Learn Dota 2 - Understanding power spikes

Understanding power spikes

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 10:01 AM PDT

Understanding how to properly play around a hero's power spikes is a fundamental skill in Dota. In a nutshell, a power spike is when you obtain an important milestone for a hero (e.g. levels or items) that gives you a sharp increase in power. This is a component of a hero's overall power curve, which is their general strength throughout the game. I think that most people have a broad understanding of this concept - we all know that spectre is weak early and strong late game, for example - but people often fail to capitalize on the narrow timing windows in which they can make an outsized impact.

One thing that I want to stress throughout this guide is that your power is 100% relative to the power of the other heroes in the game. A lvl 10 Slark with Shadow Blade at 14 minutes is exactly as strong as a lvl 10 Slark with SB at 20 minutes; the difference is how strong everyone else is at those times. The Slark who hit their timings early will be able to tear through squishies like tissue paper, whereas the Slark who hit their timings late will be significantly less scary. Everyone is constantly growing stronger over time; if you just bought an important item, the opposing carry might be 30 seconds away from buying theirs. That is why power spikes are so dependent on timing: if you fail to capitalize on the window in which you are strongest, you are giving your opponents the opportunity to catch up. Ideally, you want to be in position to immediately take advantage of hitting a power spike in order to maximize the discrepancy between your strength and your opponents.

Here are a few practical examples to show this in action:

  • Scenario 1: I'm playing Lina mid vs Storm Spirit. Lina is generally a stronger laner than SS pre-6, so let's assume that I am able to harass SS out of lane a few times and get an advantage in XP. I know that I'm going to hit 6 first, and Laguna Blade will give me kill potential on SS. I might only get a 30 second window in which I'm 6 and SS is 5, so I want to take full advantage of it. I should try to pull the lane towards my side of river to get SS in a more vulnerable position. I should try to harass SS to get him low on health. I should make sure that I'm in a good position and won't get body-blocked by creeps. Ideally, I should also prepare ahead and make sure I have a ward up so I don't end up walking into a gank. The instant I hit 6 I need to look for an opportunity to go all-in on SS, because my window is rapidly closing until he hits 6 as well and we're on more even terms.

  • Scenario 2: I'm playing Drow Ranger and I hit level 6. My ability to tear down towers is almost unrivaled at this point in the game. My ability to flash-farm is mediocre at best, however. I could AFK farm in lane, but there are plenty of heroes who are better at that than Drow. I'd get stronger, sure, but the enemy SF will be getting stronger faster than me because he has superior farming skills. To truly utilize my power spike, I want to start destroying the enemy's towers ASAP. I need to farm as well, of course, but I should try to take advantage of this window where my pushing power is relatively higher than everyone else's. Pro Drow games tend to be very fast, because they play to her strengths: ending games early.

  • Scenario 3: There is a Night Stalker on the other team, we just hit the first night, and he's missing from lane. Where do you think he went? He's trying to gank someone, dillweed. His name is Night Stalker. You know that's what he wants, so play accordingly: don't overextend, put down wards, and be safe. There is nothing sadder than seeing a NS go a whole night without getting a kill. He goes from being a terrifying predator to a door-to-door sales guy desperately trying to get you to buy his overpriced Cutco knives. Understand your opponent's power spikes, and avoid letting them snowball off their windows of relative strength.

  • Scenario 4: I'm playing Lina vs SS again, but this time I'm 0-3-0. The first fight was close - SS got away with just a sliver of health. A strong breeze could have finished him off. The second time he survived with 20% of his HP. The third time he dove me under my tower, blew me up, and then zipped away laughing at 50%. What the hell happened? Every time that he killed me, the discrepancy between our power levels grew. What should I do? Just like in Alcoholics Anonymous, the first step is that I need to admit that I have a problem. My first death might not have been my fault - it could have gone either way. But every subsequent death can be attributed to not respecting his increasing power relative to mine. In my experience, this is the single biggest cause of feeding in lane. I need to acknowledge that I simply can't 1v1 him right now. I might not even be able to farm in lane if he's present. I need to get farm or kills elsewhere until I've narrowed the gap.

