings, the target will only go up to (75-armor reduction) armor rather than 75 armor. This is relevant when considering combined CC+-armor effects like Tyrande's Stun+Hunter's Mark, Dehaka's Drag+Primal Swarm, or Arthas' Shattered Armor talent.

Afterlife

This could be a programming nightmare but...

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 08:05 AM PDT

I think it would be cool if Probius' Null Gate blocked or slowed enemy skill shot projectiles targeted to pass through it.

This would give it a true "Nullification" ability as well as making this ult more viable.

Do you think the community would be willing to support?

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 06:37 PM PDT

A HOTS 24 hr stream fundraiser for a school program?!

I'm a 29 year old teacher from Canada. I run an extra-curricular drama program providing over 100 students annually in grades 6-9 a chance to be a part of a large scale theatrical production.

Shows to date have been:

2017: Lion King

2016: Seussical

2015: Beaty & the Beast

The catch is not only do I have to spend hundreds of hours directing and working with the students, but it's up to me to fundraise the revenue as well. IT might be a chance to get the community to come together for a good cause. It's basically up to me to bring in an extra $10,000.00. I don't expect to get it all in one stream, but a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand would make a huge dent.

Skill wise I'm average. Plat 3 HL, Diamond 3 in TL.

Any thoughts or feedback would be cool.

Animations visible through fog

Posted: 14 Jul 2017 03:59 AM PDT

Are the developers aware that some spells and abilities show through fog?

For example you can see if the enemies are doing a boss by seeing certain animations even though you have no vision over the area.

It was the same in Warcraft 3.