This has turned into a Purge-length wall of text, so I'll try to wrap things up. Knowing when you are strong, what you are strong at, and how to utilize that power properly is a necessary part of playing a hero optimally. Pros aren't just good at the mechanics of their heroes - they know the exact timing of these power spikes, can hit these timings consistently, and know how to push these advantages to the fullest.

TL;DR 1) Understand your power spikes. 2) Take advantage of windows of relative strength. Don't waste them. 3) Respect the power spikes of your opponents. 4) Be aggressive when you are relatively strong, and be defensive when you are relatively weak.

Mask Of Madness on Spectre

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 06:56 AM PDT

I tried MoM on Spectre and had a pretty good experience with it.

I went Phase MoM/ MoM Phase into Radience and the MoM helps me sustaining while farming jungle and speeding up my farming in general.

It also felt like i was online and ready to kill people with just Phase and MoM, able to outrun people who tried to gank me.

Was i just lucky the two Games i tried it? What do you guys think?

I think it is a viable alternative to the Vanguard into Radience build which i think feels pretty weak pre Radience.

How do you maintain map control after winning lane?

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:13 AM PDT

So, I've been climbing up in MMR (I'm about 2.6k atm), and lately games have just felt... claustrophobic.

I've hit 3k before through hero spamming, but I'm trying to be more versatile, but it just seems lately that by the time the 20 minute mark hits, the other team is either 5 manning or split pushing us to death.

Any fight our team takes, we win, but the enemy team plays in a way that is just constantly pushing every lane, to the point that even when a teamwipe happens it's hard to even take a tower.

Can I get some general tips on how to fix this, both as a support and as a carry? I'm looking for vague tips because I'm still trying to figure out what role I want to play (better than my team is at carry, but no one ever wants to support, and I always feed when playing mid).

General tips are welcome as well from higher MMR players. All my favorite heroes are bad in pubs, and all the heroes I win on are mind numbingly boring, so I've still been searching for that perfect hero and just can't find one =(

Just finished Act 1 with random strangers.

I must say that it is not as hard as people claim it to be. It is actually pretty easy once you know the mechanics.

Farming with Ursa

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:42 PM PDT

I've been playing Ursa recently and in building meta items like Vlads, Abyssal, BKB and Aghs, I find that farming with Ursa is incredibly slow. My gpm with him is around 500 while other carries are around 600+. Is this just how the hero functions or can I be more efficient with my farming?

Skill Build for Sniper Mid

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 05:39 AM PDT

I've recently found that I really enjoy playing sniper mid. What I'll typically do is go a 3-1-1 and rush desolator (after grabbing aquillas and phase boots). I find that this gives me a little bit of an edge in lane because I still get head shot damage plus the extra range, but I also feel like at lvl 6 having the extra shrapnel damage gives me a lot of kill potential. Additionally I'll try to take stack the large camp and than just use shrapnel charges to kill it, accelerating my farm. From there I'll do pretty standard sniper things and go something like maelstrom, hurricane pike, and mkb or shadow blade. Does anybody else who play sniper have any suggestions or what have people who played against this build mid thing about it?

Broodmother build

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 05:25 AM PDT

I've seen radiances on Dotabuff's guide section for brood and gave it a shot, it went pretty well. Some people pick it up with a midas first and others don't. What do you think about midas -> radiance? When would you take a radiance build over an orchid build and what would items would you go anyway? I ended up building soul ring - midas - radiance - phase - bkb - diffusal - travels - AC - Skadi. Also, where would you fit a dispel item like manta, lotus orb or euls into these builds if the enemy are spamming dust like madmen?

I went OD Midlane per usual. The only difference was that my team was godawful. Everyone overextended or dived towers. The only times I died early game were when a PA ganked me twice, and I had a damage issue vs pudge (he never hooked me the whole game idt. I just dodged them). Besides an awful-skilled team, my teammates were flamers up to the point of me muting them. They had a thick peruvian accent which made it hard to understand them, but our PL especially was rude and obnoxious. He went safelane with our amazing silencer and when he died, all I saw was "Report Silencer. He's trash no last hits. He can't last hit. report him. I can't play this stupid game you **********s I'm jungling." I tried to tell him to not give up and to come mid and get kills with me but he was constantly rude. I died once again mid and he was all over me this time saying how bad I was, even though I didn't really let pudge get a lot of cs early game. I had a horrible mid/late game because of me dying. I had 3 deaths with horrible positioning and the rest were just me expecting my team to do stuff when they didn't (i.e. silencer using ult during a teamfight. Spacecow ulting. Etc). Then the most halarious part was me buying a lot of wards as a mid core. I was pretty pissed at that, as PL and weaver should have supported. In any case what can I do in these games? Should I just give up? I almost got a rampage... But our weaver stole the kills (as an aside).

Stuff I need to improve on:

  • Understanding my damage output against pudge. I dodged hooks, but when he came in and rotted, I would panic and astrial prison him instead of knocking his mana down, running then prisoning. I took needless damage that way.

  • Figuring out my item build. I knew I wanted MKB or Silveredge because of axe/pa, I just was slow on farm

  • Farm instead of help. The team dove into at least 4 teamfights I knew we weren't going to win. I just needed to run and farm up items.

  • Figure out how to encourage our PL more.

Besides those, what could I have done?! I'm really discouraged at how this match went. Besides the TB, the enemy was lower skill than me and barely knew what they were doing. WD had full vision of the map and no one cared to ward (I just avoided the areas I knew they had vision in). The whole team was foreign with a thick annoying acccent and always flaming, up to the point of me muting most of them.

What are the most crucial things to remember when you're a support?

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 10:56 PM PDT

I play on a SEA server. I support toxic players 24/7 and it seems like I'm doing it wrong. Do you guys have any tips for beginner supports like warding, creep stacking, etc.?????

Change HP bar threshold by keybind?

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 09:14 AM PDT

Is it still possible? I remember it used to be possible to change the HP bar threshold by pressing some keys. It was really helpful especially when playing Axe.

Is it ok on some specific heroes to have a lot of deaths?

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:37 PM PDT

Recently when people take mid and insta lock (mid is my best position in terms of hero pool and ability to cs), I've been liking going for pos 4 roam heroes like sb, pudge, riki, mirana. All of these heroes I feel like I actually make space on the map for my team and gank mid lane frequently as well as any other lane that needs help.

However, on sb and pudge in particular, I seem to sometimes "feed" a lot, in the sense that the enemy has an easy time picking me off due to the nature of the heroes. Is it really bad to see a sb with 17 deaths in an hour long game, for example, when his main job in that paticular game is to charge sniper and disrupt the enemy, which usually results in me getting focused? Thanks.

Recently I've had some ranked games where it's really hard to take seriously, and everyone dies a lot. Anyone else in the same boat?

Posted: 12 Jun 2017 02:43 AM PDT

I will use my most recent game as an example. https://www.dotabuff.com/matches/3243353091

I was Luna safelane, I died to first blood due to pathing errors (or im just a fucking noob idk) and that was the start of the end. I died 13 total times, which was an astronomical amount, but here's the thing; the lowest deaths was still a pretty high number of 8. It didn't seem like anyone wanted to really win, everyone was just... playing. The game reminded me of my days in 1k mmr when it was just constant fighting no farming. (match average was 3100.)

I'm not sure what this post is, I guess I want help on how to take the game seriously when it seems everyone else has gone full retard, or how to consistently not die as much, while at the same time getting a sufficient amount of farm.

Roaming Support Gyrocopter? Can this work in 7.xx?

Posted: 11 Jun 2017 09:49 PM PDT

He's been getting quite a few buffs lately, and I'm actually wondering if those can't be applied towards a support build. Max out W first, then Q, then E - then buy stuff like force staff, drums, Eul's. Not sure what boots, though I'm thinking possibly Tranqs.

Any other ideas on how this could work?
